After spending a few days locally to highlight any issues with the boat we now begin the long sail of around 1300 NM to the beautiful Island of Croatia. With the wind behind us we sail south to Fethiye where we will do all the checkout formalities before heading over to Rhodes in Greece. Along the way we meet up with more friends and are turned round by the Turkish Navy before finally reaching our destination in the bay of Fethiye. In a lightening storm on our sailboat, deciding if we should leave or stay. Austin changes the fuel filter on our Yanmar diesel engine to find it was extremely dirty. Saltwater and diesel filters with sediment reservoirs. Cooking while at sea on a swinging oven. Gimballed gas two-burner hob and oven with protective stainless steel safety rail. Dragging anchor in 65 knots of wind while Bayly is alone on the boat. Our marine toilet leaks and floods to the bilge. Austin repairs the toilet and adds a new seal.

Sao Jorge sticks out like a dragon’s back or an enourmous stone ship eternally anchored in the blue expanses of the Atlantic being one of the youngest volcanic islands of the Azores with its estimated 550 000 years of age. Lying within the sight of Pico and Faial, we enjoy amazing sights with crystal clear sunny skies, Thula being safely tied up in the small marina of Velas. Our stops lead us to paths that lead along Sao Jorge’s adventurous cliffs with their many waterfalls down to the Fajãs, the flat coastal plains. The island of cheese is so surprisingly beautiful - a little hidden gem being inhabited by 30 - 35.000 cows but only around 10.000 inhabitants. The flora of the highland pastures ensures that the 'produced' milk is among the best in the world - the island cheese a delicacy! Last but not least hop on board Maja, a Najad 49. What a different sailing experience adding 16 foot and a few tons extra to cross the choppy sea back to Faial.

The Pioneer Leg/Sailing Leg 1 of the great Asia Expedition 2022/2023 went from Gothenburg to Helsingborg in southern Sweden. We left Gothenburg 8 June 2022, and after six days of sailing we arrived in Helsingborg 14 June 2022. The visit in beautiful Helsingborg was four days of sunny weather. Thousands of visitors came on board to visit the ship, a welcome ceremony was held with the Port of Helsingborg and City of Helsingborg, and we hosted both business dinners and lunches on board. We also welcomed the group of new deckhands who signed on to sail with us to Helsinki. Follow the sailing leg from start to finish in this video. Thank you Helsingborg for a fantastic four days! Just a note: Our cannons may be replicas of the original cannons, but they are just for show and only shoot flour and pieces of newspaper. We leave Alcaro Bay and make our way to Cape Hotham. We check out the nearby creek. Then it’s the technical sail through the Vernon Islands and on to Darwin. As soon as we arrive in Darwin we get on a flight to Brisbane and then on to the Whitsundays to pick up the Volvo Penta engine for Nutshell. Then it’s a mere 4000km drive back to Darwin with the boat trailer and engine in tow! We then take Peanut of the water because we won’t need her for a while. Thanks for watching. Eventually we'll have 5 of them going in (all from Vetus), but to get the ball rolling, we're just getting the mold made. Matt does a practice round of making a fiberglass plug, and it turned out so nicely that we were able to use it for the forward hatch over our master shower. Cutting a big hole into our deck, we crossed our fingers and hoping it was all done properly. After leaving Blue Water Marina, we sail north, around North Rock, and set an easterly course for the shoal. The day quickly turns into one of our most blissful and relaxing sails to date. We are escorted to our anchoring spot by a dolphin and use the last hour of daylight to jump in the water for a swim, ending the evening with a stunning sunset over the water. Morale is high as we complete our Panama Canal transit and enter the Pacific Ocean for the very first time! What a feeling as that last lock gate opens and we shoot out into the Pacific Ocean! What a contrast when compared to how we feel a few days later when we make one of the dumbest mistakes of our sailing career, nearly blowing up $6k of brand new Battleborn batteries. We debated whether or not to include this mistake but decided it'd be best to show it in the hopes that others can learn from our mistake and to showcase the $40 part that saved us! After a successful transit we tie up at Playita Marina in Panama City and celebrate our successful transit with our friends on Delos and both our crews! After a night of celebrating its time to say goodbye to the crew and get down to some TLC for Calico Skies. While in the San Blas our watermaker showed signs of needing new membranes. We had replacement membranes shipped to Panama City and we uninstall the watermaker to replace them. As usual access to the watermaker includes some boat yoga. We are super stoked when the next package arrives, a huge upgrade to our power system....six new 100 amp Battleborn Batteries, a DC to DC Charger, and a soft start for our air-conditioner. We get right down to installing the batteries as we are behind schedule as usual.
