A couple of weeks ago we found our forestay to be damaged. As we plan on a big season of cruising we definitely wanted it to be replaced. As this came as a surprise it had to go on the back burner as we already had an overdue appointment with the hard stand. We booked in a date but upon splashing back in, one of the two transducers we just had installed was leaking saltwater which meant we were back in the slip and our forestay fix was delayed another day. By the time we had our leaky boat sorted the riggers were unfortunately no longer available. This had us fruitlessly calling every possible rigger on the Northern East Coast of Australia. This got us thinking we weren't going to be doing what we wanted to be doing this sailing season. We continue up Namibia's "Skeleton Coast" and visit another remote anchorage at Mercury Island. Mercury Island is one of the largest breeding grounds for seabirds in all of Namibia and is said to be home to approximately 16,000 African Penguins. After a month in the desert and being anchored next to "Bird Island" its no surprise that Skylark was covered in....sand and bird S***!!! After Mercury Island we continue north on our final overnight passage in Africa to Walvis Bay, Namibia and Jen gets creative in the galley with our abundance of Namibian Cray Fish. Unfortunately it's time for our friend and crew member, Micalene to fly home to Cape Town. She sailed with us for 1 month and over 700 nautical miles and brought so much laughter on board! We still miss her company today! Walvis Bay will be our last port of call in Africa and in our next episode we officially start our crossing of the south Atlantic ocean! After six months preparing my sailing yacht Vayu for our departure to the Eastern Mediterranean, I planned a shakedown cruise over the weekend with my girlfriend. The forecast was for perfect weather and the two of us where excited by the fun weekend we were going to share. And in the process I would make sure all was in working order for our departure for Sicily in the coming week. We set out from the port of Pollenca in the northern part of the Island of Mallorca and headed south along the North coast toward Palma de Mallorca which is on the opposite Southern tip of the Island. A comfortable two day sail with an overnighter in one of the many bays available. About one hour after departure she started to feel sea sick. And we continued in the hope that she would get better. In fact she got worse. And so bad that I had to find a place to get her off the boat so she could be on land and recover. I chose Cala San Vicente, a two beach cove. By then the weather had deteriorated against all forecasts. Fortunately there were some life guards on the beach who helped us get ashore in the dingy without a catastrophy. They subsequently tended to Isabel and eventually called an ambulance. She was taken to the hospital where she recovered quickly and was then sent home. In the meantime I headed out to finish my shakedown cruise. With the wind strength growing the spinnaker got loose and wound itself around the forestay. I could not leave it like that and go anywhere so I had to get it down somehow. Two hours later after an escrusiatingly difficult wrestling of the spinnaker to the sail locker I was on my way. I stopped for the night in the port of Soller to rest and recover. Had a restful but short nite and was on my way the following day. I had a nice motor sail and the opportunity to test out most of my gear on the way therefore fulfilling my goal of making this a shakedown cruise. We arrived at Minerva Reef late in the day and despite the overcast conditions, the colours of the reef still looked fantastic. The lagoon entrance is at least 120m wide and well charted, so its a great overnight stop on the passage north or south between New Zealand and Fiji.
