Last week, I glued up the square section blank for the 11.2 metre long main mast. This week, it's time to transform that square section into a steadily tapered mast, tapering from the partners to the top and also having a reverse taper from the partners down to the mast foot. I talk about how I've gone about doing exactly that, and show some developments inside the boat. This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build. A railroad bridge is stuck down, so we have to anchor early in the afternoon in Portsmouth, VA. Fog the next morning delays our start, but we eventually make our way to the start of the Great Dismal Swamp, where we encounter our first-ever lock and finish our day crossing the North Carolina state line. We bounce around in this episode. We find ourselves in the BVI, using some lost footage that probably should have been in the episodes before James from Zingaro came to visit. That said, on passage from Cooper Island, BVI to Dutch Sint Maarten we suffer a rigging failure that forces us to motor the rest of the way. This may not seem the biggest rig failure there could be, but make no mistake, any failure of stays or shrouds on a sailboat must be taken absolutely seriously. Once in SXM, we get the necessary repairs done just in time for our friends Mike and Amy to arrive. Our life on a sailboat. Fix, fix, fix, haha. We corrected the fact that our water pump was cycling too much. Spruced up the teak toe rail. During a hot and humid day our A/C kept throwing an error. Since buying our Leopard 45 in June of 2021 we've had ongoing issues with the mast, the most serious of which started with the sounds of the conduit slapping and breaking inside the mast as the yacht sailed across the Atlantic Ocean.
