Lenny has a suspicious growth on his leg removed. We rent a car for the day and go on a road trip, watch some people bungie jump off a bridge. We visit the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation in Zadar Croatia. THE SEA ORGAN A sound art object and experimental musical instrument that creates lovely chimed tunes using only the rolling power of sea waves. The installation looks like a series of broad steps leading down into the sea hiding clever engineering beneath their surface. Nikola Bašić, a renowned architect, has devised an ingenious system of resonant chambers that produces syncopated ever-changing tunes which soothe and excite the minds of countless amazed visitors as they chill and linger on the Riva for hours just to hear that dreamlike sound once again before they leave. GREETING TO THE SUN Another installation of the brilliant architect symbolizing the communication between man and nature. This stirring monument consists of 300 multi-layered glass plates that absorb solar energy during the day and create a spectacular waterfront light show just after sunset. These installations are a holiday for all your senses.

In this captivating episode, we embark on a remarkable sailing adventure through the enchanting Crinan Canal—a scenic shortcut between the Clyde and the Sound of Jura. Join us as we immerse ourselves in the wonders of 18th and 19th-century technology, experiencing the awe-inspiring journey that lifts Polaris (and our crew) 20 meters above sea level and back to the embrace of salty water. The Crinan Canal, a true marvel of engineering, takes us on a voyage through time. With 15 locks and 7 bridges, we navigate this picturesque waterway, marveling at the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the past. As each lock opens and closes, Polaris gracefully ascends and descends, transcending the boundaries between land and sea. Throughout our journey, we encounter breathtaking scenery, from lush green landscapes to charming villages that dot the canal's banks. Join us in discovering the hidden gems and tranquility that the Crinan Canal has to offer. Witness the seamless blend of natural beauty and man-made wonders as we sail under arching bridges and through locks that have stood the test of time. Let the spirit of the Crinan Canal transport you to a bygone era, where the fusion of nature and human ingenuity creates a truly unforgettable sailing experience. We are Kathrin and Daniel sailing, cruising and living aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies and after our three boys left the nest we made the big decision to leave the rat race in London and to make our beloved sailboat our primary floating residence. Over the years we added a generator, got rid of the propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric stove and oven, changed our house battery bank to Lithium (LiFePo, Lithium Iron Phospate), added a 1,200W solar arch and a water maker. With these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable home allowing us to cruise the coast of the United Kingdom and, most recently, Scoland, in comfort, summer and winter. Kathrin loves to cook and bake on board, you will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes, and makes good use of her Thermomix cooker. We totally fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rental house in London and sold and gave away all our furniture and belongings that had no space on Polaris. It is a very liberating feeling to be able to say that all we own is with us on our small sailing boat. There's nothing else to care about. We enjoy our freedom and exploring new places, discovering their history and we love making new friends along our way.

Well this is it, the rest of our epic journey to Aqueduct Marina. The chaos continues as we race down the llangollen, break down, get repaired, mum falls in, we face the deservedly notorious Hurleston Locks, take the Barbridge Junction like an pro, then have a fairly relaxing last few miles before proudly cruising into Aqueduct Marina and into a mooring like we've been doing it all our lives (not going to lie, I was smug as anything after mooring up!). It was both exciting and terrifying, and I'm so immensely proud of what we've done and overcome. I hope you've enjoyed watching our travels. Hopefully as time goes on I'll be able to record more while on the move! Thanks to everyone who helped, offered advice, let us go first through locks, and generally waved and cheered us on our way. Thanks also to all the CRT staff (although not those who parked their vehicle so close to a lift bridge) you were fab and patient with us, and the amazing Paul from Canal and River Rescue - you really couldn't have been more lovely and calm, allaying our fears and taking time to explain everything and giving me maintence tips!
Watch in this episode how we continue with the teak deck repairs as well as hull repairs. We also share with you custom design of our electrical switch panel for nav station but also the new engine panel design. Check out how the re-chroming turned out. I think it's the best thing since sliced bread!! :D I stared at them for hours...
What do you do on a beautiful day with little to no wind and you want to go sailing? The remedy is to go Sunfish sailing as they don’t take much wind to start moving. We sail SV KATCHUPA and nearly turtle on the way back to shore when a surprise gust catches me off guard. The GoPro goes for a swim as I make a quick recovery. Lessons learned each time I head out on this sunfish. Feel free to comment on suggestions and look for clues of things not up to par… I left some on the deck for you. I’m sailing a 1977 Sunfish with an Orca sail. Next trip out I’ll have the new Sunfish sail up with a viewing window.

I recently spent 9 days cruising around the Adriatic and the Eastern Mediterranean on the Norwegian Gem. I picked the cruise as it offered 9 ports in 9 days and in this video I'll briefly review each port. We visited some famous places and visiting by cruise is a great way of seeing a lot of places in a short time. I'll also talk a little about the logistics of visiting each place on a cruise. I found it quite hard to find info about each place before I visited, so hopefully this will be helpful to future travellers. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane. However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on. Shallow draft or standard keel (deep draft) is some of my most frequently asked questions last month so I decided to share my point of view. I'm not a naval architect or engineer only a sailor, but share my experience from 4 decades of sailing. It will always be pros & cons with solutions and designs and sometimes compromises. Which compromises are acceptable depends on the different sailors' approaches to sailing, so it always surprises me when some present really strong opinions as the only truth or way to go. I try to share a balanced view even though it will still be from my point of view based on the experiences I have coloring my opinions. But some factors are easy to approach via facts and not emotions. I would say performance is one of the very few angles you can be very strict in the opinion as it's physically easier to prove by evidence. If some designs are better than others on the other hand depends on what's important. Elegant lines to some looks outdated to others just as an example. I have not talked too much about long keel as this is almost impossible to buy new today as most production yachts nowadays have moved away from this. Mass production Yachts or production yachts on a smaller scale is where the volume is, so this is also more interesting to discuss when it comes to pros & cons in solutions. I promised to share more about my boat but could not find time to do it properly for this episode so decided to put it in the next episode. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING AND SUBSCRIBING! You can also follow sailing with Thomas on other platforms for almost daily updated pics and videos, and even find yourself a new T-Shirt: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingwiththomas Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingwiththomas Shop: https://sailingwiththomascom.wpcomstaging.com/shop/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Sailingwiththomas ABOUT THIS CHANNEL: I`m sailing around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now. Even though this is season 4 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor for decades. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway. PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS! I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore. I enjoy sharing my mistakes as well my knowledge and experience without trying to teach you anything.

This is one of the more difficult pieces of engineering the team have had to work on, and now they can move on to the targa arch, coming up next week. Thanks for watching! We travel back from Wallingford to Reading taking in the stunning Oxfordshire countryside. On our way we had the pleasure, maybe not...of meeting a madman on the River. He starts off hitting and scratching our boat and then tell us to basically F%21?*off, the most rude person in the world. The guy is mad with life and people means nothing to him. Needless to say that Simon has a bit of a rant about the whole thing! Down the line we commented with the lock master which encouraged us to make a formal complaint as they have a Zero tolerance for this kind of things and the person apparently is well known. But we have decided not to spoil our travels with this person and just keep going. Follow our blog with our daily adventures on Facebook . We post our route everyday, showing you the ups and downs of sailing. An amazing adventure documented every single day. We are really enjoying this life and sharing everything with you it's been wonderful . Thank you very much, you guys are amazing supporting us with your likes and comments, we really feel that we have a new family out there. Much love Carla & Simon A little bit about us... We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.
We fly to Texas to find our perfect home on the water and we quickly realize that buying a boat is an EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER! As we close one chapter of our life and begin another, emotions set in, and market realities make the process seem impossible. Rope ends will eventually fray even if they were cut with a hot knife or if you burnt the end of the rope. The best way to ensure the tails of your rope stay neat and tidy is to whip the ends. The simple technique only takes a couple of minutes ensure that your rope will not fray even when your rope is used often. Like Splicing whipping rope is a core sailing skill which is easy to learn and great to know to help you maintain your boat. See the link below off the simple method. https://youtu.be/72OO5m7Si_w If you want to take your finish to the next level then take the time too added a loop to the end of the rope. In addition to stopping the end of the rope from fraying it gives your halyards the added benefit of having a built in mousing loop that allows you to easier replacing or remove your halyards for the winter with a mousing line. Make sure you stay around to the end of the video to see how this works The team at bottom up boat hope you liked this whipping demonstration if you want to give it a go yourself pick up the tools of the trade from the links below.

______ In this episode, we cast off and sail from Rivière-du-Loup to the Magdalen Islands (Quebec, Canada) with our friends Jérémi and Laurence (teammates on the transatlantic crossing). This is the beginning of the breakdown of electronic devices on Le Voilier Destination, with our depth gauge no longer giving the depth and our watermaker which has several water leaks! We train in sporting conditions to prepare for the Atlantic. We visit the island of Havre-Aubert, we go to meet the friendly Madelinots and we stuff ourselves in the lobster bought directly from the fisherman!
