This week on Sailing Bye Felicia, Matt and Lisa sail from Great Sale Cay, to Fox town, as they slowly make their way across the north Bahamas to The Abacos islands. Great sale cay proved to be a sturdy Anchorage, and the crew had amazing conditions as they spent all day sailing. Once anchored, Matt and Lisa work together to hoist the dinghy back into the water, using the boats rigging and the spinnaker halyard. Then, they reassembled the Yamaha 9.9 outboard engine to the dinghy, using the dinghy davits as a makeshift crane. Then, the crew dinghy in to Fox town, for provisions, and propane fuel. Only to find that the propane services on the island were unavailable for a few more days. So, the crew settled for an amazing seafood lunch and a couple of local beers. The following day Matt and Lisa feel inspired to catch their own seafood dinner. And what’s on the menu? The poisonous lionfish. Although very beautiful, the lion fish is highly invasive. And it’s not meant to be in this part of the world. How lionfish were introduced, is heavily debated. One theory, is the lionfish escaped from an aquarium that was damaged during a hurricane in the early 90s. Another theory is they were intentionally released. Regardless of how the lionfish arrived here, their populations are out of control, they have no natural predators, they eat large amounts of reef fish, it’s legal and encouraged to remove as many as possible from the environment. Removing spines from a lionfish is very dangerous, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Captain Matt is a professional scuba diving instructor, and has been working around lionfish for 15 years. Once spines are removed from the lionfish, it’s treated just like any other fish, and simply filleted deep-fried and enjoyed. #episode37 #sailingbyefelicia #lionfish
Squat down and hold your breath! I don’t know if we have mentioned it before but Honu is a big girl for the ICW. We hit the max in both directions. Our mast is 63.5Ft and our keel is 6.5Ft. The majority of the fixed bridge heights are 65ft at high tide, the depth of the channel is 8-10ft at low tide, and the currents were the icing on the cake. So timing was everything on this trip. We knew this going into it. However, we had no idea how much stress it was going to be going under every single bridge and it never decreases regardless how many bridges you go under or their height. But this was our only choice. We are new to this boat and not prepared mentally or practically to go out into the ocean for an overnight passage. We know our limits. We know when we can stretch them and when we need to take a step back to do a bit more building before can we grow. These are all the things we are learning while living on our sailboat. Besides all the bridge stress the ICW has provided us with some beautiful memories so far. It is so super neat to see the prospective form the water way looking in instead of looking out. 🎶Music🎶 Yarin Primak - I Want You To Stay Sémø - Fractured Timeline Want Real-Time Updates?! The snorkeling on the way to the mouth of the river was very nice. QP saw lots of sea fans, coral and reef fish. The water was too low to get our dinghy into the river, so we walked in until we sank past our knees in sticky mud. On the way out, QP got some fishing lessons from the Great Egret. Wonder how real life on our 46ft sailboat feels like? Here is how we live Off-Grid on the Ocean and travel - An insight into our daily life aboard our sailboat. This week we are in Malta and after check in and a quick visit by the maritime police we take our tiny home for a sail. But before that we almost collide with another boat at anchor. this scary moment we lift anchor and go out for a coastal sail with our new crew. Our sailing excursion turns into a sail into the sunset and we drop anchor on the north side of the island. Just as we settle into the calm anchorage, it becomes apparent that we had to learn more about provisioning as we only realize we had no oils to cook, when we were anchored in an area without any places to buy any provisions around. Luckily Malta has a massive sailing community and in almost every protected bay you will find charter boats, tour boats and cruisers that will help a fellow sailor in distress 😉 After a quick dinghy ride, dinner on the boat was saved and we were ready for an early nights sleep at anchor. We very next day we swapped sailing life for land life for a day and got spoiled for an epic BBQ by one of our patreons. But when you life full-time on a boat there is never much time to rest and just after our visit to land we had to tackle another boat project. Our anchor chain had become rusty during the time we were in the marina in Tunisia. It had become so bad, the anchor chain almost did not roll through the windlass anymore. It frequently got stuck in the anchor roller. Initially we planned to galvanize the chain but this would leave us no choice but to visit a marina for a few days or to use our stern anchor as emergency anchor. However, we did not feel comfortable with only a small fortress anchor and no main anchor. Luckily we found someone in Malta who sold us 80 Meters of anchor chain and while we swapped the heavy load off on our bow, we secured our boat to a mooring ball. The endeavour took over 4 hours and we must have burnt off all the calories we consumed on the BBQ the previous day. Best of all, we were able to load our old anchor chain into a wooden dinghy belonging to one of the Maltese fishermen, and he happily took our old chain in exchange for borrowing his rugged little boat. Once again, we experienced a challenging but rewarding day aboard our floating home. And with the help from the wonderful people of Malta, this sailing destination will stay in our memories for ever. For us, this is what life at sea is all about!
Come sail away with us! We take you through the process on our sailing yacht Northern Exposure! ***Sailing employs the wind acting on sails. From prehistory until the second half of the 19th century, sailing ships were the primary means of maritime trade and transportation; exploration across the seas and oceans was reliant on sail for anything other than the shortest distances. Naval power in this period used sail to varying degrees depending on the current technology, culminating in the gun-armed sailing warships of the Age of Sail. Sail was slowly replaced by steam as the method of propulsion for ships over the latter part of the 19th century – seeing a gradual improvement in the technology of steam through a number of stepwise developments. Steam allowed scheduled services that ran at higher average speeds than sailing vessels. Large improvements in fuel economy allowed steam to progressively outcompete sail in, ultimately, all commercial situations, giving ship-owning investors a better return on capital. In the 21st century, most sailing represents a form of recreation or sport. Recreational sailing or yachting can be divided into racing and cruising. Cruising can include extended offshore and ocean-crossing trips, coastal sailing within sight of land, and daysailing. Sailing relies on the physics of sails as they derive power from the wind, generating both lift and drag. On a given course, the sails are set to an angle that optimizes the development of wind power, as determined by the apparent wind, which is the wind as sensed from a moving vessel. The forces transmitted via the sails are resisted by forces from the hull, keel, and rudder of a sailing craft, by forces from skate runners of an iceboat, or by forces from wheels of a land sailing craft which are steering the course. This combination of forces means that it is possible to sail an upwind course as well as downwind. The course with respect to the true wind direction (as would be indicated by a stationary flag) is called a point of sail. Conventional sailing craft cannot derive wind power on a course with a point of sail that is too close into the wind.

We discuss out first week on the Mardi Gras. The Back to Back Debarkation and Embarkation Process, and share our thoughts on the ship and the food.
We add shelves to our closets, a baffle to the chain locker, and repair a couple of leaky deck prisms. With less than a month remaining before it's time to splash the boat, we're feeling the pressure to button up our projects so that we can start moving our things onto the boat. The new storage spaces will be hugely beneficial for keeping our belongings and gear properly organized. ~ Ben, Tambi, & Molly | "SAILBOATSTORY" Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE and join us every FRIDAY for a new episode! * If you read this, creatively use the words PRISM & LEAKS in a comment. We had to lower the masts for the low bridges on the Illinois Waterway. Now that we are on the Mississippi River, the are no more low bridges. We are lifting the masts back into place for the remaining journey to the Gulf of Mexico. This is a short video showing the schooner masts being raised.
Tom Peelen shows how to pick and choose your whisker and also deploy them. ► Downwind Pole Review: https://www.forespar.com/whisker-poles.shtml ► Select a Whisker Pole based on your boat model: https://www.forespar.com/WhiskerPoleByBoatModel/ Whisker poles are used to "wing out" the jib when sailing downwind. Sailors who have experienced downwind sailing without one can appreciate the value of being able to stabilize the jib, enabling the sail to work more efficiently and without the noise of the sail flopping in the wind and waves. Forespar manufactures the finest and most complete line of Whisker Poles in the world. In today's video though, we take a tour of the progress we've been able to make up to this point - kind of the make or break it point of temperatures now cooling too low for us to be able to work with resins without using the assistance of heaters. In some areas this is very easy, and others....well, I guess we'll be finding that out as soon as we return from Amsterdam. I try to show the completed areas from Max Cruise's hull 04 & 06, to give an idea of what we still have left to do. And spoiler alert, it's a lot. But, our schedule is now really opening up for the remainder of fall and through the winter, so hopefully we'll be able to get very full work weeks in and have a lot completed by the time temperatures warm up again next year for us to be able to bond the cabin top on. We hope you enjoy the tour, and please let us know of any tips or tricks you know that will help us speed the process along! :D We hope you enjoy! During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing". Much to our surprise, we received notice to LEAVE the USA immediately and head to Guatemala. We needed to average 6kts to avoid a possible tropical disturbance heating up south of the entrance to Livingston. This video captures the 5 day crossing with the first 8 hours being the busiest we have ever had on passage. Enjoy the scenery, the nature and the adventure of an ocean crossing. #sailing #GUATEMALA #RIODULCE #drytortugas #unitedstates #sailboat #passage #livingston NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. In this episode we sail/motor to Oeiras near Lisbon, Portugal, seeing dolphins along the way. Touring Lisbon by Tuk Tuk, we get a chance to explore this larger city, the capital of Portugal. Finally, setting out further south with a new crew member, we see more dolphins, stop in at Setubal and Sines, and fly the newly-patched A2 spinnaker sail across calm seas. Thanks for following!
