I have sailed a number of widely different boats since arriving in Barbados four weeks ago, videos of those will be posted later! However the one that gave the most fun for the least effort was a 26ft Firebird catamaran. No winching needed, yet speeds in the high teens are easy. The Firebird was a popular Micromultihull catamaran built in the UK in the 1980s until sadly the boatyard was destroyed in a fire. Phoenix was one of the last to be built. I had sailed a sistership in the mid 90s when I crewed for Graham Goff and we won the UK National Championships, I had also sailed Peter's Firebird when I last came to Barbados 20 years ago So it was great to be asked out once again. The west coast of Barbados is a great multihull sailing area, with flat water, strong winds and usually a close reach in either direction. Unfortunately the rainy season has still to end, and when it rains in Barbados it really rains! Peter said it was the first time in 20 years that he had enjoyed sitting in a hull! Of course the wind died when the rain stopped so we had a gentle sail home in a gradually increasing wind. Hopefully I'll be able to sail it again before I leave.

We wanted to do ocean passage on the Rapier 550 'Blue Wonder" catamaran so we decided to join in with the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) in November 2021. We left from Gran Canaria and sailed direct to St Lucia. We loved the trip and it gave us some useful insights into the Rapier's speed vs comfort. At the time of filming this episode I had been out there behind the helm everyday for what seemed like an eternity so I was experiencing emotional highs and lows. This video is a good example of what you will be up against Sailing 1000 nm's.

We decided to do some detailing on Isabella, a little wet paint and some improvements to the flooring. The cockpit floor was sanded, painted and then covered with interlocking Dri-Dek tiles. Down below in the cabins and saloon areas we had previously painted small areas of exposed fiberglass. This time Steve covered those areas with indoor-outdoor carpet which is not our favorite choice for a boat. Reasoning these areas will not see any foot traffic we decided to go ahead and use the carpet and it made for a much cleaner look. We added wood looking tiles which were previously in the cockpit to the flooring in the crew. Using weather stripping we outlined some areas around the flooring in the aft cabins and salon and gave the galley a different look with new anti-fatigue floor mats. Finally, some areas around the hatches were a little rough looking and they have now been smoothed with nylon webbing. Isabella is really coming along. We’ve made many improvements and still have more ahead. It was nice to complete some improvements that people will actually see when they visit.
