Its an unusual wind today so we'll be reaching in Lulu the Drascombe Lugger down the lake for a change in a bit of a grumpy wind. Die Backsteinroute als Segeltörn mit der „FeO“ von Lübeck bis Stettin als Spagat zwischen Kultur, Segelszenen und Bordleben. Doch was hat der Törn mit den Backsteinen zu tun? Viele Segler hatten diese Route schon in ihrem Kielwasser oder haben sie in ihrer Planung. Genau da setzt dieser Film an. Die „FeO“ nimmt sie mit auf die sogenannte „Backstein-Route“ zwischen Lübeck und Stettin. Dabei segelt man auch auf den Spuren der mittelalterlichen Handelssegler. Besucht man die bekannten Sehenswürdigkeiten der alten Handelsmetropolen wird man feststellen, dass viele etwas gemeinsam haben: Die schönen Backstein-Bauwerke aus gebranntem Ton, die scheinbar für die Ewigkeit errichtet wurden. Baufreudige Bürger, Hanseaten und die Kirche schufen trutzige Stadtmauern, stolze Giebelhäuser, fantasievolle Rathäuser und eindrucksvolle Kirchen. Gotisch geprägt entstanden sie überwiegend zwischen 1200 und 1600 und gingen in die Geschichte als „Norddeutsche Backsteingotik“ ein. Begibt man sich also auf Tour, um die bauhistorischen Perlen anzuschauen, ist man auf der Backsteinroute. Man wird die einst so mächtigen Hansestädte von Flandern bis Tallin nicht alle besuchen können, doch fügen sich einige gut in einen Törn entlang der deutschen Ostseeküste ein – und davon will der Film berichten. Wir erleben Wismar und Stralsund mit dem von der UNESCO geschützten Weltkulturerbe, segeln nach Rostock und Greifswald, zum lieblichen Eiland Hiddensee, queren den Jasmunder Bodden und rasten bei den Festspielen des populären Freibeuters Klaus Störtebeker auf Rügen. Über die einsame Insel Ruden geht es wieder hinaus auf die Ostsee, an Usedoms Küste entlang und über Swinemünde nach Stettin. Zurück führt der Törn über das Achterwasser, den Darß entlang, nach Warnemünde und abschließend in das einstige Zentrum der mächtigen Hanse, nach Lübeck. Musik von Highland –sparsamer Einsatz, authentischer Ton überwiegt.

It's snowing!!! Hardly anything, but still. My side of the marina is full of ice, and a few boats needed moving around so ABC staff did a spot of icebreaking. It was a little disconcerting hearing it all breaking up. A few days later when it had all melted the narrowboat Ganymede went on manoeuvres! The poor diesil tank has been half empty for a while as the engine has been dud so I havent been able to fill it - you should keep it topped up to reduce the risk of diesil bug. So the big day came, the first run since the engine was fixed. It was a little challenging due to a lot of hire boats in storage, an incoming boat to avoid, and the fact that boats don't reverse well and I don't really know what I'm doing anyway! Choas ensues. Big thank you to staff at ABC for guiding me in! Your time, patience, and instruction is always greatly appreciated.

I divert west of the classic sailing route from the US East Coast to the Caribbean, hoping to avoid an area of strong winds resulting from a low pressure system to the southeast. I am confident that I will be able to work my way east further down the track, before encountering the easterly trade winds. Nonetheless the brisk winds arrive, and while filming my little ship romping through the white capped sea the poetry of John Masefield comes to mind.
