Lezioni di Vela - Vento Forte - Randa e Terzaroli - Episodio 10Ridurre le vele con vento forte, in particolare prendere o dare le mani di terzaroli, il tema del decimo video-episodio di Scuola di VELA, in cui scopriamo come effettuare una manovra perfetta su una barca da crociera. Ridurre le vele con vento forte, prendere mano di terzaroli Prendere mani di terzaroli, ridurre la superficie del fiocco, sono le manovre da svolgere per ridurre la superficie velica esposta al vento, e adeguare la velatura al vento man mano che intensifica. Nel video di oggi, i nostri esperti di vela, illustrano oltre a come regolare la randa, come prendere una mano di terzaroli e ridurre la velatura, direttamente dal pozzetto in totale sicurezza, cosi come avviene su tutte le barche da crociera moderne. Prendere la prima mano di terzaroli, con il circuito La procedura che troverete nel video, è quella moderna con circuito, molto diversa da quella classica che ancora viene richiesta agli esami della "patente nautica". Tutte le barche a vela da crociera ormai da decenni, hanno infatti un boma moderno dotato di doppio circuito per le borose della prima e seconda mano. Come vedrete nel video, all'arrivo del vento forte, si fa tutta la manovra in totale sicurezza rimanendo in pozzetto, senza dover andare alla base dell'albero... per cui non troverete nel video illustrato come "incocciare la brancarella sul corno di trozza" semplicemente perché questa manovra si trova ormai solo su barche a vela da regata o su barche da crociera molto datate. Serkan kämpft mit Seekrankheit, Carl mit einer verstopften Kloschlüssel, Arzum unter Deck am Herd und ich mit dem Namen unseres See-Trampers. Heißt er nun Kurt oder Carl? Ach, egal! Jedenfalls ist er eine Bereicherung an Bord. Je mehr wir uns dem Archipel westlich des Senegal nähern, um so mehr Besuch bekommen wir. Immer wieder landen Fliegende Fische auf der Dilly-Dally, einer trifft sogar Arzum am Kopf. Das Dumme ist nur, die Viecher stinken und schuppen wie blöde. Am letzten Tag unseres Törns können wir endlich den Parasailor setzen. Der Vorteil: die Welle wird kaum noch auf das Boot übertragen. Der Nachteil: Wir sind viel zu schnell. Unsere errechnete Ankunft liegt bei 2 oder 3 Uhr nachts. Da wir keine elektronische Seekarte mit den diversen Wracks vor Mindelo haben, drosseln wir die Fahrt, um mit der aufgehenden Sonne in der Ankerbucht einzulaufen. Hallo Africa! Das Einchecken ist erstaunlich einfach, die Beamten sind unglaublich freundlich. Einen halben Tag später läuft auch die Barracuda ein. Und dann ist da noch das Ocean Race.

In an effort to lighten the load and get rid of useless accumulated spare parts and general stuff we wade into the cabin and decide to use up foam back vinyl left over from last winters projects to brighten the unloved cabin. That was mistake number one, because boat jobs are NEVER that straight forwards or easy , we discover that the varnish has never been applied properly and is all flaking off when we try to sand it for a re-coat , left with no other options we set about stripping it all off. Making memories with my Pops. My 88 year old father is home with hospice care. So we are making the most of every moment. Did I mention that my sister and I are both Registered Nurses. Since the Sportfish and the sailboat are covered for winter, we took the camper out by the ocean in Jamestown, RI. This is a great spot with beautiful water views of Newport and the Newport bridge. During the boating season we enjoy day cruises to Newport by boat. Block Island is also a short boat ride from here. For the cooks out there, the octopus is from 10Rocks tapas restaurant in Pawtucket, RI. The make excellent Cape Verdean food and they are ranked as a top restaurant in the State of RI. The biggest boat I sailed in Barbados was, in fact, the biggest boat I have ever sailed - the 100ft long engineless schooner "Ruth". I got a ride by sheer chance, being in the right place at the right time. It seemed some others in the crew were in the same boat(!), indeed some had never even sailed before. Ruth was designed by Thomas Colvin and is based on the Grand Banks fishing schooners of 100+ years ago. Surprisingly, it's actually less than 10 years old and was built in part for day charters/sailing instruction and in part for trade, as it also has a big hold for inter-island cargoes. Obviously a 100ft long boat cannot have sail controls led aft, as is the norm on smaller boats these days. So to avoid a lot of running around the crew naturally divided into 3 groups. I was mainsheet trimmer, (with some helpers) so I never saw what was happening at the foremast and I still have no idea how they handled the foresails or moored the boat. It all gave a fresh insight as to how they sailed tea clippers and men of war in Napoleonic times. The gaff mainsail is 145sqm, or around 1600sqft! with a 12m, 40ft long boom. Huge heavy wooden blocks did eventually lead to a winch but both hoisting the gaff and handling the main sheet was hard work for four of us. I found climbing out to the end of the boom, which extended out behind the stern and was maybe 15ft above the sea, somewhat daunting. I had to do that after mooring up to fit one end of the sail cover which naturally was huge, bigger than many small boat mainsails. Of course, as an engineless boat we had to pick up the mooring under sail. Somewhat challenging, especially as the freeboard was so high. But we made it, despite a riding turn on a cleat which required the whole crew - even the non sailors - to help untangle. The reason for the sail was to "race" the "Tres Hombres", another engineless boat, this time a cargo running brigantine that was leaving for Holland a couple of days later with a full cargo of rum. More on that in a later video. I took the heading photo from a bus a few days later. It was stuck in traffic, again I was at exactly the right place and time! http://www.schoonerruth.com/

I arrived at the slip to find my Davis Industries wind vane (aka windex) had been torn off the boat in a severe storm. The guys at 11 Mile Marina helped me find it and fish it out of the water...but it was not repairable. So I had to order and install a new wind vane. The original was a Davis Blacksmith Sport Boat model (for 16-28 ft boats) but I could not find any in stock, so I bought a new Davis Blacksmith Olympic model (for 12-20 ft boat) as a replacement. #Sailing #Precision18 #ColoradoSailing
