When you're building a sailboat in 2026, choosing how the boat will move is not as simple as it used to be. There are more options than ever before — diesel, fully electric, parallel hybrid, series hybrid — and every choice comes with compromises. In this episode we walk you through our thinking process, the challenges we faced while trying to source an engine, and the reasons behind the direction we decided to take for this boat. __________________________________ We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life, with our son Oli. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. Today’s adventure starts with a 5 hour road trip from Pattaya down to Koh Chang, where we jump aboard a Lagoon 400 catamaran for a beautiful sail through the islands of eastern Thailand. After a quick tour of the boat, we untie the lines and head out for an easy 10 mile sail south to Koh Mak. This part of Thailand has some of the most underrated cruising grounds in Southeast Asia — warm water, steady wind, and quiet tropical islands everywhere. Our destination is one of my favorite spots in the region… The Blue Pearl Bar on Koh Mak, an amazing little beach bar that’s perfect for watching the sunset after a great day on the water. Even better, the pups got to join us for the adventure, making it a perfect sailing day with the whole crew. Salut les loulous ⛵🐟. En arrivant au port, une petite lessive s’impose après plusieurs jours en mer. L’air est doux et l’atmosphère paisible. Nous partons ensuite nous balader dans les montagnes à proximité de la marina, déjà émerveillés par les reliefs sauvages de l’île. Nous louons une voiture pour explorer El Hierro, la plus occidentale des Îles Canaries. Très vite, les paysages deviennent spectaculaires : roches volcaniques sombres, falaises abruptes et arbres sculptés par le vent. Tout le long de la côte, la nature paraît brute et intacte, offrant des panoramas impressionnants à chaque virage. Le lendemain, nous découvrons un village typique d’El Hierro resté authentique, où le temps semble s’être arrêté. Camille nous fait un petit exposé passionnant sur une algue rouge invasive venue du Japon, rappelant combien l’équilibre marin est fragile. After riding out the swell from Storm Senyar in a sheltered channel in the southern Natuna Islands, we woke up to calm water and a new problem — fuel. With the storm now moving away we expected several days of light winds ahead, and after the previous passages we were running dangerously low. Just across the water we spotted what looked like a small floating fuel station — a fishing boat tied to a pontoon with a hut above it and a pipe leading down to several large drums. So we loaded the jerry cans into the dinghy and headed ashore to investigate. The fuel mission turned out to be a complete success thanks to some incredibly helpful locals, but what we discovered next was even more memorable. The village itself, on a small island south of Natuna Besar near the Anambas Islands in Indonesia, was one of the cleanest and most welcoming places we’ve come across in our travels. Colourful houses stood over the water, fishing boats lined the shore, and everywhere we went people greeted us with warmth and curiosity. Walking through the village reminded us exactly why we chose this life — not just for the sailing, but for the chance to meet people living closely connected to the sea and to their communities. Working on Osprey in Cherbourg, March 7th 2026. I am making new backstay lashings to replace the dynnema loops of unknown make and vintage. I have used this system on all thebdull running backstay systems I have ever run on Whitbread 60's, Volvo 60's and IMOCA 60. It's a specific lashing type, designed to be very strong (10 ton working load), easily visually inspected, adjustable and visually pleasing. After months in the Caribbean, we head back to Canada for some much-needed family time and a full taste of fall and winter. Our trip starts in La Beauce, where we spend time with Mamie surrounded by incredible fall colours. The kids soak up the crisp autumn air while we enjoy quiet family moments before winter arrives. Next we drive toward the Gatineau region to visit Nana. Along the way we explore beautiful hiking trails and make a stop at the incredible Parc Omega, where you can drive through the park safari-style and see animals up close from the car. Watching the wildlife wander right up to us was an unforgettable experience which Coral and Kai absolutely loved. But the biggest moment comes when winter finally arrives in La Beauce. At just two years old, Kai experiences snow for the very first time, true boat kid. When our good mate Jim asked us to help deliver his new catamaran, Pirate Pete, from Sydney to the Gold Coast, we didn’t hesitate. We departed from Sydney Harbour, cruised under the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and gave a nod to the Opera House, then slipped through the Sydney Heads to our first stop in Pittwater for a short sojourn. From there, it was a 121 nautical mile leg to Port Stephens before setting off on the long 342nm stretch north to the Gold Coast. In total the trip was 463 nautical miles over 82 hours at sea. There’s something about pushing into unfamiliar waters that sharpens you. Long night watches. Coastal traffic. Weather windows. Fatigue. Teamwork. Today we sail across Moreton Bay to take shelter from a passing supercell at Canaipa located on the north east tip of Russell Island While hiding from the storm we try our luck catching mud crabs with Eve and Consti, and Rob shows Consti how to safely restrain a mud crab.
