After an invitation we couldn’t refuse, we spend 24 hours at Kandooma Surf Resort, getting a glimpse of how most people experience the Maldives… with private bungalows, incredible food, and a level of comfort that feels worlds away from life on a sailboat. But before long, we’re back to what we know best — sailing south through the atolls, chasing waves, exploring remote islands, collecting coconuts, and anchoring in some of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen. From ice baths and endless buffets… to hermit crabs, palm trees, and quiet anchorages… this episode is all about contrast, perspective, and the lifestyle we’ve chosen. The Maldives is made up of nearly 1,200 islands, with only a small number home to resorts and local communities — and seeing both sides so closely together really made us stop and think. There’s a time and place for luxury travel. And then there’s life at sea. So… what would you choose? 👍 Like this episode if you enjoyed it 💬 Let us know in the comments — which would you choose? Dissecting the Art of Staying Upright: https://www.practical-sailor.com/safety-seamanship/special-report-dissecting-the-art-of-staying-upright Is the Fountaine Pajot 44 really one of the cheapest ways to buy a brand-new 44-foot cruising catamaran… and if so, what’s the catch? In this video, we take a hard, honest look at the Fountaine Pajot 44 sailing catamaran. Not a brochure walk-through, not a sales pitch, but a real buyer’s perspective aimed at sailors who are seriously considering ordering a new catamaran. Using full onboard tour footage, we break down what you actually get for the money, where Fountaine Pajot saved costs, and why this boat has quietly become one of the most talked-about value propositions in the mid-40-foot catamaran market. We cover the real-world specs, layout choices, and livability that matter to buyers planning to cruise or live aboard. We also dig into the ODSea+ hybrid propulsion option, how the available 2000 watts of solar changes day-to-day life at anchor, and whether modern energy systems like this are worth the added complexity. Just as importantly, we talk about why you might not want this boat. Sailing performance tradeoffs, system complexity, production-boat realities, and who this catamaran is absolutely not for. If you’re shopping for a new cruising catamaran and trying to decide where the smart money actually goes, this video is for you. Whether you’re comparing it to other mid-40-foot cats, wondering why pricing has gone crazy in recent years, or just curious how a boat this size can come in at this price point, let’s break it all down honestly. Fountaine Pajot 44, FP44 catamaran, new catamaran review, cruising catamaran, liveaboard catamaran, hybrid catamaran, solar powered catamaran, catamaran buying guide, new sailboat review, 44 foot catamaran, ODSea hybrid system, modern catamaran design, best cruising catamaran Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

► “We are proud to entrust the future of this innovative range of power catamarans to our friends at Jeanneau. With more than 70 years of experience and a worldwide network of passionate dealers, we are confident that Jeanneau will take the TH range to new horizons and deliver strong growth prospects." ► We wish every success to the new Jeanneau TH range and look forward to seeing its future flourish!” ► This was the message published on December 15 by the American company that had until then been in charge of the recent TH (Twin Hull) range. It was a strategic move by the Bénéteau Group, which had attempted to address the American market directly - and thus challenge the leading brand in cruising power catamarans, Aquila Boats, on its home turf. Ultimately, the Group’s “House of Brands” made its decision. ► There are no major changes to the models - except for the TH36, which has been discontinued in favor of the TH38, whose deck layout offers more usable space. “This range fits perfectly into the Jeanneau universe”: as a result, the marketing, communication, development, and commercialization of the TH range will now be overseen by the Vendée-based builder. ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! In this episode we rise first thing to hopefully get the Blue Caves to ourselves (which we almost do). The footage doesn't do it justice just how beautiful it was. We took turn manning big Smile, while we took the tender in with our friends. Sails up & it's not a race, until it's a race... Too bad for us rookies we had an issue with the head furling drum, which now reflecting on we could have sorted so much easier. Super proud of Hugh though who kept us into the wind as we resolved it. While we were out, we sailed just into Croatian waters to avoid an internet issue (which our friends had recently learnt).. Back in Boka Bay & we have had enough! We don't know how much longer we can last in this small corner of the world. I explain our visa, Shane contacts agents and we brain-storm ways we might be able to travel sooner. Quick duck in town, the electrician, who organised a roller for the chain, comes onboard and puts the exhaust fan with the batteries. Want early access to our videos? Sailing through the Suez Canal is unlike any other passage on Earth. In this full-length episode, we enter the canal at Port Said and navigate one of the world’s most important and tightly controlled waterways by sailboat. From towering container ships and nonstop construction to fishermen working at sunrise, this journey reveals the human scale behind a global artery of trade. What began as a distant dream a decade ago becomes reality as the horizon closes in and history surrounds us. Guided by Suez pilots, passing inches from giants of steel, and sharing the canal with families who have fished these waters for generations, this transit marks a turning point in our voyage. This is not just a crossing—it’s a moment where oceans, economies, and lives converge.
⛵ Bermagui → Eden → Merimbula: The Weather Window That Never Came In this episode 252 we sail from Bermagui down to Eden on the east coast of Australia, hoping to catch a weather window to cross Bass Strait and finally make it to Tasmania. After a week of waiting in Eden with nothing promising on the horizon, we head 10 miles north to Merimbula to explore a new town and wait things out. Three more weeks pass… and still no safe weather window. We explore, we hope, we check forecasts obsessively — but the opportunity never arrives. After four long weeks of waiting, we make the tough call to abandon our plan to sail to Tasmania and turn north instead. It’s a gutting decision, but safety comes first. Boat Fires Part 2: Galley Fires, Pan Fires & Gas vs Induction Cooking Galley fires are one of the most common and most dangerous fires on board — and many start with simple mistakes that are completely preventable. In Part 2 of this series, we focus on galley and cooking fires, including pan fires, gas systems, and whether induction cooking is a safer alternative for boats. In this video, you’ll learn: What pan fires are, how they start, and why they escalate so fast Why you should NEVER use water on a pan fire The correct response to a galley fire using lids, fire blankets, and extinguishers Why fire blankets are essential equipment on every boat Common galley fire risks most boat owners overlook The real risks of LPG / propane gas on boats Why gas leaks are especially dangerous in marine environments Gas safety essentials: lockers, solenoids, detectors, and hose inspections The pros and cons of induction cooking on boats Why induction reduces fire risk — but only if the electrical system is designed correctly Cooking fires don’t give second chances. Knowing how to react in the first few seconds can mean the difference between a minor incident and abandoning ship. ⚠️ Disclaimer This video is for educational purposes only. Always follow manufacturer instructions, marine standards, and professional guidance when working on electrical systems. After a few days in Olbia on Sardinia we sail north in shifty wind towards the Maddalena archipelago. Gitte finds her happy place and Anders do some tricky navigation. Litza do what she does best:) We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our sailboat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. Our goal is sail the Mediterrainean Sea and really enjoy life. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans.
