This week, we’re hauling Thalia out of the water here the Dominican Republic, which is a completely different process from what we’ve done before! Instead of a lift, they use a trailer system with logs to accommodate our catamaran hulls. It’s slow, careful work, but we’re grateful for the attention to detail. After a quick rest in Mayaguana, we set sail once again, this time bound for Luperón in the Dominican Republic, where we'll spend hurricane season. But getting there isn’t easy. This leg of our journey takes us through rough upwind conditions, long nights at sea, fuel logistics in remote islands, and a lot of motor sailing. Michaela handles the water maker for the first time, we install a quick fix on the bathroom door, and battle wind shifts that have us tacking nonstop. But all of it, the exhaustion, the uncertainty, and the salty spray — is worth it when we finally arrive and are welcomed by a pod of dolphins and the incredible sailing community in Luperón. This is our longest passage yet, and it pushed us hard. The day has finally come, we’re crossing the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas! After months of unexpected breakdowns, repairs, and emotional recovery, we’re setting sail from Florida to the Abaco Islands aboard our Prout Snowgoose 37. What was supposed to be our final passage down the East Coast turned into a terrifying offshore sailing experience. Just hours left in our passage, our mainsail ripped, wrapping around the spreader. Then, our engine failed, leaving us battling massive waves and strong currents with only our headsail to guide us. After sailing the rest of thew way with only our headsail we had no choice left, we scheduled a tow into West Palm Beach. This journey tested us like never before.
