This nine mile stretch of water means sailors can avoid the arduous passage around the Mull of Kintyre to enter the Clyde Estuary. In search of more shelter and warmer weather we point Seagull south and make passages whilst dodging the storms. We become addicted to weather apps, and still find ourselves in a gale force 8 with wind on the nose and rain like needles! After 3 weeks in Ullapool avoiding strong wind warnings and lumpy seas, we finally get a weather window and make a bid for freedom. The only downsides are it is an overnight passage and tight in time before the next storm comes in. Keep watching to fond out how this journey with three tidal gates goes. In this weeks episode we land our dinghy on an uninhabited island and go exploring. There is something very magical about having an island all to yourself to explore at will on a sunny day. After this we head further up the loch to Ullapool to stay for a little while. Whilst here we meet up with friends and have a lot of fun sharing our favourite things to do. Did you know that Stornoway is so much more than a town on the shipping forecast? We sail into the harbour from a delightful anchorage and set off to explore the town. We walk through the grounds of Lews Castle taking in the fabulous views then pop inside for lunch before exploring the building itself. We were delighted to find a museum on site containing 6 of the original late 12th century chessmen found on the Ilse of Lewis. These are known as the Lewis Chessmen. Did you know Puffins mate for life, forming monogamous bonds that can last up to 20 years. They have have colorful beaks that change colour with the seasons, becoming brighter during the breeding season. In addition they are skilled divers, able to reach depths of 60 meters while hunting for food. Imagine our delight when we sail to the Shaint Islands off the Outer Hebrides and observe them in massive numbers. The noise was incredible, and the birds amazing. We also saw Razorbills here which was a delight! We observed diving for food and nesting. We decide its too noisy to anchor overnight and head to some quiet remote spots to enjoy a more peaceful night. The Minch is an extremely unpredictable sea area off the Western coast of Scotland, known for its rapidly changing weather and choppy waters. Did you know that Skye Bridge is 1.5 miles long or 2.4 Km. This week we walk over this iconic structure to the Ilse of Skye before returning to Seagull and sailing under this huge arched bridge. Sailing under bridges always feels me with fear that we will hit it, but you will have to tune in to see how it went. We start this episode by exploring the Scapa Flow museum on the island of Hoy in the Orkneys. A fascinating place offering lots of history on the significance of Lyness in both world wars and the use of Scapa Flow for fleets of ships. An entire fleet of German warships was scuppered here by their own crew! As the weather in Orkney has been pretty stormy for the past month we decide to make use the the wind we do have and head south towards Wick for an overnight stay before setting sail early the next day for Inverness.
