In this episode of our Arctic sailing adventure, we continue through the spectacular islands of Vesterålen in Northern Norway aboard our sailing vessel Polaris. With light winds on the nose, we motor from Stø towards Skipnes, passing quiet harbours, rugged mountains and late-season coastal landscapes. In Skipnes, the main season is already over. The harbour is calm, the hotel seems closed, but we still find a cold beer and a perfect end to a sunny day. The next morning, we leave Polaris behind and walk towards Tinden, an old fishing village and trading post. What looks like a short and easy hike turns into a wet, swampy trail, even after a long dry spell. Tinden itself feels almost deserted out of season, but the smell of fresh paint shows that someone is still caring for this historic place. From there we continue to Skårvågen. The following morning brings thick fog over the harbour and coast, making navigation through the rock-strewn waters unappealing. Instead, we hike up Skårvågfjellet, 403 metres above sea level, rising above the fog into blue sky. As the weather changes and time runs short, we adjust our plans, leave the idea of Trollfjord behind, and set a shorter course towards Sortland. It’s a hull of a job, but it’s time to turn Isabella around so we can work on her starboard side. A few episodes ago, Steve polished and painted her green stripe on the port side of her hull. Now, we’ll work on the other side. Taking her out for a short spin Karen dawns her red bikini while Steve waxes poetic and does a cockpit dance. We pass by some new docks at a marina and enjoy some time out on the water. Docking is always like a controlled crash. Steve steers the boat while Karen catches the lines. On Isabella, it’s easiest to secure the stern line first since the bow thruster makes the bow a lot easier to handle. Ohhh, if we only had a stern thruster, too. Our existing bow camera quit working. Installed a Garmin GC100 in its place. So far so good with the camera performance. Installing a Garmin update seems to have corrected some of the complaints about it dropping the video frequently. We shouldn’t have left when we did… but we sailed anyway. In this episode of Sailing Sunday, we sail to the Bahamas on a 3-day ocean passage after rushing across the USA to get back to our boat. With almost no sleep, we left the dock and crossed toward the Bahamas, dealing with rough seas, bad timing and a weather window that didn’t go to plan. This turned into one of the most exhausting short passages we’ve had. We missed our weather window, spent days smashing straight into wind and waves and ran into a few unexpected problems along the way… including running out of fuel offshore. Day 3 sailing from Little Jumby Bay to Ffryes Beach featured tricky technical conditions with clashing wind directions, briefly stalling all boats in place before trades returned to push the fleet to the Riddim & Tides festival. La fatica è finita, ne è valsa la pena! L'ultimo video in cantiere a Scarborough è una gioia per gli occhi. Dopo aver sudato sette camicie, Y2K è tornata letteralmente a specchio. Con la lucidatura finita e i nuovi adesivi originali applicati, Ale non riesce a smettere di ammirare la prua: sembra di essere tornati a 18 anni fa, quando la barca fu scaricata dal camion ad Antibes! Ma prima di fare il tanto atteso "splash down" (il varo) e tornare a galleggiare, il CPT Max ha ancora dei lavori tecnici fondamentali da completare. Abbiamo letteralmente tagliato via le vecchie e inaffidabili prese a mare americane in plastica per sostituirle con le eccezionali e robustissime Trudesign. E poi ancora: ingrassaggio dell'elica MaxProp, ripristino delle eliche di prua, applicazione della PropSpeed e una zincatura "al volo" per l'ancora. Alla fine si torna in acqua (celebrando con troppo junk food e il solito caffè per Alex!). ‼️Un ringraziamento speciale e di vero cuore va ai nostri nuovi amici Larisha e Alex: il loro lavoro è stato semplicemente fantastico, ma è soprattutto la loro grande simpatia e umanità ad aver reso queste giornate di fatica in piazzale molto più leggere e divertenti. The Tulane University sailing program is set to host the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Team Race National Championships from April 23-27. The team race championship regattas will be hosted by the Green Wave at the Southern Yacht Club with the races taking place on Lake Pontchartrain. The championship competition will kick off with the open team race championship from Thursday through Saturday, April 23-25. The open championships will be followed by the women's team races championship on Sunday and Monday, April 26-27. 16 teams competing in the open championship and one of 15 team in the women's championship. The full fields for the team race championships listed alphabetically are below: Fans can purchase the official gear of the ICSA Team Race National Championships get their own Tulane Sailing apparel by clicking HERE. We sail north through the Sandy Straits and into Hervey Bay proper – and this stretch of the K’gari coastline absolutely delivers. The water colour here is something else. Clear, vibrant, and constantly changing as we make our way past remote beaches and rugged cliffs. It’s one of those moments that reminds us exactly why we chose this life. We drop anchor just south of Triangle Cliff for some well-earned rest and reset. No rush, no agenda – just time to slow down and take it all in. And of course… good food is still a priority out here. We whip up a delicious Lebanese lunch onboard (because boat life doesn’t mean compromising on great meals), before winding down with a spectacular sunset over the bay.
