Can a simple rubber snubber really make a difference when anchoring a yacht? In J-Log 190, Jenny looks at the benefits of adding a rubber mooring compensator to our anchor snubber and why such a small piece of equipment can make life at anchor noticeably more comfortable. When a yacht is anchored in stronger winds or a choppy sea, the movement of the boat can create sudden shock loads through the anchor snubber and chain. Adding a rubber snubber provides extra elasticity, helping absorb some of those loads before they are transferred to the boat and anchoring system. Jenny explains why we use one aboard our yacht and how it can help reduce snatching, noise and sudden loads on the anchor gear. A few days ago, I completed an exploratory journey through Shizuoka, Japan's leading prefecture for healthy life expectancy and one of the country's most compressed Red Zones. I will return to go more in-depth Since I was nearby, I made a detour to visit the small piece of land farmed for nearly seventy years by the first "Red Zone Rebel" I ever met, long before I even knew what the Red Zone was. She remained active until only weeks before she died at ninety-five. Today, her fields lie abandoned. This short reflection isn't really about farming. Nor is it a nostalgic longing for the past. But it is about treasuring and learning from dying concepts that help people age well, including `Satoyama`, and the art of community, and the cultural threads that may be disappearing with Japan's last cohort of super-agers. What is the Red Zone? The Red Zone is the period between healthy life expectancy and life expectancy—the years when illness, frailty or dependence increasingly shape daily life. One month. How did we get here already? I think arriving in France changed something in my head. For months I’ve been running around trying to get Showgirl ready, solving one problem and immediately finding the next one, and the race has always been this thing waiting somewhere in the future. Now I’m here. The other boats are here. The other sailors are here. Everyone is working, fixing things, running around trying to finish their own ridiculous to-do lists… and weirdly, that has made me feel calmer. Maybe because I’m not the only one who isn’t sitting here completely ready with my feet up. 😂 Monday everything officially starts. Checks, inspections, tests, the whole program. And then somehow four weeks later we’re all going to sail away. I’m trying to remind myself to actually enjoy this bit too. I don’t want to spend the next month so focused on getting ready that I completely miss what is happening around me. Because soon enough, all this noise and all these people will disappear. And it’ll just be me and Showgirl for eight months. One tiny month. This is actually happening. 🌊

It’s no secret that the world’s most famous regatta has been having a tough time in recent years, many other events around the world have been too. But not many other events were thinking about how to make their 200th regatta one to remember. Fortunately, among the many thousands of competitors who have at some point or repeatedly felt the draw to the Solent for a week of racing in the middle of the UK summer, a large number had already put the date in their diary. And for once, the weather showed up as well to help create a spectacular event. In fact, so good that there were more stories than we had time to tell straight away. So, in the first of a number of features, here’s our opening thoughts, and more importantly those of a wide range of competitors, on some of the things that made the 200th edition of Cowes Week so special.

Waking Up in "Crocodile Alley" ... This Volcano is Alive! 🌋🦈 We left the safety of Wilson Harbor and headed straight into a gauntlet of squalls, lightning, and shifting winds. Our mission? To cross the channel to Kolombangara, a massive dormant volcano known locally as the "Water Lord." The crossing was wild, but the ocean provided—landing both a Barracuda and a Wahoo before the sun went down. However, the real test came at the finish line. Our spotlight died just as we were navigating the narrow, reef-fringed entrance in total darkness. We finally dropped anchor, only to look out and see the unmistakable glowing eyes of a Saltwater Crocodile watching us from the shore. Despite the "neighbors," we woke up to a world of absolute magic. Kolombangara’s volcanic soil leaches rich nutrients into the sea, creating a vertical oasis. Freediving the steep drop-offs, we were surrounded by an explosion of life: Eagle Rays, sea turtles, and a rare encounter with a Hammerhead Shark. While the nature here is world-class, we’ve learned that the true heart of the Solomon Islands is its people. Last week I fell in love with an atoll. Tied to palm trees just feet away from the beach... but all things must come to an end at some point. So today, I say goodbye to this beautiful, special place.
