Episode Summary In this episode of the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast, hosts Bela Musits and Mike Wasserman chat once again with the fascinating Phil Haydon, a retired neuroscientist and experienced long-distance solo sailor. Having previously discussed his non-profit, Sail For Epilepsy, Phil returns to share invaluable insights gleaned from his professional expertise in brain science and his thousands of miles logged at sea. The conversation focuses on a critical, yet often overlooked, aspect of long-distance sailing: sleep management and watch schedules. Phil explains the neuroscience of sleep in simple terms, using the analogy of a balloon filling with air (sleep pressure) to illustrate why consistent, strategic napping is crucial for safety and cognitive function on multi-day passages. He reveals that most human-error disasters, including high-profile events like the Challenger accident, involve sleep deprivation as a contributing factor. Listeners will learn practical tips for optimizing their own watch schedules, whether sailing solo or with a small crew, and the importance of banking rest before you need it. Key Takeaways & Highlights The Science of Sleep Aboard: Understand the "sleep homeostat" (sleep pressure) and how to manage it effectively while on watch. Short-Handed Preparedness: Phil emphasizes thinking ahead, preparing meals in advance, and having three to four contingency plans for every maneuver The Danger of Fatigue: Learn why cognitive function is severely impaired when sleep-deprived and the real-world safety implications for sailors. Naps as a Strategy: Discover the power of "banking" sleep with short 10-minute naps or planned 90-100 minute cycles to avoid deep-sleep grogginess Real-World Application: Mike and Bela reflect on their own experiences crossing the challenging Gulf Stream or navigating crowded channels, highlighting how Phil's advice can be instantly applied. Resources Mentioned Sail For Epilepsy: Learn more about Phil's non-profit organization. Bermuda One-Two Race: A great training ground for solo and double-handed sailing out of Newport, Rhode Island. Why folded steel sail boat construction works. No ships lost.
After a long winter and a tune up the engine was so hard to start I had to bring in a wizard!!! We are getting ready to sail into 2026!!
In this video I break down why big sailboats aren’t selling and why the sailboat market feels like it’s slipping hard right now. Ocean Passage Making is the pinnacle of a sailing career. Sailing a small boat out of sight of land, with the next landfall days or even weeks away, is the greatest test of your sailing ability. Join Captains Tursi, Mummert and Gifford as we discuss the preparations we are making for this year's Ocean Passage Making courses from Norfolk to Mystic and back. We'll discuss weather routing, provisioning, boat and crew preparation and answer your questions about this challenge.
We pointed the bow into one of Southeast Alaska’s most talked-about stretches of water… long, shallow in places, narrow the whole way through, and constantly moving with tide and current. Rocky Pass isn’t something you rush. It’s something you read. We timed our run for slack, took it slow, and worked our way through tight channels, dredged sections, and areas where the rocks sit just under the surface. At times it feels wide open… until it doesn’t. This was the most technical passage we’ve taken the Alaskan Gypsy through so far. An 80' steel schooner doesn’t leave much room for guessing in water like this. In this video: Aerial drone footage of the full transit Real-time navigation through tight, shallow sections A custom original song written for this run What it actually feels like to move a big boat through constantly changing water There’s a moment out here where it stops feeling like a route… and starts feeling like something that knows you’re there. We’re grateful for the window, the conditions, and the chance to move through a place like this. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Entering Rocky Pass 1:09 Where we are + Gypsy-style navigation 2:03 Why this passage is tricky 2:46 Local intel + what to expect 5:27 First tension – submerged hazards 5:57 Committing to the run 6:25 Timing the tide 7:20 Conditions line up 8:11 A rare calm window 10:27 Approaching the tightest section 11:02 Custom song begins 13:14 Settling into the rhythm 15:08 “They don’t call it that for nothing” 16:18 Surroundings + wildlife 18:21 Tightest water we’ve run on Gypsy 20:00 Why this passage matters 21:35 Reflection + gratitude 22:57 Through the narrow

Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 339 Nearly a week of grey skies, rain, and nowhere to go. That's the paradise tax — and this week, it finally came due. But when the sun broke through and the water turned that perfect shade of turquoise? Every single grey day was worth it. After surviving the tail end of a cyclone system stuck on the boat with serious cabin fever, we set sail for a new island in Fiji's Yasawa chain. We were chasing sunshine, a stunning anchorage, and honestly — a cold Corona on the beach. We found all three. This episode is pure reward. A beautiful remote resort, crystal clear turquoise water, cocktails, sunshine, and the kind of afternoon that reminds you exactly why you traded a life on land for a life on the water. ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 Welcome to WE|Sail 00:58 Sunshine is back — drying out after the storm 04:14 Setting sail for a new anchorage 06:26 New island, no luck finding food or drinks 12:55 Anchored front row to a passing thunderstorm 15:07 Sunrise, new day, new sail 16:36 The perfect anchorage — finally 19:07 Resort found — food, cocktails and sunshine 22:04 Coronas on the beach — we earned this 25:06 The tipsy dinghy ride back to Va ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⚓ Thanks for watching! In this episode I close with the land, wirhmmy home, just off Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and pass through a traditional final gauntlet between Cross Island and the adjoining peninsula. The gap is only 1.7 Nm wide, giving Osprey a tiny target to aim for after 30 days /4350Nm at sea. In fog, drifting in very little wind, with her propellor 'unavailable to assist'; it's time to trust the plan, make careful preparations and take what is offered, as we draw within just a mile or two of our final destination. Not all boards on sailing catamarans are the same. Straight daggerboards. Curved C-Boards. Angled Boards. Centreboards. ▫️ They all have one thing in common though. They reduce leeway (especially in lighter conditions) and they give you a bit of vertical lift at speed effectively reducing your displacement through the water. If you want performance, you need boards. ▫️ What's your favourite design angle, or maybe you prefer the simplicity of mini-keels? ▫️ #yachts #design

Welcome aboard Zensation — a 2023 Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47 in the highly sought-after five-cabin layout. Join Steve McPherson, Certified Professional Yacht Broker and Consultant at ACY Yachts in Annapolis, for a walkthrough of this exceptional yacht. Why is the five-cabin Tanna 47 so desirable? Versatility, privacy, and comfort. Accommodating up to 10 guests—each with a private cabin and en-suite head—it offers a rare level of space typically found on much larger yachts, making it ideal for families, charter programs, or extended cruising. At the stern, a hydraulic swim platform (200 kg capacity) makes launching and retrieving the dinghy effortless with remote control operation. When not in use, it transforms into a private teak beach at water level—perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing—with a convenient hot/cold deck shower nearby. The cockpit is designed for entertaining, featuring multiple lounge spaces, seating for 10 at a large dining table, a cockpit refrigerator with built-in ice maker, and a gas BBQ for effortless outdoor dining. Above, the best-in-class flybridge lounge seats 10 comfortably and offers sweeping 360° views—your rooftop terrace at sea. The mid-level helm station provides excellent visibility around the yacht while keeping the skipper connected to guests. Protected by a canvas bimini and enclosure, it offers comfort in any weather. All sail controls lead to the helm, and dual electric winches make short-handed sailing remarkably easy. The full Garmin Smart Cruising suite includes a chartplotter, radar, wind/speed/depth displays, autopilot, and VHF for intuitive navigation. Inside, large opening doors create seamless indoor-outdoor living. The bright salon offers panoramic views, while the fully equipped galley features dual refrigerated drawers, optional freezer space, stove, oven, microwave, and ample provisioning storage. The convertible dining table creates an additional berth, increasing sleeping capacity to 12. Comfort extends throughout with 110V reverse-cycle air conditioning in the salon and every cabin. The five-cabin, five-head layout includes four queen cabins—one with private cockpit access—and a fifth bunk cabin perfect for children. LED lighting, outlets, and USB ports throughout create a true at-home experience. Built for independence, Zensation features 1.7kW of solar power, a 13.5kW Onan generator, upgraded systems, premium ground tackle, electric windlass controls at the helm, and thoughtful maintenance upgrades, including epoxy barrier coating, fresh antifouling, and protective rub rails. Meticulously maintained, beautifully equipped, and duty paid in the U.S.—with no tariff headaches—Zensation offers luxury, capability, and effortless ownership in one exceptional package. With only 10 days before we splash we have two big goals...power up the galley from the batteries and get the solar panels installed. One went great and the other was a dismal failure...

After my first crossing to England, my engine started failing just before entering Lowestoft. Just before the sandbanks. What followed was a hands-on repair: a broken alternator bolt, a slipping V-belt, and multiple trips to a tiny hardware shop in the harbor. In this video, I take you through the full process—problem-solving at sea, figuring things out step by step, and getting the engine running again. Not everything goes smoothly, but that’s part of the journey. 💙 Love my videos? This Thursday's video is a bit different. We went to Sunsail's Agana base in Croatia to have a week sailing a cat. For those of us who have only sailed monohulls it's a great way to get some tuition, and experience what it's like cruising around in something with two hulls. We had a great time with Sunsail in Croatia and if you are thinking of booking any Sunsail course or holiday anywhere in the world make sure you use our link to get 15% off... https://www.sunsail.com/uk/offers/sailing-fair-isle-offer?utm_source=referral&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ss_uk_may_sfiyoutube_offer_2026
I’m back on the road in Thailand! In this episode, I start with a tease about a big announcement coming at the end of the video, then show you the truck I’ve been using to travel all over Thailand. From there, I set off on a 5-hour journey across Thailand, including a ferry ride over to the island of Koh Chang. Along the way, I talk about what it’s actually like to drive in Thailand — the roads, the traffic, the scooters, the chaos, and why it’s not as intimidating as some people might think. Once I make it to Koh Chang, I check into a waterfront Airbnb that’s only about $100 per night, rent a scooter, and get ready to explore the island. And finally… the big news: the brand new Sailing Doodles Crew App is officially live on the iOS App Store! The app is free to download, with limited free features, and full access available with a Crew Club subscription. I’ve been working on this for months, and I’m excited to finally share it with you. ► The MYBA is a professional organization founded in 1984, which has been organizing for over 30 years a charter-focused show reserved for industry professionals, brokers, and influencers. ► We asked photographer/videographer duo Nicolas and Romain Claris to share their insights on the 2026 edition held in San Remo: ► “More than fifteen units, both sailing and power, were gathered this year along a quay almost entirely dedicated to them. While not yet the majority at the show, multihulls are steadily gaining ground within Mediterranean charter fleets. Their consistently growing presence reflects changing usage patterns and increasing demand for boats offering space, stability, and comfort. From the ever-elegant JFA 80 to the Lagoon models (including the latest Seventy 7 built and the brand-new Eighty 2), as well as several Sunreef 80 and 70, a Power 80 by Fountaine Pajot, a Bali 58, and various custom builds, the offering proved particularly diverse — clients of charter agencies are truly spoilt for choice… Among the standout units, This Is It and Seawolf X drew significant attention. At over 43 meters in length, these exceptional catamarans are reshaping traditional market benchmarks.” ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests!
