This week aboard our sailboat we hit a huge milestone in the refit — installing the sail drives, mounting the props, testing a new eco-friendly rudder paint, and moving the engines into place using a DIY bridge crane we built ourselves. It was a big week of progress and one of our most satisfying yet. ⚓ Project 1: Installing the Sail Drives With the mounting surfaces prepped and aligned, we finally lowered the sail drives into position and secured them — a major step toward getting this boat back in the water. ⚓ Project 2: Installing the Propellers Once the drives were in, we fitted the props and torqued everything to spec. Another big checkmark on the list. ⚓ Project 3: Painting the Rudders with F2 Eco We tested F2 Eco, a new opalescent white marine coating that’s just entering the recreational yacht market. It looks stunning and promises environmental benefits — we’ll be watching closely to see how it performs. ⚓ Project 4: Moving the Engines Into Place To move the engines into their homes and bolt them to the sail drives, we built a DIY bridge crane out of Unistrut and used a compact chain hoist from Amazon. It worked beautifully and made this huge job manageable. Our anchor windlass suddenly stopped working — right when we needed it most. In this episode we dive into the full rebuild of our Maxwell anchor windlass after discovering five separate failures inside the unit: ✔ Motor repair ✔ Oil seal replacement ✔ Replaced the worn-out bushing ✔ Machined shaft key ✔ New electrical switch + fuse Timo takes the whole windlass into Kota Kinabalu (Borneo) — walking between workshops, engineering shops and parts suppliers — and somehow manages to fix every problem in just one day. Nous quittons La Corogne avec une seule fenêtre météo possible : passer juste derrière une dépression, avec 5 mètres de houle et un coup de vent annoncé le lendemain. Pas vraiment le choix… on doit boucler le convoyage et rejoindre les Sables d’Olonne. Quelques heures après le départ, un grain nous surprend : 29 nœuds. On réduit, on enroule, on tient bon. Heureusement, le gros coup de vent annoncé dans la nuit fera finalement « seulement » 26–27 nœuds, sans rafales. Le Golfe de Gascogne est vide, personne à l’horizon durant toute la traversée. Dernière nuit : en plein quart, je découvre le mystérieux plateau de Rochebonne et ses dizaines d’épaves sur la carte… ambiance mystique au milieu de l’Atlantique. Et puis enfin : le chenal des Sables d’Olonne, on vit la même image que les skippers du Vendée Globe ! On boucle un périple de 1840 milles nautiques et, symboliquement, la fin de notre formation à la navigation. On se sent prêts. MariaNoa ist klein, schwer, mollig... Unsere Dancing Queen springt aus dem Wasser, nur um mit einem lauten Knall wieder in ihr Element zurückzustürzen. Das hält höchstens ein paar Stunden an, dann ist die Crew einfach überfordert. Entlang der Küste von Ambrym und um Kap Matao Tiupeniu auf dem Rückweg zur Mele Bay auf Efate muss sich MariaNoa in Vanuatu zweimal beweisen. Fotoshooting Ein Freund schreibt einen umfassenden Artikel für die Zeitschrift „Palstek“ zum Thema Großserienyachten auf Langfahrt. MariaNoa ist gleich das erste Schiff einer ganzen Serie von Einrümpfern und Katamaranen, die im Rahmen dieser Serie ausführlich vorgestellt werden wird. Neben den textlichen Teilen, die aus einem mehrstündigen Interview hervorgehen, benötigen wir diverse Fotos. Brigitta war natürlich vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben passte als in meins. In den folgenden 6 Monaten hat Brigitta aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich über unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. We have always sailed with our dog but Travelling with animals adds a layer of complexity, therefore our hound dog Marley has been living it up at a doggy resort while we’ve been away. We couldn’t wait to get back to him. But as we reached the border into South Africa, we were hit with another curveball. Even though we had been out of the country for months, immigration granted us only seven days and advised we must fly home. Von Galaxidi geht es durch den Kanal von Korinth über die kleine Insel Trizonia und das bezaubernde Städtchen Nafpaktos Richtung Messolonghi. Auf dem Weg dorthin müssen wir unter der Rio-Andirrio-Brücke durchsegeln und uns dafür per Funk die Freigabe zur Brückendurchfahrt holen. Ein wirklich beeindruckendes Bauwerk! Mit ordentlich Wind von Achtern segeln wir weiter nach Messolonghi, wo Dirk erstmal die neuen Motorfüße einbaut. Der letzte Abend in Griechenland wird unvergesslich. Heike und Peter laden uns in die Berge zu einem herrlichen Spaziergang mit anschließendem Essen in Anatolis Cafebar ein. Schöner hätte der Abschied von Griechenland nicht sein können. Von nun an segeln wir nur noch nach Westen. Mal sehen, wie weit wir kommen. From Galaxidi, we sail through the Corinth Canal via the small island of Trizonia and the charming town of Nafpaktos towards Messolonghi. On the way there, we have to sail under the Rio-Andirrio Bridge and obtain permission to pass under it by radio. A truly impressive structure! With a good tailwind, we sail on to Messolonghi, where Dirk first installs the new engine mounts. Our last evening in Greece is unforgettable. Heike and Peter invite us to the mountains for a wonderful walk followed by dinner at Anatoli's café bar. Our farewell to Greece couldn't have been more beautiful. From now on, we'll only be sailing west. Let's see how far we get.

On a du beau temps cette année . Chaud mais pas trop… des bateaux mais pas envahis non plus, de la place au mouillage. Mais n est encore en juillet… On verra au mois d'aout. On se dirige vers l'entrée du golf de Patras, Mesolonghi, sur le continent. On attendait du vent et on s'y est abrité quelques jours. Ensuite direction plus au sud vers l'île de Zakynthos. Leg 2 of our big trek home – and what a run it’s been! We covered another 300 nautical miles over 10 days, dropping anchor at 8 beautiful spots between Cape Gloucester, the Whitsundays and North Keppel Island. There was some wily weather, plenty of sunshine, and a few of those golden sunsets that make the long days worth it. Somewhere along the way, our sail car gave up, but with a bit of MacGyver magic we managed to patch it up and keep sailing. We also had some cracking sails and a heap of fun tacking our way through – it feels good to finally be getting the hang of it! Oh, and the highlight? A 144cm Spanish mackerel that made us (the cat and the freezer) very happy. We’ve now notched up over 600 nautical miles on the trip south – only about 260 to go. The home stretch is in sight… though there might be a few detours yet.
