In this episode, we take on a 1,200-nautical-mile crossing of the Indian Ocean, sailing from Uligan in the Maldives towards Socotra. As we cross the Arabian Sea, we tackle a noisy problem high above us, servicing the mast sheaves in an attempt to silence a persistent creak. But it's what's happening around us that has us on edge. Twice, boats believed to be fishing vessels approach and attempt to come alongside. With active piracy warnings in the region, we're understandably very wary of any unidentified boats getting too close. We also catch a beautiful tuna along the way and show you how we report our position and passage to UKMTO, along with some of the piracy warnings and advisories we receive during the crossing. As we near Socotra, the passage takes another unexpected turn. We become trapped among multiple fishing nets, each stretching for more than 9 nautical miles. We're incredibly grateful to be travelling with two other yachts, allowing us to work our way through the maze together. But it's not without incident, with one of the boats becoming completely entangled and having to get into the water to cut themselves free. Between the two of us, we’ve been sailing for a long time. We know the theory. We know what a MAYDAY call sounds like. We know where every piece of distress equipment on this boat lives. But when an emergency actually happened, none of that seemed to matter. What we had was a pounding heart, a serious injury, and one very simple question: What do we do first? So we built something for that moment. It’s called Overboard, it’s free, and it’s available for anyone who wants it. There are three buttons: red, amber, and green. Each one takes you through a short list of what to do next, in the right order and in plain language. There’s a MAYDAY script you can read out loud, with your vessel name, call sign, and MMSI already filled in. There’s a PAN-PAN version, your position in the formats you’re likely to be asked for, a casualty log, and contact information for CIRM Rome, who provide free medical advice to vessels anywhere in the world. And it works with no signal at all. There’s no login, no account, no signup, and nothing leaves your phone because there’s no server. Add it to your home screen on all of your devices so it’s actually there when you need it. If you’re on an iPhone, you’ll need to add it using Safari rather than Chrome. Then put your phone in airplane mode and open it once to make sure everything works offline. By the time we left Great Inagua, the water coming aboard was about to become the least of our fluid problems. We leave Great Inagua for the 20 hour hop to Crooked Acklins, but not before removing our failed Starlink system and properly installing our new to us Starlink Mini. Wind and waves at Great Inagua send water over the stern and into the cockpit, and once we're underway, the ongoing oil issue with our port engine creates another problem when we start running short on diesel. We eventually make it into Jamaica Bay, where better weather and an anchor dive confirm we're well hooked, giving us a chance to settle in and relax for a couple of days. Weather apps and forecasts are very good. However, they sometimes don't get it right, sometimes don't agree, and sometimes we misinterpret them. We were anchored at Presque Isle Bay, Stockton Island, expecting a Lake Superior squall to briefly cause some minor discomfort for Vicki and I. Instead, I would up doing a serious anchor watch for 90 minutes in gale force winds with a lee shore behind us. It all went well. We did not drag. The wind peaked at 45.5 knots. If you are curious, our ground tackle was a 44 Delta anchor and 110 ft. of 5/16 chain. The scope was 7 to 1. It held just as it should, but in the strongest parts of the squall, I engaged the engine at idle to reduce the strain on the anchor chain. That also gave me some steerage, so I could keep Freelance's bow directly into the waves. That made for an easier ride.

The Round Turn and 2 Half Hitches. OK, the bowline is more useful on a boat, but this knot must be up there, right? Before Kyle and Jason can make the last connection, I have to uncover our buried main feed cable and route it into the transfer switch—right as a torrential downpour turns the job into a muddy mess. Once the power is on, we finish the lights, fans, smoke detectors, HVAC disconnects, and a few final electrical jobs. In this episode, we make the unexpected decision to leave Maupiha’a after less than a day and head for Aitutaki, crossing the remote stretch of the South Pacific known as “The Dangerous Middle” to revisit a place we last saw 13 years ago. But our sudden departure meant we were far from ready. During the three-day passage, we scrambled to process all of our fresh food, complete paperwork, navigate a skinny pass entrance, and med-moor in a muddy, coral-lined marina still under construction — on an island that wasn’t quite ready for its first boats of the season.
