Les Sables d’Olonne was buzzing from the early hours as the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe set sail on Sunday 10th November, with tens of thousands of fans lining the docks. The previous Vendee was held during Covid times without the razmataz, and it was clear the sailors were enjoying the crowds returning to the full, orchestrating the cheers as they went down the channel towards the start line. This year there are a record 40 IMOCA yachts taking part with 11 international sailors and 6 female sailors. In very light winds the fleet were away cleanly on a long start line, with the pin end seeing the most congestion. Carrying their largest headsails and spinnakers, the sailors ghosted away from the line on their epic 24,000 nautical mile odyssey. Early leader was Boris Herrmann on Malizia – SeaExplorer, with the fleet aiming to head south as quickly as possible to find more breeze. Yannick Bestaven is defending the trophy on his new yacht Maître Coq V but will face stiff competition from the likes of Charlier Dalin on MACIF, and a host of other top contenders. It would be fair to refer to this boat as the Ute of the Sea. She's a solid thing that will keep you comfortable with all the necessary luxuries but she's also built on a great foundation so will be perfect for those of you looking to utilise a RIB for some more serious boating. The performance is outstanding... potentially a little too exciting for some of you so consider getting this boat with LESS horsepower depending on your mission. I like that she's been built with lifting attachments for a crane and they have also designed in some comfortable features like that fold down aft sun lounge. Understanding the rig on your yacht and how it is set up is critical, all the way from when it is brand new. I spoke to Cyclops Marine's Ben Hazeldine to find out more about how their load cells can help with this. Getting your rig right from the outset, when you initially step the mast, can prevent wear and tear, by ensuring it's within its safe working loads and performing to its optimum. With a Cyclops load cell you can ensure your setup is what the manufacturer has recommended in their specifications. This gives sailors reassurance that when they go out for the first time in their new yacht, they are within the safe limits, it will perform as it should, and unnecessary wear and tear is avoided.

Kojiro Shiraishi is the skipper of the IMOCA DMG MORI in the Vendée Globe. At the age of 26 he became the youngest sailor to complete a non-stop single-handed circumnavigation, twice finished 2nd in the solo BOC Challenge. He’s also a big fan of Star Wars, and his favourite character is Obi-Wan Kenobi. This is his third Vendée, having competed in 2016 and 2020, and on 11th February 2021 he became the first Asian sailor to complete the Vendée Globe, finishing 16th. With the same boat, refitted with new foils, he is aiming for a top 8 position in this edition. Ambre Hasson spoke with Kojiro via a translator in Les Sables d’Olonne to find out more, while Kojiro found out more about Ambre’s Mini Transat campaign!

Lobster Boat plug... DONE! The plug is the most critical piece of the project, since it will be used to make the mold, which will be used for every Lobster Boat boat we make. Conrad Colman grew up in New Zealand, went to High School and College in America, and then immediately went to Europe having fallen in love with the Vendée Globe. Well travelled and highly experienced in many fields, Conrad is used to wearing many hats, which stands him in good stead for solo offshore sailing! This is his second Vendée Globe, having competed in 2016/17 where he completed the final 740 miles to Les Sables d’Olonne under jury rig after being dismasted. This is also the second time he is competing with a boat which is entirely fossil fuel free, powered entirely by renewable energy. When he finished the 2016/18 edition he was the first skipper to complete the Vendée Globe using no fossil fuels.

The 2024 edition will be Justine Mettraux’s first Vendée Globe, but she is no stranger to offshore racing, having competed in many singlehanded and crewed events, including the Figaro, three Ocean Races, the Mini Transat, the Transat Jacques Vabre and the Route du Rhum. Hailing from landlocked Switzerland, the Vendée Globe seemed a far-off dream initially, but she steadily built her experience and reputation, grabbing opportunities when they were presented and is now the skipper of Teamwork-Team Snef.
