In this episode, we continue our trek south – already 694nm down – with this passage taking us a further 261nm from Pancake Creek to the base of Fraser (K’gari) Island. After a great yet slightly traumatic side trip to Lady Musgrave Island, where we were smashed by a surprise 39-knot storm (check out Episode 47 for that chaos), we spent a few days riding out the spring storms in Bundaberg – including helping a fellow sailor remove a fishing lure from his back! Never a dull moment… From there, we pushed on to Fraser (K’gari) Island, spending 11 days exploring more of this stunning part of Queensland. On our way out of the Sandy Straits we took an alternative route that saved us a heap of time and proved to be far less shallow than expected – an excellent discovery for the logbook. We collided with yet another log! This is the 4th one in 12 months and I'm over it! Fortunately this collision was not too bad and we only suffered minimal damage to the rudder and were able to continue on or way. I will repair the rudder at a later date. After that we had a pretty relaxing sail and anchored at an amazingly beautiful island. It's not often that you get an island all to yourself in Indonesia and we really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Later a boat full of locals came past and told us this particular island was sacred and thought to be possessed by devil spirits and that we shouldn't go ashore under any circumstances! Wow ok. A few days later, sailing to a new island our Jib started to break apart. I've sort of been waiting for it too happen so wasn't too surprised when it blew apart. Now we are in need of an expensive new sail! Recorded March 8 & 9, 2025. She Tells Sea Tales is an annual event by Northwest Maritime that provides a welcoming and safe space for all women to share their connections to water. Proceeds from the event help support the Northwest Maritime’s women- and girls-centered educational maritime programs, including the Girls’ Boat Project. Join us in Port Townsend on March 7, 2026 for the next edition of this beloved event. Meegan Corcoran started her maritime career when she joined the US Navy in 2002. She served for 8 years and got out to pursue her dreams of being a marine biologist. That sort of happened when Meegan started working at Friday Harbor Labs as their Manager of Marine Operations where she oversaw their research vessel and science at sea. From there, Meegan was promoted to Port Captain for the University of Washington where she managed the global research vessel Thomas G Thompson and the R/V Rachel Carson. In that position, Meegan traveled to 13 countries and collected some harrowing experiences. Today, Meegan works for UNOLS as the Crewing Manager for the US Academic Research Fleet and helps oversee the operations of 18 research vessels nationwide.
