I attended a rare event in the X One Design class: the launch of a new boat. It has been 18 years since the last new X was launched, and X195 has been a project that long in the making. The XOD class holds a special place in my heart as I have a lot of family history in it, and I still find it extraordinary that a centenary event in a class where only 202 boats had been built (noting some have been lost to fire, storm, neglect and war) attracted 145 to a single startline during Cowes Week 2011. Some of the boats are antiques, but were being raced at times like they were go-karts, albeit much, much slower. Jonathan Clark's X195 has been named 'Turtle' and is actually the ninth XOD he's owned. Jonathan was drawn into the class when he noticed how owners keep their boats for years on end. He was fascinated as to how each sail slightly differently, with some being easier to tack, while others having turns of speed in certain conditions, but overall the racing is incredibly tight. The XOD has stood the test of time when classes around them get designed, become the next big thing, then fall away. Attendances at the big events wax and wane, but the club fleets - mainly Itchenor, Hamble, Lymington and Parkstone, with a few in Cowes and Yarmouth - remain as strong as ever. Jonathan's passion came shining through during the launch event. He was adamant the reason he finished the boat build was 'for the class', but I think he's addicted to the boats.

In Episode 64 of the Sailing Goat Series, we leave Trizonia Island behind and begin our sail through the Gulf of Corinth, heading for the historic harbor town of Corinth. The sail is smooth, but once docked, we receive local warnings not to leave the boat unattended overnight due to reports of gypsy gangs targeting boats for theft. So, we spend the night onboard, keeping watch and prepping for the next big moment: the crossing of the famous Corinth Canal. 🌉 About the Corinth Canal: The Corinth Canal is one of the most iconic engineering marvels in Greece. Opened in 1893, it connects the Gulf of Corinth (Ionian Sea) with the Saronic Gulf (Aegean Sea). The canal is 6.4 km (4 miles) long and only 21.3 meters (70 feet) wide, making it too narrow for modern cargo ships, but perfect for yachts. The steep limestone walls rise up to 79 meters (260 feet) and make for an awe-inspiring transit. The canal saves vessels approximately 430 nautical miles, eliminating the long route around the Peloponnese. It’s a bucket-list passage for sailors and one we’ve dreamed about since the beginning. 💨 Welcome to the Aegean Sea: As soon as we exit the canal, we’re greeted by classic Aegean conditions—38 knots of wind, but luckily from the stern. We picked the right day to cross: the wind and waves were with us, pushing us along as we navigated across a busy shipping zone packed with bulk carriers and container ships. 🏁 Approaching Athens: After a full day of intense but favorable sailing, we reach our final destination for this leg—just 2 miles from Athens, and ready to explore the capital of Greece by sea. 📍 This Episode Includes: Sailing from Trizonia to Corinth Overnight onboard watch in Corinth harbor Transit through the legendary Corinth Canal First taste of the Aegean’s power and chaos Downwind run to Athens through commercial traffic 💬 Join the Conversation: Have you ever transited the Corinth Canal or braved the Aegean? Got tips for sailing through busy shipping lanes? Drop your stories in the comments below—we love hearing from fellow sailors! 👍 If you enjoy iconic passages, unpredictable sailing, and real-life cruising moments, give this video a thumbs up, share it with fellow adventurers, and subscribe to the Sailing Goat Series for more. 🔗 Connect with Sailing Goat: Instagram: @nobodysride Instagram: @sailing_svgoat 📌 Hashtags: #SailingGoat #CorinthCanal #AegeanSea #SailingGreece #LiveaboardLife #CorinthToAthens #SailingAdventure #GulfOfCorinth ⛵ Join us as we sail through history, brace for the Aegean’s fury, and close in on Athens—one nautical mile at a time. Fair winds and following seas await!

This week, we tried to raise the first wall of our shed… and it didn't go so well. It was a scary moment—heavy wall, bad leverage, and our dog Oso just inches from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We thought we were ready. We weren’t. But like everything else in this project, we’re learning as we go. In this episode, we take you through the process of framing and raising our first walls—what went wrong, how we recovered, and what the experience taught us about building smarter, not faster. We’re documenting every step of our DIY homestead journey as we turn a raw piece of land in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina into our family’s forever home. Replacing the wood panels on the salon windows. Again Andy does a staining job without getting video for me. Apparently this was quite the process as he had to go to several stores to get the right color of stain. But in the end, the wood panel looks like the rest and you can't even tell that it was replaced. He did an excellent job color matching. About the project: Wood paneling was purchased in 4 ft x 8 ft sheets of 1/4 in paneling from Lowes. Total Boat Spar varnish was purchased on Amazon. Lots of new stuff happened this week, We are getting closer every day! ___________________________ Our prior boat - If you are interested in buying our previous boat, Supernova, a beautiful fully kitted out Prout Quasar 50, please send us an email at: sailingsupernova@gmail.com Supernova has tons of upgrades. 4kw solar, 2600 AH of lifpo4 lithium batteries. Full electric galley, watermaker, 2 years new electronics including auto pilot, radar and 16 inch chartplotter. Custom dinghy lift where you can leave the engine on (comes with 10.5 rib with almost new 20hp motor), new mainsail and jib, 14 foot by 7 foot custom hard top, dive compressor, two electric toilets with 2x 100 litre blackwater tank, put in 3 new fridge/freezer units, new prop shafts, 8 new underwater lights. We took the bottom down to gel-coat and put 6 layers of barrier coat on before new bottom paint (that was 3 years ago) and we replaced every through hull. We installed two new prop shafts and aquadrives. It has 4 staterooms, one oversized queen bed, one queen bed and to double beds with 4 heads but we are using 2 heads as just storage. You can live remote on this boat for months and months without needing to resupply (3 fridge/freezers, crazy amount of solar and giant lithium batteries etc). It still needs some cosmetic work inside and a couple of things here and there, but could cross oceans right now as is. We love this boat but we are aware we aren't going to get back anywhere near the money we put into her. If you're interested, let us know... we are very open to discuss any reasonable offers. ⚓️ Subscribe for more real-life real-time sailing adventures! 👍 Like the video if you love sailing! #aluminumboat #aluminumsailboat #sailingyacht Join Rob as he goes through every single floorboard on an Ovni 370 to reveal systems, access, storage, and lots of dust. We know that there is little opportunity to open every single floorboard at a boat show. That’s why we took the time to look under the floorboards aboard an Ovni 370 to give you an idea of where and how the systems are integrated. Our first observation was the sheer number of floorboards. It makes sense though – it’s much easier to open and remove smaller panels than to try to lift heavy and awkward panels, especially while underway. Another observation is that you can access every single system aboard. And perhaps the most surprising revelation was the dusty dry bilge! Stick around to the end for a bonus ‘under the beds’!
It’s a huge year for offshore sailing, and arguably the biggest event of the summer is the Rolex Fastnet Race. Within an hour of entries opening the Royal Ocean Racing Club had received a record 435 yacht registrations. The fleet will include weekend racers, all the way up to the mighty Ultim trimarans, and the spectacle of them leaving the Solent is one not to miss. Offshore racing can be dangerous, particularly at night, which Exposure Marine have recognised, and released a ‘Fastnet Race Kit’ of torches specifically designed for crews in races like this, with three essential lighting tools to enhance visibility, safety, and functionality at sea. Today we take a look at the three lights to understand the purpose of each and their advantages. Let’s start with the RAW Pro 2, as this is the light you’ll most likely be using during night operations on board. Preserving your night vision is paramount when sailing offshore, and the key to that is red light. This is due to rhodopsin, which is the light receptor of the rod photoreceptor cells of the retina, being insensitive to longer red wavelength light. A pure red LED helps maintain night vision, while also providing enough light to view charts or operate winches and trim sails on deck. The RAW Pro 2 comes with a headband, adjustable for your head size with velcro, and a rubberised strip on the inside to help it maintain position. The light itself is removable from the headband by taking it out of its clip. Operation is via a single button, with a short press activating the red mode and a longer press switching on its white light. Once the torch is on you can toggle between three different brightness settings in both red and white modes. Charging is via USB, but using its proprietary cable which holds to the light with a magnetic connector. You can’t attach it the wrong way round as the magnet will repel. Runtime from the 850 mAh lithium-ion battery in red mode is 2 hours at high brightness, 8 hours at medium and 40 hours at low. In white mode it’s 1 hour at high brightness, 4 at medium and 20 hours at low. These figures are written on the back of the light as a reminder. Next up is the Crew Carbon, which has the dual role of acting as a torch and a Man Overboard light. The first thing you notice is that it’s really lightweight at 95 grams, thanks to its carbon and marine grade anodised 6063 aluminium construction, and somehow packs in a 2600 mAh battery and a 1000 lumen LED. This light weight means the Crew Carbon floats, an essential feature for its MOB function. Its operation is via a button on the back, with a double press switching it on and then single presses to toggle through the three brightness settings. High gives a run time of 1.5 hours, medium 3 hours and low 6 hours. On high mode it is seriously bright, and you can feel the heat on your fingers if you put them close to the beam. The MOB function automatically activates when it's thrown into water, emitting a flash every second for up to 20 hours. The idea is if you have this on you, it can help a yacht or rescue service locate you, or if someone falls overboard then you throw the torch towards their position where they can grab it if they’re able, or it can highlight where the approximate location is of the person when you circle back to recover them. Charging is via another proprietary USB lead, this time with a more chunky connector. Charge time is 4 hours. Finally we take a look at the Spot Me SOS Strobe, which is a compact, waterproof safety device designed to enhance visibility in search and rescue operations, Again, this is made with marine grade anodised 6063 aluminium and weighs only 33 grams. This isn’t rechargeable like the other two lights, instead having a single CR123 battery and comes with a lanyard and clip, so you can attach it to your clothing. The light is activated by pressing down on the top, at which point it will emit an 80 lumens red SOS strobe for up to six hours. Overall, these are three highly-capable, extremely well-made and engineered devices which will prove invaluable to any offshore racing team. It’s worth having a read of the Exposure Marine Offshore Special Regulations Lighting Guide, designed to help crews ensure they meet OSR compliance. Sensible design around the cockpit which allows guests to enjoy the sail without having to participate in the sailing. While she is called the 46 LC for Long Cruise this is a refined, fast and elegant yacht that would hold her own in the cruising division of any regatta. If you want a serious cruising yacht with all the modern comforts plus decent fuel capacity giving you options then this yacht is it. But she is also a wonderful sail boat and a pleasure to sail both off the breeze and upwind. The Grand Soleil 46LC is a potential dream boat for many people in my opinion, and in this video Andrew and I discover the sailing abilities along with a deep dive into the interior layout and features of this Italian masterpiece. This won't suit everyone because she's in the higher price and quality range but if you have a big dream then this could very well be it. Enjoy. I took a look around the Seldén Mast factory with Richard Thoroughgood from Seldén to find out a bit more about how the carbon tow reels become the masts that we use when out sailing. Richard explains: “Everything we produce in the carbon range starts from a ‘wind file’, which controls reels of pre-impregnated carbon tow. Whether it is a product we have made thousands of - J70s, Musto Skiffs, ILCA composite top masts - or a yacht product (usually custom) we can alter the file to control the bend characteristics of the spar, the weight, or even cross-mix with glass fibre to keep costs under control. Everything is designed in house with our technical team.” Watching the winding process is mesmeric, as the machine travels up and down the rotating mandrel, creating each mast to a specific, pre-programmed design. We get to see the finished product out on the water, especially when a clear finish is applied, but watching the process of their construction happening is fascinating. Richard took me through the many different processes of a carbon spar construction: “We have a rotating aluminium former (mandrel) which is first coated in a releasing agent, and we lay E-glass patches anywhere that we want to cut, drill, or fix to later. “The machine initially lays a 90 degree wrap of carbon tow for integrity, and then uses the wind file to lay further layers at different angles as the designers specify; this could be 45 degrees, 12 degrees etc. Everything is laid under tension, in the same way reinforced concrete is made, so that when it is baked it is as rigid as we need it to be.” The masts are then cured in the autoclave, which is an exceptionally long pressurised oven, and then removed from the mandrel using a hydraulic puller to extract the aluminium tube from the inside of the carbon spar. This is the moment they find out whether the releasing agent has worked! Then the spar is ready for finishing, with either the natural carbon look or painted a colour. All are treated with an ultraviolet inhibitor to prevent UV damage. Carbon head boxes, boom brackets and vang brackets are then moulded on by hand. The team at Seldén can produce some pretty exotic shapes, including custom projects and and specialist reefing booms. Richard talked me through the ‘Y’ boom construction: “The boom is the structural part, wound in the usual way, and then the wings (which enable a good flake when you lower the sail) are non-structural. “The wings are made of foam and glass, built up and shaped, and then everything is faired in and beautifully sprayed in the booth.” So, next time you’re on the water, take a look at who made your mast, boom or spinnaker pole. If any of the spars are carbon and made by Seldén, you now have a better idea of what goes into making them.

In Episode 63 of the Sailing Goat Series, we find ourselves weathered in on Trizonia Island, deep inside the Gulf of Patras, facing some of the wildest wind shifts we’ve ever experienced. We moored with 35 knots of wind, expecting a rough night, but nothing could prepare us for what followed—three straight days of shifting gales. The wind would swing from north to south in minutes, bringing sudden 30–40 knot gusts with each shift. Then came the worst gust yet. A brutal blast of wind ripped our solar panels clean off the rollbar, launching them into the air before they crashed onto the concrete pier and shattered. The screws didn’t loosen—they snapped clean from the force. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and it happened while we were safely docked—not in the middle of an ocean passage, where it could have spelled disaster. 🍃 Moored in Madness: What we thought would be a calm anchorage turned into a lesson in wind management, as conditions flipped violently with no warning, multiple times per day. ⚡ Solar Panel Catastrophe: A rogue gust destroys our solar panels, teaching us the hard way about structural stress and mounting safety. But we’re grateful it happened here—not mid-ocean. 🌬️ Shifting Winds in the Gulf: The Gulf of Patras is notorious for unpredictable winds, but this was something else—catabatic-level blasts from changing directions, testing both our gear and patience. 💡 Silver Lining: We may have lost the panels, but we gained a valuable reminder: test everything before the big passages, and never take sheltered moorings for granted. 💬 Join the Conversation: Ever lost gear to unexpected weather? Where those taught become teachers and favours and good will multiply. 🙏🙏🙏 ################################################### We are currently looking for sponsors to support the making of videos.🎥 📩 Contact us at: impavidussailing@gmail.com The playlists are here: ▶️ https://www.youtube.com/@SVImpavidus/playlists In 2018 we left the UK to sail around the world slowly. After Brexit, a "Pandemic" and major heart surgery we are still sailing, documenting our travels and showing you what we have learned so far. We are hoping to complete our journey, and travel right around the world even if we have had a few setbacks along the way. We will continue at our own pace and that may be fast or slow. We want to be sure not to miss anything and have stories to tell our grandchildren when we are old and grey. We do have a second channel YOUR DRONE TV It is a mix of music from classical to blues, from Opera to Punk all with stunning drone footage.
