Every nook and cranny is filled to the brim with necessary tools, provisions and living essentials. Although there is only about 480 square feet of space including the engine room on Isabella, we manage to make it work. Finally!!! The riser is installed. Steve used special parts, gasket and bolts, ordered from Cummins along with their torque specification recommendations to secure the riser to the engine and muffler. In this episode, we finally get to start rebuilding the hulls of the boat after grinding a lot of the damaged glass out from the bow areas. Osmosis had caused blisters to form along the entire centerlines of both hulls, so it had been excruciating work grinding out all of the damaged areas in the blistering Malaysian heat! SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing through Asia and planning to cross the Indian Ocean!! On a trois jours pour se préparer à passer 21 jours en mer, et tout devient tout de suite très concret. Nourriture, eau, sécurité : une fois partis, il n’y a plus de retour en arrière. Dans cet épisode, on s’attaque à la plus grosse épicerie de notre vie pour huit personnes, avec des choix “mode survie” et des chiffres qui remettent les priorités en place. On fait aussi un tour du bateau côté sécurité : radeau de survie, sac à prendre avec nous, quoi faire si le catamaran se renverse, et les petits tests qu’on veut vérifier avant une longue traversée. EP64 of Sailing Roam is full of surprises! What started as prepping the anchor chain became a complete windlass replacement. Watch Geri and Shawn clean, repair, and upgrade their cruising catamaran in this hands-on refit episode. After nearly 18 months of refit work, it was finally time to tackle one of the last untouched systems on our sailboat refit: the windlass and chain locker, all in preparation for a shiny new anchor chain. In this episode, we dig into inspecting our existing windlass and gypsy to see if they were still serviceable—or if repair, maintenance, or full replacement was unavoidable. What we found was worse than expected, and honestly a little scary: the windlass was in such poor condition that we’re lucky it hadn’t failed on us already. As Shawn wrestled with removing the windlass, we uncovered another major issue hiding in plain sight—a rotten wood bulkhead inside the chain locker. Years of rust, dirt, and debris from the old galvanized anchor chain had turned the chain locker into a filthy, neglected space. Geri took on the big cleanup job, sanding and cleaning the chain locker down to bare surfaces, while Shawn cut out the rotten bulkhead entirely. To make sure this problem never comes back, we replaced the failed wood with Coosa board, a rot-proof composite material ideal for marine environments. We tabbed the Coosa in with fiberglass, creating a strong, permanent structural repair. After the glass work cured, Geri sanded the resin drips, applied epoxy primer, and finished the space with bilge coat paint. The transformation is incredibly satisfying—watching a grimy, rust-stained chain locker become a clean, bright, and beautiful space again. The locker is now fully prepped and ready to receive new anchor chain… just as soon as the new windlass arrives. This episode is a perfect example of refit life: one project leads to another, unexpected problems surface, and in the end the boat is safer, stronger, and better than before. A group of Geriatskis took advantage of fairly good sea conditions to paddle to a reef off the old Whaling station, the Bluff, Durban. Anchored one surfski and tied the others to it and explored the 5-10m deep reef structure. Highlights were a large puffer fish and an even bigger crayfish.

We’re still underway to the Anambas Islands, settling into the rhythm of a long ocean passage — but the weather is starting to change. After days of light winds, small adjustments begin to make a difference. A prop pitch change gives us a little more speed, dolphins appear alongside the boat, music plays, and life onboard finds its flow — kids everywhere, good food, and those quiet moments that make passages feel manageable. But as we get closer to land, the skies begin to darken. Forecasts are showing a developing tropical system — Storm Senyar — and conditions across the region are starting to deteriorate. With worsening weather expected over the Anambas and nightfall approaching, we make the decision not to push on. Instead, we find what shelter we can behind a small island and drop the anchor, choosing caution over distance. This episode captures passage life as it really is — the balance between progress and patience, joy and vigilance, and the constant decisions that come with sailing a family boat offshore. Just after half past eleven at night, I brought Osprey solo into Cherbourg Inner Harbour. This move wasn’t rushed. I’d planned it carefully, spending hours on the dock beforehand, watching traffic patterns, weather windows, and how the harbour actually behaves at night. After a couple of days studying conditions, I shifted the boat from the outer waiting dock into the security of Cherbourg Inner Harbour—a place with a long history as a refuge on the Normandy coast. This year’s weather has been noticeably harsher than usual. I’ve had messages from subscribers reporting damage to boats all along the south coast of the UK, so being here isn’t just convenient, it’s appropriate. Berth One is an honour to be alongside—but doing it alone changes everything. Solo means slow, deliberate, and methodical. Every step has to be thought through. Every failure mode considered in advance. This footage is less about drama and more about process: planning, patience, and respecting the reality of moving a big boat without crew, late at night, in a working harbour. Sometimes the quiet decisions matter most.
