Sailing from Maine to New Hampshire we stopped at Isle of Shoals, approximately 6 miles off the coast. Miles of Maine Island Hiking, Rock scrambling and Shoreline exploring.

Isle of Shoals, consists of 16 islands, the largest being Appledore, Star, Smuttynose, Malaga, White, Seavey, Lunging and Duck.

The most intriguing part ? There was a true Crime Murder on Isle of Shoals Smuttynose Island back on March 6,1873. Two Norwegian immigrants were brutally murdered in cold blood. Maren Hontvet, her sister Karen, and their sister-in-law Anethe—settled into the only occupied home on the island, unaware that by dawn, two of them would be dead.

Shortly after 1 a.m., an intruder slipped inside. Karen was strangled in her bed, Anethe was butchered with an axe, and only Maren managed to escape, barefoot and terrified, into the icy darkness. She hid among the rocks until daylight, clinging to life as her family’s world collapsed. Anita Shreve wrote a 1997 book about the event and in 2000, the film “Weight of Water with Sean Penn, Catherine McCormack, Elizabeth Hurley, and Sarah Polley was released.

To start with following two days of intense competition on the Sea of Marmara, the 24th Bosphorus Cup concluded with the race on the Bosphorus Strait. The busy waterway is closed once a year to allow this impressive contest to take place, and as usual a sumptuous spectacle was laid on for both competitors and spectators. Racing in a 15 knot northerly winds, and starting from Kuruçeşme, the 55 boat fleet contested a looped course that went as far north as Anadolu Hiasari, and the impressive F S M Bridge, and south to Beşiktaş, with the finish line near Beşiktaş. Hugo Cardon on his Figaro 3, Sarth'Atlantique, won the second leg of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec. This young rookie managed to cover the distance in 4 days 2 hours 14 minutes and 29 seconds. He is ahead of Alexis Loison in Groupe Reel, winner of the first leg, and the formidable Charlotte Yven, on Skipper Macif 2023. In the provisional general classification, Alexis Loison strengthens his lead before the third and final leg. The Ocean Race Europe 2025, came to a spectacular close in Montenegro’s Boka Bay with a dramatic coastal showdown that saw French, Paul Me-hat’s Biotherm put the icing on the cake and win again in the final coastal race in style. Team Paprec Arkéa, crossed in second to secure the overall runner-up spot on 40 points, with skipper Yoann Richomme praising his team’s consistency throughout the six-week race. With summery sunshine warming the dock at Lorient La Base, the skippers, exhausted by the two-day frenzy of manoeuvres, congratulated themselves on the diversity of the course in this 48H Azimut. "Fun", "intense", "fantastic", "tortuous", "demanding"... there was certainly no shortage of adjectives to describe the 48 H and its 'Figaro leg' vibes. The pilothouse is impressive with a well thought out layout of displays and controls. There is a Stidd helm chair for operations and seating behind. Powered by twin John Deere 6068TFM50 main engines, the engine room also is fitted with 12kW and 20kW Northern Lights generators for electrical loads and ABT TRAC hydraulic active stabilizers for a smooth ride underway. On deck, her aft cockpit has full enclosures and the widebody deck allows easy access from the cockpit forward along the starboard side. The Portuguese Bridge has storage lockers and a docking station to starboard. The foredeck features a Maxwell windlass. On the boat deck an AB model VST 13ft tender with a 60 HP Yamaha outboard are ready for launch via the Nautical Structures crane. The flybridge has two helm chairs for side-by-side enjoyment underneath a Bimini top and an L shaped settee with cushions and a table. The ride through the water on a Kadey-Krogen 58 is smooth and efficient with ABT active fin stabilizers for comfort and a hydraulic bow thruster for docking convenience. Tapestry had numerous upgrades during the current and previous ownership. Clearly Catalina’s offer a more traditional and solid cruising yacht when comparing to some European options. Think lead keel, shaft drive diesel, raked bow and reverse or sugar scoop stern, and even a swept back lead keel. This is a very comfortable and solid cruiser. The cockpit is practical and familiar with the large electric genoa winches easily reached from the twin helms. The big folding cockpit table still offers clear passage when walking from the open transom to the companionway. The solid dodger was factory fitted and protects the cockpit in all-weather plus includes a link sheet to the custom stainless Bimini. The Bimini houses solar panels, and removable dinghy davits. The interior is beautiful and practical – an elusive blend. The real and solid timber cabinetry combined with lots of natural light makes for a very inviting space. The large ‘L’ shaped galley includes separate fridge and freezer and proper deep sinks plus loads of intelligent storage options. The beautifully varnished saloon table lowers to make an additional double berth. There are three cabins with master forward including private ensuite. The starboard aft double berth is offset to maximize both cabin and bed space. The port aft cabin can either be used as a double, or storage space, plus there is an additional third bunk berth above. Standing rigging was replaced in 2022. ‘Whimaway’ was anti-fouled in July 2025. The in-mast furling main was new in 2020. There is a furling MPS (cruising spinnaker) with neat retractable snubber pole. There is a bow thruster (tunnel, not drop down). Instruments are extensive including auto-pilot, AIS, and two plotters. ‘Whimaway’ offers a very solid and comprehensively specified cruising platform. Equally, she is easy to sail. Das Boot liegt in East Cowes, der Kurs und die letzten Checks laufen. Sein Weg ins Segeln begann erst während Corona: Ein Dachbodenfund – Wilfried Erdmanns „Allein gegen den Wind“ – zündete den Funken. Kurz darauf kaufte er eine Hurley 18 (Langkieler, Baujahr 1970) und startete alleine via Sizilien, Sardinien, Spanien bis Gibraltar. Von Lanzarote segelte er in ~29 Tagen nach Antigua – „perfekte Passatwinde, fast nichts kaputt“ – und brachte das Boot später aus purer Sehnsucht wieder nach Europa zurück. Heute segelt Nicolas eine Class 40 (2007, „Cheeky Tattoo“) – ein frühes, kompromisslos sportliches Design mit minimalem Komfort. 2024 setzte er bei der Round-Iceland-Challenge eine Referenzzeit single-handed: geplanter „Zwei-Wochen-Traum“, am Ende 16 Tage – nach harter Am-Wind-Passage mit Böen über 50 Knoten, später traumhaften Bedingungen entlang Islands Südküste und schließlich zwei Downwind-Tagen mit ~11 Knoten Schnitt zurück Richtung Irland. Angst gilt dem Material, nicht dem Wetter: Die größten Kräfte wirken auf Rumpf und Rigg – Seamanship bedeutet für ihn, so vorzubereiten, dass Ausfälle möglichst selten werden. Prägend ist auch ein schwerer Slackline-Unfall (2015), bei dem Nicolas sein linkes Auge verlor. Statt ihn zu bremsen, schärfte das Erlebnis seinen Fokus: Träume nicht aufschieben, Verantwortung übernehmen, Risiken bewusst managen. Das große Ziel: Worldstar 2026 – solo, nonstop um die Welt. Start in Plymouth, dann Atlantik südwärts über den Äquator, hinein ins Südpolarmeer, unter Kap der Guten Hoffnung, durch den Indischen Ozean, südlich an Neuseeland vorbei, durch den Südpazifik und unter Kap Hoorn zurück in den Atlantik – alle drei großen Kaps an Backbord lassen.
