We’re kicking off Season 5 in the Dominican Republic. After getting the boat cleaned up and ourselves sorted, we take a trip across the island with Chris and Danielle to see a bit more of what life looks like here. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, we’ve made it to the Dominican Republic and are finally getting a chance to clean up the boat and ourselves after the trip down. Once things are under control, we head across the island with Chris and Danielle. We spend some time in Santo Domingo, check out the Los Tres Ojos cave system, and then make our way down to Bayahibe, where we end up at a resort bar on the water and find some really good Asian food. Getting around wasn’t exactly smooth. The driving, the roads, and the rental car all had their moments. This episode follows our sailing journey into the Dominican Republic, including life aboard, island travel, visiting Santo Domingo, exploring Los Tres Ojos National Park, and time in Bayahibe. -------------------- Chris Does What With Danielle https://www.youtube.com/chrisdoeswhat -------------------- 🌊 Sailing Dark Angel follows our real-life journey sailing the Caribbean aboard our Island Spirit catamaran, sharing the challenges, adventures, and everyday moments of liveaboard sailing life. -------------------- 🎥 Become part of the Crew on Patreon Without a Crew, a Ship Has No Direction. Today we’re stepping aboard the Sirena 88, a yacht that really blends explorer capability with modern comfort in a way that just works. The first thing you notice is the volume and layout. The salon feels open and bright, the outdoor areas are generous, and everything is designed for spending real time onboard — not just quick trips. Some of my favorite features? The huge flybridge, the seamless indoor–outdoor flow, and the overall comfort throughout the yacht. It feels like a proper cruising home, not just a weekend boat. The PERFECT Marex!? | Marex 390 | Full Walkthrough | The Marine Channel In this video, we take a closer look at the Marex 390, a Scandinavian family cruiser that encompasses all of the best parts of Marex design. Intended to deliver practicality, usability, and comfort in a manageable 12-metre package. We begin on deck, where the layout focuses on smart, real-world usability. The cockpit and aft deck are designed as proper living spaces rather than just transitional areas, with clever storage solutions and flexible seating throughout. Wide side decks and easy access around the boat make it well-suited to owner-operators and short-handed cruising. Underneath, the Marex 390 features a refined variable-V hull, designed to balance efficiency, stability, and performance. With top speeds of around 30 knots and predictable low-speed handling—helped by joystick controls and optional thrusters—the boat is built to be both enjoyable underway and easy to manage in tight spaces. Heading inside, the focus remains on practicality and comfort. The saloon connects seamlessly with the cockpit, creating a versatile indoor-outdoor space, while below deck, the two-cabin layout makes full use of the available volume. Throughout the boat, the emphasis is on thoughtful design details, owner feedback, and everyday usability rather than unnecessary complexity. To learn more about Keane Insurance and to seek your bespoke boat policy check them out here - https://keanespecialty.com/get-a-quote?pid=YSN After months of planning, stressing, and a whole lot of waiting, the stars finally decided to cooperate. With glassy conditions, barely a breath of wind, and a rare empty dock waiting for us, We carefully tugboat Nandji 2 out of her pen and made our way across the marina. Once alongside, it was time to say goodbye to the old seized engine that has been living in our cockpit for months, and believe it or not, we weren’t too sad to see it go. With the Seascape Marine crew on hand and ole trusty Fossil the crane swinging into action, before we knew it, a brand-new Yanmar 4JH110 was hovering above the cockpit. This a serious bit of kit, and a massive upgrade for Nandji 2. Once everything is fully installed, the reliability, the safety and the confidence this bigger engine will bring to our cruising plans for years to come is exactly what we have been working towards this whole time. On September 14th, 1914, RMS Carmania, recently converted into an armed merchant cruiser made a strange discovery in the South Atlantic-- another armed merchant cruiser disguised to look exactly like her. It was the German SMS Cap Trafalgar, which had also been converted into a war ship and disguised to trick allied ships. The encounter set off one of the strangest naval battles in history. A fight to the death between two luxury liners. Built in 2022, she offers 496 GT of internal volume, accommodation for 12 guests in 6 staterooms, and a layout that feels beautifully balanced between owner enjoyment, guest comfort and practical crew operation. Her exterior design comes from Francesco Paszkowski, with interiors by Margherita Casprini, and throughout the yacht there is a strong sense that every area has been carefully considered. In this walkthrough, we take a close look at what makes KINDA stand out. From the generous foredeck lounge and pool, to the superb aft deck, fold-down beach club, gym setup and highly usable guest areas, this is a yacht that seems to have been designed by somebody who really understands how life is lived on board. There are also some lovely details throughout, including the use of glass instead of traditional railings in key areas, hidden storage solutions, and a main deck arrangement that gives both the owner and guests an exceptional amount of comfort. What really sets KINDA apart, though, is her technical side. She has a hybrid propulsion system with diesel, diesel-electric and full electric modes, giving the yacht added flexibility, greater efficiency and quieter operation. With a cruising speed of 12 knots, a top speed of 17 knots, and a range of 4,400 nautical miles, she is not just a beautiful yacht to look at, but a very capable one too. There’s a moment in every build where the project stops being a collection of parts and becomes a boat. This is that moment. In this video, I carefully release my strip-planked Little Auk 11 from the mold, revealing the true shape that’s been hiding in plain sight all along. After hours of shaping, fairing, and fitting each cedar strip, the hull finally stands on its own light, strong, and full of character. You’ll see the techniques I use to safely separate the hull from the forms without damaging the delicate structure, along with a close look at the craftsmanship that goes into a small wooden kayak like this. It’s a satisfying and slightly nerve wracking step, but one that never gets old. If you love wooden boats, traditional craftsmanship, or just the quiet beauty of building something by hand, this is a moment you won’t want to miss. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. Inside Sail America’s Plan to Grow the Sport and the Industry: https://www.practical-sailor.com/subscriber-only/inside-sail-americas-plan-to-grow-the-sport-and-the-industry/ Lightning striking a sailboat sounds like something out of a disaster movie—but what actually happen when it does? In this episode, we break down what really happens when lightning hits a sailboat, how the electrical energy travels through the mast and rigging, and why some boats survive with minor damage while others suffer catastrophic failures. We’ll look at the physics behind lightning strikes, how the current tries to reach the water, and why poor grounding systems can lead to blown hulls, destroyed electronics, or even boats sinking at the dock. Using real-world examples from marine surveys, insurance reports, and sailing publications, we explain how lightning travels through a sailboat’s structure, what components usually fail first, and why modern boats packed with electronics are especially vulnerable. We’ll also cover the most effective ways sailors can reduce lightning damage, including proper mast grounding, bonding systems, keel grounding paths, and practical storm precautions that experienced cruisers use. If you’ve ever wondered whether your mast really acts like a lightning rod—or what happens if lightning actually hits your boat—this video explains the science and the real-world consequences. Topics covered: • What happens when lightning hits a sailboat • How lightning travels through a mast and rigging • Why boat electronics are often destroyed by lightning strikes • Real lightning strike damage to sailboats • Mast grounding and lightning protection systems • How to reduce lightning damage on your boat Whether you’re a coastal sailor, cruiser, or liveaboard, understanding lightning risk and protection can help you better prepare your boat for offshore storms. #Sailing #SailboatMaintenance #BoatElectrical #LightningStrike #PracticalSailor #BoatOwnership #CruisingSailboat Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/
In this video, we seize a rare 3-day weather window to sail east to the Tuamotus, planning a three-night passage. We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures! HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT US? If you wish to support our video efforts, all we ask is that you SUBSCRIBE, give a THUMBS UP, SHARE our videos with your friends, AND COMMENT! WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET TO KNOW US MORE DEEPLY? Day in the Life with Erwan & Clément 🇫🇷⛵️ Ahead of the first World Cup of the season in Palma de Mallorca, we take you behind the scenes with the French 49er World Champs for a full day of training, competition, and a bit of fun along the way. The day kicks off with a relaxed breakfast at the hotel alongside the rest of the French 49er squad—fueling up before a big day ahead. But it’s not straight to the water just yet… first stop: the golf course ⛳️ A friendly (and slightly competitive) round with teammates and the coach sets the tone. After that, it’s time to switch gears. A quick sandwich at the boat park to recharge, then straight into prep mode, rigging, tuning, and getting everything dialed in. Out on the water, things get serious. Intense training sessions focused on testing new equipment and sharpening boat handling skills as they prepare for the upcoming racing. Back ashore, it’s time for a debrief, breaking down the session, fine-tuning details, and planning the next steps. But the day’s not over yet… a bit of paddel to unwind 🎾 followed by a well-earned dinner at an Indian restaurant to wrap it all up. From early fuel-ups to late-night laughs, this is what it takes behind the scenes. 🎥 Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more inside access to life on the 49er circuit!
