That evening we shared one final night onboard the catamaran, cooking dinner, watching the sunset, and reflecting on an unforgettable trip before returning the boat to the charter base. Jinnie is an old oyster skiff we’re restoring with the hope of getting her back where she belongs: on the water. In this episode, Alan walks us through the condition of Jinnie’s original keel, revealing years of wear, damage, and hard use. We document the challenging process of dropping and removing the keel from the rest of the boat, and Alan explains exactly what a keel is, why it’s so critical to a vessel’s structure, and what happens when it fails. With the old keel badly worn, accurate measurements became a real struggle—but those measurements are essential. The new keel must be perfectly sized to fit the boat, and even small errors could cause major problems. Alan also shares insights into the wood selection for the new keel and the traditional methods he and the apprentices will use to build it. With the water maker install complete and jobs out of the way, it is time to kick back and enjoy ourselves. We have three other buddy boats anchored with us and we swim, the kids jump off the boat for the first time and venture into old town again and see more charm than what we initially did. Much to the family's dissapointment I am making them do the 'Ladder of Kotor' - a 2hr return hike, with an elevation of approx 250m and is roughly 4km long, or 1,400 steps high. The views were incredible and everybody enjoyed doing it, and very miuch looking forward to a swim after. We stock up on some fresh food then move on to a quieter anchorage. This simple shop made bevel is quick to build. In this video, I show how to make a traditional boatbuilder’s bevel an essential hand tool used to transfer angles accurately when shaping frames, planks, and other curved components of a wooden boat. The small size of this brass bevel is highly accurate, and perfectly suited to boatbuilding work from pulling angles from plans and a lofting floor. I walk through the materials, layout, and construction process, along with tips on how and when to use it in real-world boatbuilding.
