Rich captured this incredible moment with the same juvenile whale we both swam with. Watch how he glides in slow and graceful, rolls his body, and even gives a little wave with his pectoral fin. Then suddenly… BOOM — one powerful tail swipe sends a huge cloud of bubbles over Rich! He had to swim off to the left just to see again. At one point, Rich even dives down deeper — and the whale song becomes loud, haunting, and absolutely beautiful. It’s one of those rare moments you feel in your chest. If you look closely, you’ll spot two more humpback whales cruising in the background, keeping their distance but totally aware of what’s happening. This young whale was playful, curious, and full of personality — encounters like this are once-in-a-lifetime. The place is full of untold stories and a quiet charm that time seems to have forgotten. We hiked both Outer Newry and Newry Islands, each with its own character and beauty, then tried our luck crabbingagain — and finally had success! 🦀 Three in total this time! Hunting and gathering life isn’t easy, but it sure is rewarding. We also explored Mausoleum and Rocky Islands — both absolutely stunning and surprisingly untouched for somewhere so close to the coast. Most people just pass them by, but trust me, they’re worth the stop. To wrap up the week, we tucked into Rabbit Island to hide from the northerly winds and enjoy some calm days in nature. Before we left North Queensland on the long trek home, we took the chance to head out to the Great Barrier Reef to visit stunning Arlington Reef and Upolu Reef, just off Cairns. At Arlington, we had our very own private lagoon – the clearest, most incredible blue water you’ve ever seen. Jason speared his first-ever Coral Trout while we snorkelled among vibrant coral gardens. Sadly, my underwater camera decided to take its job description a bit too seriously. It’s now completely full of water and has officially retired from filming – though it still looks the part. So at Upolu, when we spotted our first-ever clownfish in the wild, you’ll just have to take our word for it! Both reefs were breathtaking, and we feel so fortunate to have explored this spectacular part of Queensland before beginning our 820nm sail home. What an adventure it’s been! Thanks for watching. “Moments in Time” radar reflectors had slide down during a rough passage in the Chesapeake Chop. Unfortunately, the reflectors are now even with our radar, thus creating huge blind spots to port and starboard. This required another trip up the mast to correct but this time I wanted to test my new safety backup. While the Admiral still raised and lowered me using the main halyard, I was able to use my backup tether to the screecher halyard and control my backup line myself. This week aboard Chasing Serenity we hit a huge milestone—1,000 miles traveled on our 50-foot Royal Cape catamaran as we sail from Charleston, SC to St. Augustine, FL. Along the way we’re joined by dolphins day and night. We also get our damaged sail prepped to bring to the sail loft for repair, and I fix the alignment on one of our batten cars and a batten that’s been giving us trouble. For homeschool science, the kids help catch a few jellyfish to study onboard.
