Why should you watch this video when it’s so easy to click the plotter and find out the height of tide? There’s plenty of propaganda out there to convince us that this is all we need. Sadly, when the chips are down and we want an accurate prediction, it isn’t. Ask four plotters and you’ll probably get four answers, so when it really matters I turn to the old system of graphs and top-quality predictions. Students of navigation still have to make these calculations. They aren’t difficult and in this and my next video I explain how it all works. Giving an old boat new life is not only ecologically sound, it’s also immensely satisfying. Genoa sheet leads are critical to the performance of a roller-reefed sail. Certain quality cruisers have inbuilt tackles to set the leads where you want them, and a good thing too. For the rest of us, some other system is needed if we aren’t to have a headsail that looks like a flour-bag and drags us over rather driving us ahead. The steering compass should be the most accurate traditional instrument on board, but it can be affected by magnetic influences within the boat herself. Swinging the compass to determine what these are, and so to compensate for them, is a vital part of responsible seafaring that’s often overlooked in today’s electronic world. The bowline! Probably the most important single tool of the sailor. As a long-term instructor I’m here to tell you that it’s among the more challenging items to teach – if you’re tying it like a sailor, that is.
