LAHAKAI SAILING // ⛵️ S1 Ep44 // Our sailboat restoration project continues as we come up with more small sailboat interior design ideas. This time we are building a DIY boat stove gimbal for our single burner INDUCTION cooktop as part of our boat conversion to home. Our goal is to build a fully electric boat for sailing around the world and eliminating dependency on gas, propane or alcohol stoves is the first step. We might have a backup option just in case but for now we are going all solar and wind powered to be the ultimate off grid home. =========================== ➡️ WEEKLY VIDEOS EVERY SUNDAY AT 10AM (EST) =========================== ◤ BE A PART OF THE JOURNEY ◥ JOIN OUR CREW: Watch Ad free videos, Real-time updates, Exclusive clips and vlogs of our project and plans: https://www.patreon.com/lahakai SEND LOVE: https://lahakai.com/PayPal.html ============================= ◤ GET MORE ◥ ﹏ INSTAGRAM: https://lahakai.com/instagram.html ﹏ FACEBOOK: https://lahakai.com/facebook.html ﹏ WEBSITE: https://lahakai.com ﹏ BLOG: https://www.lahakai.com/blog ============================= All our music is licensed from ARTLIST.Get 2 FREE months using this link: https://artlist.io/Luc-3265547 Subscribe animation https://www.vecteezy.com/members/motionbirdstudio =============================

We are back! we had a break from making videos over the winter as winter is miserable on a boat but we did make progress and we did film it so this is the third in a series of videos to catch up with what you missed before we set sail again. In this episode we show you some great purchases we made, and some terrible ones. We also get on with fixing the hydraulic pipe that burst. We had anticipated that getting that fixed by someone else would be thousands so we opted for the diy approach and with the help of our lovely boat neighbour Matt we replaced the two main pipes plus all the fittings and oil for less that £300. We also upgraded our alternator with the help of another neighbour called Frank, however Hugh almost blew it up when he made as slight error on installation. We are a family of five with plans for an epic adventure, sailing around the world. We have bought a boat we have to gut it, rebuild it, sell all of our possessions and have the guts to cast off. Follow our adventures. Leave us a comment, watch our other videos, join our Facebook page, become part of our journey. https://www.facebook.com/fivegosailing https://www.instagram.com/fivegosailing

What did we get up to in Bristol, Rhode Island? A bit of electrical work, some solar panel installation, sorting out rigging details so we can get to sailing this sailboat, and making a mockup of the hard dodger. Scott, KP, and Satchel are doing all this work from the mooring in Bristol, which on some days, with the prevailing southwesterlies, can be a pretty "sporty" place in the summer time. We've since sailed on to the next place, and we are now doing real-time updates on Instagram and Facebook if you want to catch where we are and take a photo from shore. We don't have public events scheduled at this time, but we might in future! Get our newsletter to be in the know when we do get something on the calendar. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Refinements to the highly respected and well proven Cape Islander concept were few - a clean continuous sheer, subtle tumblehome, a lengthened hull to give not only a swim platform for easy boarding but to increase this full displacement hull’s waterline length and so too her speed. The layout and detailing of the accommodations reflect years of live-aboard cruising experience combined with a career of building custom cruising yachts - everything is where it should be, the boat is clean, open and bright throughout. Set up and equipped to be safely handled by a couple and comfortably cruise wherever you choose.... and the dinette lowers to create a second double berth. Four watertight bulkheads assure maximum safety. In the engine room you will find just that : an engine and room. High performance lead / fiberglass sound insulation, soft engine mounts and a flexible coupling keep the engine’s noise out of the accommodations. The systems compartment is designed to ensure all operating systems are easily accessible. No exterior wood ensures ease of maintenance, while the wood inside makes the interior. The standard cockpit arrangement includes a half open stern to make dinghy storage a simple, quick and easy job. This arrangement works for fishing, swimming, socializing, dining and sleeping under the stars. A draft of just over 3 feet allows for near shore exploring, a fine entry and beam to length ratio of 1:3 assures offshore comfort, even in rough seas. LINK TO SAILRITE BOX CUSHION TUTORIAL: https://www.sailrite.com/How-To-Make-a-Quick-and-Easy-Box-Cushion-Video In this video, we discuss the reasons that we wanted to redesign the seatbacks for our saloon upholstery and we also describe the details of how we created the removable box cushions for our seatbacks. I won't say that we couldn't have done this project without the helpful information provided free of charge by Sailrite, but I'd be lying if I said that their tutorials were anything other than HUGELY helpful. I really can't say enough positive things about Sailrite - except, maybe, that they don't have any easy shipping options to Canada. (Maybe I'll make a video about how we navigate getting things across the border legally; let me know if you're interested). Anyway, the link to Sailrite's tutorial page is listed right at the top of this description box. Check them out if you have any similar DIY projects. We don't have any cockpit cushions onboard Intention (*yet*), so we really wanted to have these seatback cushions double as sitting cushions that could be used on deck or in the cockpit. We didn't buy water-shedding reticulated foam for them because they're not intended to be left out in wet conditions, but it's nice to know that we have some extra soft things to sit on when the weather is nice. We LOVE the way the upholstery turned out and think that the new design for the removable box cushions on the seat backs make the saloon much more versatile. Let us know what other projects you'd like to see. We'd love to hear your comments!

Light boats are fast boats - World Sailing It seems every where you in the YouTube world you look sailing channels are building, buying, testing and talking about performance yachts. And who wouldn't want to get from A to B in their sailing catamaran in the quickest time possible? When Rob rowed across the Atlantic Ocean in a 7 meter plywood boat they had one motto, "Light boats are fast boats" they didn't take anything aboard that didn't serve a purpose. So it may come as no surprise that our eldest son Finn is rowing and competing in the fast, sleek and very light, lightweight category while overseas in Europe this year but today he has trials to find out 1, Can he get down to the extremely light weigh in weight of 70kg and 2, Can he still perform at that weight. As we splash back into the water our sail drives rebuild complete our thoughts are with Finn and his rowing trial. Will his light boat be a fast boat? Like love the road to success does not run smooth. Thank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #sailing #fastboat #boatlife #TheCruisingKiwis #214

Mads makes a tent to cover the foredeck and fixes a leak from the watermaker. 🐼 Fischer Panda update: This video was shot four weeks ago. We still don't have a working genset, but there is hope. Fischer Panda sent the part they believe is broken to a local service partner, so now it's just a matter of getting him to swing by the boat and swap it. Hopefully, that fixes the issue so we can start using the genset again! *** Links *** Sail Life website: https://www.saillifechannel.com/ Sail Life on Patreon: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnPatreon Sail Life on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/saillife_/ Sail Life on Facebook: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnFacebook Sail Life on Twitter: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnTwitter

Splash Day looms as refit nears completion - sailing Malaysia It is with boat work on our mind that we welcome back once more to Rebak Marina, Malaysia, where the maintenance continues. Our sailing catamaran is hauled out, sail drives removed, seals and diaphragms replace, and all boat work that can be carried out completed. Unfortunately other work has been delayed due to two very allusive small bell housing oil seals that Rob has had to source during his visit home to New Zealand. Now he has returned to our live aboard boat to meet our cute little kitten Milo who is determined to win him over with the force of her charm. Step 1: From Ameland to Vlieland: the W of Willem Distance sailed: 40 miles Wind: N-NW, 6-11 kts Weather: ☀️ 24 degrees Engine hours: 5 After (unfortunately) some more work for Patty, we set sail at high tide at 10.30am. Robin and Gaffel did some final shopping. So we sail out with the current and can take the short route this time because of the high tide. It's a lovely sail, unfortunately because of the sails we don't do much yet. At Ameland, we want to sail a little further out to the 10-metre line, so that we then have a nice sailed high-wind course to Vlie. The depth on the (very recently updated) navionics indicates that we have between 8 and later 4 metres of water under the keel (with low tide and it is not). However..... Patty reports that the depth gauge indicates some 3.5-4 metres less than on the chart. We are not amused. We had put out the keel a bit and we pull it back in. Eventually the depth gauge diverges further and then the shallowest is yet to come. We decide not to risk it and learn to turn around. Back, around the shallows that do show on the chart and an hour later we are back to square one 🫣😜. Anyway. 'Tis nice weather and we are in no hurry. The rest of the trip is top-notch. Aft current on the sail to Vlie, sunshine, low waves and with current also around 18.00 the ‘path’ through to Vlie. We put the WJ at anchor and what an amazing spot and tranquillity. A real treat. A quick dinghy ride to shore for Gaffer and then chicken with salad. Top day Step 2: From salt to sweet Weather: partly cloudy Wind: SW 12 kts Distance: 22 miles Bunkered: 300 litres We raise anchor at 7.00 and sail away from Vlieland with a nice current with us, our destination being Franeker. We want to go in for a bit as the wind will be quite strong for 2 days and we would like to be on a quiet and peaceful silent island in the Alde Faenen near Grou. Since tomorrow also looks like a rainy day, this sounds like a nice place to sail on to after Franeker. Besides, Franeker is cute and we can replenish some supplies there. We can pass through the narrow lock at Harlingen immediately, bunker some diesel again afterwards and are in Franeker by lunchtime. There we do a tour, drink a cup of coffee (the first drizzle reports) and come across an electric folding bike on offer. We buy it...although picking it up is a bit of a hassle, as they broke a cable at the maintenance/enrichment service and now the bike has to be sent away. Anyway.... An otherwise lovely quiet day and a lovely quiet evening. Step 3: Continuing with island hopping Weather: Rain and very occasionally dry Distance: 17 miles Engine hours: 5/6 We leave Franeker at 10.30 am after getting fresh bread and soon the rain falls mega enthusiastically on Robin's lovely new Musto suit 😏🙃🫣. Patty gets to work inside on household chores (mentally assisted by Gaffer) and makes a new YouTube video va the past few days. We keep in touch with Angelique and Bert as they will also be around for the weekend. Who knows, maybe we can meet up. We are heading for an island in the Alde Faenen. After all, our theme has now become island hopping this holiday. The Marrekrite islands are so beautiful and quiet. That does appeal to us for the next 2 days of bad weather and strong winds. We moor at 15.00 and after walking around the island with Gaffel, we take it easy. #Ameland #aldefeanen #Vlieland
For almost nine years, we've made videos documenting our sail around the world. Having you along with us for the adventures, the challenges and all the MANY things we've learned made the journey infinitely more meaningful. But all good things come to an end. So with heavy hearts, we're announcing that this is the end of the Out Chasing Stars YouTube channel. It takes an immense amount of time and effort to produce these videos. More and more, we found ourselves wanting to devote that time to other projects. Something had to give. We're not done yet with a life on the water. We still have a passion for exploring this beautiful world and meeting so many incredible people. Keep an eye out for Starry Horizons and be sure to stop in and say hi! For more info about our electric outboard from ePropulsion, visit here: https://www.epropulsion.com/spirit-evo/ From Mattpoisett to Mystic to Bristol, we go from boat show to a short-term home base, take many visitors on board, and motor along to new horizons... just around the corner. We still see people we know wherever we go, though, getting some big hellos from boats passing by. As far as projects are concerned, we fire up the water maker, which is a high-pressure, reverse-osmosis system that desalinates sea water. Since it's removing dissolved salts, yes it does indeed remove bacteria and viruses as well, which are larger than salts. Satchel does some good explanations on how to start a water maker for the first time. TDS stands for total dissolved solids. What's the power draw on the 12 V electrical system? How much water can this water maker put out? The last few minutes are a nature show. This is what what a yacht manager does, not specifically a Yacht Manager from Power To Sail, but a typical Yacht management company. Yacht Management is a complex and demanding field. Yacht managers are responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of a yacht, from ensuring that it is seaworthy to providing a luxurious and safe experience for the owner and guests. A Yacht Manager manages so the owner does not have to, and it is not left to the captain or other manager who may not have the depth of experience needed to do it effectively. A Yacht Management company relies on a team, because only a team can have the depth of knowledge and experience to manage a yacht effectively. The specific duties of a yacht manager can vary depending on the size and type of yacht, as well as the owner's preferences. However, some of the most common tasks that yacht managers perform include, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the yacht. This includes tasks such as scheduling maintenance, provisioning the yacht with food and supplies, and managing the crew. Yacht Management companies typically manage the yacht's finances. This includes tracking expenses, preparing budgets, and paying bills. We work in an increasingly regulated marketplace and the Yacht Manager should ensure that the yacht complies with all relevant regulations. This includes safety, environmental, employment and immigration regulations. A Yacht Manager should be able to have one of the staff Technical Managers to help negotiate and oversee any prolonged yard periods or technical refits. These days relying on the limited expertise from project managers working with the sole interests of the shipyards or the limited experience that most crew members have, could seriously damage your wealth. A good yacht manager will have experience or at least will have a good idea as to the cost of most technical interventions; because this is what he or she does on a day-to-day basis, and they will have colleagues to discuss projects with. They will know the shipyards to get a quote from and those to avoid. Operating a yacht, of even a modest size requires budgeting and a strategy to maintain its reliability and its apparent value. A documented record of works can certainly help that.

#catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailing June 5, 2023 – #CapeLookout Bight, part of #ShacklefordBanks #OuterBanks #HarkersIsland We anchored and stayed in Cape Lookout Bight for the week. Partly to enjoy the area and to wait for the weather window for the trip around Cape Hatteras, The Outer Banks of NC and into Chesapeake Bay. The weather was great, but the wind would not be in our favor until Monday, June 11. Cape Lookout bight is a unique and remote area. The Bight is a pond-like inlet in a break in Shackleford Banks. A hurricane made the break in Shackleford banks where the tidal waters go through from the Beaufort side to the bay side where Harker’s Island stands. The beaches are some of the most beautiful I have seen. The Cape boast a beautiful lighthouse built in 1859. At 163 feet the Fresnel lens of this light house could project 18 miles out to sea warning mariners of the treacherous shoals of Cape Lookout. It was closed until 2024 while we visited. The tip of Cape Lookout, past the Bight, can be accessed by ferry from Harker’s Island and Beaufort. Cars and Campers can be ferried to the Cape where people enjoy the beaches, fishing, camping and the remote atmosphere of the unique Cape. We walked to the tip of the Cape - 7 miles! Beautiful ocean waves, beaches and shells were a highlight on the walk. There’s a long section where cars and camper are not permitted, and we saw no other people on our walk. Repairs and Maintenance – I got the water maker de-pickled and working. We successfully made water and the unit runs fine. But it wasn’t long till the filters were contaminated and needed replacement. I have replaced them and will await clean blue water before we make water again. Next week we’ll sail from Cape Lookout around Hatteras to the Chesapeake Bay. Love affair on private tropical Island - Sailing Asia Sailing is on hold as we find ourselves back at private island resort and Marina Rebak where we have hauled out our sailing Catamaran Javelot for boat repairs. Although last we lost two crew members, Darragh to Australia and Rob to New Zealand but in their absence we have gained our cutest and most enchanting crew member yet, and everyone is in love with her. Her name is Milo and she is a stray kitten, rescued by Chanelle and Declan from the middle of the road. We catch up with Rob and Finn in NZ and find out what it takes to be selected as the best lightweight rower in the land and also celebrate another birthday, this time our sailing teen Ivan celebrating turning sweet sixteen. What better way to mark the occasion than a food shopping trip with your Mum! Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis

Episode 036 Since becoming full time liveaboards on our sail boat, Adam has always planned for us to be practising something so that should the time come for us to need to do something, then we know how to do it rather than feeling anxious and unsure of what to do. These sessions can range from learning how to hove to, to jibing, to using our hydrovane, to testing our storm sailing. The list goes on. Well it may not always sound like fun, he has a point and so over the summer we will be doing more of these sessions so that we both feel confident and secure in what we need to do, should we need to. We'll film these practice sessions and we've decided to call them Skipper's boot camp. If you like this idea and would like to see more of these videos then please let us know in the comments. We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel #trysail
What is the best helm position on a catamaran? We explore this and build a spreadsheet that will help you discover what you think is the best. Meanwhile, we are hard at work on our Performance/Cruising Catamaran, a 50 Schionning Solitaire 1520, which we collaborated on the design. We're trying to get the port canoe, forebeam, and bulkheads all ready for lamination. Once we complete our DIY sailboat, we'll set sail on S/V Lynx and take our boat around the world on a double circumnavigation!
