Episode 039 During the winter months in New Zealand, we take the opportunity to travel and complete any fieldwork Adam has to do whilst Tāiko is safely secured in the marina. From July 2023 to September, we had done a total of 6,000 km and that is not counting the travel we did from April. It's been a busy year for us. However, we love having the opportunity to see many places in New Zealand and Adam's work takes us to some remote places which is even more special. Last year we travelled up the East Coast of the North Island but never showed you. Having to travel around the East Coast for work, we take the opportunity to show you just how beautiful the East Coast is driving from Napier to Whakatāne. It’s been 6 months since Cyclone Gabrielle caused widespread devastation to this area and there’s a lot of hard work being done to clean up the damage. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In this episode, we anchor Our Dreamtime off the northern tip of Cape York to go ashore and stand on the very top of mainland Australia. Every year thousands of eager off-roaders make the pilgrimage up the Cape in four wheel drives to ‘Tick the box’ with a photo beside the iconic sign at the top of Australia but very, very few people reach this remote spot under sail. Arriving by boat rather than on wheels gave us a nice sense of achievement and marked an important moment for us on our journey to Indonesia. Next it was on to our anchorage at Horn Island in the Torres Strait to make final preparations for the coming five to six day passage across the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arafura Sea north to the Kai Kecil islands in Indonesia. With a number of crocodiles making their presence around the boat very obvious we were relieved no under the waterline repairs or maintenance were required this time. Naturally, we also took the time to explore both Horn and Thursday Islands and the major role the area played in the defence of Australia in World War Two. Fishcake got sold while i was away at work (far away) and i just had to get this boat. We agreed on a price after i asked a ton of questions and i went for it. For me, this boat is perfect and i'm just in love! After we saw some bad weather coming our way, we sailed to a more protected atoll and Brioni got to work to make a rain enclosure for our cockpit to replace the old one that came on the boat when we bought it. The storms arrive just after we dropped our stern anchor and our dinghy bridle snaps at 6am. THANKSGIVING TRAGEDY - Sailing family save son from freedive DROWNING at remote island With all forms of diving there are inescapable risks, unfortunately, on this occasion the thrill of the challenge may have clouded our vision. While sailing our liveaboard sailboat through the beautiful, tropical, south Thailand islands, we encounter a near fatal free diving accident. Our son Finn experienced a deep water blackout, or in layman's terms passed out underwater while surfacing from a 30m, 100ft free dive with no fins. Luckily is father had been keeping an eye on him, spotted him unconscious seven metres below the surface and, together with Finn's brothers, worked as a family to drag Finn back to safety, where they applied CPR until Finn regained consciousness. However, that was only the beginning of this freediving nightmare. In search of clear blue water for free diving and some windy days for kite surfing we instead discovered perished kite bladders and the inside of a hospital room. Freediving is a form of underwater diving that relies on breath holding until resurfacing rather than using breathing apparatus such as scuba diving. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Episode 038 In May 2023, Adam had the opportunity to help with a yacht relocation from Hobart, Tasmania to Fiji. It was a 13.5 days trip and a total of 2,500 nautical miles. This was his second ocean crossing and Adam now has 5,000 nautical miles of ocean sailing under his belt. During the trip, he experienced all types of weather from rough weather in the Southern Ocean to trade wind sailing in the tropics. Bass Strait lived up to its reputation, taking 24 hours to cross, and delivering 35 knots of prevailing winds, gusts in the 40 knot range, and big seas. Needless to say, he thoroughly enjoyed himself, was so grateful for the experience, and continues to love the freedom ocean sailing brings. Unfortunately, the GoPro Adam was using to film this amazing passage stopped working and the SD card corrupted. He didn't take his computer or hard drives to save the footage so it's a valuable lesson we, as have other vloggers, learned. To say he was gutted about losing all his footage is an understatement. He had footage of whales, various sailing conditions, the huge Southern Ocean swell that were several meters high, and their welcome arrival into Fiji. We sent it away to experts to see if it could be salvaged but there was no luck this time. Fortunately, he did do some filming on his phone and so there is a bit of footage to share with you of his sail from Hobart to Eden in mainland Australia. We hope you enjoy it! From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore.
