After Cruising for a few years, the 5 basic budget friendly things we would not want to go sailing without. We have tried to keep this list to the cheapest items that give the best use of money for shoe string sailors. Let us know what would be on your list in the comments.
A short video on looking after a teak deck and what should be done in our opinion, vs what we see all too often. I don't think I have been in many marinas recently where I haven't seen somebody pressure washing a teak deck, and on a close passing, you can see that rebrightened teak. But you can see how soft and torn and damaged it has become. Is it bad to just McCartney it an 'let it be?' My personal feeling is- just go sailing and let the ocean wash it. Then a little maintenance once in a while. What do you guys thing? Hit like and subscribe if you enjoyed and want more content like this. A thought of the day - prompted by a couple of videos I have watched on docking recently, suggesting the reason for using an eye on a dockline it to prevent chafe. What do you guys thing? Is once around the dock cleat and back onboard an acceptable way of tying up a boat?
A guide to why working on a boat is sometimes difficult. Visual representation of an average day.
A mini problem for the day, over the thousands of miles, we have slowly had this footplate degrade, glue dry out and ultimately most the wooden slats have lived in a drawer for a few months now. Time to fix it.
A short video on a small detail to finish off our 2 to 1 halyard setup on our old cutter rigged sailboat. Not everything has to cost a lot of money. This seemed like a nice little detail to give a little UV protection and hopefully brightened your day a little too. Hit like and subscribe if you enjoyed and want more content like this. A short video on a quick barber hauler staysail setup I have rigged onboard to make sailing a little more enjoyable. Let me know what you think in the comments. A little bit of budget sailing tech to make sailing more enjoyable.
Changing a propshaft anode. Not the most difficult job, but with 6 parts ( 2nut, 2 bolts, 2 anode halves) its a handful to try and not drop whilst holding your breath. This little tip should make it a little easier. Noting our original anode had fizzled itself away, the time came to do a quick change to the new one and Karli was right there with a camera to record something I otherwise would not have recorded, a small tip on making changing the anode easier without any dive gear or lifting out. Sailboat Maintenance day.
A little video a made before Xmas, and forgot about. Figured I might as well post it as it is in the realms of 'Kind of Interesting', if you are interested in the loads sweating a dockline creates. Roughly made but there we go. This is a follow up video based on the first dockline load video I made. Hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think I got wrong :). Its been rare, but a couple of times I have come across situations where a sailboat cannot be brought into the dock by sweating a dockline. This is usually pretty extreme circumstances (+40knots of wind, very little protection from seawalls etc). It caused me to wonder, why can't a boat always be moved if sweating a line can potentially give an infinite tension on the line. This is a little bit of figuring out why that is. Our adventure, sailing hiking climbing vlog.
Heyyooo everybody! Thanks for being here! This week we are finally getting feeling a bit less sniffly and making our way onwards and northwards up the Atlantic coast of Portugal and into Spain (sorry for the spoiler). We will sail from Lisbon to Nazare, which hosts some of the largest waves ever recorded (!!!) and then make another couple of stints until we reach Galicia, Spain. We'll anchor up the river near Aveiro, and also in the outskirts of Porto. The winds that blow along this coast are pretty predictable this time of year. The trade winds that dominate this bit of sea will start to set in around the beginning of May, blowing North to South with very little break in between. With this knowledge in mind, we head north, where the water is blue, the dolphins are cute, and the food is good! Getting out the bay of Cadiz and Back onto the Brutal Atlantic Portuguese Coastline. This one might give a rough idea of the type of weather windows we try to use when moving the boat. Join us as we manouver our way through life without a clue. A quick edit this week as we have been on the move. Hope you enjoy.
A classic line uttered goodness knows how long ago. Should we have listened to it?
We are back on the road/sea after a long winter in port, it feels great to be moving, a short vid on the emotions of sailing any given day and the joys of cruising. We are heading North!! A Quick thought of the day- something we often see miss- getting a dockline around a cleat from onboard/ from a little distance. Normally one of us steps off the boat to tie to a cleat, or passes a line ashore. Today, a little basic technique we were shown right back at the beginning of sailing we though might be useful for some people out there, let us know if you have better techniques . Hope you enjoy. Hello folks! This week on our liveaboard sailing vlog we finally encounter the sights and sounds of spring! Birds chirping, flowers blooming, and the.. lovely thunk of Ben's head against the mast as he's forced to go up the mast mid-voyage? Is this a classic spring activity for anyone else? Just us? Well certainly the first sail of the season was bound to come with a few problems to work out! We've been nestled away in our little corner of the marina all winter long, sitting nicely while mussels and barnacles made their home on our hull. But unfortunately for them, as the weather turns gentle and the days get longer, we cannot sit idly. They've got to come off. We've got places to be! But the question is, which places? Thanks for hanging out with us while we decide which direction to go. And by 'decide', I mean... stew in our indecision. But at least we were accompanied by our dear friend @SailingAlanouwoly , who lives and travels aboard her own 28 foot sailboat! If you've been here all winter, we appreciate you sticking it out with us as we did a boat load (hahahaha) of boat maintenance. To reward your valor and bravery, we shall present you with fun and sunshine and travels from this day forward! Maybe even the occasional dolphin if we're lucky! And if you're new here, welcome aboard :) you've arrived just in time. If you're really enjoying our videos and would like to buy us a coffee, you can do so at the link below! This week, a weather update, a dis-assembled steering system, UV damage repairs, reefing point, carnival, interior seat covers- finally, and the daily happenings onboard. What a lot for a week. Welcome to the sailing vlog where people just seem to repair boats instead of sail. A realistic view of what sailing is like for the majority of dreamers. I wouldn't change it for the world.
Making a few changes to our onboard water storage after deciding to open up what we though was a small 60litre tank we had never used and finding it was a 150litre tank.. Filtration, purification.
