Join us for this weeks episode as we undertake some engine maintenance aboard Nendaz. This time I handed the reigns over to Flick to have a go. She reluctantly took the baton and narrated her way through the maintenance jobs she was carrying out. The whole premise behind this one is that anyone can do an oil change with a little bit of research or guidance. Flick has no prior engine experience and (almost) enjoys the whole process. Join Flick to change the oil on our Perkins Prima M50, replace the oil filter, and then replace the primary fuel filter, which was well overdue!

Welcome back to Navel Gazing at Camp David. This week we are heading back over to the African continent and the Royal Cape yards in Durban South Africa for a look at their flag ship… The Royal Cape Majestic 570 Fly! Today we will, 1. Review its specifications, pricing and layout against three similar new vessels. 2. Do a full tour asking, "What would Sylvia say?" 3. Naval Gaze at an innovation and/or adjustment that might make life aboard easier 4. Have a look at the used market for 3–5-year-old comparables. 5. And finally give it a "Dave Score" and compare the result with all our previously reviewed yachts. All this fun will be sandwiched between a pairing of wine and a work of art from the same region as the guest yacht, in an effort to capture the culture and people who gave birth to these wonderful vessels. Waves, wine, art, and ideas…What a great way to spend thirty minutes, so let's get going. From high above Vancouver, we head east across the continent and the Atlantic to the West of France and the home of last week's guest yacht in Rochefort at the Yards of Nautitech. Heading all the way down the European continent and further south east down the African continent, we arrive at the home of this week's guest yacht at the Durban yards of Royal Cape Catamarans in South Africa. Finally we hop south west the stunning Stellenbosch wine region near Cape Town and the home of this week's wine pairing, Rascallion Pandiculation Shiraz blend 2020 Pandiculation is a blend of 88% Shiraz and 12% Grenache Noir. Fruit for this blend was carefully selected from two younger blocks of vineyards on North facing slopes and elevation of 170-210m, chosen for their soft ripened fruit and tannins. The Shiraz grapes ripened in deep Hutton and Clovelly soils which is granite derived and have a high gravel content ensuring balanced growth and fruit that ripened at lower sugar levels. The Grenache was planted in 2008 on northwest facing slopes, producing smaller bunches with intense flavours. Efficient canopy management practices such as suckering, and tipping ensured sufficient sunlight penetrated them canopy. Both parcels of grapes ripened with a natural high acidity and lower pH level. The grapes were handpicked in late February, very early in the morning, which allowed for the grapes to be delivered cold to the cellar where they were hand sorted, some de-stemmed and lightly crushed and others whole bunch fermented. The two cultivars were vinified separately. Fermentation took place in open fermenters for the Shiraz and a closed fermenter for the Grenache. After a short maceration period of 7 days after primary fermentation for the Shiraz, and 3 days for the Grenache, both wines were matured for 18 months in old 300L French oak barrels. Malo-lactic fermentation took place in Stainless Steel tanks. The wines were blended prior to bottling. The result is a powerful aromatic wine showing flavours of pepper, plums and liquorice. The palate weight is medium bodied and start fresh following through into a soft balance of sweet- sour prunes and black cherries. Innovation Corner • Royal Cape Majestic 570 Fly : https://royalcapecatamarans.com Garmin SURROUND VIEW CAMERA SYSTEM We have them on our cars, vans and motorhomes, so it seems quite reasonable to have this latest technology installed on our motorboats and sailing yachts. Garmin has introduced the marine industry' first fully integrated system of cameras to offer a bird's-eye view for a full 360-degree observation. The system utilises a six-camera array for full situational awareness using augmented reality (graphic overlays) to offer the skipper or captain distance markers and a visual bumper which can be pre-set to assist with docking or to monitor external objects. SEAMLESS SITUATIONAL AWARENESS The 360-degree video feed integrates with compatible Garmin chartplotters or MFD helm displays. Each camera view can also be monitored individually. VISUAL BUMPER A visual bumper feature helps the captain see when docks, piers or other objects breach preset barrier limits around the boat. DISTANCE MARKERS In tight manoeuvring situations, distance markers around the boat provide visual cues to help maintain safe clearance and separation. ENGINEERED FOR LOW MAINTENANCE Thru-hull OEM installation offers secure fit and calibration of the Surround View Camera System. For easy maintenance, any of the cameras can be replaced externally. Art of The Region For our art of the region pairing today we are enjoying MAKIWA MUTOMBA, Children In a Red Boat

#catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailing #retirement The first leg of our adventure begins with a sail up the coast to #BeaufortNC, part of the #outerbanks. Waiting for the weather to warm up north, we spent a week in Beaufort. Wild horses, endless beaches, and great sailing on this trip, in spite of a few storms! CAPTAIN'S LOG Pilar set sail from Charleston, SC for Beaufort, NC. A gale had just blown through for the last (3) days with winds of 30 – 45 kts and sea offshore 14-25’. In fact, a cruise ship bound for Charleston had windows of the lower deck blown out. They took on lots of water and had substantial damage in the cabins and lower decks. No one was hurt in the incident. Luckily, by the time we set sail in the evening of May 28 the seas were very comfortable in a following set with true wind speeds of 20 kts. We had a very comfortable sail through the night, but the winds began to subside in the early hours of the next day. Finally, with 70 some miles to go we had to crank one motor for forward assist and finally the second later in the day. By mid-day the seas were flat calm with winds of only 3-5 kts. So, we motored the rest of the way into Beaufort arriving by 5:00am about 36 hours from our departure from Charleston just as we had planned. Not wanting to come in the inlet in the dark, and quite tired from our watched we decided to anchor just outside the inlet, rest and come in later in the morning. Within minutes we were surrounded by sport fishing boats leaving the harbor for the fish day. You’ll remember it was calm seas so apparently every boat in Beaufort fished that day. We couldn’t stay at anchor in the wakes of those boats, so we quickly pulled anchor and made our way to the Beaufort anchorage in Taylor Creek just across from town. We’ve spent a few days enjoying Beaufort, visiting my old friend Scott Hall from Islamorada, and doing some boat projects and repairs. Repairs and Maintenance – Once anchored and reviewing the boat I found the topping lift had chaffed in (2) places and was done for duty. Just before we raised the mainsail had taken down the US flag that was flying on the topping lift and re-secured the topping lift in its cleat. Apparently, I left it too tight, and it seems the chaff came from the battens on the mainsail. I mistake from which I learned. I also upgraded our saltwater head pump in the starboard hull. (And cleaned out the raw water inlet clamshells). The pump was very slow and took forever to get enough water for a flush. I replaced the PAR 4, 3.8 gpm pump with a PAR 6, 6 gpm pump. The head filled in 1:46 minutes with the PAR 4, 20 seconds with the PAR 6. I later found the diaphragms in the PAR for were broken. So, I’ve ordered repair kits for the (3) Par 4’s on board and will do those repairs upon arrival of the kits. But we’re keeping the PAR 6 in the starboard hull. Next week we plan to anchor in the Cape Lookout Bight for a few days while we await weather conducive to sail around Hatteras and into the Chesapeake Bay. Rescuing a stray kitten and saving a cat - Sailing Malaysia This week we save two cats in the space of one week. After spending two weeks sailing down the south west coast of Thailand with our crew of sailing teenagers we now find ourselves and our live aboard cruising catamaran back at Rebak Island Marina, getting ready to haul out for the second time in two months. The alarm and warning light, that indicates a water leak past the first Flange or diaphragm on the sail-drive into the sealed cavity has been sounding intermittently. To ignore this warning sign could sink the boat. So another haul out it is. We will remove the sail-drives, replace the the diaphragms and while we are at it change all the oil seals as well. Later that week we found a tiny kitten in need of rescue. Hit by a car, malnourished, bleeding and overheating Declan and Chanelle carried the kitten back to the boat where we feed her, bathed her and gave her the love that she needed. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #sailing #sail #boatlife #saildrive #TheCruisingKiwis

With our laminating epoxy finally nearing our port, we need to get final preparations done to start laminating. So, this week we worked on the bulkheads, forebeam, and port canoe, all of which will need lamination. That will get our 50' performance catamaran well on her way to getting done and we can set sail on our circumnavigation voyage aboard our DIY sailboat. So come join Captain Blood, Admiral Marianne, and our XO Brian as we prepare out boat for the next phase of construction! RAW BOAT LIFE SAILING in Thailand This is what travelling in our sailing catamaran, circumnavigating the world is all about, getting out and meeting the local people. While walking into town on the remote island of Koh Lipe, Thailand we passed the football pitch where several local kids were hanging out. Our sailing teenagers got involved and soon more joined and game of soccer ensued. Unfortunately for Ivan, while saving a trio of balls from the goal, he rolled his foot causing injury, a possible broken bone. This is boat life in Thailand, visiting remote islands, camping on beaches and hiking through the rainforest in search of waterfalls and best of all meeting the people. Raw sailing life. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #sailing#209#TheCruisingKiwis

Episode 035 One of the best things about sailing is you can be as sociable as you like. Whether you choose to stay in a secluded anchorage to yourself or hang out with friends and other sailors, sailboats give you the freedom to choose. When our friends told us they were sailing up to the Bay of Islands, Adam had the key in Tāiko's ignition before I had finished my sentence - it didn't matter that we were in the middle of our cockpit floor renovation. As we currently work to a four week provisioning schedule on Tāiko, we were ready to go. Soon the sails were up and we were on our way to see another beautiful bay. We also had another good friend joining us for the weekend and we couldn't wait to show her what life was like afloat and the beautiful Bay of Islands, New Zealand. We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song. Please remember to subscribe, like, comment - it helps us out! If commenting, we ask that you be respectful. Any comments made that are intended to be hurtful, disrespectful, antagonistic, and inappropriate to us or our viewers will be deleted and you will be blocked from our channel. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel

From the moment we moved aboard Starry Horizons, I've always felt like there had to be a better way of identifying and tracking all the maintenance and work needed to keep her sailing safely. My spreadsheets were good, but they could only do so much. So together with my brother, we've finally built a better solution. Introducing Maintenance Right on Schedule: https://MaintenanceROS.com We’ve assembled a large (and ever growing!) database of official maintenance schedules for marine equipment. You can search, customize or even create your own tasks to personalize the maintenance schedule for your boat. And it really is personal. We’ll predict when you need to do that next oil change based on how often you actually use your engine! Not only can you track maintenance, but we have a library of checklists you can use for your boat as well as a 'to-do' list feature for all those small things that need to be done. Sign up at https://MaintenanceROS.com/ for a 14 day free trial and use code “outchasingstars” to get 20% off your first 6 months. This has been such a passion project and I’d love to get feedback on how we’re doing and what else you’d like to see. Thanks for all your support!

06:34 - Backskiste reparieren 08:34 - Sprayhood wiederbeleben 10:35 - Origo 3000 12:40 - Schlusswort #segelboot #segeln #maxifenix #sailaway #sailboatrefit # #sailboat #sailing

Email: ohglorioussanding@gmail.com We forgot to mention the dates in the video, but we'll be traveling the east coast roughly between August 30th to October 1st. A couple of quick notes: - Our labor will be free in return for us being able to film. - We'll provide the labor - you provide the materials. - You don't need to be in the video, but if you'd like to, that is cool too. - We can spend anywhere from 2-5 days per boat, but then we will need to move on to keep some variety in the videos. - Your project must be located on the east coast. - You don't need to worry about housing us or transportation.

went to replace some lid catches today and the main door that I really wanted to get repaired correctly was the only one that took a different part. We are learning that boat repairs and maintenance is not a fun and always perfect endeavor. After 4 months of pulling everything apart, and 8 months of rebuilding my 46 year old boat now has a modern interior and a really high tech propulsion system. Since fitting the solar panels I've never plugged anything in, and we use power just like we would in a house. There's no thoughts on energy usage, no diesel, no petrol, no gas, everything is electric, including the dinghy motor!

Sometimes the most simple tasks are painfully difficult! Definitely the case with setting up these new clips on bungee cording. The lower M section of our lazy jack system deteriorated after 8 years. I temporarily used paracord but that didn't work as well as the bungee cord. #sailing #sailingfamily #boatlife #liveaboardlife #offshoresailing What do you do on a boat in the middle of the ocean with a family aboard? I think life kind of zones into your small space and what is happening in the few metres around you as the boat sails onto your destination. Strange kind of life really with odd rituals that sailors do! In this video I use the Cerakote ceramic trim coat restoration kit to freshen up the external nylon latches on my Bomar forward hatch. I found this product by watching a review video by @ProjectFarm here: https://youtu.be/XXOX4z6uwXo #Sailing #boatmaintenance

This week, Bryan is working on 12V wiring in the master cabin. The goal is to record installing new lights, a fan, and USB charging but the heat throws him some curveballs. This is a long video and you can skip the DIY adventure by scanning to the reaction video, but like any good boat project things are bound to go a little sideways… Next episode, we move to the saloon for some modernization in the “dining and living room” of our new home.
