Tourists TRAPPED by scam - Sailing Malaysia We have been sailing our live aboard sailing catamaran down the Malacca Strait as little day sails, stopping to anchor at night. Unfortunately although we know the dangers of pulling off the Malacca Strait to anchor, we didn't think we would get caught by the scam practiced by a few of the fisherman here. They throw their nets out upstream of your boat then allow them to drift down, trapping your boat. The fisherman next demands money because you have damaged his net by having your boat in his net! It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. Trails on either side of the canal are actively used for biking and hiking and they love to watch the boats transiting the canal! When we left Sassafras River, we were going to stay at Chesapeake City, but we were making good time and the #DelawareBay tide was in our favor, so we transited the canal and made it half way down the Delaware Bay to anchor in #CohanseyRiver for the night. There are not a lot of good places to stop once you enter the Delware Bay, so having the right plan is key. Cohansey was a beautiful, secluded marsh anchorage well protected from the winds. Strong tides but good holding. It’s a great place to lay over if you’re transiting the bay. Up the creek is Greenwich, NJ and a marina and restaurant called The Bait Box - a very local eatery and bar with indoor and outdoor seating, live music, and a local scene. Great menu and cocktails. A must stop if you layover in Cohansey River. 250 hours now on the Beta Marine 35 engine. It is time for some maintenance. In this episode, we change primary/secondary fuel filters, install a vacuum gauge on the primary fuel filter, replace the heat exchanger anode/zinc, inspect/replace the raw water pump impeller, and clean the raw water strainer. After maintenance is completed, we test run the engine and do a visual inspect for leaks and other issues. All good!

I make a DIY stand for my Simrad TP10 Tiller Pilot. This is designed to screw into the deck of my Drascombe Lugger, Lulu leaving a flush deck when not in use. The reason it's quite a fat stand is so that it reduces the forces on the hull under pressure. After almost 3 months away from Galene, we return to the boat yard in Corfu to commence work on a long list of maintenance and upgrade work. Feeling a little overwhelmed by the magnitude of tasks we've set ourselves, we decide to hold our noses and start with the dirtiest of boat jobs first! ANNAPOLIS We spent about 4 days here at one of the Chesapeake Bay and East coast main sailing ports. The best parts: 1. The town itself is historic, with nice restaurants and bars. 2. We took a mooring ball with the Annapolis Harbormaster at $25/day. That gets you baths, laundry and a means for mail and package receipt. 3. We found a GREAT boat supply place - Bacon Sails and Marine. They are a secondhand shop with a large array of sailing gear at used, discounted prices. We picked up some block and tackle we needed for a great price and were able to procure some odd, hard to get parts for our Barbour-hauler. 4. We toured the Naval Academy and that was a treat, as well as lunch at the Officers Club. The worst parts: 1. A bit touristy for us. The typical tourist shops on Main Street were not unique. The weekends get a bit crowded with lots of inland folks coming to enjoy the town. 2. Harbor is crowded, mooring balls are very close to each other with lots of boats sailing very close to ours. 3. Water was broken at the harbormaster dock. Only one washing machine/dryer and it’s in the bathroom. FEATURED LIGHTHOUSES Shoal Light. Thomas Point Shoal. South River, Maryland. New Point Comfort Lighthouse. Near Hampton Roads. SOUTH RIVER - HARNESS CREEK - QUIET WATERS STATE PARK What a cool quiet anchorage so close to Annapolis ! The nearby Quiet Waters State Park has plenty of hiking trails and water overlooks, as well as concerts throughout the summer. There is a West Marine just a short walk out of the park as well. GIBSON ISLAND MD This was an unexpected anchoring pleasure only a couple hours north of Annapolis! A horse farm turned boarding facility sits on the hill overlooking the water, osprey nests, and pure nature. Nearby Dobbins Island and Little Island have private island homes. A week of adventure! We conclude last week's sailing passage from Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Gloucester, Massachusetts, arriving on a mooring at the end of the day. From there, Robin found a sweet intracoastal passage on the Annisquam River, which connects Gloucester Harbor to Ipswich Bay. This makes a lot of firsts, including calling for bridge openings. Two hours later, Arabella arrived in the Merrimack River, which is a tricky place for any boat to navigate because of rocks, intense currents, and at this time, perigean spring tides. We recognize this project is ambitious, so being prepared is critical. We had downwind sailing, following seas and great weather for our trip. We sailed 34 hours from Cape Lookout to Hampton Virginia in the Chesapeake Bay. It was in the wind getting out of the Cape Lookout Bight and around the tip of the Cape. Once we made the turn we had good wind to get around Hatteras. When we turned from Hatteras to head to the Bay we were in the wind shadow from land and eventually had to motor sail through much of the night. Once daylight broke the wind came up and we hoisted full sails to sail into the Bay. Across the Bay and through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge -Tunnel was a lot of freighter ship traffic. No problem staying out of the main channel and giving them plenty of berth. WE ALSO REPORT ON SIX ANCHORAGES IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. PHOEBUS VA - MILL CREEK - Easy stop after entering the bay. Busy trafficked bridge nearby, but cute little town with easy access to town dinghy dock, groceries, hardware store and restaurants. We loved Fuller's Raw Bar. We also were able to get an easy uber to Newport News for a museum visit and any retailer you would need. MATTHEWS VA - MOBJACK BAY - Beautiful spot, but you can only take dinghy to town on low tide. We did not know this in advance and ended up getting a kind offer from a couple on the river to dock our dinghy there as well as borrow their car for a quick trip to town hardware and the Seafood Shack for the freshest catch around! Thanks to Tom, Ally and their kids, Helen, Sammy, and Charlotte - you were too kind! Also well known for it's Zimmerman Marine boatyard. They pull the catamarans out of the water with a truck and trailer on a boat ramp. We visited the yard and there were at least 60 catamarans there from all manufacturers. Many are there for work, some for storage while their owners return home and come back later for another departure. REEDVILLE, VA - Cute town, but restaurant only open on weekends right now. Had to dinghy by the Menhaden plant just to see it. The smell was a little overpowering. Menhaden have a long history in the Chesapeake Bay harvested for animal food, fertilizer, food additives and Omega fish oil. Extreme overfishing of menhaden effected the ecosystem of the bay. Today there remains only one Omega fish oil plant and it is this one. DELTAVILLE, VA - FISHING BAY anchorage was a pure joy. Fishing Bay Marina offers $25 daily passes to their facilities - pool, laundry, bikes, and sometimes a courtesy car. Yacht club nearby offers sailing camp lessons. Our friend Grace Parker made a visit for a day. We really enjoyed having her bubbly, positive personality on board. SOLOMON ISLANDS, MD - Crowded anchorage and no convenient dinghy docks - not a favorite. KENT ISLAND, MD - Beautiful, full of nature but we didn't stay long. The Cape Cod Canal is an engineering marvel many years in the making, if you count all the preliminary surveys and even an earlier iteration of it many years ago. Martinique’ de kalmaya niyetlenmiş olan Gypsea teknesi de (Derya ve Orhan) bize katılmaya karar verince 3 tekne fırtınayı Tyrell Bay’de geçirdik. Önümüzde ağustos, eylül ve ekim ayları fırtına ve kasırga olasılıkların daha yüksek olduğu zamanlar. Daha güneye inmek için konumumuz şimdi daha uygun. Dünya yaşıyor, depremler, fırtınalar, kasırgalarla iç ısısı ile kabuğunu dengelemeye çalışıyor sanırım. Her coğrafya bunların bazılarından nasibini alıyor. In this Captain's Vlog I updated the Electric Dinghy Motor with a Pistol Grip remote control, and a new ESC (Electronic Speed Control) This is a DIY SailboatLife Hack and I'm making steady progress. In the previous episode dedicated to the electric outboard motor I successfully powered the trolling motor with 2 Ryobi Hand-tool batteries. In this episode I successfully pair a RC Pistol Remote Controller with my Newport 24v 86lbs thrust Trolling motor... and it worked! Kinda-sorta worked... and then it didn't. Blew out the new speed controller so I didn't get very far. Anyone got any good leads on a decent ESC for a brushed 24v motor?
