Having spent a couple of days at anchor in some stunning islands in the Gulf of Lyon near Marseille we began to navigate our way past the navigation buoys and towards an anchorage near the mouth of the mighty Rhône river when we spotted something half buried in the sand… We anchored and went ashore to investigate and found the mast of a shipwrecked sailing boat being consumed by the sand!!! Episode 040 The time has come again for us to leave the marina and spend a few weeks living on anchor. True New Zealand style though, there always seems to be another low pressure system coming. However, to be fair, it’s still spring. This time, it’s the remnants of Cyclone Lola mixed with a low pressure system and a high pressure system is sitting off the South Island. We’re in the squash zone. It’s been well forecasted so we had the opportunity and time to seek out a good secure anchorage and prepare us and Tāiko for what is to come. Having just installed an inner forestay, meant that the Sampson post that we once had was now being used for the inner forestay and Adam installed two new bow cleats. We’d also just invested in new anchor rode and a heavier Rocna anchor. A good opportunity for us to test our new systems and collect some water! We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. The crew of s/v Airi Alee at our marina made a decision to buy a new Liferaft once the 10-man raft that came with the boat reached 7 years old. At that point, certification should be done every year. We manually inflated the raft in the swimming pool at Dockside Marina and Resort, South Hutchinson Island, Fort Pierce FL located on the Atlantic inlet. Sailboat Life on the Hard was some of the hardest Sailboat jobs that I've done so far. I chose the Napa Valley Marina over all the other Marinas in the San Francisco Bay area because they were the only one that would allow me to stay on my sailboat while I was doing the work. If you live on your sailboat like I do, this is kinda important! Super cool boat sled that they use to haul your boa out of the water, and then it's sanding, Sanding, SANDING! I hate sanding. Got 3 coats of expensive bottom coat on the bottom of Dagny. Managed some basic engine maintenance, and managed to get it all done in 9 days. Total cost was about $1700! We flew directly from Europe to Norfolk to ready While One for Season 2. We learned a lot from last year and spent the better part of July and these handful of days prior to heading south, provisioning and doing maintenance on While One. In this Episode is a How To change the engine and transmission oil on a Honda, 15 H.P. engine. There is also a How To on ascending the mast to fix a problem while trying to raise our headsail. It's a lot of hard work. We also successfully completed sailing around Cape Hatteras for the first time as a couple, without the assistance of a captain and his first mate. This trip was cause for much deliberation. We constantly watched our forecast models on PredictWind, read Chris Parker's forecasts and the National Hurricane Center and made our own interpretations. Our current insurance policy requires us not to navigate south of Cape Hatteras from July thru October. The weather was shaping up for a perfect rounding...but doing so would result in us being south of Hatteras before November. We reached out to the insurance agent on Thursday, requesting permission...it took them practically a week to give us a written endorsement and by that time, we had already made the trip. Suffice it to say, it was a good decision. Introduction to cruising Chesapeake Bay in 2024. This series will focus on sailing to various destinations on Chesapeake Bay. I will cover anchorages, towns and cities. we had a busted d100 dessalator and found a cheap.way to fix it diy style. usibg a pressure washer and some stainless syeel parts from amazon we make 100Litres an hour of drinking water. a pump protector filter to par max 4 from jabsco to a 20micron pleated filter then a 5 micron filter. on to the pressure washer a basic 105bar total brand washer for 120$, then to the memranes three in series then to the panel we control the flow through a needle valve from amazon and a swagelok pressure relief valve acts as saftey. we fitted a fresh water flush and an inline tds (total dissolvable solids) reader to measure the ppm (parts per million) this 20 dollars and battery powered. the membranes we got from boundless outfitters for 230 each. needle valve and safety valves we 300 in total. all stainless. 1/4".

We go to the San Blas Islands and enjoy the snorkeling, the food and island life. But we also have some emergency work we have to do... we would be in some trouble without power! Our generator is a critical item. WATCH to the END... radio communications and side bar conversations...

BLAUWASSERYACHT BESCHREIBUNG: Unsere Segelyacht aus Stahl eine Maupiti 39, zur Gänze von uns selbst gefertigt, ist seit 2010 unser Domizil an der Adria. Auf knapp 12m Länge und 3,50m Breite bietet der gemäßigte Langkieler für 2 - 4 Personen Komfort wie ihn auch viel größere Yachten nicht haben. So wird an Bord elektrisch gekocht. Auch der Aussenborder ist elektrisch. Wir wollten kein Gas und auch keinen separaten Generator. Als Energiespeicher fungiert eine 2020 erneuerte 24 Volt Batteriebank (12 Stück 2 Volt Zellen )mit 1.200 AH, wie sie auch in großen elektrischen Gabelstaplern verwendung finden, für die komplette Bordelektrik. Unser Sinus-Inverter/Lader (Studer XTender 5000/24) mit 5.000 Watt Leistung liefert den Haushaltsstrom mit 220 Volt für die beiden Induktionskochfelder in der Kombüse sowie sämtliche Elektrogeräte auch ohne Landanschluss oder Maschinenlauf. Das Elektrokonzept (selbstverständlich 2 polig und massefrei) hat sich seit mehr als 14 Jahren bestens bewährt. Die Batterien werden mit einer vom Bootsmotor angetriebenen zweiten Lichtmaschine 24V/100A, sowie beim Segeln von einem Wellengenerator geladen. Der Landanschluss lädt diese über einen Trenntrafo und den Studer XTender 5000/24 Sinus-Inverter/Lader. Neuerdings auch über 2 getrennte 24V Fotovoltaik Zellen mit je 100 Watt und 2 separaten MPPT Reglern. Ein verstopfungssicheres elektrisches LAVAC WC, die 11 KW Webasto Warmwasserheizung mit Boiler, die Betten mit Lattenrosten, die Deckwaschpumpe, die Selbstwendefock sowie der sehr schnelle und starke hydraulische Autopilot von Tecnautic Swiss sind weitere Highlights. Der Bootsrumpfbau war für mich als Metaller viel einfacher und praktikabler auszuführen als ursprünglich gedacht. (Posthum ein großes Dankeschön an den genialen Konstrukteur Anton Luft!) Der Antrieb erfolgt mit einem sehr leisen 5 Zylinder Diesel 62 PS, 2.800ccm von Beta Marine (Basis Kubota) mit hydraulischem ZF Wendegetriebe über Gelenkwelle/Hardyscheiben/Drucklager zum 19/13" dreiflügeligen Festpropeller, der beim Segeln ab 5Kn den Wellengenerator antreibt. Die ganze Technik vom Feinsten. Selbstverständlich sind alle anderen, zur Seefahrt notwendigen Dinge vorhanden. Seit Sommer 2019 segeln wir, da in Pension, ohne Zeitbeschränkung in der Adria. 2022 haben wir auch einen sehr leistungsfähigen, von der Maschine angetriebenen DIY Wassermacher mit 240 L/h eingebaut.

However, it has a had a niggling intermittent problem since Spain. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't and because it has a manual override the job of investigating it never found its way to the top of the jobs list, until now. After testing the wiring I traced it back to the circuit board and found a lose terminal block that was inmpossible to repair in situ, so I had to remove before I could get a decent solder repair. If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on how to repair winch circuit boards.. or even marine winches in general, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos.
