Cette sortie en mer était l'occasion idéale pour effectuer le carénage du bateau ainsi que le changement des anodes, deux tâches cruciales pour assurer la performance et la durabilité de notre fidèle navire. Le carénage est un processus qui permet de nettoyer et de traiter la coque du bateau, éliminant les salissures, les algues et autres résidus marins qui peuvent affecter la navigation et la vitesse. De plus, nous avons pris soin de remplacer les anodes, ces pièces métalliques qui jouent un rôle vital dans la protection du catamaran contre la corrosion électrolytique. C'est une étape clé pour préserver la structure en métal de Jaël et éviter toute détérioration prématurée. Nous avons travaillé avec rigueur et enthousiasme, chacun apportant ses compétences et son savoir-faire. Jérôme a supervisé l'ensemble des opérations, tandis qu'Audrey et Loan se sont occupés de certaines parties spécifiques, assurant que tout se passe dans les règles de l'art. Une fois les travaux terminés, nous avons pu constater l'amélioration de la coque et l’efficacité des nouvelles anodes, prêtes à protéger Jaël pour les mois à venir. This week, we continue cruising the Intracoastal Waterway down the east coast of Florida. We miss sailing, but offshore waters were calling for sloppy seas and light winds. With few safe harbors to duck into in the case of emergency, we decided to stay grounded in the ICW. And when we say “stay grounded in the ICW” we REALLY mean it. That’s right, despite following channel markers and using a Garmin chart plotter…we ran our sailboat aground on the way from Saint Augustine to Daytona. The shifting Florida sands can be hard to anticipate. Fortunately, a new friend we met in Saint Augustine was nearby and happy to come to our rescue…James Bond style (but with better music)! We tried twisting her off the sandbar. We tried pushing her off the sandbar. We tried kedging her off the sandbar. We kedged so hard, but to no avail. It wasn’t until a Tow Boat US boat happened to cross our path that we had the power to get our 27,000’ wooden sailboat floating again. Boy, did we put on a show. All of this motoring requires a lot of fuel, and our Keenan Filter system comes in handy for consolidating our fuel, ensuring we have enough gas to get where we’re going without having to switch between fuel tanks while underway. We can’t speak highly enough about Keenan Filters—and we’re not getting paid to say that! Another mechanism we’ve been really happy with is our manual windlass. We’ve been anchoring pretty much every night, and dropping and weighing anchor is easy-peasy—even when caught in an afternoon rainstorm. In Fort Pierce, we stopped for provisions and fuel (and Robin hit the local coffee shop…of course). We also got to watch a wrecked wooden boat get torn apart by an excavator! The process is simple and requires only a few supplies. Supplies: ✔️ Gutermann Sew-All Thread → https://a.co/d/ayM7Se5✔️ Elastic → https://a.co/d/52pDSMN✔️ Elastic threader tool → https://a.co/d/dDXnx1c✔️ King-size fitted or flat sheet → https://a.co/d/d0ZMm3X Steps: 1. Choose a sheet larger than your mattress. 2. If using a fitted sheet, cut off the elastic edge. 3. Determine how much fabric to remove for a snug fit. 4. Cut one corner open to lay the sheet flat. 5. Mark the upper corner with a safety pin for reference. 6. Trim up to 75” (190.5 cm) from the side of the sheet. 7. Open the opposite corner seam to lay it flat. 8. Create a right corner for the other top side. 9. Check the fit of the top corners. 10. Trim any excess fabric from the sides. 11. Shape and sew both bottom corners. 12. Sew a pocket along the bottom edge for the elastic. 13. Feed the elastic through the pocket. 14. Secure the elastic ends with a double square knot. 15. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Throughout the process of building my own wooden sailboat, I had to make several important decisions. Some of these decisions were met with massive support, others…not so much. One important consideration was marine diesel engine maintenance—I wanted it to be as easy as possible! In this week’s episode, we’ll be exploring the 3 best decisions I made while building my sailboat, Arabella. First, the Emmert Pattern Makers’ Vise and workbench, which has been a huge help for rigging projects! This week, the vise came in handy while splicing, seizing, and setting up a beefy anchor pennant line. My sewing skills also came in handy in creating the eye for the line. Ultimately, I’m really happy with how the anchor pennant came out. And I only had to get a little wet (and slightly concussed) to install it… Installing the Pattern Makers’ Vise was one of the more controversial additions to my DIY sailboat, but I’m so glad I have it. The next decision I’m so glad I made was installing a Dual Fuel Filter from Keenan Filters. This system has some great features. It uses twin Racor filters, so there are no expensive, proprietary filters to buy, which I really appreciate. This week, I do a filter swap, and I also show you one of the coolest tricks up this system’s sleeve: it clears any airlocks from the fuel system. The third decision I’m so glad I made was being able to change the oil on our boat with the flick of a switch. Simply turning on the oil change filter and flipping a switch allows us to drain our oil quickly. Then, we just have to flip that switch the other way to fill back up with fresh oil. Many a sailor turns green with envy when we show off these convenient marine engine maintenance systems! After the engine maintenance was done, it was time for some fun! We met up with our friends, Kourtney and Pete, for a day of beaches and BBQ. Captains BBQ in Palm Coast, FL served up some flawless southern BBQ, I made friends with a lizard, and Matanza beach was pink with coquina sand (and plovers, much to Robin’s delight). In this episode Saoirse has Steve and Keith aboard, for "surf week". We fuel up with jerricans, then do a lap around the island of Lombok, hitting some of the local waves on western Sumbawa and southern Lombok. Points of interest include: Scar Reef, Yo-Yo's, Ekas Bay (not pictured), Belongas Bay, and then back to Gili Asahan to stage for Desert Point break. We end up saving a surfer after dark on Scar Reef after we heard him calling out for help. He had lost his board on the break, and was getting pulled out to sea. We were glad to be in a position where we could assist. On the maintenance side, we create some drainage holes to allow water to escape from the flybridge roof, as there is some unknown ingress point. First step, drain what's there...then we'll start working to find and seal the source. Thanks for following!
