After two years living aboard our beloved "once abandoned" sailboat... it is time to let her go. Sacrifice SUCKS until you win : Sailing & rowing No life is without sacrifice. Living on a sailing catamaran constantly moving from anchorage to anchorage, remote tropical island to white sand peninsula doesn't sound too bad but there were big sacrifices made to make this happen and big sacrifices going on still. I believe it is our sailing teens, Declan and Ivan who have sacrificed the most for this nomadic lifestyle. They often go months without seeing other kids their age to interact with so it was wonderful moment, on Tioman Island, when a group of beautiful bikini clad teenagers swam out to the boat. The boys made instant friends and disappeared of to the beach with them to hangout and play football. Our eldest son Finn has made plenty of scarce too for his sport. Training hard, missing social events and getting to bed early in an attempt to make it to the top in his chosen sport, rowing. Today he jumps into his row boat to test himself against the top rowers his age at the World Under 23 rowing championships in what turned out to be a nail biting race to the finishing line. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Menemsha is the city where they filmed much of the movie JAWS. Real people. Real fishing life. With a few good restaurants thrown in for the summer visitors. And the BEST fresh seafood shops around including harpooned Big Eye tuna. No anchorage inside for our size vessel, so good thing we had calm weather and did fine right outside the harbor for 2 nights. July 4th celebration fireworks could be heard all around us. July 5 we decided to go see Gay Head Lighthouse - also called Aquinnah cliffs. In order to get there, we took the dinghy to the back of Menemsha pond, where we met the seafood farming folks, then tied up to a mooring, hiked about 1/3 the way there, and hitchhiked the rest of the way. Two kind ladies picked us up - on their way to a hippie commune - no joke. The lighthouse was in danger of falling into the ocean due to erosion so has been moved back from the cliffs. Then we hitchhiked back to our boat. This time a summer visitor with 2 kids in back picked us up! We can only imagine what the kids shared at the dinner table that night! July 6, we departed for Vineyard Haven, Martha’s Vineyard. There are certainly some beautiful sailing tour boats around - full of people. We hung about on the boat quite a bit here, people watching. We toured an old military hospital converted to museum - where the most interesting part was the gardens. We enjoyed the beautiful homes on the coasts, saw the most unique dinghy in the world, and of course had to visit Black Dog Cafe. Very busy harbor with multiple ferries day and night. Next we visited Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard. We took a ferry and rode bikes on the infamous Chapaquiddick bridge that Ted Kennedy drove his car off, killing his passenger Mary Jo, and ruining his chances for Presidency. (now sporting new guard rails). We spent the afternoon at the rocky beach looking over water shrouded in fog - not exactly my idea of a beach day. Edgartown was a beautiful town with plenty of coves and inlets with beaches, many gorgeous large sailing vessels, old ship captain’s mansions, and summer cottages. On to Nantucket 3 1/2 hour sail - and yes again in the fog. Very good inlet but strong tidal currents to get in. The area truly caters to boaters - massive mooring field with over 125 balls supporting up to 85’ in length, full of mostly local boats. This is where people keep their boats because there’s nowhere on land to keep them, little access to boat launches and sparse marina facilities. Numerous very large motor yachts 100’ or more were Med tied to the Marina. The only available anchorage is small due to depth and in the middle of the current and the path to the Coskata-Coatue wildlife refuge. We became part of the tour of charter and pleasure boats transiting to the refuge. Very strong currents in the anchorage so dinghy deployment is best done on the tide change. Plenty of dinghy docks but often crowded - including children crabbing off the docks. Nantucket was the nicest New England town we saw in these islands. Very rich in history and beauty. The homes, streets and grounds were beautiful and upper class. Many MORE old ship captain’s homes, each one more beautiful than the next. We saw people in sport coats, slacks, and dresses in the evenings even on their boats. We are back! After an extended break we finally got round to editing and uploading a new video for you guys. We set the challenge to do 1 years worth of videos, 52 episodes, and once we did that it was great to just take a step back and relieve ourselves of the pressure for a while. We had a series of family committments to go back to the UK for, we both work part time, have boat maintenance/ jobs to do, and passage planning and sometimes trying to fit in a YouTube video as well means there is little time left to actually enjoy the places we travel. We visited a great solution for boats: an electric motor. It's was amazing to see it in person as we don't see many videos about it and also it was great to see in person to hear it, to feel the throttle and the have the idea of the size of the system. It's impressive. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). Times Magazine also named Tioman Island as one of the top ten most beautiful Islands in the world. The tear shaped Island is home to 2650 people, a lush, mountainous, rainforest jungle and lots of monkeys. While out for a morning run my road was blocked by monkeys. For those of you missing some of the woodworking and boatbuilding projects, we get to some much-anticipated DIY projects while at the mooring in Portland, Maine, such as getting the cherry wood winch bases cut to size, shaped, and installed on the coamings. Spoiler alert, they're beautiful. Other projects tackled: Lazy jacks were installed, and Steve does a cool hardware trick to get the rings he needed for them. It involves stainless steel chain. The roller furler for the furling jib has lengths of stainless steel that need to be cut to size and screwed to each other. Ever used Loctite AND 3M 5200 on a particular thing? This is definitely a measure 8 times cut once scenario, considering how very right it works when it's right, and how very wrong it can go if it's a little off-size. A sunset sail?! S#!% near HEAD-ON COLLISION sailing the worlds busiest shipping lane Today join us as we sail our live aboard catamaran through the Singapore strait, the narrowest part of the Malacca Strait and one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, for what was supposed to be an exciting day of sailing while racing an Outremer. However, it turned into a terrifying dodging of ships as the weather closed in and heavy storms reduced visibility. A squall ripped our sail and the heavy rain white out resulted in us narrowly escaping a collision with an oil tanker. More than 300 large container ships and oil tankers pass through this area everyday. In the Singapore strait these ships get squashed together by the bottleneck created with Singapore to the north and the Indonesian Islands to the south. With so many ships around it's not a place you want to be caught out in a storm. We also have live commentary of Finn's international rowing debut in Lucerne Switzerland. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. #catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailingadventures #LobsterTrap #LobsterPot After transiting the #DelawareBay, we turned the corner in the #AtlanticOcean, and made a quick overnight stop in #CapeMayNJ. We anchored in front of the Coast Guard Station - a small anchorage for only a few boats, however there was heavy pleasure boat traffic in the channel, as it was Fourth of July weekend. Cape May is a go-to beach resort and cottage area for NJ, but seems to be better explored from land, or from the bay side of the bridge. We left at daybreak the next morning to catch the best wind for our next 36 hour sail. #SAILINGTOMARTHASVINEYARD We had a good sail for these 36-hours albeit a bit rough. We had following seas, but they were in the 8-10’ range and a short dominant period. We sailed fast with the parasailor but by evening the wind was too strong for that sail through the night. So, we doused the parasailor and put up the main and genoa. Not as smooth sailing, and not as fast, but safe. Note when we had the parasailor, we saw up to 23 knots TWS and were making 10-11 knots SOG. Very fast. We #snaggedalobstertrap in our rudder during this trip, but were able to remove it AND save the lobster pot gear for the fisherman. By morning we lost wind velocity, speed, and direction. We were originally heading to Nantucket to make the trip east to west, Nantucket to Newport. But with the change in wind, we changed our destination to Martha’s Vineyard. This would dramatically change our overall trip plans since we’re now going west to east, Martha’s Vineyard to Nantucket. But that’s what sailing is all about. Welcome back to our channel, sailors! Today, we have a DIY project for you on replacing the air conditioner raw water pump on a sailboat. A faulty water pump can lead to poor cooling performance and even damage your system, so it's essential to keep it in tip-top shape. Here's how you can replace it yourself with just a few tools and some know-how. Projects like this are part of everyday boat life. The air conditioner water pump receives raw water that passes through a sea strainer. Hoever over time, small pieces of barnacles or debris can still make its way to your water pump causing it to leak. This type of malfunction is not covered by the pump warranty, so it is important to maintain your sea strainers clean and check them on a weekly basis. To remove the pump first, locate the water pump on your sailboat's air conditioning unit. It's usually found near the unit itself or within the engine room. Next, shut off the power to the air conditioner and disconnect any electrical connections to ensure your safety. Make sure you close the thru hull that feeds water to the pump before removing. Now, use a wrench or screwdriver to disconnect the water supply hose from the pump. Be prepared for some water to spill out, so have a towel or bucket handy. Next, remove the mounting bolts holding the pump in place using a screwdriver. Once removed, carefully take out the old pump from its location. This is a great opportunity to adjust your hoses to avoid kinks or pinches. Now, place the new water pump into position and secure it with the mounting bolts. If you are replacing a similar pump, your mounting holes should match which will make the job easier. Reconnect the water supply hose to the new pump and tighten it with your wrench or pliers. Finally, reconnect any electrical connections you had disconnected earlier. Once everything is securely in place, it's time to test your new water pump. "Welcome back to our Boat Commissioning series! In this episode, we'll guide you through the installation of canvas and electronics on your boat. Let's get started! First, let's talk about canvas. It's important to choose the right kind of materials that will withstand the elements and provide durable protection. When installing canvas, make sure to use the right size framing and corrosion-resistant hardware for your specific design. For example, if you are going to install solar panels on your bimini frame, you may want to go to bigger stainless steel tubing on this Catalina 445 we went with 1.25” Stainless Steel to account for the additional weight of the solar panels and to stiffen the frame. Now, let's move on to electronics. When wiring your boat, safety is paramount. Start by creating a comprehensive electrical plan, labeling each wire, and using color-coded cables for easy identification. Ensure all connections are properly sealed to prevent water damage. When mounting electronics, consider their location for convenient access and protection from rough waters. As you can see, running wiring through a boat after construction is not an easy task and it is very time consuming. You have to open access points along the way to do your wire runs. So it is extremely important that you use the right gauge wire for the distance of the run and the use of the electronic. Cutting corners and using cheap thin wire, creates heat, adds resistance to the current flow and affects the life of your equipment. During installation, don't forget to follow manufacturer's instructions and consult a professional if needed. Properly grounding your electronics system is crucial for safety and optimal performance. Lastly, don't overlook regular maintenance. Make it a habit to inspect your canvas and electronics periodically for any signs of wear or malfunction. Clean any dirt or salt residue from the canvas and regularly test electronics to ensure they're working properly. Remember, a well-installed canvas and electronics system will not only enhance your boating experience but also ensure your safety on the water.
