This episode, we Sail Deep into ARNHEM LAND in the Northern Territory, where we meet a couple of locals who give us permission to go and explore the Abandoned Pearl Farm at Croker Island where we dodge a large CROCODILE, Spot some WILD HORSES, and watch a MANTA RAY swim past, before making our way up to the King River to catch a couple of BARRAMUNDI!! We also show you how we make water and carry out a few other Boat Jobs along the way!! We are a couple from WA who have moved on board our Yacht in search of adventure, fishing, diving and surfing while living from what the ocean provides and having a bloody great time along the way. Rudders have been our number one priority on this abandoned catamaran rebuild - and since we were quoted $50,000 to have them made, we’ve decided to take the risk and build them ourselves. We’ve roped in a few great minds to help bring them to life, which means there’s no shortage of ideas… or opinions. Something tells us this DIY might take a little longer than we expect... Quiet night in the Wrangell shipyard before we sandblast the port side of the Alaskan Gypsy. This corner of the keel had acted like a sacrificial anode over the years, dissolving from electrolysis after the sacrificial anodes (zincs) had all been. consumed. I’m filling it back in with 6010 rod, overhead, one fat bead at a time. It’s nice laying down doing some calm relaxing overhead 6010 late in the evening. In this short: • Overhead welding on the keel corner • Repairing electrolysis damage • Relaxed night-shift shipyard vibes Sometimes it’s not about finishing - it’s about staying with the work until the lights go out. ⸻ #AlaskanGypsy #SteelBoat #Welding #ShipyardLife #SailboatRefit #BoatRestoration #HullRepair #6010Rod #BoatDIY

Big progress in the Alaskan Gypsy shipyard restoration — the bow thruster, after much debate, is finally gone! and welding shut, gone for good. Or, until next haul out at least! This old jet-style hydraulic setup never really worked for much we are told, but it left four holes in the bow and a big repair project behind. In this episode, I cut out the last of the system and through repeated acts of contortionist weld plate over the openings. In this video: • Cutting out the old thruster through hulls for patches • Welding new steel plates over the openings • Reflections on simplicity, maintenance, and reliability Slow-TV meets shipyard life — just a man, a few tools, a lot of awkward welding positions, and a dream of getting back to sea. ⸻ 📑 Chapters 00:00 Intro – What’s Wrong with the Bow Thruster 01:15 Cutting Out the Old System 03:40 Hull Cleanup and Prep 06:30 Fitting the New Plates 08:45 Welding and Grinding 11:00 Zinc Primer and Wrap-Up 13:30 Reflections from the Shipyard #AlaskanGypsy #SteelBoat #BoatRestoration #SailboatRefit #ShipyardLife #BowThruster #HullRepair #Welding #BoatDIY

Winter’s coming, and it’s time to get your boat ready! In this video, we’ll show you how to flush the seawater system on a small yacht engine — running fresh water through to clear out salt and clean the heat exchanger. In this episode, we set sail from Borneo on an incredible passage toward Belitung Island, Indonesia — a place so unique it’s been recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. As we approach the coast, we’re greeted by Belitung’s dramatic granite rocks rising from turquoise waters, creating one of the most stunning seascapes we’ve ever seen. We spend a few magical days exploring the island, wandering between sculpted boulders and white-sand beaches that feel untouched by time. But the calm doesn’t last for long — on our next leg, the weather turns. We find ourselves sailing through sudden tropical squalls, dodging rain and lightning while crossing one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Once safely in Malaysia, we check in and prepare to leave our boat for a while — because our next stop is Singapore! From the tranquility of the sea to the vibrant pulse of the city, we can’t wait to dive into Singapore’s fascinating culture, explore its mix of tradition and modernity, and, of course, sample its incredible food. Join us on this journey across Southeast Asia — from wild anchorages and stormy crossings to the bright lights and rich stories of Singapore. 🌏 In This Episode: Sailing from Borneo to Belitung, a UNESCO Global Geopark Exploring Belitung’s iconic granite rock formations Facing tropical squalls and heavy shipping traffic Checking into Malaysia by boat Traveling to Singapore to explore culture, food, and city life Music in this video deserves a Thanks to : " Word we Will Remember" by Josh Woodward. The transformation begins! After months of mental anguish (see our earlier vides ;-), welding, and prep work, I finally suit up and sandblast the hull of our 80-foot steel schooner Alaskan Gypsy. As a first timer, I did the job in 8hrs because the sandblast pot was apparently clogged unbeknownst to me . . Anyhow- This is the day it all changes - from rust and corrosion to clean white metal and the first coat of zinc primer. Ignorance is bliss and I was on cloud 9 breathing paint fumes with my dad late into the night. If you want to see some of the mental anguish and gymnastics that led us to this day check out this endless monologue on the matter. I dare you. https://youtu.be/SP6bf04TepU?si=My0stRFdz269JIiF In this video: • Cobbling together a second half to the paint and blast shelter • Full sandblast of the lower hull (not recorded cause it was crazy) • Applying the first coat of PPG zinc primer in the wrong way. • Lessons learned about pressure, grit, and flash-rust. Shipyard life at its finest - loud, dirty, and deeply satisfying. ⸻ 📑 Chapters 00:00 Setting up more Blast Shelter 01:00 Preparing the Equipment 02:45 Sandblastering Gypsy into a new life 04:30 The Hull Turns Silver 06:00 Rolling on Zinc Primer 08:30 End-of-Day Reflections ⸻ #AlaskanGypsy #BoatRestoration #SteelBoat #SailboatRefit #ShipyardLife #Sandblasting #BoatDIY #HullRepair #ZincPrimer

🏍️Hayabusa, Poop, Basil, Dill, Dolphin🐬, Busa not P@#sy I strapped my hands across his engines. Riding on the Hayabusa is hot! The sound of the 194 HP engine, the gentle vibrations, the power is intoxicating. Karen loves the galley floor, a little too much, but nice. It's always great to see dolphins swimming free. Boat maintenance is ever present. Trying to keep the deck pristine is a workout. Bird poop tends to stain the deck. Maybe that's where "poop deck" came from. Our dill and basil are really growing. Karen is jumping for joy and exercise. Why do people abandon boats? Some just leave them to rot others store them in a slip to rot. Sad. Join us as we finish one of the biggest jobs aboard — refinishing all the aluminum on our sailboat, including the mast, boom, crossbeam, spreaders, and davits. We’re using a professional metal conditioning power tool and a unique product called Nyalic — a clear coating not often seen in the yachting world. Most aluminum masts are painted or anodized, but Nyalic offers a long-lasting, UV-resistant finish that’s easier to apply and far less expensive than paint. Things didn’t go as planned: on the day we were set to finish the mast, Shawn had a serious pressure washer accident, sending us to the hospital for emergency surgery to prevent infection and compartment syndrome. The next day, Geri returned to the boat to finish the job alone — a tough day’s work ending just as the sun went down. If you’re considering how to protect or restore your aluminum spars, this video covers everything from metal prep and conditioning to real-world lessons about safety, teamwork, and life aboard. We are Eric, Kimberley, and Distin. We are from Alaska. We started our adventures in Alaska on our Nordhavn 55. We sold her and are now beginning our adventures on a new to us Nordhavn 50. In this episode, we’re hunkered down in Nova Scotia as Hurricane Erin makes its way up the coast! While we wait out the storm, we explore some incredible local spots — Deep Cove, Scotch Cove, and Schooner Cove. When a nearby sailboat needs rescuing, Eric jumps in to lend a hand. Between storm prep and helping out, we enjoy a few great dinners, visit the East River Shipyard, and keep morale high with a tequila tasting contest while waiting for Erin to pass. If you’re dreaming of living on board a Nordhavn or buying a Nordhavn for bluewater cruising, this video offers a firsthand look at the challenges and rewards of long-term boat life. We’ll take you behind the scenes to see how we manage real-life boating situations—from maintenance issues to steering failures—and offer tips for anyone planning to live aboard or buy a Nordhavn. These are our adventures on our Nordhavn. How we live and where we go. Thanks for following along with our adventures! Viel Erfolg bei Eurem Nähprojekt 😀 In this video, I sew a new window into the large side panel of our bimini. There are a few tricks and tips that make the job easier and quickly lead to great results. I do it the same way a sailmaker did it on one of our small side windows. I use my heavy-duty sewing machine for the sewing work, but any standard household sewing machine should work as long as the window film is not too thick. It is important to use the right needle size and strong, UV-resistant sewing thread. Good luck with your sewing project 😀

In this episode, our sailing life in the Canary Islands takes us inland for a change — to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Tenerife and the incredible Teide National Park. What started as a surprise shout from shore turned into a heartwarming connection with Alberto, one of our viewers, who invited us to spend a day exploring his island. Together, we ventured up towards Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain, through ever-changing scenery and clouds rolling over the volcanic slopes. It’s a story about human connection and how meeting people while traveling can turn an ordinary day into something unforgettable. We are a sailing couple living on our Hallberg Rassy Rasmus sailboat, documenting our journey from the Mediterranean, along the coast of Morocco, and now through the Canary Islands. Our life on the water is about more than sailing — it’s about curiosity, connection, and embracing this alternative lifestyle. Now that summer is coming to a close, it’s time for us to start winterizing our homebuilt wooden sailboat for the cold weather to come. Over-wintering in Newfoundland—on a sailboat, nonetheless—is a bold move, and one that we need to prepare for. As the temps drop, condensation in the boat is becoming a bit of a problem. It’s time to close up the portholes. Armed with a piece of cedar board and small hammer, I make my way from portfolio to portfolio, removing each screen as I go. Then, it’s time for some weatherstripping. This will help with the condensation. I tackle the project along with my trusty heat gun. This will be a nice solution until we get the boat shrink-wrapped in another few weeks. Another project is laying our Code Zero out to dry, and then packing it up and storing it properly for the winter. Filling our water tanks could become an issue this winter with how cold the Newfoundland weather can be. I have an idea for how to make filling our tanks easier and more accessible…I just need to make a quick run to the hardware store for supplies. The water will get shut off at the docks soon, but since we’re so close to the marina clubhouse, we can run a hose from the building to the boat with ease. Then, my new additions to our water tanks should make filling up easier (and faster) than ever. Now that we have a better system for filling up our water tanks, winterizing our Spectra water-maker is next on the boat work list. I flush the system, following the instructions in the manual. With the harbor expected to freeze over for the winter, we won’t be making much water. Better to take the water-maker offline completely and stored properly. As if I didn’t have enough boat work on my to-do list, Robin caught diesel fuel leaking from the overflow valve on our Dickinson Newport diesel heater. Fortunately, I can stand in as a diesel tech for the day. I think something inside the valve assembly might be stuck. There are a lot of parts and springs, but we’re going to crack into it, take it apart, and get the diesel overflow to stop dripping one way or another. Eventually, we get the heater back into tip-top shape. After all this hard work, we decided to take a day off to mosey along a highly-recommended foliage drive. The drive starts in Cox’s Cove and travels along dirt roads all the way back to Corner Brook. The foliage was at peak, and the forest looked like a celebration. It was the perfect wind-down to a week of hard work winterizing Arabella. -------------------------- Episode #366 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! What started as a crazy idea 3 months ago has finally come to life — we decided to cover our boat in as much solar power as possible! ⚡☀️ In this video, we take you behind the scenes as we design, fabricate, and install a massive custom stainless-steel solar arch that holds 2,360 watts of bi-facial solar panels. From the first measurements to the final bolt, this was one of the biggest projects we’ve ever tackled. Huge thanks to Alex from Marine Structures for making our wild idea a reality. The result? More power, more shade, and a boat that’s almost ready for off-grid living. 🌊⚓ Marine Structures (754) 273-0895 Mike's Yacht Service's (772) 214-7153 Timestamps 0:00 Intro 0:16 The origin story 1:14 Pre drilling the panels 4:59 INSTALL DAY 7:19 Raising the arch 11:36 Welding 12:56 Putting the panels on FOLLOW US ON SOCIALS❤️⛵️ Insta - https://www.instagram.com/sailingzola/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064845617659 #Sailing #Catamaran #Bahamas #BoatLife #SolarPower #DIYBoatBuild #OffGridLiving #TinyLiving #MarineSolar #VanLifeOnWater

Another day grinding it out in this yacht life in the Wrangell, Alaska shipyard. We are here with our 80-foot, triple masted, steel schooner - Alaskan Gypsy. The time finally came to face it - cutting open the hull to remove a corroded section of plating under the head and water tank. Years of mystery fluid (you don't want to know what that was) and pooled up above the longitudinal supports and caused significant rust corrosion. This combined with the electrolysis attacking from outside made for some concern regarding the plate integrity in this area. In this video I crawl inside the boat to prep, measure, and fire up the plasma cutter, cut off wheels, and whatever other power tools I can get my hands on. It’s loud, gritty, and strangely satisfying — real slow-TV shipyard life from inside and outside the hull. In this episode: • preparing the work by removing the plywood floor • uncovering hidden corrosion behind stringers • wiring and testing the plasma cutter • cutting out the damaged hull section • beating on our steel hull with a hammer relentlessly • inspecting the steel and planning replacement plate Subscribe to follow the full Alaskan Gypsy rebuild — welding, sandblasting, painting, and life in the Wrangell shipyard as we restore her for new adventures on Alaska’s coast. We’ll cover: Why Mast Steps are Safer (especially when sailing solo or shorthanded). The Massive Time Savings on routine rigging checks and maintenance. Somewhere in the early 1990s, a creative boat builder decided to build a DIY hydraulic bow thruster system using a pacer pump, a Micro-Commander valve setup, and a lot of determination. Fast-forward a few decades, and I’m in the Wrangell, Alaska shipyard trying to figure out how it ever worked - or if it ever really did!? I heard the pump turned, and maybe it moved the bow, but nobody is for sure. . . In this episode aboard our 80’ steel schooner Alaskan Gypsy: • exploring the bow compartment and old hydraulic plumbing • finding 1,600 pounds of poured lead ballast • freeing seized fittings and tracing mystery hoses • trying to understand this “innovative” 90s thruster idea • deciding whether to rebuild, replace, or retire it for good • watching paint burn and trying not to breath too much of it • yelling at my dad through 5/16" steel plate A respectful look at someone’s ambitious DIY project that might’ve been ahead of its time… or just a little off target. Subscribe for more real-world shipyard projects as we rebuild Alaskan Gypsy — welding, sandblasting, and restoring her for life back on Alaska’s wild waters. ⸻ 📑 Chapters 00:00 – Demoing more in the bathroom/head 00:30 – Inside the Bow Compartment 02:00 – Discovering the Hydraulic System 04:00 – Lead Ballast and Leverage 06:00 – Breaking Free the Seized Fittings 08:00 – Trying to Decode the 1990s Setup 10:30 – The “Innovation” That Maybe Worked 12:30 – Options for Modern Refit 14:30 – Wrap-Up: Keep It or Cut It
