In this episode of Sailing Doodles, I’m trying to get Nauti Dogs ready to finally go sailing, but there’s still a long list of jobs to knock out first. I investigate the engine alarm that went off right after launch, replace the alternator belt, and track down a frustrating water leak buried in one of the worst possible places on the boat. Fixing that leak meant crawling upside down and backwards into an incredibly tight space — definitely one of the more claustrophobic repairs I’ve done on this boat. There’s plenty more maintenance, troubleshooting, and last-minute preparation as I get everything ready for the next leg of the adventure. After five nonstop days sailing from Newfoundland to Maine, Arabella is finally back in the United States—and almost immediately, she's coming back out of the water. This week's episode begins with the final leg of our offshore passage from Newfoundland. Steve and Felix find everything from light winds to 25 knots as they work their way around Nova Scotia, across the Gulf of Maine, and toward Rockland. After a year in Canadian waters, Arabella crosses back into the United States and reaches Maine just in time for Steve to make it home for his grandfather's memorial service. Then it's time for another haul out—and a boat project Steve hoped he wouldn't have to tackle again. Arabella's antifouling bottom paint is failing on the oak planking below the waterline. So for the third time, Steve begins the painstaking process of removing the bottom paint, this time stripping the hull completely back to bare wood. He explains why he believes the oak is causing the adhesion problem, why previous attempts haven't lasted, and the new primer system he hopes will finally solve it. After roughly eight days of chemical stripping, scraping, and sanding, there's at least some very good news: beneath the paint, Arabella's 3½-year-old oak planking, seams, bungs, and scarf joints look remarkably good. Today I pull apart (or attempt to!) remove the heat exchanger tube bundles for service and while doing so discovered some severe damage requiring housing replacement alongside tube bundle servicing/replacement. While the tube bundles can be pricey, the housings are even more pricey, so you really don't want to wait so long that they are destroyed too! Para fazer um diagnóstico preciso e fugir do "achômetro", usei pela primeira vez um medidor de umidade para identificar os pontos exatos que precisavam de tratamento. Com o casco aberto, o desafio era secar tudo — uma tarefa difícil em Antonina, onde a umidade do ar é uma constante. A solução foi construir uma mini estufa em volta do barco, usando plástico para criar um efeito que acelerasse a secagem. O processo foi manual e detalhado: secador de cabelo, limpeza com acetona e a aplicação de uma massa de epóxi com microsferas de vidro para fechar cada ponto tratado. No começo, a falta de prática com a massa epóxi trouxe frustração. "Eu dormi meio mal pensando: isso vai ser difícil". Mas, como em outras etapas da reforma, a persistência levou ao aprendizado e a uma satisfação enorme. Our very first sail began with crossing Caernarfon Bar in force 6 gusting 7, followed by a close-hauled sail across Cardigan Bay to Porth Dinllaen. Our DIY electric motor powered by Fogstar batteries, got us through the rough bar crossing and then against force 6, breaking seas and tide into Porth Dinllean bay. For the sail we used a double reefed main and our staysail. That seemed about right. First time either has been used. We got breaking seas on deck, including covering the wheelhouse (we are very glad we have that). Delighted with the performance of Vida (1977 Rival 38, Centre Cockpit Ketch). Classic wooden sailboat restoration, liveaboard life and the Victoria Classic Boat Show — we're getting W. Grebe ready for winter and making plans to bring her to Victoria next year. A visit to the Victoria Classic Boat Show gave Mary and me an idea. Walking among those beautifully maintained wooden boats, I couldn't help thinking about Grebe — our classic gaff-rigged wooden sailboat and, once again, our home for the winter. I'd like to sail Grebe into Victoria next year and enter her in the Classic Boat Show. There's just one problem. She's not ready. In this episode I take a good, critical look around Grebe at some of the work that still needs to be done. Some of it is cosmetic. Some of it is ordinary maintenance. And some of it is simply what happens when an old wooden boat isn't a museum piece — she's a boat we actually live aboard and sail. But this episode isn't all work. Fall has arrived at Port Browning on Pender Island, British Columbia, and the marina is changing with it. The summer boats are disappearing, the colours are changing, the temperature is dropping, and Grebe is slowly becoming our winter home again. There's projects to finish, and a long list of jobs ahead of us. Over the coming year, I hope to work my way through that list and get Grebe ready to take her place alongside some of the beautiful classic boats we saw in Victoria. And in the meantime, winter is coming. Water in the engine room… and a lot more of it than we'd like to see! In this episode, Timo investigates a leak on our former Vendée Globe Open 66 and tries to work out where the water is coming from. Just over a year ago, we replaced our original Volvo engine with a more powerful Nanni, which meant designing and laminating a completely new engine bed. So when water started appearing in the engine room, we had to find out whether something had gone wrong with the engine installation. Timo shows how to determine whether a leak is salt water or fresh water, how to trace a leak back to its source, and eventually discovers the culprit: the siphon break. With Vika away in Guatemala for a few months, I’ve got plenty to keep me busy aboard KAIA — from servicing the Yamaha 10hp dinghy outboard and both Yanmar 4JH4 diesel engines, to stripping down the Yanmar winches and servicing the Quick anchor windlass. But the biggest project is just getting started… Down at the local boatyard, we begin work on a custom-built fibreglass hardtop for KAIA, made by local craftsmen in Tunisia. And, because this is Tunisia, there’s always time to take a break for some local food along the way. Lots of boat jobs, a few big upgrades, and the beginning of one of KAIA’s biggest modifications yet. Things get pretty wild in Solomons, Maryland as I check out the local boat docking races, where crab boat captains race against the clock to slam their boats into the dock as fast as possible. After the races, it’s back to my old CT56, Nauti Dogs. She’s been sitting on the hard for over a year, and there’s a long list of jobs to finish before she can finally go back in the water. In this episode I keep working through the repairs, maintenance, cleaning and last-minute projects as I get her ready to sail again. We were sailing downwind along the centre of the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC), with commercial ships passing on either side of us. Despite the conditions, we had our full spinnaker up, making the most of the wind as we headed towards Djibouti. But our biggest concern wasn't simply the sailing. As a cruising yacht without armed guards, with relatively slow speed, low freeboard and no barbed wire, we were considered a high-risk vessel for this passage. That meant keeping a constant watch on our surroundings and carefully considering every decision we made. As we approached the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another problem became increasingly important: the wind. The wind can funnel through the Bab el-Mandeb and be significantly stronger than the forecast, making the decision to continue north or wait in Djibouti far from straightforward. We had to decide whether to turn towards the Bab el-Mandeb or stop in Djibouti and wait for better conditions. In the end, we chose Djibouti. Leaving the transit corridor meant sailing extremely close to the Somali coast. As we left the corridor, we turned off our AIS and navigation lights as part of the security measures we had chosen for our passage. This episode gives you a real look at what it was like to sail a small cruising yacht through one of the world's most challenging maritime regions — from Socotra to Djibouti, across the Gulf of Aden, and towards the Bab el-Mandeb. In this episode, Tim sits down with Simon Phillips, owner of Discovery 67 SAPPHIRE II, to look back on an extraordinary circumnavigation that ultimately saw the yacht cover around 47,000 nautical miles during Simon’s ownership. The adventure began with a dream familiar to many sailors: to sail around the world. After buying SAPPHIRE II, Simon and his family prepared the yacht for serious bluewater cruising before setting off to join the World ARC. What followed was an adventure across oceans, through some of the world’s most spectacular cruising grounds, and ultimately far beyond the original itinerary. Then COVID arrived. With borders closing and the organised rally disrupted, plans had to change dramatically. Rather than ending the adventure, however, the interruption ultimately transformed it. The pressure of keeping to the World ARC schedule disappeared, allowing Simon and his family to slow down, change their route and spend considerably longer exploring the places they had sailed so far to reach. Simon talks about passages through the Galápagos and French Polynesia, time in New Zealand and Fiji, cruising the Whitsundays, and continuing through Indonesia, Mauritius and South Africa as SAPPHIRE II gradually worked her way around the planet.  Along the way, Tim and Simon discuss the realities behind a voyage of this scale: preparing a yacht for ocean sailing, managing maintenance thousands of miles from home, finding parts and expertise in remote locations, dealing with weather and making the decisions that keep both yacht and crew safe. SAPPHIRE II herself is a major part of the story. The Discovery 67 was designed as a serious bluewater cruising yacht, combining the space and comfort needed for extended periods aboard with the capability to undertake long ocean passages. After tens of thousands of miles, Simon reflects on what worked, what he learned about the yacht and the equipment aboard, and what he would do differently if he were preparing to leave again. But perhaps the biggest lesson from the circumnavigation has little to do with equipment. Simon’s advice to anyone dreaming of doing something similar is simple: don’t rush it. A circumnavigation can easily become a succession of deadlines and ocean passages, when the real reward lies in having the time to stop, explore and experience the extraordinary places along the way. As Simon puts it, “You’re never going to do this again… take your time and enjoy it.”  From ambitious plans and unexpected interruptions to remote islands, ocean crossings and 47,000 nautical miles aboard SAPPHIRE II, this is the story of what happens when you stop dreaming about sailing around the world – and actually go.

In D-Log 310, I tackle two problems with our caravan: a Dometic RM1270 fridge that had stopped working and an external fresh-water pump that appears to have been damaged after running dry. The Dometic caravan fridge had developed a couple of faults. When switched to 230V electric, it would trip the shore-power supply at the house, and when I tried running it on LPG gas, it wouldn't light. After ringing around caravan repair companies, the cheapest quote I received was around £240. So before booking it in, I did some research and decided to carry out some fault finding myself. In the video I explain how I diagnosed the electrical problem, including resistance checks with a multimeter, before removing the Dometic RM1270 fridge from the caravan and replacing the 230V heating element. While the fridge was out, I also cleaned the gas burner and burner area, which sorted the gas problem. The result? The fridge is now working again on both 230V electric and gas. ⚡ IMPORTANT: Caravan mains electricity and LPG gas can be dangerous. This video shows what I did to my own caravan and isn't a substitute for professional advice. If you're not competent and confident working with 230V electrical systems or LPG appliances, use a suitably qualified technician. Always isolate electrical supplies before carrying out resistance tests. There was also another caravan problem to sort out – no fresh water. The external water pump appears to have been allowed to run dry and damaged internally. As a temporary fix, I removed the working water pump from our camper van/motorhome and fitted it to the caravan, getting the water system working again. So that's two caravan repairs in one day – a Dometic fridge repair and a caravan fresh-water pump replacement. If you're having problems with a Dometic RM1270 caravan fridge, your caravan fridge is tripping the electric, it works on neither electric nor gas, or your caravan water pump has stopped working, hopefully my experience gives you some useful pointers for diagnosing the problem.
