A beautiful, easy passage into the Exumas ends with Dark Angel threading her way through shallow water, coral and rocks. We cruise from Long Island to Hog Cay Cut in the Exumas. Dave pulls the new port engine raw water pump to track down an oil leak and discovers the supplied O-ring was oversized, crushed and damaged. An O-ring salvaged from the old pump gets us back together. We raise the main and genoa hoping for enough wind to sail the 16-hour passage, but spend most of it motor sailing through calm seas and absolutely gorgeous water. Hog Cay Cut is a very different kind of beautiful. Arriving a couple of hours after high tide means I am on the bow watching the shallow water for coral and rocks as we thread Dark Angel through the narrow cut. This is how we repaired our damper plate on our Volvo Penta MD2030. We discovered it was damaged when we removed it to change the rear oil seal during the engine rebuild. It was made by a company called Centaflex and we found the correct spares by referencing the number found on the coupling. It was a straightforward DIY job... Do I have medical insurance? No, I don't. So what do I do in case of an incident? Like on a motorcycle taxi where I got burned on the exhaust pipe which turned into a very nasty infection. I went to see a doctor who checked me out and prescribed a strong treatment. That nasty infection kept me confined to the boat with antibiotics and rest, but soon it was time to get back to business. In this episode, I break my vow to never ride a motorbike again because necessity calls. I needed cash from the ATM and a few items at the giant China Mall. Then ticking the last items off the repair list, we are making progress. Watch as Diego measures and fits new battens for my main sails, patching up the old beat-up one to serve as a spare while we install a "new used" replacement. A huge shout-out to Pape, a proper sailor and skilled rigger who just returned from delivering a boat to The Gambia. He’s helping us tackle the rigging, installing a new wind transducer up the mast. Me, I'm ensuring the diesel engine is fed—now that I finally have a working fuel gauge to prevent running dry mid-ocean. However, being here during rain season comes with challenges. The water levels on the Bay of Green Bay and Lake Michigan are up this Summer thanks to some historic snowfalls in early April and some major rainstorms in late April and early May. The water levels are about 9 inches to a foot higher than last Summer. There are also NO WEEDS in the Marina this Summer. Thanks for watching. Real nasty...yep, that was Isabella’s deck before washing. Now it’s sparkling clean after a good scrubbing. Burmese teak is getting harder and harder to find these days and luckily we happen to have a piece onboard. Steve uses a hole saw bit to cut a base for our new Garmin weather antenna. The wood is so tough that it broke the drill bit. Karen keeps her fingers crossed as the drill continues to kick and cut; hoping that it doesn’t slice any part of Steve as it bores through the wood. The drilling made a nice base and some teak dust that we collected for later use. After applying polyurethane and connecting the antenna base with silicone we attached it in the cockpit where the antenna has a clear view of the sky. It’s now ready for action. Hooray!!!! We are putting in a helm chair. The Tempress ProBax will make our cruise from Georgia to Texas so much more comfortable. It’s orthopedic, it swivels, it’s attractive, it has a removable support pole and we are really looking forward to this addition to Isabella. The cockpit floor will also have some upgrades. We are on S/V Isabella a Super Mikado 56 manufactured in France by C.N.S.O. (Constructions Nautiques du Sud-Ouest). Isabella is a sailing ketch and is considered a 1990/2010 model. It has four private cabins, an engine room, salon, galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. The hull is fiberglass and is considered a bluewater cruiser. Isabella has an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin / Raymarine electronics and has hydraulic steering. The naval architect was Michel Bigoin who also designed the largest sailboat in the world which was manufactured in 1976 and called Phocea. It was a 246 foot four masted steel schooner and was considered the largest private sailing yacht in the world until 2004. How much can you really save by importing boat equipment directly from China? For our refit of ROAM, we decided to look beyond traditional marine suppliers and source a number of major components directly from Chinese manufacturers. The results were far more significant than we expected. For the specific products discussed in this video, we spent approximately $50,000 on equipment that would have cost roughly $150,000 through the U.S. sources we compared, representing more than $92,000 in savings. But saving money wasn’t the only consideration. In this episode, we break down exactly what we bought, what we paid, what comparable equipment cost in the U.S., and—perhaps most importantly—what it actually took to source these products ourselves. We discuss: 🛶 Our custom dinghy — including the specifications and customizations that made a direct-from-the-manufacturer purchase possible. 🔋 Our lithium battery cells — the foundation of our massive DIY house battery bank and one of the biggest opportunities for savings. ❄️ Air conditioning systems — including the challenges of comparing different BTU capacities and configurations when an exact like-for-like product isn’t available. ⚓ Windlass — comparing the equipment itself as well as the challenges of finding the correct marine hardware. 🔩 Custom turnbuckles — including one of the biggest lessons we learned about buying from overseas: getting exactly what you need can take time, patience, and very detailed specifications. 💡 Marine lighting — comparing quality, specifications, and pricing. ⚡ Electrical connectors and components — another category where buying directly from the manufacturer can produce substantial savings. We also talk honestly about the tradeoff between money and time. Buying directly from China isn’t as simple as clicking “buy.” You have to find manufacturers, communicate specifications, compare products, verify quality, understand certifications and materials, negotiate pricing, arrange shipping, and sometimes wait much longer than you would for something sitting on a U.S. dealer’s shelf. And when something goes wrong, returning it isn’t as easy as taking it back to the local marine supply store. So was it worth it? For us, absolutely—but there were some important caveats. One of the biggest misconceptions we want to address is the idea that “Made in China” automatically means cheap or poor quality. China manufactures everything from inexpensive consumer products to extremely sophisticated, high-quality industrial and marine equipment. The country of manufacture tells you very little about the quality by itself. The real challenge is finding the right manufacturer, the right product, and the right quality level. For everything we discuss in this video, quality was a major priority. We weren’t looking for the cheapest possible option. We were looking for equipment that met our specifications and was comparable to—or in several cases better than—the alternatives we found through U.S. suppliers. At the time, she was listed for $48,000. Today, she belongs to Save The Day Jay. And Jay didn't pay $48,000. He paid $15,000. There's a lesson in that: Don't ask, don't get. But there's another lesson that's every bit as important when buying an older sailboat: Know what you're buying—and know your own limits. Fortunately, Jay knows his way around boats. BoatFools viewers may recognize him as the guy who helped save our asses this spring when we were scrambling to get our boats ready for the charter season. Around here, he's become known as Save The Day Jay, and now he's taking on a much bigger project of his own. Jay is refitting Southern Cross 39 Hull #1 with plans to head south for the winter, and in this episode we're going back aboard to see what $15,000 bought him, what he's discovered, what he's fixing, and what it's really going to take to bring this classic bluewater cruiser back to life. The Southern Cross 39 was designed by renowned naval architect Thomas Gillmer, who also designed the Allied Seawind—the first fiberglass sailboat to circumnavigate the globe. Hull #1 was built by C.E. Ryder in Rhode Island in 1981 and, importantly, was factory finished; many Southern Cross sailboats were sold as kits for owner completion. Her construction was noteworthy for the era, with a closed-cell Airex-cored fiberglass hull, a technique C.E. Ryder became well known for, along with balsa-cored decks. When we first toured her three years ago, we saw a serious cruising boat with an impressive pedigree that needed work. Today, we're seeing what happens when the right buyer looks beyond the cosmetics, makes an offer—and then has the skills, time and determination to deal with what comes next. Because a $15,000 bluewater sailboat can be an incredible opportunity. It can also become a very expensive lesson if you don't understand what you're getting into. Don't ask, don't get. The series follows me, a woman in her mid-40s, as I try to understand what I’m looking for, explore very different historic boats and eventually find Anna Maria, a 21-metre Dutch tjalk built in 1913. After buying her, I have to learn how to handle this massive old canal boat and bring her through the narrow waterways, bridges and locks of the Netherlands to Germany. Anna Maria was converted into a liveaboard barge in the 1970s, and I originally believed I could keep much of her existing interior. But as more and more problems reveal themselves, that plan begins to unravel and I make the slightly terrifying decision to tear everything apart and take on an enormous DIY boat refit. After 3 years of service Steve makes a big change to the rudder head taking off the bronze hardware and replacing it with a more traditional wooden setup. Not too much bronze has been removed from Arabella (fortunately!), but this change will make steering much more pleasant. Then the crew makes one of their last bushwhacks back to the massive cliff known as The Nuddick to continue trying to establish some sport climbing routes. In Episode 29 of UK Sailmakers' Lessons Learned podcast, host Buttons Padin talks with Ceris and Paul Arns about Obsession, the Mark Mills designed MAT 1245 they campaign out of Western Australia. Ceris and Paul are the poster children for a husband and wife team fully committed to a racing program. "We're just committed to racing Obsession. If the boat is not used, we feel bad," Ceris noted. That commitment has paid off with back to back Ocean Racing Western Australian Championships and a long list of major wins. They trace their path from New Zealand to WA, coming back to sailing after raising a family, and building a crew culture that Ceris describes as "as much a family as we are a crew of good sailors." Paul credits three things for the results: seamanship and boat management, disciplined maintenance and sail upgrades, and strong team leadership from Geoff Bishop, owner of UK Sailmakers Fremantle. "We discussed our sail inventory, and we went entirely with UK Sailmakers' recommendations. We were a test platform for UK's new Integrated Structural Luff technology, and ISL, like all our UK sails, just plain works!" 🦜 Dear diary… welcome back! In this episode, my humans decide it’s finally time to tackle my hull… and honestly, I’ve never looked worse! 😩 What started as “just a bit of sanding” turned into rust, bare metal, barnacles, old paint, epoxy, wire brushes and A LOT of Graham suffering. Watch as they slowly strip me back, uncover my many colourful layers from over the years, repair the rust and finally start getting me ready for a whole new look. At one point Graham even looked like a blue Smurf. I found it hilarious. 😂 And yes… with hindsight, perhaps sandblasting me back to bare metal from the start would have been the quicker option. But hindsight is a wonderful thing, isn't it? Most importantly, we're still trying to uncover my history and find my original owners.
