Since arriving in Greece the bridge (barge that moves out of the way at set times to allow boats through) has been closed due to maintenance. The fix? Send down a car ferry to sit between the island and mainland. With the re-opening scheduled for today, we planned our last nights stay for closer. Unfortunately for us, it did not go as planned which meant we had to take the long way round. Fortunately though, we were met with some beautiful scenes and had a safe passage up. We make it to Preveza and stayed 2 nights, before we move to the beautiful Paxos in our next episode. Want early access to our videos? A sailboat can either become a tool for freedom… Or just another system, competing for your time, money and attention. The real cost of boat ownership is not only found in marina fees, maintenance cost, fuel, insurance or depreciation. Sometimes it’s hidden in complexity itself. In this video, I explore why some sailors are quietly moving towards simpler boats with lower overhead, for more financial freedom and more time spent sailing. Keep your money invested and working for you. Keep it simple and keep it sailing. I hope you enjoy this video. Thanks for stopping by. I can be reached directly at: smallsailboatbigwater@gmail.com

Turas Mara is a 2025 Bali 4.8 catamaran in the 5-cabin layout. The boat has been privately owned since launch and has never operated in a charter program, which is unusual for a one-year-old Bali 4.8 of this configuration. 0:00 - A 2025 Bali 4.8 That Was Never Chartered 1:27 - Inside the Salon, Galley, and Nav Station 3:44 - The 5-Cabin Layout Walkthrough 5:21 - Aft Deck, Walker Bay Dinghy, and Third Cabin 6:33 - Flybridge, Helm, and Sailing Setup 8:52 - Owner Upgrades: Solar, Starlink, and More 10:27 - Why the Bali Solid Foredeck Design Matters 12:19 - How the Tilting Bali Door Works Check out the Listing Here: https://catamaranguru.com/yacht-details/?id=86184&title=48-ft-bali-2025-4-8-turas-mara-hollywood-florida-united-states-yacht-for-sale&vessel=2849500&utm_source=youtube&utm_campaign=Bali&utm_content=TurasMara In this walkthrough, Steele Greyling covers the boat's history, the 5-cabin layout, the owner-installed equipment, and the Bali design features that distinguish the 4.8 in the cruising catamaran market. The Bali 4.8 is a 48-foot cruising catamaran designed by naval architect Xavier Faÿ and built by Chantier Catana (Catana Group) in La Rochelle, France. It first launched in 2020 and is offered in 3, 4, 5, or 6-cabin configurations. The boat measures 48 feet 9 inches in length overall, 25 feet 10 inches in beam, 4 feet 5 inches in draft, with a mast height of 76 feet. Standard fuel and water capacity are 264 US gallons each. The Bali 4.8 is rated CE Category A (Ocean) for up to 14 persons. Why does a never-chartered Bali 4.8 cost more than a charter version? A catamaran that has operated in charter has different wear patterns than a privately owned boat. Charter operations prioritize fast guest turnaround, which means systems are used heavily and maintenance is reactive. Private ownership produces the opposite pattern: lighter use, proactive maintenance, and upgrades selected for long-term cruising rather than charter compliance. For Bali 4.8 buyers, that difference shows up in resale value, condition of finishes, and the quality of aftermarket equipment. A privately owned, never-chartered Bali 4.8 typically commands a premium of 10 to 20 percent over a charter-fleet sister of the same year and layout. What does the 5-cabin Bali 4.8 layout include? The 5-cabin layout features a full master suite on the starboard hull with a separate head and shower, a forward starboard cabin with a walk-around queen bed, and three port-side cabins including a midship double-bunk that doubles as a pantry or crew cabin. Every cabin has its own head and shower. The salon includes a fixed table with integrated bar storage, a daybed conversion, and the signature Bali tilting door that opens the salon to the cockpit. What upgrades did the previous owner add to Turas Mara? Owner-installed equipment on Turas Mara includes an aftermarket Bosch dishwasher, a Breville countertop oven, a tabletop wine cooler, an American-style fridge with ice maker and water dispenser, Starlink connectivity, five factory walk-on solar panels, a Walker Bay 11-foot dinghy with 30 horsepower Tohatsu outboard and upgraded davit system, a removable foredeck barbecue, custom shades on the salon and foredeck windows, and aftermarket Victron battery management. The electronics package is full Raymarine with chart plotter and remote autopilot control. Why does the Bali 4.8 use a solid foredeck instead of trampolines? The Bali 4.8 is built around a solid foredeck rather than the trampolines used on most cruising catamarans. The solid foredeck adds buoyancy at the bow, reduces water spray under way, eliminates the long-term maintenance burden of trampoline replacement, and creates a usable forward living space. Combined with the signature tilting salon door, the 4.8 delivers an indoor-outdoor flow that distinguishes it from other 48-foot cruising catamarans. Both design features affect resale value when the boat is eventually sold. Is the Bali 4.8 easy to sail single-handed? Yes. The Bali 4.8 is set up for single-handed or two-person operation. All halyards, reef lines, and sheets are led aft to the helm position on the flybridge. Two electric winches (top and aft) allow the helmsman to handle sail trim without leaving the helm. The single-helm flybridge provides three-corner visibility around the boat, which makes maneuvering and docking comparable to a smaller catamaran despite the 48-foot length. Join me for a beautiful, calm day aboard Mirage, anchored near Spanish Wells, Eleuthera Island, Bahamas. The water was crystal clear, the sea was flat, and the sun made it a perfect day to enjoy life on a boat. In this episode, I show what a normal day looks like while living aboard: an early morning swim, exercise, water quality tests, breakfast, office work, boat maintenance, a visit to Spanish Wells, cooking dinner, sunset, an audiobook, a little TV, stargazing, and finally - goodnight from Mirage. Life on a sailboat is not always about big passages and storms. Sometimes it is about peaceful mornings, simple routines, clear water, and quiet evenings under the stars. After 10 years of ownership, the time has come to hand over the keys to a new crew for their turn to experience the adventure of a lifetime with this amazing vessel! This well known Beneteau 45f5 was custom built in St. Hilaire France to the highest standards, personally overseen by Mdme Beneteau-Roux. The Bruce Farr design matched with the Pininfarina interior is just as stunning today as it was the day this much anticipated boat was launched in English Bay for her original owner. The 2 cabin 2 head layout is luxurious, finished with hand-stitched leather accents, Carrara marble and the signature Beneteau curves that show off the master craftmanship throughout. Topsides the smooth decks and clean lines are classic Beneteau, custom modified in the factory for PNW sailing. The newer custom mast and rig with Forespar Leisure Furl in-boom furling for the Main is a dream to handle either single handed or fully crewed. Sailing this boat is an absolute thrill that never fails to delight and with a PHRF rating of 81, Northern Girl remains the ultimate performance-cruising combination as shown in her recent race result at Southern Straits 2026. Dry stored for the winter for the majority of her lifetime, this boat has been well maintained by her owner who is well versed in marine maintenance. Complete maintenance records are available but a few of the recent upgrades include: New teak decks (2018) (no screw holes!) New starter with relay (2025) New domestic water pump (2025) New hot water tank and lines (2025) Main & Genoa serviced by North Sails (2025): new head & bolt line on Main, UV cover on Genoa New engine thru-hull (2026) Professionally bottom painted (2026) Rig inspected and tuned (2026) New Raymarine digital GPS and Radar with AIS (2026) Surveyed in 2023, Northern Girl is available with assumable moorage in a 50’ deep water slip with the potential for live-aboard privileges at our Westport Marina in Sidney. Available to view by appointment only, please contact our Vancouver Island Sales Office at 250-656-5832 for more information or to schedule a showing.

We’ve officially entered full Pacific prep mode 🌊 In this episode, we spend the day hunting down everything we need to get Escapade ready for another ocean crossing and life in remote destinations far from civilisation. From safety gear and spare parts to haul out supplies, off-grid essentials, tools, maintenance gear and everyday living items… the boat is quickly turning into a floating warehouse again 😅 With another major passage on the horizon, we’re trying to think ahead and prepare for the reality of cruising in places where chandlery stores, Amazon deliveries and easy repairs simply don’t exist. Which means stocking up now… before we leave. We also start getting organised for our upcoming haul out, tackle jobs around the boat and share some of the gear and upgrades we think will make life safer and easier out at sea. ⚓️ Thanks for following along with our journey aboard Escapade. What could have been a setback turned into a unique family experience, as we slowly sailed between idyllic atolls, adapting to a simpler, more hands-on way of life while waiting for essential spare parts to arrive. Despite the challenge, we embraced every moment. One of the highlights of our time was celebrating Yewan’s birthday in the most extraordinary way—snorkelling over a mysterious shipwreck, a vessel with a history as layered as the ocean itself, having changed names several times over the years. Gliding above its remains in crystal-clear waters made for a birthday none of us will ever forget. We discovered a charming spot to enjoy pizza, and explored small local shops in search of supplies. Reprovisioning became an adventure of its own, as we sourced fresh produce from a nearby farm and made do with what was available, learning to be resourceful along the way. When the long-awaited spare parts finally arrived, it marked a turning point in our journey. Together as a family, we worked side by side to repair the steering system, transforming a technical challenge into a shared achievement. With everything back in working order, we completed our final preparations—refilling our water tanks, refuelling, and getting ready for the next leg of our voyage. This experience of sailing around the Maldives with an emergency tiller wasn’t just about overcoming obstacles—it was about resilience, family teamwork, and discovering the beauty of slowing down in one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations. --- MUSIC CREDITS: Music by: https://www.bensound.com License code: B79AYU6ZLYQAENT7 Artist: : Benjamin Tissot Music by: Bensound License code: K10OWWQIU4IFACM0 Artist: : Benjamin Tissot --- 💙 SUPPORT OUR CHANNELS: A big THANK-YOU to our MOTHERSHIP PATREON family who make these videos possible. Over the last 18 months, we've been getting our canal boat prepared, all the while writing a book! We're now ready to begin our journey from Yorkshire to the Fens via the tidal Trent and out into the Wash. Are we and the boat ready for this big trip? After finding a leak in the engine bay, it seems there are more maintenance jobs to undertake, but we won't let this stop us from slipping the lines and getting our toes wet once more. We give a little overview of our proposed journey, which takes us onto the River Trent. It's tidal and meandering, and we've never taken a canal boat onto this type of body of water. But before we can even get there, we have to wait until a few repairs have been completed on the Stainforth and Keady Canal, including that pesky railway bridge that seems to go out of action every other day! I thought this would be a straightforward job… swap out the old freshwater pump and fit a new one. It wasn’t. The new pump looked identical, but the quick-fit connectors were just slightly different — enough that nothing would fit. So instead of a simple replacement, this turned into something else entirely… A proper “Franken pump” build using parts from both the old and new units. Along the way, I also explain: • How a boat’s pressurised water system works • How multi-diaphragm pumps actually move water • Why small differences in fittings can cause big problems If you’re working on your own boat systems, this one might save you a bit of head scratching. 👍 If you found it useful, give it a like — it really helps the channel 🔔 And subscribe if you want to follow along with more real-world boat fixes Support the channel / early ad-free access: 👉 https://www.patreon.com/svimpavidus #boatmaintenance #boatrepair #liveaboard #sailinglife #diyboat Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid XX 🇬🇧 ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️ =================================================== 👋 We’re Ant & Cid aboard SV Impavidus – two adventurers sailing full-time since 2018. DIY easy docking, dolphins, dancing, generator woes, and tall ship It’s a real stretch to reach dock lines when coming into our slip. Solution...build an extension to the dock steps for easier line retrieval. We attached a piece of 2 X 4 to the step handle that can swivel out over the edge of the dock. Before going out, a dock line is hung over the extension. It is so much easier to hook that line; if only catching a fish was as easy. Our day sail had to be cut short. Just as we were about to raise the sail a noise from the engine room caught our attention. Some of the screws on the engine shroud were rattling and coming loose. That was not acceptable, no sailing and back to dock we had to go. Not all was lost as there were several dolphins nearby swimming and gliding effortlessly in the water. Gotta love those dolphins! During a land trip we were lucky to catch a USCG tall ship, the Barque Eagle. She was in dock and available for a quick tour. The vessel appears to be steel hulled, is 295 feet in length and was built in 1936. The US Coast Guard uses her for training and she carries a crew of about 50 when out at sea. It’s always a thrill to be able to go onboard such a huge boat. After much diagnosing and replacing parts, our generator still fails to run without the glow plug being constantly energized on startup. So...it’s time to call in a professional for assistance. We will keep you posted as to how that goes in an upcoming episode. Still having fun living on Isabella. Karen dances all over the deck and both she and Steve do a bit of Tai Chi. Boat life is different, sometimes challenging, sometimes peaceful and always changing. Huge hugs and kisses to our subscribers and viewers. We address a some of your comments and questions. My brother Toby and his wife Tara live on a 10m Kerr Catamaran. It's been out of the water for a few months getting some upgrades and general maintenance done but now it's time to splash her again. Tobyy is very much into saving money where he can so he figured the best way to get the boat back in the water was to do it all DIY style. Using our older brothers trucks and sons and a rented crane he made a pretty big project seem easy. About three hours was all that was needed to get the boat from where it had sat on blocks, 20km through suburban streets, back into the water, mast, boom and rigging back on and back out on its anchor. After years of planning we are well into building the ultimate solar panel installation for an electric yacht conversion with a narrow stern and a mizzen to make it more difficult. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). The rugged trails of Luperón hide everything from deserted ruins to steep cliffs. Finding the source of a cooling issue on the Volvo Penta MD2030 means opening up the starboard engine to see what is really happening inside. In Luperón, we are wandering more trails in search of adventure. We find bats, cows, deserted buildings, steep cliffs and more. In this video, we sail north in Fakarava to escape incoming weather and take on a project we’ve been dreading—replacing a leaking saildrive ball valve. Our friend Brian is confident it can be done in the water, but we’re not so sure. With plenty that could go wrong, this repair has real consequences. We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! I charge $500 for a 90-min boat consultation. Today, for free, I'm giving you the forensic audit process I’ve developed over 24 years on the water, from nuclear submarines to offshore sailboats. Why this matters: * The Forensic Audit: How to list every system and calculate its true remaining lifespan. * The 16-Year Rule: Why standing rigging is a $20,000 bill waiting to happen. * Hassle Tax: How to negotiate 20% off the price when inheriting deferred maintenance. * Bronze Truth: Why "beautiful" through-holes might actually be pink, brittle, and dangerous. Get the Book: If you want the full breakdown on vetting offshore vessels, I’ve dedicated an entire chapter of my book to this exact subject. We have less than 200 copies left of the first edition cowhide cover before the second printing arrives. 📖 Grab "Be The Captain" here: https://bethecaptain.com/ ⚓ Book a Private Consultation: https://bethecaptain.com/pages/private-offshore-decision-session Contact Chris (rigger): https://www.cc-rigging.com/

Will this DIY plywood boat we built in just one week actually float? After our dinghy got stolen in the Cape Verde islands, so we decided to build one ourselves. on a small island in Africa. In someone else’s garage. With limited tools, limited materials, and a whole lot of improvisation. In this episode, we start building a 9ft stitch-and-glue plywood Spindrift dinghy from scratch. We share the process, the setbacks, and all the scrappy problem-solving along the way. And trust us… this is not one of those polished workshop builds. ⛵ In this episode: – DIY plywood boat build – Stitch & glue dinghy construction – Building a boat with limited supplies – Quick & budget-friendly boat building – Fiberglassing, laminating & bending plywood – Boatbuilding mistakes, fixes & lessons learned – Turning plywood sheets into an actual boat This build tested our patience, creativity, and ability to “make it work” more than once… and at one point, things literally cracked under pressure. 👇 Let us know in the comments: Have you ever built something complicated with limited tools or resources? Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. Welcome back to Sailing Marisa! In this episode, I'm diving into my first major solar energy project. I'm installing a rigid solar panel on the sailboat's guardrail to increase our energy independence while at anchor. It wasn't easy! From missing drill bits and high winds in the marina to a classic rookie mistake that left me with ZERO solar output for a moment—I'm sharing all the ups, downs, and drama of this DIY project. Learn how I routed the cables from the deck to the house battery, installed the solar charge controller (MPPT), added an essential disconnect switch for safety, and tweaked the mounting system for maximum sun exposure. I also address a common question: Is this channel monetized? (Spoiler: Not yet! It's still a labor of love!). Whether you're looking for practical solar installation tips for your own boat or just enjoy the honest reality of sailboat maintenance, this episode has something for you. 🔧 Gear Used in This Episode: Note: I have NO affiliation or partnership with any of these brands. Winter still has Newfoundland in its grip, but while the harbor freezes over again outside, work aboard Arabella continues. This week, Steve tackles one of the biggest frustrations—and potential dangers—of reefing sails offshore at night in rough conditions: managing dozens of loose lines on a moving deck. Inspired by rope bags used in the climbing world, he designs and sews a completely custom line-management system for Arabella’s masts, turning scrap sailcloth and mesh into organized reefing bags built specifically for life offshore. From prototypes and pattern making to stitching intricate baffles and fitting the final bags around the mast, this became one of the most ambitious sewing projects aboard the boat so far. At sea, small improvements can make a huge difference—and we’re hoping this one will make reefing safer, faster, and far less chaotic when conditions turn rough. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! In this video I explain why some sailboats that once cost $1 million are now sitting unwanted on the market. I break down depreciation, maintenance costs, outdated layouts, insurance problems and nervous buyers—and show when a “cheap luxury boat” is actually a very expensive trap. 00:00 Intro 01:13 How These Boats Hit $1 Million in the First Place 04:20 The Insurance Wall That's Killing the Market 07:40 The Boats Sitting on the Market Right Now 09:30 The Pandemic Buyers Who Are Now Desperate to Sell 11:17 Why the Market Won't Recover for These Boats 13:07 Ending Copyright Disclaimer This video may include copyrighted material used under the “fair use” principle for educational and informational purposes.
