Our shakedown cruise on Little Nutshell finally begins as we leave Shotley Marina and head out for our first night aboard. What starts as a simple system check quickly turns into a crooked night on the hard, a muddy hull clean and a whole lot of learning. Join us for boat maintenance, marina mishaps and the real start of our cruising adventure. Magnus installs the battery monitor on the dash and tidies up the electrical cables underneath before we cast off. We finally leave Shotley Marina and begin the first day of our shakedown cruise on Little Nutshell. The plan is to anchor out for the night and check her systems. We head into Tichmarsh Marina to visit the chandlery, as the harbour master has kindly let us pull up alongside. Then it’s out again and onto a mooring for the night, although we still don’t get to test our anchor. We check out the scrubbing poles at the marina, where we plan to head in the early hours of the morning to inspect Little Nutshell’s hull and give her a good clean so we can work out whether she needs antifouling or new anodes. Our calculations aren’t quite right and we end up sitting on the very end of the concrete footings for the scrubbing poles. It’s a crooked night from then on. We check her bottom and she’s in good nick. There aren’t too many barnacles on the hull, but the propeller is smothered in them. Magnus is a real gentleman and does the majority – actually, all – of the cleaning and scrubbing. It’s muddy, slippery and not the most pleasant job. Then it’s back out of the marina and onto a mooring for the night. Hope you enjoy the episode. Until next time, Wendy and Magnus HYPE US! Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing journey, we dive into the real side of boat life — improving comfort onboard, tackling unexpected problems, and sharing the experience with friends as we continue preparing our sailboat for sailing around the world. Life on a cruising sailboat is never just about sailing; it’s about constantly adapting, upgrading, and learning as full-time liveaboard sailors. One of the biggest projects in this episode is upgrading our onboard comfort by measuring and fitting a new mattress for our sailboat. When your boat is your full-time home, sleep matters, and creating a comfortable living space is a huge part of sustainable liveaboard life. We walk through the challenges of working with limited space, unusual boat shapes, and the practical realities of improving life aboard a cruising sailboat. But as every boat owner knows, one job often leads to another. While preparing the cabin, we uncover something many sailors eventually face — mould on a sailboat. Dealing with moisture, ventilation, and condensation is a constant challenge in liveaboard sailing, and discovering mould means turning the boat inside out to clean, investigate, and prevent bigger issues down the track. This episode shows the honest reality of sailboat maintenance, problem-solving, and the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a boat safe and comfortable for long-term cruising. Amid the projects and cleaning, we also welcome visitors onboard, sharing a glimpse into the social side of liveaboard cruising life. One of the best parts of living on a sailboat is the community — friends stopping by, sharing stories, and experiencing life afloat together, even while the boat is mid-project. If you’re interested in sailboat living, beginner sailing, boat ownership, or dreaming about traveling the world by sailboat, this episode highlights both the rewarding and challenging sides of the cruising lifestyle. From boat upgrades and maintenance to everyday moments onboard, this is real life at sea — not just the anchorages and sunsets, but the work that makes those moments possible. Follow along as we continue transforming our sailboat into a comfortable, self-sufficient home ready for bluewater cruising and long-term adventure. Every upgrade, every challenge, and every lesson brings us one step closer to our goal of liveaboard sailing around the world. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. We always say that if you only had one place you can visit on a boat it should be the engine room. The engine room can tell you a lot about the design and function of the vessel, and aboard the Korvet it’s obvious just how important this area is. The full-beam, walk-in engine room is accessed through a proper door—not a hatch—providing exceptional ease of use and maintenance. Generous dimensions allow for twin diesel engines, additional filtration systems, and a generator all in a sound-proof compartment. The result is a vessel engineered from the inside out for easy access to all systems, and serious passage making. 0:00 - Introduction 0:40 - Steering System 1:05 - Technical Room 3:45 - Engine Room Learn more about Korvet Trawlers: https://korvettrawlers.com/ Built by Deep Water Yachts: https://www.deepwateryachts.com/ #trawlerlife #aluminumboat #trawler #selene #nordhavn #aluminumyachts #trawlerfest #gonewiththewynns

⛵ Buon vento! The sails open, the boat comes alive, and she goes back to doing what she was built for: sailing. In this video I cast off the lines and head out for a short sail, just enough to stretch the sails, feel the wind again, and reconnect with that feeling only the sea can give. A simple, authentic sail. No rush—just wind, sea, and boat. In today’s video, I replace the engine battery on the boat and walk you through the full process step by step. What should be a simple job on land is never quite that simple on a boat. From disconnecting the old battery to securing the new one properly so it won’t move in rough conditions, everything requires extra care. A loose battery at sea is not an option. After installation, we check the charging voltage to make sure everything is working correctly — and we’re getting a healthy 14.27V, so the alternator is doing its job. Along the way, I also talk about another postponed project: replacing the marine waterproof carpets. After checking prices, I decided that for now it’s better to clean and maintain what I have and prioritize more important mechanical investments. There’s plenty of winter work ahead: Full engine maintenance Possible exhaust hose replacement Cleaning the exhaust elbow Replacing the anchor chain due to corrosion Boat life means constant maintenance, but every small job done properly brings peace of mind. Special thanks to Xavi Vilanueva for the support and collaboration. Thinking about buying a boat on finance? Financing a boat is the fastest way to start hating boats and turn a dream into a financial nightmare. In this video, we dive into the top reasons why you should never buy a boat with a loan. Here is what you need to know before making a huge mistake: Depreciation vs. Debt: A boat loses value immediately, but your debt doesn't. It is a continuous expense, not an investment, and you could easily end up owing much more than the boat is actually worth. Paying without sailing: You will be forced to pay your monthly loan even during months when bad weather, work, or breakdowns keep you off the water. Plus, the bank doesn't finance all the extra hidden costs of owning a boat, like mooring, insurance, maintenance, and fuel. Loss of control: Life is unpredictable. If you ever lose your job, or your family simply changes hobbies, selling a financed boat is a slow, complicated, and painful process. Instead of finding freedom, you end up trapped in a "floating cell" controlled by the bank, paying extra interest for the privilege. Watch the full video to find out why owning your boat outright is the only true way to enjoy the sea! 00:33 - The Boat Depreciates, the Debt Doesn't. 01:26 - You Pay for the Boat... Even When You Don't Sail 01:54 - Your Needs Can Change. 03:02- Buy the Boat You Can Actually Afford #boating #sailing #yachting

In this episode, I sail through a 36 mph (31 knot) gust on a high-altitude (8,601 ft) Rocky Mountain lake in central Colorado. My small and lightweight (1,100 lbs) Precision 18 sailboat is not really designed for sailing in this kind of wind, but she sailed through it pretty well. I've made several modifications and upgrades to the boat to include adding a second reef to the mainsail, adding a hanked-on #4 (80%) severe weather jib to my sail inventory, adding additional blocks to the factory outhaul setup to flatten the mainsail, and a 4:1 backstay tensioner to add mast bend and flatten the top third of the mainsail. It's also taken a couple of years for me to build the skills for sailing in this much wind. At my mountain lake, 25 to 30 knot gusts are an almost daily occurrence throughout the summer sailing season. To further reduce heeling in the Precision 18, you can also raise the centerboard all the way up and just sail on the shoal draft keel which is a NACA foil (I did not do this for this sail) or you can add additional crew weight on the rail. For more severe weather sailing tips and tricks, check out my video "Storm Tactics for Inland Sailors" available at this link and also linked at the end of the video: https://youtu.be/Hixd4KHzCzs?si=JD8LmcgkB9x9ABwO Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #lakesailing #mountainsailing #saillife #sailingchannel #coloradosailing

Keep Birds Away from Your Boat and Dock: https://www.practical-sailor.com/boat-maintenance/keep-birds-away-from-your-boat-and-dock/ Thinking about buying a 40–45 foot cruising sailboat? Before you default to a Beneteau, Jeanneau, Catalina, or Hunter, this in-depth Practical Sailor review takes a hard, honest look at the Hanse 430E — a German-built cruising sailboat with a very different design philosophy. In this video, we break down everything buyers actually want to know about the Hanse 430E, including real-world ownership considerations, construction quality, sailing performance, and long-term durability. We take a close look at what the “E” (epoxy construction) really means, why epoxy matters for osmosis resistance and structural stiffness, and how it affects repairs and maintenance compared to traditional polyester or vinylester hulls. We also cover how the Hanse 430E compares to popular French production sailboats like Beneteau and Jeanneau, as well as American brands like Catalina and Hunter. Why do some sailors choose a Hanse instead? And why might others stick with the more common production boats? This review explains the tradeoffs clearly, without marketing hype. Topics covered in this video include: Hanse 430E specs in US measurements Epoxy hull construction explained for buyers Sailing performance and handling, including the self-tacking jib Deck layout and short-handed sailing advantages Interior layout, livability, and cruising comfort Common owner-reported issues and survey focus points What to look for when buying a used Hanse 430E Why the Hanse 430E sails differently than typical production cruisers If you’re shopping for a 43-foot cruising sailboat, planning to cruise as a couple, or trying to decide between a Hanse and a Beneteau, this video is designed to give you the big picture — the good, the bad, and the practical reality of ownership. Most people think wooden boatbuilding requires complicated math. It doesn’t. The 7-10-7 rule is a simple geometric trick that lets you turn square stock into a perfectly rounded spar — quickly, accurately, and without repetitive calculations. Square → Octagon → 16 sides → Round. Simple. Elegant. The 7-10-7 Rule — An Old Boatbuilder’s Trick for Perfectly Rounding a Spar In this episode of Nomad Boatbuilding, I share a simple geometric method that replaces repetitive math when shaping spars by hand. Some people think wooden boat building requires complicated calculations. That can be true when designing boats — but building them is another story. In practice, geometry is often far more useful than math. The 7-10-7 rule is a straightforward way to divide the face of a square into proportional sections (7 units, 10 units, 7 units — 24 in total). By removing the corners at those marks, we quickly create an accurate octagon. Repeat the process and we move from square to octagon to 16 sides… and eventually to a smooth, round spar. In this video I cover: • How the 7-10-7 rule works • Why imperial rulers make scaling easy • Turning square stock into an octagon • Moving from 8 sides to 16 sides • Using (and making) a spar gauge • Applying the method to tapered spars • Why geometry beats repetitive calculation • Using the same principle for moldings, banjo necks, plugs, and even walking sticks This method works for squares, rectangles, trapezoids, and tapered spars. It’s one of those core pieces of traditional boatbuilding knowledge that makes shaping round forms efficient, accurate, and satisfying. 🌐 Website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding 🛠 Support these videos on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding If you value traditional boatbuilding knowledge and want to help keep these videos coming, consider supporting the channel on Patreon. ⏱ Chapters: 00:00 Introduction — What Is the 7-10-7 Rule? 00:43 Geometry vs Math in Boatbuilding 01:01 Turning Square Stock into an Octagon 01:24 How the 7-10-7 Division Works 03:56 Demonstration on a 6x6 Cross Section 06:24 From Octagon to 16 Sides 08:08 Applying the Rule to Rectangles & Trapezoids 11:17 Using the Rule on a Tapered Spar 12:37 Spar Gauges Explained 14:41 Imperial vs Metric Scaling 16:08 Making an Octagonal Plug for a Hollow Mast 17:38 Planing to the Lines by Hand 18:50 A Simple Tape Trick for Divisions 20:19 Beyond Boatbuilding — Banjos & Walking Sticks 21:14 Why This Method Works So Well #woodenboat #boatbuilding #sparbuilding #woodworking #handtools #traditionalcraft #geometry #DIYwoodworking #NomadBoatBuilding #MarkReuten

Bikini stretching, batteries, windlass charger, illness, generator starter, pork chops Join us this time for bikini stretches, batteries, a generator fix and pork chops. We’ve been down with an energy zapping virus and are finally on the mend. Even dancing was hard to manage. Karen couldn’t stand being cooped up down below and had to get out on top for some fresh air and stretches wearing a bikini. Maintenance checks on batteries lead to replacing the group 27 engine starter battery, dated 7/20, and the Windlass battery, dated 9/19. The windlass battery was upgraded from a regular group 27 lead acid to a group 31 AGM. Both were still functioning though too old for us. Group 27 batteries are a bit heavy yet Steve was able to muscle them off the boat with little trouble. Then, uh-oh, the charger to the Windlass battery wasn’t working. Yep, another replacement project. New charger, Noco Genius 10amp, is now successfully mounted and working flawlessly. Since we were checking out some of Isabella’s systems, why not start up the generator? Always a good idea to do routine start ups. Well...except this time, the generator didn’t start! It sounded like a starter issue and luckily we had one on board. After blasting and soaking a tight bolt with PB Blaster, Steve took out the old and put in a new starter. We ended the week with some delicious pork chops, brined with sea salt and rubbed with oregano, onion and garlic powders, pepper and paprika. With an added side of coleslaw it was an excellent meal. Thank you so very much to our subscribers and viewers. Your comments and views really help to keep our spirits up especially during these past two weeks. We love having you aboard with us! After ripping out every hose and fitting in our boat, we committed to completely rebuilding our fresh water pressure system from scratch. Instead of traditional marine hose, we chose a PEX-A plumbing system with expansion sleeves—a residential solution that’s marketed as being easy for DIY installers and far more reliable long term. We’re firm believers that when household systems make sense on a sailboat, they’re often the better choice. To do it right, we invested in the expensive electric PEX expansion tool (the only realistic option for working in tight hull spaces) and ordered hundreds of fittings—sleeves, elbows, tees, manifolds, valves, and couplers in both 3/4" and 1/2". We ran nearly 200 feet of PEX pipe through both hulls, from engine room to engine room, and all the way forward into the bow locker. It was one of the biggest infrastructure projects of our refit. We made the final connection, stood back, and felt confident. We were wrong. To pressure test the system, we rented an air compressor and immediately discovered far more leaks than we thought possible. We chased air hissing through bilges, engine rooms, and heads. Soapy water bubbled at fittings we were sure were perfect. What followed was seven days of troubleshooting, ten hardware store runs, and a crash course in the realities of PEX-A installation. Here’s what we learned: Technique with the expansion tool matters more than you think PEX connections don’t seal well in very cold temperatures Reusing a fitting is nearly impossible once you cut off the sleeve—one tiny score mark can cause a leak Confidence is not the same thing as a sealed system After days of cutting, re-expanding, re-routing, and re-testing, we finally sealed the entire freshwater system...or so we thought. This episode is a real-world look at DIY boat plumbing, PEX installation on a sailboat, and the kind of setbacks that come with a full refit. It’s not glamorous—but reliable onboard systems are what make long-term cruising possible. In this special episode of The Art of Boatbuilding, we follow the incredible story of a man reconnecting with the boat he built as a teenager. After six decades in storage, the DN ice boat emerges from the dust of the barn and heads back to where it belongs gliding across the frozen surface once again. With perfect ice conditions on Lake Geneva, the moment finally arrives. What started as a teenage project becomes a lifelong story of craftsmanship, patience, and unfinished dreams finally realized. This is more than a boat launch. It’s a reunion between a builder and the work of his hands, 70 years in the making. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. Life on a sailboat means learning how to fix things yourself… sometimes the hard way. In this episode of Stella Overboard, we haul our 39-foot sailboat Stella out of the water in Langkawi, Malaysia and take on one of the most important upgrades a boat owner can do — replacing every thru hull fitting and seacock on the boat. Old thru hulls can be a major safety risk offshore, so while Stella is on the hard stand we decided it was time to upgrade the entire system. With the help of Marine Supplies Asia and TruDesign, Jesse and I tackle the job ourselves — removing old fittings, installing brand new TruDesign composite thru hulls and seacocks, and learning a lot along the way. No boatyard crew. No professionals. Just two sailors figuring it out as we go. This refit is all part of preparing Stella for our next big adventure sailing through Indonesia in search of remote islands and surf breaks. If you're curious about sailboat maintenance, thru hull installations, or what life in a boatyard is really like — this episode is for you. ⚓ Boat: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i 📍 Filmed in Langkawi, Malaysia Big thanks to: Marine Supplies Asia TruDesign 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. Changing a forestay on a catamaran without dropping the mast — is it even possible? We did it, and here's exactly how. Our forestay on SV GOAT (Lagoon 400) was overdue for replacement. The "right" way means unstepping the mast — a boatyard job, serious cost, serious hassle. We did it the hard way instead: at anchor, with the mast standing. In this episode we walk you through every step: rigging temporary support, managing tension, swapping the stay, and staying (pun intended) safe throughout. No yard. No crane. Just two people, the right tools, and a plan. What we cover: Why we chose to do it with the mast up Tools and hardware you'll need Step-by-step process from start to finish Mistakes to avoid (we made a few) Cost breakdown vs. having a yard do it Whether you're on a Lagoon, a monohull, or any cruising sailboat — if your forestay is due for replacement, watch this before you call the boatyard. In this video I show how EV chargers (often called wallboxes) communicate with the car using the Control Pilot signal. We look at the PWM signal, duty cycle, resistor states (A/B/C) and the diode safety check that tells the charger it’s really connected to a vehicle. To demonstrate this, I built a simple DIY EV charger tester that simulates a car so you can safely observe the charging handshake on an oscilloscope. This project is great if you want to understand: • how EV charging actually works • how the control pilot signal communicates current limits • why a diode is required for safety • how the PWM duty cycle controls the allowed charging current ________________________________________ Parts used in the DIY EV Tester WAGO Lever Nuts (wire connectors) WAGO 221 Lever Nuts 90pc Assortment https://amzn.to/40ioxF5 WAGO 221 Lever Nuts 28pc Assortment https://amzn.to/4rfHrYc Electronics Components Resistor Kit https://amzn.to/4rlecDo 1N4007 Rectifier Diode https://amzn.to/4rlevhw ON/OFF Round Rocker Switch https://amzn.to/4litZ4r Heavy Duty Rocker Toggle Switch https://amzn.to/46MHBPD Indicator LED Light 110V / 120V https://amzn.to/4stPQbo ________________________________________ Tools used in the video OWON Oscilloscope / Multimeter () (I am using the HDS2102 with 100MHz) but the 2CH 25 MHz is more then sufficient for this job https://amzn.to/46NlsR5 ________________________________________ EV Charging Test Equipment Triplett TEV300 Electric Vehicle Charger Test Kit https://amzn.to/4udFcau DEWALT Level 2 EV Charger https://amzn.to/40jTKYB ________________________________________ Affiliate Disclaimer Some of the links above are affiliate links. After spending three unforgettable days at an incredible anchorage, it’s time to pull up anchor and sail back across the bay — and this passage turns out to be anything but ordinary. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing adventure, we say goodbye to crystal-clear waters, peaceful anchor life, and off-grid living before setting sail once again aboard our home on the water. Life as liveaboard sailors preparing to sail around the world is never predictable, and this sail proves exactly why. On our way back, we encounter an unexpected visitor — a large sea snake swimming alongside the boat — a reminder of just how wild and alive the ocean can be when you choose the sailing lifestyle and slow travel by sailboat. As full-time sailors, every trip teaches us something new about comfort, safety, and making life onboard more practical. During this passage, we also tackle a real-world sailing challenge: improving visibility at the helm. Sitting comfortably while maintaining proper visibility and control is essential for long passages, so we work on a clever helm solution that makes steering easier and safer — a small upgrade that makes a big difference for everyday sailboat living. This episode captures the true rhythm of liveaboard boat life — peaceful anchorages, unexpected wildlife encounters, problem-solving at sea, and the constant learning that comes with preparing for long-distance cruising. Whether you’re a beginner sailor dreaming of ocean travel, a sailboat owner looking for practical ideas, or someone inspired by the idea of travelling the world by sailboat, this is real sailing life behind the scenes. Join us as we continue documenting our journey toward full-time world cruising, sharing honest moments of off-grid sailing, boat upgrades, sailing adventures, and life afloat. Subscribe and follow along as we prepare our sailboat for global adventures, learn new sailing skills, and embrace the freedom of slow sailing and liveaboard life. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. We promise you will have a laugh! My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. This week in Newfoundland, Steve and Carter finish their Baker’s Brook Pond recon with one more attempt to cross the ice and reach the big climbing terrain they came to scout. After backing off the previous day due to warming temperatures, they return with colder conditions, a better plan, and a clear strategy for managing the risks of crossing a frozen pond in the backcountry. They test ice thickness, spread out their weight on skis, rig ropes and backup systems, and work through the real decision-making that goes into moving safely across uncertain terrain. After exploring the far side of the fjord and confirming what’s worth coming back for, they return to Arabella to find a few new winter problems waiting at the dock. Back aboard the boat, Steve tracks down an electrical short that knocked out the bubbler, then tackles another liveaboard winter issue: Akiva’s dog hair clogging the electric heaters. From frozen ponds and backcountry route finding to troubleshooting life aboard in a Newfoundland winter, this episode is all about solving problems as they come. -------------------------- Episode #380 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! This week on Escapade, we continue rebuilding the port side of our saloon — and it’s finally time to tackle the flooring. The old teak and holly had seen better days. After ripping everything out, we start fresh using three new sheets of teak and holly from World Panel Products. From templating and cutting to sanding and multiple coats of varnish, this job was a full process — and definitely not a quick one. And when we finally step back for the reveal? The new cabinetry paired with the fresh teak and holly completely transforms the space. Escapade honestly looks like a different boat. If you’re into boat refits, DIY sailing projects, teak and holly flooring installs, or behind-the-scenes sailboat life — you’re in the right place. Products we used in this project: Teak & Holly Panels: World Panel Products American Style Teak & Holly Plywood Veneer Website: https://www.worldpanel.com Location: Riviera Beach, Florida (but they ship all over the place) Phone: +1 (561) 840-0509 Varnish used on the flooring and cabinetry: TotalBoat Gleam Marine Spar Varnish – Amber Finish We used both Gloss and Satin to build up the coats and finish the look. In this episode, I tackle the job of replacing some of the original stumps supporting our beautiful old timber house. She has been slowly slumping for a while now, needing a bit of TLC. Restumping an old house is never just about swapping out timber. It is about working carefully, thinking ahead, and respecting a structure that has been standing for nearly ninety years. There were challenges, adjustments, and a few moments that required a different way of thinking to keep things moving in the right direction. If you are interested in restoring old homes, timber house foundations, or the realities of maintaining a 1930s weatherboard house, this one is for you. DIY Retractable Solar Panels on Speed Rail Arch - Cape Dory 30 Refit Part 4. To maximize solar power in the restricted space on this 30-foot Cape Dory cutter (with electric propulsion), we designed this no-weld/no-bend method for a DIY retractable solar array arch built from Speed Rail fittings, aluminum pipe, and heavy-duty stainless-steel drawer slides. The two extendable panels stow flush under the two fixed upper panels while maneuvering in a marina or for low windage when sailing offshore in heavy weather. They slide out on tracks to deploy when needed at anchor or in moderate conditions offshore. The arch is done but the wiring will be covered in a future video. Subscribe to follow the refit. For more sailboat projects, visit AtomVoyages.com Parts List: Eight pieces 6463-T66 schedule 40 polished anodized 1.25" pipe sold in two pieces 23' stock length. (we used about 36' total) $270 total. It's easiest to cut the pipe and angle on a chop saw but you can also cut it with an angle grinder or hack saw. We purchased two pieces 1.25" polished 6463 grade aluminum schedule 40 pipe in standard 23' lengths from our local wholesale supplier. At $135 each it was cheaper than ordering 8 pieces of cut lengths online. Bright polished anodized aluminum pipe is twice as expensive as 6061 non-anodized and if you don't have a local wholesaler then anodized pipe cost could be prohibitive, which is why most DIY builds choose non-anodized. In that case be prepared to let it weather into that dull oxidized appearance. Note that pipe (like this Schedule 40) is measured by its Nominal Inside Diameter (ID), while stainless steel tubing is measured by its Outside Diameter (OD). This 1.25-inch pipe has an OD of 1.66 inches. If you’re building a larger arch, you'll want to use 1.5-inch pipe (1.9" OD). We used Schedule 40 because it’s plenty strong, lighter, and less pricey than heavy-walled Schedule 80. Two pieces 6061-T6 3/16" x 2" x 62" angle bar (NOT anodized) sold in one piece 25' stock length $87. Anodized angle bar is hard to source and in this build it is not in a highly visible area so doesn't matter if it becomes oxidized on the surface. A stock 25' piece of angle bar is double what we needed but at $87 it was cheaper than buying two shorter pieces online. And we can use some of the leftover on other projects. Speed-rail fittings: 1. Four pieces 1.25" Tee-E $16.48 each https://www.buyrailings.com/shop/variant/07060-5e-tee-e-aluminum-magnesium-1-1-4-ips-12794 2. Four pieces 1.25" elbows $21.16 each https://www.buyrailings.com/shop/variant/07020-3-elbow-aluminum-magnesium-1-1-4-ips-12035 3. Four pieces 1.25" Rectangular Base Flange $22.34 each https://www.buyrailings.com/shop/variant/27170-47-rectangular-base-flange-aluminum-magnesium-1-1-4-ips-12476 4. Two sets stainless steel drawer slides, 27 9/16" closed length. McMaster-Carr Model: 13875A21 $80 each. Solar panels: Two 200 watt and two 100 watt N-type BougeRV 200w bi-facial panels. Because these are N-type bi-facial, shade tolerant, and wired in parallel, they will cope with partial shading better than standard single-sided P-type panels.
