What's the best way to know everything that's happening on your boat while you're at anchor? You can buy a polished, ready-to-go solution — or you can build exactly what you want. We did both. Orca was kind enough to send us their Core2 for evaluation, specifically to explore it as a configurable anchor dashboard — and it's genuinely one of the best out-of-the-box solutions available for cruisers today. Clean interface, solid hardware, easy setup. But we also built our own. The S/V Ingenuity anchor dashboard runs on our Victron Cerbo GX and gives us real-time depth, tides, weather forecasts, wind, solar monitoring, AIS vessel tracking, anchor watch with GPS trail, AC circuit monitoring, and more — all in one custom-built display that we can tweak any time we want. This video isn't about which one is better — it's about which one is right for you. If you want something that works the moment you plug it in, Orca is hard to beat. If you want a system that grows with your boat and your needs, the DIY path might be exactly what you're looking for. No sponsored content. Orca provided the Core2 for evaluation at no cost — all opinions are our own. 💬 Building your own? Drop your questions in the comments — we love talking about this stuff. 📍 Filmed aboard S/V Ingenuity, a 2018 Fountaine Pajot Saona 47, in the beautiful Bahamas. Thanks! In this week's episode, I head out in the morning for a sail with my daughter on a beautiful Saturday in mid-July. It starts out slow, but the winds quickly fill in and make for some very pleasant sailing. As the afternoon wears on, the winds start to pick up (as usual in the Rocky Mountains) and we head back and call it a day. It was truly a perfect few hours of high-altitude Colorado mountain lake sailing. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailingchannel #coloradosailing #sailing #mountainsailing

Sorry for the music overlap of the audio at 34:40 til 34:57. I inadvertently failed to mute the b-roll video and noticed it after I uploaded it. It last 17 seconds but is a very good song so enjoy! In this episode of **SALTY PODCAST #95**, I talk with Atticus from @BoyMeetsOcean on Instagram — a 12-year-old boy living aboard SV Liquid Sunshine with his family as they prepare to sail around the world! Atticus and his family have been living on their sailboat for almost two years, traveling through the Caribbean and Bahamas on their 2016 Lagoon 450. We talk about what it is really like to grow up on a boat, leave normal land life behind, homeschool from the water, meet other boat kids, and learn real sailing skills along the way. Atticus helps with night watches, reads weather, drives the dinghy, edits his own videos, dives, cooks, helps with maintenance, and has already been part of some serious boat-saving teamwork. He shares stories from Grenada, St. Martin, St. Croix, the Exumas, Highborn Cay, Pig Beach, and more. We also talk about his fast-growing social media channel @BoyMeetsOcean, how he went from a couple hundred followers to thousands by posting every day, and what it feels like to be a kid creating sailing content while actually living the adventure. This was such a fun conversation with a young sailor who is smart, capable, funny, and already living a life most adults only dream about. We’re getting the boat ready to shove off, but we hit a major "fail point"—the bilge lockers were looking like a high school science experiment. Living on a sailboat means fighting a constant battle against humidity, and if you leave your gear exposed, the mold wins every single time. It’s a mess, it smells, and it’s eating up the limited real estate we have left in the cabin. . Time to deploy the WW11 Maneuver. We aren't just shoving clothes into lockers anymore; we’re going full isolation mode. I picked up a 10-pack of vacuum storage bags from Amazon to see if we can actually reclaim our storage and kill the "bilge funk" for good. No fancy vacuum cleaner needed—just a manual hand pump and some Southern grit. If this works, we’re looking at an 80% space saving, which is the difference between a cluttered deck and a clean departure. . The lockers are packed, the air is sucked out, and the gear is bone-dry. We’ve managed to compress months of supplies into a fraction of the space, and more importantly, it’s sealed away from the salt and dampness. The mission is a success, the boat is organized, and that means it’s officially Beer-30. . SHOP THE GEAR ⚓ Vacuum Storage Bags (10-Pack with Hand Pump): https://amzn.to/4tgSHor ⚓ Join the Crew for Exclusive Updates: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZBmn0CZW578hpt4ImB3CRA/join ⚓ More Sailing Adventures: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/travel/sailboat-life/ . Do vacuum bags actually prevent mold on a boat? . The Forensic Bottom Line: Yes, because mold needs oxygen and moisture to survive, and these bags eliminate both. By pulling a vacuum and sealing the zipper, you create a microscopic fortress that keeps the "bilge funk" from ever touching your threads. It’s the only way to store linens long-term in the tropics. What happens if the vacuum bag gets a tiny puncture? . The Forensic Bottom Line: The bag will slowly reinflate, and your mold protection is compromised immediately. On a boat, you’ve got to be careful of fiberglass splinters or sharp locker hinges. I usually double-bag the high-stakes stuff or line the locker with a moving blanket to prevent "the slow leak of doom." . Is the manual hand pump worth the effort? . The Forensic Bottom Line: It’s a workout, but it’s the only reliable option when you’re off-grid without 110v power. You don't want to rely on a vacuum cleaner when you're anchored in the middle of nowhere. The manual pump is slow, but it’s "sailor-proof" and doesn't require a generator. . Can I reuse these bags after a season in the bilge? . The Forensic Bottom Line: Absolutely, provided you wipe down the exterior with a vinegar solution before opening. Don't bring the outside mold into your clean cabin environment. Clean the bag, unzip it, and your clothes will smell exactly like they did the day you put them in. . SUPPORT OUT REFIT: help us finish our projects and continue making these videos for you at www.red-seas.com/refit We are upgrading our solar panels on our Leopard catamaran so that we are fully set up to live off grid in some of the most remote islands in the South Pacific. We live full time on our sailboat and we very rarely visit a marina or tie up to a dock so we need to have enough power to keep all our systems running and we think this project is exactly what we need! We have been living for the last 5 years with 1400W of flexible panels (8x175W) on our hardtop and a further 800W of rigid panels (4x200W) above our dinghy but now we're removing all of these and replacing them with something newer and more powerful. The flexible panels have lasted well but we have noticed that 3 panels have failed within in the last 6 months and we can only assume that the others don't have much life left in them either. We will be installing 2x625W panels on our hardtop which will give us almost as much power as we had there before, but in a much smaller space. And then we're going to add 4x695W panels above our dinghy, giving us a huge capacity.....and they're bifacial so we can add another 15% or so on top of that with the reflections from the water. We'll monitor our usage when we get back in the water and see how efficient the bifacial panels are, and how true these claims of reflective capacity are. But for now, we're excited to have that much more power to fill our new 1200Ah of (semi) solid state lithium batteries. We went hiking through the forest to the famous blowholes along the shoreline near Luperon, but finding them was only half the adventure. Back on the mooring, the real work resumed, with our latest cockpit upgrade. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, we’re heading deep into the forests of Luperón to hunt down the famous shoreline blowholes. Back on deck, we’re leveling up our cockpit with a brand new helm seat. It’s a project that puts our tools to the test, but we’re eager to see if this upgrade is the perfect fit for our life at sea. Cruising the Dominican Republic leads us to unique spots like Luperón, where we balance inland hikes with essential boat maintenance. Tackling a helm seat installation on a mooring is standard practice for our liveaboard lifestyle. We share our process for these cockpit upgrades and marine DIY projects to help fellow sailors with their own boat refits and cruising plans throughout the Caribbean. 00:00 - Introduction 01:42 - Hiking the Luperón Forest 05:32 - Locating the Blowholes 08:50 - Old Helm Seat Removal 16:55 - New Helm Seat Install 20:20 - Testing the Fit & Function -------------------- 🌊 Sailing Dark Angel follows our real-life journey sailing the Caribbean aboard our Island Spirit catamaran, sharing the challenges, adventures, and everyday moments of liveaboard sailing life. -------------------- 🎥 Become part of the Crew on Patreon Without a Crew, a Ship Has No Direction. What's the secret to clean seams, rock solid fittings, and a perfectly aligned kayak deck? In this episode I'll show you exactly how it's done. I start by creating smooth, professional quality epoxy fillets that reinforce joints while giving your build that crisp finished look every builder aims for. Next I move on to installing foot brace anchor bolts using small pre-preg carbon fiber patches for a clean and incredibly strong result. And finally I tackle attaching the deck to the hull using strapping tape and CA glue — a fast, reliable method to hold everything perfectly in place before final bonding. Whether you're building along or just love the craft, this episode of The Art of Boat Building is packed with practical techniques you can put to use right away. Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. Join us for another episode of liveaboard sailing life as we tackle essential boat maintenance and celebrate a special milestone on the water! In this episode, we fix an issue with our mainsail setup by replacing the mainsail line (halyard) after discovering it was the incorrect diameter—something that can seriously impact performance, safety, and ease of handling onboard. With just six weeks to go before we cast off and begin sailing around the world, every job counts as we get the boat ready for full-time cruising. We also take part in a traditional boat renaming ceremony with friends, combining practical sailing life with meaningful maritime tradition. If you're into sailing around the world, liveaboard lifestyle, or learning the realities of sailboat maintenance, this video is packed with hands-on insights. Using the wrong line diameter can cause friction, slipping, and unnecessary wear, so we walk you through why we made the change, what we replaced it with, and how this simple fix improves our sailing setup. This is the kind of real-world problem-solving every sailboat owner, beginner sailor, and cruising sailor will face—especially when preparing for offshore sailing or bluewater cruising. With departure day fast approaching, we’re deep into the final stages of preparation—dialling in systems, upgrading gear, and making sure everything is ready for life off-grid at sea. If you’ve ever dreamed of leaving the dock behind and embracing slow travel by sailboat, this is what it really looks like in the lead-up to a big adventure. But it’s not all maintenance! We also join our friends for a traditional boat renaming ceremony, a time-honoured ritual believed to bring good luck and safe passage. From removing the old name to celebrating the new one, this is a great look into the culture and superstition that’s still very much alive in the sailing community. Our channel is all about liveaboard sailing adventures, off-grid sailing life, and the journey toward sailing full-time around the world. We share everything from boat projects and upgrades to unforgettable moments at anchor. This episode is perfect for: Beginner sailors learning boat systems and upgrades Sailboat owners troubleshooting rigging issues Anyone interested in sailing vlogs, boat life, and travel by sea Those dreaming of a liveaboard sailing lifestyle Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe as we count down the final weeks before we set sail! Electric boats are no longer some far-off future idea — they’re here, and my new Island Spirit 525e is a perfect example. With a 210 kWh battery bank, two 65 kW electric motors, and around 80 nautical miles of electric range at 6 knots, this is a serious electric propulsion system. In this episode, I talk about the safety side of modern electric boats: lithium batteries, battery monitoring, cooling systems, electric propulsion, installation quality, and why today’s systems are much safer than they were just a few years ago. I also get into one of the biggest fears on any modern sailboat: lightning. A lightning strike can cause massive damage, destroy electronics, and create electrical gremlins that last for years. That’s why I installed the CMCE Sertec lightning prevention system on my boat. I explain how it works, why I think lightning protection is essential on a modern electric catamaran, and why protecting all these electronics and batteries matters more than ever. We’ll also talk about maintenance, reliability, generator backup, energy management, and what life is really like with a modern lithium and electric propulsion system onboard. Topics in this episode: Lithium battery safety on boats Electric propulsion systems Battery monitoring and cooling Lightning protection CMCE Sertec system Generator backup Marine electronics Electric sailing catamarans Island Spirit 525e Modern boat reliability Big takeaway: electric boats are not scary when they’re done right — what’s scary is powerful technology installed casually. And f you are looking for the Sertec lightning prevention system in Asia contact Electrical Marine https://electrical-marine.com/ Otherwise, check out their website: https://marine.sertec.com.py/en/

► During a visit to the Intermer headquarters in Saint-Martin-de-Crau, we met with Sylvain Mizzi and Michael Amoros to discuss the international expansion of the AD Nautic network. A brief look back: Intermer’s headquarters, which serves as the central hub of the AD Nautic network internationally, is built on an organization established in the 1970s. ► Formerly known as Accastillage Diffusion, the brand has adopted an international name while retaining its logo featuring the two shackles. This major player in marine equipment relies on a network of franchised stores specializing in shipchandling, dedicated to the equipment and maintenance of recreational boats. Today, the AD Nautic network includes nearly 80 outlets in France and around 30 in Spain. Beyond this European base, the network also has locations in key sailing areas. “The network is built on three pillars: technical expertise, brand affinity, and catalogue depth,” emphasizes Michael Amoros, Director of the AD Nautic franchise network. ► From the Canary Islands to the Caribbean, and as far as the Pacific and Indian Oceans, AD Nautic has established a presence along major maritime routes. Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Tahiti, Nouméa, Madagascar, and Phuket serve as supply points for parts and equipment during stopovers. “The goal is to support boaters throughout their journey, wherever they sail,” explains Sylvain Mizzi, Brand and Customer Experience Director. ► At sea, needs are not always predictable. Maintenance, part replacements, onboard comfort improvements, and occasional interventions are part of everyday life, with a key constraint: rapid access to the necessary equipment, especially during technical stopovers. In this context, the issue is not just purchasing, but product availability and the network’s ability to ensure continuity of service from one region to another. In addition to its physical presence, AD Nautic offers an extensive catalogue. Around 15,000 items are available in-store, and up to 20,000 online, across thirteen product categories covering the main onboard needs. ► www.ad-nautic.com ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► The 444 was launched in 2019, and 36 units have been delivered since then. Nine are currently in build and 4 more are on order. The model showcased at the International Multihull Show was particularly impressive because it was built four years ago and has logged 26,000 nautical miles… and yet, it looks brand new! ► Discover our test in MW197 : https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/catamaran/vision-444-the-cruising-catamaran-according-to-james ► Better yet: with no fewer than 18 people on board (!), it took us up to 8 knots under gennaker and even 10 knots with its asymmetric spinnaker. Not bad for a blue water cruising long-distance catamaran! Inside, this multihull boasts particularly generous headroom (6’11”/2.1 m in the nacelle and 6’2”/1.89 m in the cabins). The construction is in infusion, and all technical components are carefully assembled to facilitate maintenance operations. Thinking about buying a catamaran? Watch this before you make an offer. It’s surprisingly easy to make a $150,000 mistake when buying a used cruising catamaran — and most buyers don’t realise where the risks are until 6–24 months after ownership. In this video, I break down what actually happens after you buy — the part that listings, brokers, and even surveys often don’t fully reveal. You’ll learn: • Why focusing on price layout, cabins, and cosmetics can lead you in the wrong direction • The real drivers of long-term ownership cost (systems, refit cycle, maintenance history, structural issues) • Why a “survey” alone is not enough to protect you • Where buyers typically lose $20K–$150K+ in this process • What most owners only realise after they’ve already bought This isn’t theory — it’s based on my own experience owning upgrading and refitting a Leopard 48 for seven years and working with buyers navigating these decisions in real life. ________________________________________ 🚨 The Reality A catamaran isn’t just a purchase — it’s: • A maintenance profile • A refit timeline • A cost structure And most of those decisions are made before you even make an offer. ________________________________________ 🎓 Coming Soon Online Course_ How to Buy a Used Cruising Catamaran (Without Making a $150K Mistake) I’m building a practical online course that shows you: • How to properly evaluate a catamaran before making an offer • How to compare boats using a structured assessment process • How to understand model risks, systems, and refit cycles • How to avoid overpaying and making emotional decisions • Examples upgrades and repairs from my leopard 48 This is the same framework I use with consulting clients — turned into a system you can use yourself. 👉 Join the Early Access List The course is launching soon. 👉 Join the early registration list below 👉 Receive a limited launch offer when it goes live https://www.catamaranmentor.com/buy-used-catamaran-course ________________________________________ ⚓ Final Thought Most buyers: • Move too fast • Learn too late • And pay for it in time, stress, and money Slow the process down. Understand more before you commit. And give yourself the best chance of making your cruising dream happen — 👉 in an organised, informed, and planned way. ________________________________________

Step aboard WINDHORSE, a 2003 Hylas 49 designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Queen Long Marine. Long regarded as one of the most sought-after Hylas designs, the Hylas 49 blends serious offshore capability, graceful center cockpit styling, and a spacious three-cabin interior that has made the model a favorite among bluewater cruising sailors. WINDHORSE is being offered for the first time on the brokerage market and has seen remarkably light use. Her original owner kept her in the Caribbean, typically using her only three months per year, with a ten-year period during which she remained covered and unused. Following that layup, she was fully serviced and has continued to be lightly enjoyed on a seasonal basis. In this episode I replace a boat trailer hub on my 1987 Precision 16 trailer. The inner seal on the passenger side was faulty and leaking grease. This is my first-ever trailer hub replacement. Up until this point, I've pretty much done every other kind of maintenance task you can possibly do on a boat trailer. Trailer bearing maintenance was the final skill I needed to learn about boat trailer maintenance. In preparation, I did a bunch of research and watched many YouTube videos. But I still learned some new information in the process of doing this job (like don't mix different types of grease). I hope you find this information helpful. #sailingchannel #coloradosailing #sailing #mountainsailing #sailingtips #sailinglife #learntosail
Solving the solar panel challenge for an electric yacht conversion with a narrow stern and a mizzen to make it more difficult. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). Learn the "How" to anchoring with NauticEd's Anchoring Course - https://www.nauticed.org/sailing-courses/view/anchoring-a-sailboat?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=65-ls5E2RQg Check out IMTRA the windlass experts - https://www.imtra.com If your anchor chain is skipping, jumping, or jamming in the chain wheel, the most likely cause is a mismatch between your chain type and your gypsy — and it is one of the most misdiagnosed problems in windlass operation. This NauticEd video explains exactly why chain skipping happens on horizontal windlasses, how to identify a chain and gypsy mismatch, and how to measure your chain correctly so you can fix it right the first time. What this video covers: - Why chain skipping is far more common on horizontal windlasses than vertical windlasses and the reason for that difference - How lead angle affects chain engagement and causes skipping even when the chain and gypsy are correctly matched - The three main chain types used in the marine industry: Proof Coil, BBB Triple B, and G43 High Test — and why they are not interchangeable - Why High Test chain links are longer in pitch than Triple B at the same diameter, causing them to skip when run through a Triple B gypsy - How to read the stampings and codes cast into your chain wheel to identify what chain type it is designed for - How gypsy wear causes the link pocket shoulders to soften over time, leading to skipping even with a matched chain - The four critical chain measurements you need before ordering a replacement gypsy or chain: rod thickness, pitch, inside link length, and inside and outside link width - Why a caliper is required for accurate chain measurement and why a tape measure is not sufficient - How to decide whether to replace the chain or replace the gypsy when a mismatch is confirmed A chain and gypsy mismatch does not fix itself. Running mismatched components accelerates wear on both and will eventually result in a jam or a dropped anchor. Getting the match right is one of the most important steps in windlass maintenance. An “ES” version lengthened by 16 inches (41 cm) now features in the catalog. ► Technical Specifications: Builder: Vision Yachts Length overall: 43’1”/44’6” (13.12/13.53 m) Beam: 24’11” (7.6 m) Draft: 3’10” (1.17 m) Light displacement: 24,955 lbs (11.32 t) Mainsail: 823 sq ft (76.5 m²) Self-tacking jib: 348 sq ft (32.3 m²) Motors: 2 x 37 HP Fuel: 200 US gal (757 l) Water: 220 US gal (833 l) Price: $ 975,000 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! This was one of those days in Port Protection where nothing goes the way you think it will, with surprises around most every corner. We started with a simple plan… Scott was going to go to work at Liz's and Audrey take a little time at the boat. But like most days living on a boat in remote Alaska, the plan had other ideas. What followed was a full day of real life unfolding in every direction. From a walk up the boardwalk to return some gear, small-town encounters, to troubleshooting diesel leaks in the bilge, debating whether to move the boat, and squeezing into tight dock space with shifting wind conditions… it turned into one of those classic “figure it out as you go” days. In between, we worked on the cabin project - replacing rotted posts, and trying to draw the line on a project that could easily go on forever. That’s part of life out here too… knowing when something is “good enough” so you can move onto the next thing. And then somehow, after all that… the day ended with an unexpected paddleboard trip across the bay at sunset to our friend Veronica's for a karaoke party we didn’t plan on. That’s Port Protection. That’s boat life in Southeast Alaska. You think you’re having one kind of day… and it turns into something else entirely. If you’ve ever wondered what daily life actually looks like living aboard a sailboat in remote Alaska, this is it. Thanks for joining. ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 Ending the day at a surprise karaoke party 00:11 Morning in Port Protection + boardwalk walk 01:30 Boat life reality check (diesel + bilge) 02:30 Trying to “just vlog” in real life 03:30 The plan: finish work at Liz’s place 05:30 Nature break: skunk cabbage & spring signs 06:30 The real challenge: when is a project done? 09:00 Dock talk + changing plans again 10:50 Should we move the boat?
