We are fitting an electric motor, and we have run into problems with the batteries we have bought, with British Standards and with Insurance. We have had to question all our decisions and struggle to find a way forward. We still got other jobs done though.! We are now living aboard our Rival 38 CentreCockput full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.p... Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). In this episode aboard SV Reeva, we crossed the Singapore Strait and arrived at Senibong Cove Marina, Johor Bahru. It was a bittersweet moment as we said goodbye to our crew — Swaroop and Apoorva returned to Switzerland, and Kaeya headed back to India. With the boat suddenly quiet, it took us a few days to adjust to life with just the two of us again. Once the farewells were behind us, it was time to get Reeva ready for new adventures. We stocked up on provisions, refilled our gas cylinders (with some creative jugaad!), and serviced our 35-year-old engine as part of its 300-hour maintenance. Soon, we set sail for Tioman Island, one of Malaysia’s most beautiful destinations, famous for its turquoise waters, turtles, and coral reefs. Along the way, we navigated busy shipping lanes near Johor Bahru, dodged merchant vessels, and found joy in the small moments of couple sailing life. Come along as we shift from sailing with family and friends to preparing for fresh adventures together. Don’t forget to Like, Comment, and Subscribe to follow our journey on SV Reeva. This episode discusses proper placement of a sailboat's jib cars on the jib car track and how to find the neutral starting position or "baseline" placement of the cars along the track for your particular sails. Finding the baseline position involves measuring the luff of the sail to find the mid-point and then drawing a line from there, through the clew, and locating the intersecting point along the jib car track. This "baseline" position is the theoretical position where the jib car should be placed in ideal conditions (neither overpowered nor underpowered) and smooth water. It may be different for each sail in your inventory. I also discuss the adjustment of the jib cars based on different sailing conditions. Moving the cars fore and aft changes the angle of force applied to the clew of the headsail. Moving the car aft increases the horizontal force (more pressure on the foot) while decreasing the vertical force (less pressure on the leech). Moving the car forward does the opposite, decreasing the horizontal force on the clew and increasing the vertical force. Generally, for heavier wind the jib cars are moved aft to flatten (de-power) the foot (bottom third) of the headsail and decrease leech tension which increases twist and reduces heeling force. For light air sailing, jib cars can be moved forward to increase the chamber or "belly" in the sail which will provide more power. More belly in the headsail can also used to increase power when dealing with waves and chop. Welcome to Season 7 of Winded Voyage. This is sailing Africa. And it starts by doing big time maintenance on my dear Galopin. Most notably the Perkins 4108 engine. We sailed here from Cabo Verde when the engine was showing it's aches and pains. So as soon as we anchored I asked master mechanic Arona if we could take out Simone the engine for a complete rebuild. Within a few days, Arona was lifting the Perkins out of the boat at our mooring and taking it to the beach and on to his bench. Only here can one experience this marvel of African strength and unity. 00:00 Intro 00:22 Mooring control 00:45 Bloody message 01:35 Go fish 03:01 Beauty care store 03:45 My kind of shopping 04:26 Bounty inventory 05:59 Knock knock 06:53 Arona's there 10:10 Engine beach landing 11:41 Next week Some say it’s The Best Sailing Channel on YouTube! Something that can be stored on a smaller boat and even be charged with solar and wind? In this video, I review the Smaco S700 2L Mini Scuba Tank and the Smaco HEAP 1 Portable Electric Compressor. I’ll unbox and assemble the gear, fill the tank, and explain why this compact scuba system is great for: - Cleaning your sailboat’s hull and propeller at anchor - Changing zincs and inspecting thru-hulls - Checking on ground tackle - Emergency underwater repairs As a longtime diver and sailor, I’ve found this setup to be a great alternative to heavy, traditional scuba tanks, especially for hull maintenance, and for cruisers who want lightweight, portable gear on board. Stability & Handling: The semi-displacement hull and wide beam provide excellent stability in moderate seas, making it ideal for coastal cruising in areas like the Pacific Northwest or the Great Loop. Versatile Use: Perfect for overnight cruising, day trips, or as a comfortable liveaboard with its spacious interior and practical layout. Durable Construction: Built by Chung Hwa Boats in Taiwan, the heavily laid-up fiberglass hull ensures durability, though check for window leaks and deck maintenance. Low Maintenance Options: Many models have replaced teak decks with fiberglass for reduced upkeep, and features like LED lighting and updated windows (e.g., Diamond Seaglaze) enhance longevity. Great Loop Capable: With a shallow draft and robust systems, this trawler is well-suited for extended adventures like the Great Loop. Classic Appeal: The teak interior and exterior brightwork give it a timeless, head-turning aesthetic, perfect for those who love traditional trawler styling. ⚠️ Maintenance Tips Inspect for window leaks, a common issue with Taiwanese trawlers, to prevent cabin damage. Check the keel and hull for delamination or blistering, especially if the boat has grounded. Ensure the propeller is balanced to avoid vibrations and verify engine maintenance records for the reliable Lehman or Perkins engines.

We’re now just 8 weeks away from moving aboard our sailboat full-time as part of our liveaboard sailing adventure around the world! In this episode, we share an exciting (and slightly overwhelming) update on where we are with the downsizing process — selling, donating, and letting go of years of land-based possessions to embrace the simplicity and freedom of life on the water. This week, with the woods ban still in place, we decide to hightail it to Newfoundland via the Bras d’Or Lakes. We’re itching to get climbing, hiking and biking again! Before we start sailing north, I took the time to do something that’s been on my to-do list for a while: calibrate our fuel dipstick. I used our Keenan Filters fuel filter to move all of our diesel into one tank, so we can use the empty tank for calibration. Leaving Terence Bay was a little emotional. It’s a bummer we didn’t get to explore all that this region has to offer, but it’s time to keep moseying to where the mountains meet the ocean (and where we can actually climb those mountains). Aboard for the run from Terence Bay to St. Peter’s is Kyle, who you might remember from when we installed our water systems during the last crazy year of the build. The sail to St. Peters—the gateway to the Bras d’Or Lakes—was full of variety and spice: we saw everything from low winds that forced us to run the engine, to 25 knot winds that put Arabella on a wild heel as she crashed through the waves. We arrived at the St. Peter’s Lock around midnight. It’s never our favorite to arrive in a new harbor at dark, but that’s how it goes with sailing sometimes. You can’t always pick your timing… At St. Peter’s, Robin meets us with the truck and jumps on board as we navigate the lock and pick up a mooring at the Lions Club Marina. We have certainly entered a different biosphere—one that is much less harsh (and much less foggy) than the cold, open North Atlantic. After a few days on a mooring, we decide to start moseying through the Bras d’Ors, heading to Macnabs Cove, where Akiva will get to have his very own island to explore. I also decide that cruising the Bras d’Or Lakes would be a good opportunity for Robin to “single hand” Arabella, so she’ll be running the show as we bump around the lakes. Past little baby lighthouses, we drop anchor in Macnabs and promptly run Akiva over to his island. Anchored in a beautiful corner of the Bras d’Or Lakes, I take the opportunity to replace and improve the painter line on our hand-built wooden dinghy, Victoria. Waking up to a missing dinghy is NOT a good time, as we’ve learned from experience. I have an idea that will add some shock absorbency to the system, which will increase the longevity of the painter line and reduce the amount of stress on the attachment point. I’m glad to have my pattern maker’s vise to help me bring my idea to fruition. Tune in next week, as we continue cruising the Bras d’Or Lakes, making way towards Newfoundland! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Our boat refit that includes a conversion to all electric needs a lot of solar panels. We are fitting four Victron 175watt panels to the guardrails (2 per side). So we have designed and built custom support arms that attach to our carbon fibre guardrails allowing the panels to swivel. All made with low cost materials. We are now living aboard full-time and want to get off-grid as soon as possible so we don't have to pay for boatyard electricity. Sailing my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat on a beautiful evening in ideal winds on a high-altitude (8,601ft) Rocky Mountain lake. This episode features late summer sailing on the last Wednesday of August. Late summer and early fall is the best time to sail in Colorado, because there are fewer afternoon thunderstorms and calmer winds. This time of year is when I start sailing from sunrise to sunset and get full 12-hour days on the lake. And since it's a weekday, I have the lake all to myself. The episode features plenty of natural beauty, mountain views, and wind and water sounds. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #lakesailing #mountainsailing #saillife #sailingchannel #coloradosailing

Coming up in this episode 231. After all the head scratching and work trying to solve the knocking noise coming from the back of the engine we finally figured out it was the coupling so we swapped it out for a new one. Today we go for a sea trial and disaster strike! Also we take our exhaust elbow to get in welded while we wait for yet more engine parts. Maintenance work continues on Trade Runner here at Helena Marina. The yard workers help me out with the sanding and do a mint job, so happy with that! I learn that I need to start the days early as each afternoon the squalls roll through and dump tons of water. I cross things off the job-list though and before you know it the boat is ready to splash again.
