Cleaning months of diesel grease off a valve cover is tedious work, but it turns out a little rhythm in the galley can change the whole mood of a heavy maintenance project. We are on our mooring in Luperón to tackle the thorough cleaning and reassembly of the Volvo Penta MD2030 valve cover, coolant pump, and heat exchanger. To break up the monotony of the technical rebuild, I spice up the routine boat chores with some music. A good playlist makes it much more fun to navigate the tight spaces while making the bed in a tiny bunk area, washing dishes in the galley, and sweeping down the cockpit. Before the epoxy goes on, the hull has to be right. Not just structurally right, but truly, honestly fair. In this video I take you through the fairing and staining of the hull of my Little Auk kayak build, a process that sits somewhere between woodworking and sculpture and asks as much of your hands as it does your eye. As a sculptor, fairing has always felt like familiar ground reading a surface with your fingertips, listening to what the material wants to be, coaxing a form toward something that feels inevitable rather than imposed. I take you through the full process, from the first passes with the plane through to longboarding, sanding, and the constant conversation between tool and wood that fairing really is. Then the stain. I'm using an alcohol-based stain here, chosen specifically because it plays well with epoxy, it penetrates the wood cleanly, locks in beautifully under the epoxy coat, and brings out a warmth and depth in the grain that a water-based product simply can't match. Watching the color come up on a faired hull for the first time is one of those quiet, satisfying moments that reminds you exactly why you build by hand. If you're building a kayak, thinking about building one, or just love the craft of working wood into something that moves on water, this one's for you. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. Should We Rescue This Free Sailboat? A friend is giving away an old sailboat for free, and now we have to answer the dangerous question every sailor secretly loves: is this a cheap sailing adventure waiting to happen, or is a “free boat” just the most expensive kind of boat? In this Practical Sailor video, we take a first look at a free sailboat project and decide whether it is worth saving. We’ll tour the boat, look at the hull, trailer, rigging, deck, hardware, cabin, sails, outboard situation, keel, rudder, and all the little clues that tell you whether an old sailboat is a bargain, a rescue project, or a financial ambush wearing bottom paint. This could become a full sailboat restoration and refit series, where we bring home an old pocket cruiser, inspect everything, fix what needs fixing, install new sailing gear, upgrade hardware, and find out what it really takes to turn a free sailboat into a safe, usable, fun little cruising boat. If you’re into sailing, sailboat restoration, cheap sailboats, free boats, trailer sailers, old sailboats, DIY boat repair, sailboat refits, pocket cruisers, small cruising boats, boat projects, affordable sailing, or learning how to inspect a used sailboat before buying it, this is exactly the kind of adventure we’re getting into. So here’s the question: should we rescue this free sailboat, bring it home, and turn it into a Practical Sailor project boat? Or should we run away before the “free” boat starts sending invoices? Tell me what you see, what worries you, what you’d check first, and whether you think this old sailboat deserves a second life. #FreeSailboat #SailboatRestoration #PracticalSailor Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

Overloading a boat drastically impacts performance. Check the waterline first! Older boats hide aging wiring and plumbing, and poorly done upgrades (like lithium conversions or solar) can be nightmares. Core integrity and hardware mounting points are crucial. #BoatBuying #SailingTips #YachtLife #Maintenance

Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. Living on a sailboat and preparing to sail around the world means every system onboard has to be reliable — and in this episode we tackle one of the most important comforts of liveaboard life… the sailboat hot water system. What starts as a simple troubleshooting job quickly turns into another challenge of boat ownership as we work to diagnose and repair the hot water problems onboard our cruising sailboat before we leave to explore the world by sea. If you love sailing videos, liveaboard sailing, boat projects, sailboat maintenance, cruising adventures, and real behind-the-scenes boat life, this episode is for you. Join us as we continue preparing our sailboat for offshore cruising and long-term world travel while learning more about the systems that keep a liveaboard boat running safely and comfortably. From plumbing issues to marine hot water systems, we take you through the process of troubleshooting, problem-solving, and getting one step closer to casting off the dock lines for good in just a few short weeks. Preparing a sailboat for bluewater cruising is never easy, and every repair teaches us something new. Whether you’re a beginner sailor, experienced cruiser, sailboat owner, or someone dreaming about travelling the world by sailboat, we hope these sailing adventures inspire you to chase your own dream of freedom and life at sea. Our goal is to leave the dock and sail around the world, documenting every step of the journey — from sailboat upgrades and boat maintenance to offshore sailing adventures, anchoring in tropical destinations, and the realities of living full-time on a yacht. This channel is all about real liveaboard sailing life, learning as we go, and sharing the highs and lows of preparing a cruising sailboat for adventure. Subscribe and follow our journey as we work towards full-time sailing, world travel by sailboat, and life on the water. There’s still plenty to do before departure, and every project gets us one step closer to exploring the oceans and living the dream of sailing around the world. Before Arabella heads south for another season of exploration, Steve returns to where the journey first began—the woods and stumps where the oak trees for the boat were harvested more than 10 years ago. What was once a busy milling site covered in sawdust, logs, and lumber stacks has slowly returned to forest. The stumps remain, the next generation of trees is already growing, and the cycle continues. Back aboard the boat, preparations for summer expeditions along Newfoundland’s remote south coast are ramping up. Climbing ropes, bolts, static lines, and expedition gear are unpacked and sorted as Steve and Robin get ready to explore massive granite walls that may hold untouched climbing routes. Meanwhile, another round of sewing projects aboard Arabella continues, including custom rope bags, cockpit storage, and new awnings designed to make life aboard cleaner, cooler, and more functional for the adventures ahead. The next chapter is getting closer. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. I spent three weeks comparing the REAL cost of owning a catamaran vs a monohull... and the results honestly changed how I see sailing completely. Everyone talks about purchase price, but almost nobody talks about what happens AFTER year one. Slip fees, insurance, haul outs, maintenance, sails, beginner mistakes, repairs... it adds up fast. In this video, I break down: ⛵ Purchase prices 💸 Marina and slip fees 🔧 Maintenance and haul outs ⚓ Insurance costs 🛠 Beginner repair mistakes 📊 Real yearly ownership numbers I compared real boats, real prices, and real maintenance costs to figure out which path actually makes sense for a beginner sailor planning for coastal cruising and eventually offshore sailing. And the difference? It’s bigger than I expected. Subscribe because next week I’m talking about why experienced sailors STILL make the wrong decision when choosing between a catamaran and a monohull. #Sailing #Catamaran #Monohull #BoatLife #Liveaboard #Sailboat #SailingLife #CruisingLife

After part of the second storey collapsed inside our 150 year old abandoned school, we had no choice but to access the building from the roof using climbing ropes and safety gear. With the help of our friends Paul and Einion, we started removing rotten wood, clearing dangerous debris, and saving as many original slates and tiles as possible before the roof brings down more of the structure. If you’re into DIY projects, restoration builds, and breathing life back into heritage properties, this series is for you. In this episode, I sail to the shallow north end of Eleven Mile Canyon Reservoir in central Colorado where I get repeatedly fouled by milfoil, get caught in a storm, and fear I may not make it back. It was my worst, most awful, terrible sail. The north end of the lake is about 2.5 miles long by 1 mile wide and separated from the south end by a string of small islands and rocks that run across a narrow neck of the lake. I normally stay on the south end of the lake where the water is deep (up to 136 ft) and there are fewer boats, beautiful coves and less water milfoil to foul my boat's rudder and centerboard. The north end is shallow, more crowded, and has a serious Eurasian water milfoil problem (an invasive aquatic plant species spreading across the U.S.). The north end is more wide open, surrounded mostly by prairie land, and opens up to the valley that makes up South Park (in Colorado, a high-altitude valley is called a Park). The South Park National Heritage Area was created by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in March 2009. The openness of the north end normally makes for more consistent, less swirly and less gusty winds than the south end. The south end has unpredictable winds because it is closed in on three sides by 11,500' tall mountain peaks. During this worst, most awful, and terrible sail I get fouled repeatedly by invasive Eurasian water milfoil and have my rudder kicked back by large clumps of weeds. As an afternoon storm approached and the winds picked up, I was not sure how I was going to get back to the marina. This video also includes a cool underwater view of leaving the slip and lowering the centerboard. Installing a wireless remote control on our Bavaria 37 anchor windlass sounded simple… until we started digging into the wiring! In this video we install and test a WINCHMAX wireless windlass remote system so we can control the anchor from anywhere on board. We explain how the contactor system works, how the wiring is arranged, and how the remote interfaces with the existing deck switches and helm controls. We also cover: ⚓ How anchor windlass control systems actually work ⚓ Contactor wiring explained simply ⚓ Safety considerations when installing a wireless remote ⚓ Real-world testing aboard SV Impavidus ⚓ Why this might be one of the best upgrades for short-handed sailing The ability to raise or lower the anchor while standing at the bow — or even elsewhere on the boat — completely changes anchoring and docking flexibility. In today's episode, we faced that dreaded STRONG WIND here in Greece, the Meltemi. We spent several days stuck inside the boat waiting for it to pass and for the calm to return. What's it like to live on a boat in moments like that? The wind was very strong! We took the opportunity to train and take care of our health, do some maintenance on Joy, eat some Gyros, and go to the market. We also kept an eye on the "crazy charterers" who cause trouble at anchor when the strong winds pick up. And Pathy kept trying to learn to sing the weather FORECAST song 😂😂😂. How did two people in their 20s afford to buy a sailboat and sail around the world? In this episode of Stella Overboard, we finally sit down and share the full story of how we went from living in a beat-up van in Australia to buying a 39ft sailboat and sailing across Southeast Asia full-time. A few years ago we had almost no money, no house, no savings, and honestly no idea what our future looked like. After meeting in Byron Bay, Australia, we spent months living out of our van, traveling the coast, surfing, fishing, and trying to figure out how we could create a completely different life for ourselves. That’s when we made the decision to work FIFO mining jobs in remote Western Australia. FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) work meant living for weeks at a time in isolated mining camps deep in the Australian outback, working exhausting 12-hour shifts in extreme heat, dirt, iron ore dust, and nonstop routines. It was physically and mentally draining, but it gave us one opportunity we never thought we’d have — the ability to save serious money quickly. For nearly two years we sacrificed comfort, freedom, time together, and pretty much everything normal people in their 20s were doing… all with one goal: Buy a sailboat and escape the traditional path. While many people around us were buying houses, financing cars, and settling into city life, we took a completely different route and invested everything into a life of adventure, freedom, travel, sailing, surfing, and living off-grid on the ocean. In this video we talk honestly about: ⚓ How we saved enough money to buy our sailboat Stella ⚓ What FIFO mining jobs in Australia are REALLY like ⚓ How much sailboats actually cost to own and maintain ⚓ The truth about living aboard full-time ⚓ How we make money while sailing around the world ⚓ YouTube income, sponsorships, and online work ⚓ The hardest parts of sailboat life nobody talks about ⚓ Why sailing can be both cheaper AND more expensive than normal life ⚓ Boat maintenance, haul-outs, diesel, repairs, insurance & hidden costs ⚓ Why we chose Indonesia and Southeast Asia for cruising ⚓ How surfing, freedom, and adventure changed our lives forever This lifestyle didn’t come from family money, trust funds, or luck. It came from years of hard work, sacrifice, risk-taking, and believing that life could be different if we were willing to work for it. Now we’re sailing through remote Indonesia, surfing empty waves, exploring untouched islands, living off solar power, fishing for food, and documenting every part of this journey here on YouTube. Some days are incredible. Some days are exhausting. But every single day feels like we’re actually living. Our first Boatyard Blues episode is now live. After four years of sailing Te Tāiko in the South Pacific, it was time to finally drop the rudder. We knew there was always a possibility we’d find corrosion once everything came apart… What we thought would be a reasonably straightforward boat job quickly turned into something much bigger. This lifestyle gives us some incredible experiences, but there’s also a lot of maintenance, uncertainty, and problem solving that comes with living aboard and sailing long distances. Join us as we begin working through the next chapter of Te Tāiko’s journey in Australia. Link to video: Thanks for watching! In this episode, we head back to Sant Agusti to escape a building southwesterly wind. The passage quickly turns into a rusty start-of-season reality check when we get a serious override on the winch and have to cut the jib sheet to free it! Once safely anchored, we go ashore for a quick grocery run and well-earned ice creams in town. Back on board, I swap out the membrane and housing on the watermaker — it’s now producing better than ever, but we still have a small leak to sort. Later, we meet up with Marcus on the water to collect our long-awaited parcels he brought all the way from Cartagena. And finally… after 10 days of waiting, Helios gets her zinc anodes back on! A bit of drama, some boat jobs, and plenty of cruising life in the Balearics. ▶️ If you enjoy real sailing, boat maintenance, and liveaboard adventures, please hit LIKE and subscribe! #SailingHelios #Liveaboard #BoatLife #MediterraneanSailing #SailBalearics #Watermaker #Sailing Episode S04E07 Recorded: Early May 2026 Viewer-first. Sometimes you have to swallow your pride and fix what went wrong. In this episode I show exactly how I did that. I'm back in the shop working through some mistakes from earlier in the build before moving on to an important milestone: epoxy taping all the inside seams of the Little Auk kayak. This step is crucial for waterproofing and structural integrity, and there's definitely a knack to getting clean, bubble-free tape runs inside a tight hull. In this episode I track down and correct the mistakes, then mix up the epoxy and get into the inside seam taping. I share some tips for working inside a small hull where space is tight. I use fiberglass tape in the fore and aft sections and carbon fiber in the cockpit area, and both require a very different approach. Whether you're building your own kayak or just along for the ride, I hope this episode gives you the confidence to tackle your own fixes and keep moving forward. In this episode, we take our final underwater breath in Fakarava before setting sail—though our destination kept shifting with every change in the wind. What followed was anything but routine. We sailed straight into a brutal storm that forced us to drop the sails and rely on the engines… which failed us yet again. After a month of relentless troubleshooting and zero progress, our frustration finally boiled over. Pushed to our breaking point, we had a conversation we never thought we’d have—seriously considering selling the boat right here in French Polynesia. #sailing #sailboatlife #liveaboard #fakarava #frenchpolynesia #sailingadventures #stormatsae #enginefailure #boatproblems #offshore #cruisinglife #liveaboardsailing #sailingcouple #roughseas #boatmaintenance NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Keeping up a routine of maintenance is essential to trouble free operations on the boat. Whether it is changing oil, or filters or impellers regular maintenance helps reduce the chance of breakdown to a minimum. In this video we are in Panama and preparing for the next leg of our journey of living aboard our Nordhavn 64.

If you’ve ever dreamed about leaving the dock, becoming a liveaboard sailor, and sailing around the world, this episode is for you! In this week’s liveaboard sailing adventure, we continue preparing our sailboat for the biggest journey of our lives as we get ready to cast off and explore the world by sailboat. From downsizing our belongings and making space onboard, to upgrading the tender with a new hydrofoil, every step brings us closer to full-time cruising life and offshore sailing adventures. Living on a sailboat means every inch of storage matters, so in this episode we start sorting through everything we own, getting rid of what we don’t need, and learning how to simplify life for long-term world travel by sailboat. Preparing a cruising sailboat for offshore passages takes planning, organisation, and plenty of hard work, and we’re bringing you along for every part of the journey. Whether you’re already a sailor, dreaming about becoming a liveaboard cruiser, or simply love travel and adventure videos, there’s something here for you. We also install a hydrofoil on our dinghy tender to improve performance and efficiency on the water. It’s an exciting sailboat upgrade that could make exploring anchorages and getting to shore even easier during our future sailing adventures around the world. Alongside all the boat projects and preparation, we also take time to celebrate Gav’s birthday onboard, reminding us why we chose this incredible sailing lifestyle in the first place. If you love liveaboard sailing, cruising life, sailboat refits, offshore sailing preparation, sailing couple adventures, and travelling the world by sailboat, make sure to subscribe and follow our journey. Our goal is to inspire others to chase freedom, adventure, and life at sea while sharing the real highs and challenges of preparing a boat for world cruising. The bulkheads are massive! In this episode of our wooden boat building journey, we return to Station 7 — the station we previously skipped due to a lack of quality Chechen wood. Now with Chechen marine triplay in hand, we tackle the largest bulkheads on the entire build, made extra tall by our 25cm cabin height raise. These aren't standard frames — each one is reinforced with an additional 20mm of glued wood on the inside for maximum strength where it matters most. Building a wood boat from scratch means every decision has consequences — and raising the cabin changed everything about how these bulkheads were designed and constructed. Whether you're planning your own DIY boat build or just love watching traditional woodworking in an unconventional setting, this one delivers. 🔨 In this video: • Station 7 — why we skipped it and why we're back • Extra-large bulkheads explained (25cm raised cabin impact) • 14mm Chechen marine triplay — material selection & cutting • Frame reinforcement — 20mm glued interior supports • What raising the cabin height really means for your build If you're following along with how to build a wooden boat, drop your questions below — happy to share what's working and what we'd do differently! 👍 Like, subscribe, and hit the bell to follow the full build from keel to launch. #WoodenBoatBuilding #BoatBuilding #DIYBoat #WoodBoat #BoatBuild #Bulkheads #ChechenWood #MarinePlywood #Woodworking #BoatConstruction #smallboat 00:00 Introduction 00:12 The largets bulkhead on this station 00:43 Raised cabin height with 25 cm 02:00 Description on station 7 03:44 Glueing extra 20 mm frame 03:47 Glueing the lower bulkheads 04:14 Floating Epoxy on the upper bulkheads 04:24 Applying the new better Epoxy on station 4 04:42 Applying the new Epoxy on station 5 04:46 Next video will be about the bow 04:56 Outro
