This week I tackle fixing and refinishing all the Hatches on Dagny. The main hatch was the main problem and this project took weeks to complete. This was, without a doubt, one of the hardest days we have experienced since setting off on our liveaboard sailing adventure — and the sail that brought Shezz to tears. Leaving Mackay Marina in Queensland, Australia, we knew the conditions were going to be challenging, but nothing quite prepared us for what was waiting offshore. As we headed north, the sea state quickly deteriorated and we found ourselves battling 3.5 to 4 metre standing waves, strong winds and incredibly rough conditions. This was some of the most intense sailing we have experienced so far on our journey around Australia. For anyone following our liveaboard sailing journey around the world, this episode gives a very real look at what life at sea can actually be like. Sailing isn't always turquoise water, perfect sunsets and gentle trade winds. Sometimes it is exhausting, uncomfortable, emotional and downright frightening — especially when you're living aboard a sailboat and the ocean decides to turn it on. With conditions becoming too difficult to continue safely, we made the decision to seek shelter overnight at Brampton Island. After a rough and emotional day at sea, getting safely anchored and having the boat protected from the worst of the conditions was an enormous relief. The following day brought a completely different side of Queensland sailing. We continued north through the spectacular Smith Islands, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Great Barrier Reef, before making our way to Shaw Island, where we finally dropped anchor for the night. This episode is a reminder that cruising and sailing around Australia comes with incredible highs and some very difficult lows. From rough seas and standing waves to stunning tropical islands and remote anchorages, this is the reality of our journey as we continue sailing north and working our way towards the Torres Strait and, eventually, Indonesia and beyond. Our very first sail began with crossing Caernarfon Bar in force 6 gusting 7, followed by a close-hauled sail across Cardigan Bay to Porth Dinllaen. Our DIY electric motor powered by Fogstar batteries, got us through the rough bar crossing and then against force 5 to 6 (gusting F7), breaking seas and tide into Porth Dinllean bay. For the sail we used a double reefed main and our staysail. That seemed about right. First time either has been used. We got breaking seas on deck, including covering the wheelhouse (we are very glad we have that). Delighted with the performance of Vida (1977 Rival 38, Centre Cockpit Ketch). In this episode, I discuss the importance of properly marking your overhanging sailboat or mast on a trailer both day and night. Any load extending 4 feet or more from the end of the trailer (overhang) is required to display a red or orange flag during the day, or a red light (visible from at least 500 feet away) at night mounted on the longest part of the load. This is a requirement in all 50 states and applies to recreational sailboats. Typically, the end of the mast is the longest part of the load and where the flag or light should be attached. I also cover additional (but not required) steps and ideas you can take to improve visibility and safety of your trailer when towing day or night. Trailers with overly long overhangs (8ft to 10ft or more depending on the state) have additional requirements--check your local state regulations. Our anchor dragged at midnight in Lanzarote, the windlass on our Lagoon 400 catamaran shattered, and I pulled thirteen tons of boat back up by hand in 28 knots of wind. It started so well. La Graciosa, the little Canary island with sand for streets and not a metre of tarmac, where as always we arrived knowing nothing — a place we could spend a week just waiting for the blonde's best friend Betta to arrive. The only problem was 25 knots, no matter what you do (and a shark circling the boat). So we sailed down to Playa Blanca on Lanzarote — three hours of champagne sailing and two of complete madness — where people told us the anchorage was beautiful. Very protected. I loved it. For 55 hours. Midnight. The anchor-drag alarm. We checked the other two systems, decided it was a setting, went back to sleep. Five minutes later it went off again — and this time we were moving. Re-anchoring in the dark in a full anchorage, the windlass didn't just stop working, it came apart, and the chain started running out on its own. Bare hands on 12 mm chain, the breakwater a metre off the stern, the dinghy line wrapped round a propeller so we were down to one engine, and about thirty metres of chain hauled back by hand while it blew 28. And Betta was arriving the next day. Perfect timing. The morning after: the whole anchor up by hand again, into the marina, my foot split open, the windlass in pieces on the bow — the worm gear had eaten every tooth off its cog — and the news that getting a windlass shipped to the Canary Islands takes ten days. So we rented scooters and saw Lanzarote: the Timanfaya lava fields, the vineyards of La Geria where every vine lives in its own hole, Teguise, Arrecife and its lagoon, and a winery that failed to convince me wine is anything other than vinegar with ambition. And then Cesare, Betta's husband, helped me fit the new one: an Italwinch vertical, 1500 W instead of the old 1000, €2,900 of shiny chrome. „Ich denke nicht, dass es allzu kompliziert wird.“ Das hab ich im Oktober 2025 gesagt. Zehn Monate später hängen 60 Rollen, fast 120 Kugellager und ein Seil quer durch die Bootshalle in Glückstadt. Und dann kommt der Moment der Wahrheit. Seit 2018 lässt mich eine Idee nicht los: eine Cable Cam, also eine Kamera, die von selbst am Seil fährt. Für Zeitraffer, die man sonst nicht sieht. Der erste Versuch damals ist gefahren, aber das Bild war unbrauchbar. Dann kam die Segelreise dazwischen. Mit meinem neuen 3D-Drucker war die Idee sofort wieder da. Und der Drucker selbst zeigt, wie es gehen könnte: Zwei Motoren und Riemen bringen den Druckkopf an jeden Punkt der Platte. Ich dachte: genau das, nur größer. Statt Riemen ein Seil, statt Schienen die ganze Halle, in der mein Boot steht. Also hab ich einfach angefangen, ohne Plan: Kästen aus selbst laminierten Basaltplatten, dazu Rollen, Halter und Stecker, selbst gezeichnet und gedruckt, und ein Computerkasten mit Raspberry Pi. An einem Abend im Dezember, um Viertel vor elf, ahne ich, dass die ganze Sache ein Riesenproblem hat. Ich baue trotzdem weiter. Dann kommt die Kinotour, und im Zug schreibe ich die Steuerung. Im August fahren Henry und ich nach Glückstadt und spannen alles auf. Kein Tutorial. Ein Video über Sturheit, ein Jahr Arbeit und die Frage, ob gescheitert dasselbe ist wie umsonst. In 2020, a storm wrecked my catamaran on the way to Hawaii. In 2023, we pulled sailors out of the water on the way to Panama. And last year, I nearly lost the keel on a sister ship of the Cheeki Rafiki, the Beneteau 40.7 that capsized in the North Atlantic in 2014 with four men aboard. This summer, boats have been going down worldwide. In August, an Oyster 825 racing at Hamilton Island Race Week reportedly struck a reef, lost her keel bulb, and turned upside down in seconds. All ten aboard were pulled out of the water. Then sperm whales holed a 52-footer north of Norfolk Island, and her crew spent the night in a life raft before a container ship picked them up. You’ll see how an adjustable backstay can flatten the mainsail, open the upper leech, reduce headstay sag, and help depower the boat as the wind builds. We also cover the important differences between masthead and fractional rigs, why some backstays should never be completely slack, and how backstay settings change in light air, medium air, heavy air, chop, and downwind sailing. Our journey begins with a quick scuba dive to untangle a fouled anchor. Then we set out on a rough multi day upwind passage with a lot of tacking against wind and currents. After several hundred miles of sailing we finally reach Wayag Raja Ampat, one of our dream destinations. Unfortunately we are told we must leave after just one day! We make the most of our short time there exploring the beautiful islands and reefs. We then continue against the prevailing wind to Waigeo under storm jib and find some class A scuba spots. After some minor boat maintenance we take our boat through the breathtaking ancient Kabui strait and explore the narrow caves with crystal blue water. I build some parts for the boat using 3d printing and carbon fiber. We visit the historic Wallace hut. At night we encounter a glowing flying fish that jumps into the cockpit and sprays bioluminescence splatters across the deck. After experiencing propeller trouble in Sorong we abandon our marina plan and anchor outside of town. The visit a papuan house museum and dress up for the part. How do you become a yacht designer when your starting point isn't a drawing board, but thousands of miles at sea? In this chapter of the Dashew Talking Books, Sue Grant sits down with Steve Dashew to explore how decades of sailing, cruising, building and maintaining boats shaped an entirely different approach to yacht design. The story begins long before the FPBs, with Steve and Linda Dashew's early high-performance multihulls and their move aboard the 50-foot Intermezzo. Going from fast cats to a conventional cruising yacht proved frustrating, but it also provided an education that would influence everything Steve designed afterwards. Experiences offshore reinforced one lesson in particular: performance wasn't simply about going faster. It could be an important part of safety. Steve recalls difficult passages, navigating by dead reckoning, close encounters with reefs and the realisation that reducing passage times could dramatically reduce exposure to weather, navigational uncertainty and risk.  Those experiences led to a deceptively simple question: what would we do differently next time? Steve explains how conversations between cruising sailors gradually developed into ideas for a new generation of offshore yachts. Materials, hull shape, engine rooms, ground tackle, refrigeration, maintenance and accessibility all became part of the same problem. As Steve puts it, when designing a yacht, "everything is related, and nothing is for free."  The conversation follows the evolution of that thinking through the early Deerfoot yachts, collaborations with designers and shipyards, and eventually the arrival of computer-aided design. Technology allowed Steve to take greater control of the process, not only drawing hull shapes but considering virtually every component, system, plumbing run and maintenance requirement before construction began. That attention to detail came from living with the boats. Equipment had to be accessible. Systems had to be repairable at sea. Structures had to survive the realities of offshore cruising. Even decisions that seemed excessive at the time, oversized anchors, additional access or apparently unnecessary conduits, were based on situations Steve and Linda had experienced themselves. Eventually, the same philosophy would lead from the Deerfoot sailing yachts to Wind Horse and the FPB series. This episode is the story of how Steve Dashew became a yacht designer, but more importantly, it's an exploration of why his boats were designed the way they were: not around convention, fashion or what had always been done, but around the realities of crossing oceans, maintaining a yacht far from home and keeping the people aboard safe. In this week's episode, I trailer my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat up to beautiful Grand Lake, Colorado for a day of Fall solo sailing. Grand Lake is Colorado's largest and deepest natural (non-reservoir) lake, covering 507 surface acres at an altitude of 8,369 feet above sea level. The forecast called for winds gusting to 23mph in the early afternoon, so I arrived early for a morning sail. I planned to leave the lake no later than 1pm to avoid the higher afternoon winds. We sailed our Lagoon 400 catamaran 269.9 nautical miles from Madeira to La Graciosa in the Canary Islands, and the autopilot died on the first night. The plan sounded great: a day and fourteen hours, a beam reach, two shipping corridors to cross, a metre and a half to two metres of sea. Four hours in, the preventer on the bowsprit broke — a part I bought in Portugal that, it turns out, is made of plastic. No code zero, no wind, motor-sail. At half past nine at night the autopilot switched itself off. I found a loose negative on the controller, decided that was it, and went to sleep. It was not it. The blonde and Sasha hand-steered through the night, keeping the moon in front of the boat. At one o'clock the next afternoon we were still fighting it. With help over the phone from the electronics shop that sold us our Furuno gear, the new theory was voltage: the autopilot was dropping to eight volts for a second and shutting down. So we borrowed the power line from the deck-wash pump, ran it to the autopilot, and switched it on. Forty-three hours after leaving Madeira, at six in the morning and still dark, we arrived at La Graciosa. Out on the water after dark, what you can’t see ahead of the bow can be the biggest danger. This week, we set out to give Isabella eyes in the night—and the result was remarkable. After mounting our new bow camera in the last video, we connected it to the Garmin 8610 chartplotter. That meant Karen climbing into the sail locker to pull the wires into the main cabin, then routing them under the bed, through and behind the head, beneath the salon cushions, and alongside the water-fill hose. For the final stretch into the cockpit, Steve even had to remove part of the ceiling. It was a demanding installation, but when darkness fell, the payoff was clear: the camera revealed what lay ahead of the bow, giving us a powerful new layer of safety for nighttime travel. Steve also rebuilt the control panel for the bow camera and the existing wiring that enters the cockpit. After all that pulling and tugging, Karen double-checked every connection. We’re happy to report that all the instruments are working and displaying properly. More than five years of DIY projects—are we crazy? Not at all. We’re simply continuing to add creature comforts, tackle upgrades, and keep Isabella in top shape. She was a great boat when we bought her, and we’re still finding ways to make her even better. It’s hard to believe we’ve been doing this for so many years and still enjoy both living and working aboard. In this episode, we reflect on a few realities of boat life and upgrades such as the accumulator that eases the workload on the freshwater pump and the reverse-cycle units that keep us comfortable in summer and winter. Of course, every project comes with a familiar sight: tools and materials spread across the salon floor, cushions, and navigation station. GETTING OFF-GRID Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. TALKING TO STRANGERS People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment. Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving. Back in the water… and already chasing problems. In this episode of Sailing Doodles, I’m trying to get Nauti Dogs ready to finally go sailing, but there’s still a long list of jobs to knock out first. I investigate the engine alarm that went off right after launch, replace the alternator belt, and track down a frustrating water leak buried in one of the worst possible places on the boat. Fixing that leak meant crawling upside down and backwards into an incredibly tight space — definitely one of the more claustrophobic repairs I’ve done on this boat. There’s plenty more maintenance, troubleshooting, and last-minute preparation as I get everything ready for the next leg of the adventure. After more than two years away, I’m finally back aboard my sailboat — and it’s time to find out what still works.
