Free Nav Rules Course - https://www.nauticed.org/powerboating-courses/view/navigation-rules-for-powerboats?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=lSg1tKSKTEk New England Propeller - https://neprop.com Prop strike after hitting a rock or the bottom? This guide explains why you should NOT DIY a prop repair and what to do next. The damage you can’t see—pitch shift, blade alignment, balance/runout—can quickly lead to vibration, lower-unit wear (outboard/sterndrive), or cutlass-bearing damage (inboard). Home tools can’t measure pitch/balance accurately; a professional prop shop uses pitch blocks, runout gauges, and balancing equipment and provides before/after reports so you know it’s right. What we cover: - Don’t DIY: Grinding material off a blade makes imbalance and weakens the prop - Hidden damage: Pitch moved, blade alignment off, hub issues—even if it looks “okay” Inspect after a strike: - Outboard/IO: prop, edges, hub, lower unit (leaks, noise, metal in oil) - Inboard: prop, shaft, strut, rudder, cutlass bearing (play/heat) - Aluminum vs stainless: Aluminum with big metal missing is often not cost-effective to repair Stainless is pricier and more repairable—worth professional work - Twin props: If one looks bent, “just check” the other—often both need work - Fix it promptly: Running with vibration accelerates wear and raises costs - What a shop does: Measure pitch, correct alignment, true & balance; provide pre/post reports Quick After-Strike Checklist: Stop DIY ideas—no hammers, torches, or grinding Visual check: nicks, bends, cracks, missing edge, cup/rake distortion Spin test: obvious wobble/runout at blade tips Lower unit / seal check (OB/IO): new drips, milky/metallic oil, noise Inboard gear: shaft straightness, strut alignment, cutlass bearing play Bring it in: ask the prop shop for measurement + balance and a report FAQ Can I repair a bent boat prop at home? No. Without pitch blocks and balancing, you risk worse vibration and drivetrain damage. How do I know if my prop is too damaged to fix? Large metal loss on aluminum is often a replace call. Stainless can usually be repaired by a shop. What symptoms show hidden prop/shaft damage? New vibration bands, loss of WOT RPM, leaks at seals, heat at cutlass bearing, metal in gear oil. Why fix it quickly after a prop strike? Running out of balance stresses the lower unit, bearings, seals, and mounts, increasing repair costs. 00:00 - Intro 00:16 - Fixing it Yourself 00:39 - Vibration Wear 00:57 - After Strike Checklist 01:10 - How Damaged is To Damaged 01:33 - Damage You Can't See 02:09 - Outro #powerboat #boating #boat

Today’s project on Alaskan Gypsy in the shipyard is a deep dive into the practical reality of welding new through-hulls in a steel sailboat hull. Our first project is cutting out and welding in a plug plate to cleanly remove on old abandoned through hull. We then install two new through-hulls in a new section of plate we installed in an earlier episode. I prep, fit, and weld in new schedule 80, and schedule 40 standpipes — each one beveled, aligned, and burned in with 6011 roots and 7018 cover passes. This episode walks through every stage of the process: A little hole saw trick for a template jig to plug an abandoned through hull. Marking the hull, cutting the pilot holes, setting up for overhead welds, checking penetration, grinding and cleaning, and finishing the exterior for primer. Along the way, I talk about amperage choices, puddle control, heat management, and a few of the surprises that come with working under a 55-ton steel schooner. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the kind of work that keeps an old ship alive. If you’re into DIY boatbuilding, welding, or steel boat maintenance — or just enjoy watching slow, honest progress in a shipyard — you’ll feel right at home here. • Intro & project overview • Inspecting the old through-hulls • Capping off an abandoned through-hull with a circular plug • Layout and measuring new standpipe locations • Cutting and beveling the hull openings • Welding setup, safety, and materials • Root pass and tie-ins (6011) • Cover passes and overhead work (7018) • Grinding and surface prep • Leak check and inspection • Wrap-up & lessons learned #SteelSailboat #BoatRefit #ThroughHull #Welding #ShipyardLife #AlaskanGypsy #DIYBoatRepair #Boatbuilding #Liveaboard #AlaskaViking

This true story, and dozens more like it, are in my book Be The Captain 👉 https://www.bethecaptain.com This is a true sailing story about what happens when a solo sailor falls asleep offshore. I’ve been through two different boat crashes, both from fatigue, and each taught me hard lessons about seamanship, preparation, and the realities of sailing offshore. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you fall asleep while sailing, or how to prevent it, this is a story you need to hear. 🗺 About Be The Captain It’s not a sailing book — it’s a captain’s manual for real life at sea. Every chapter is drawn from thousands of miles offshore, from heavy weather to leadership, anchoring, maintenance, and self-reliance. If you connected with this story, you’ll find the whole system in Be The Captain. 📘 Get your copy here → bethecaptain.com

Howdy folks — Mark here from Nomad Boatbuilding. Wooden boatbuilders are often called craftsmen, artists, or engineers — but most days, I feel more like a problem solver. In this video, I tackle a tricky challenge: fiberglassing a glued-lapstrake wooden hull using WEST SYSTEM epoxy products. Lapstrake planking has deep ridges and overlaps that make traditional fiberglassing nearly impossible. My solution? Applying fiberglass tape to each plank individually and finishing it with peel ply (release fabric) to speed up the process and improve the finish. Along the way, I share: ⚓ How to use WEST SYSTEM 105 Resin and 207 Hardener for glassing ⚓ Why fiberglass tape beats cloth for lapstrake hulls ⚓ The benefits of peel ply for smooth, sand-ready finishes ⚓ Tips for mixing, applying, and trimming epoxy cleanly ⚓ Lessons learned the hard way (like forgetting to trim before full cure 😅) This method made the job faster, cleaner, and more durable — perfect for boats that live on a mooring or get hauled up on rocky beaches. If you enjoy traditional boatbuilding, epoxy work, and creative problem-solving in the shop, you’ll love this one. 💡 WEST SYSTEM Epoxy Resources 👉https://www.westsystem.com/ for manuals, selection guides, and tech support. ⚙️ SUPPORT THE CHANNEL 👍 Like • 💬 Comment • 🔔 Subscribe • 💙 Join me on Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding #Boatbuilding #WoodenBoats #Fiberglassing #Lapstrake #Epoxy #WestSystem #NomadBoatbuilding #BoatRestoration #Woodworking #Sailing #MaritimeCraftsmanship #DIYBoatbuilding

My supervisor is watching me. It turns me on and is hard to keep my manhood from responding. I love peeling tape off of a newly painted surface. Forever working on Isabella. It's satisfying but a little too much sometimes. Watching Karen polish the stainless steel is certainly fun for me and she enjoys how it shines afterwards. LED lights last a long time but also fail prematurely. Replacing with a WaveOne multi-color light certainly brightens up the salon. More maintenance. We're trying to trace down a very subtle leak. We know there is one because our accumulator is working properly and our water pump comes on to refill it even when a faucet is not being used. What is an accumulator? Fresh water systems on a boat include a holding tank, a water pump, and a device to reduce the amount of time the pump runs when using water. This is the job of an accumulator. Ours is a 2 gallon tank with a pressurized diaphragm. This enables the ability to turn on a faucet without the pump running every time. We certainly need a better storage system for pots and pans. Digging out our wok takes a bit of time but the stir fry we make with it is worth the effort. Thanks for subscribing! It means a lot to us. ❤️😘❤️ Musical Attributes: Daniel Gunnarsson - The Storm Inside Par 50's - You Shine on Me You can also follow us: https://linktr.ee/sailingintermission #SailingCouple #dancing #wok #manhood #BoatLife #Mikado56 #SailingIntermission #maintenance

This week aboard our sailboat was all about progress — tackling a mix of big and small refit projects to keep our boat seaworthy and ready for adventure! 🔧 Project 1: We measured for new sheaves in the boom and mast, and for new turnbuckles and jaws for our standing rigging — important steps toward a smoother and safer rig. 📡 Project 2: We mapped out the path and measured the VHF cable run, crawling through deck lockers and under the nav desk to trace every inch. 💧 Project 3 (The Big One): A leaking valve repair turned into a major fiberglass project. Working in tight spaces, we cut out the old valve and glassed in a new fiberglass tube. Using a balloon to apply pressure kept epoxy under control — messy but effective! The leak is finally sealed, and the job’s done. 🚰 Project 4: We continued the PEX plumbing installation for the freshwater system into the galley — another step toward completing the refit. After a week of hard work, fiberglass dust, and plenty of crawling into tight spaces, it feels great to see real progress on the boat. Entre temps, le vent est revenu 🙌🏼 🇳🇿🇺🇸 // “Some prisons don’t have walls, just a wide blue sky…” 🌤️ A real emotional rollercoaster this morning aboard MSIG Europe. Trapped in a high pressure bubble, Conrad and Mathieu found themselves completely swallowed by a windless zone. Not a breath, not a knot, just a stunning sunrise, which somehow became (almost) frustrating for two competitors like them… 😅 So they made the most of it: a first shower in a week, a bit of rest, and some maintenance work to “bring a fresh perspective for the next stretch of their adventure.” And the good news? The wind is finally back! 🌬️💪🏼 Social medias : Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/conradcolmanoceanracing Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/conradcolman

We are Eric, Kimberley, and Distin. We are from Alaska. We started our adventures in Alaska on our Nordhavn 55. We sold her and are now beginning our adventures on a new to us Nordhavn 50. In this episode of we cruise into Halifax, Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s most historic and vibrant coastal cities! We start by exploring the northwest arm of Halifax, checking out the viable anchorage spots for cruisers and liveaboards. Then we tie up at what might just be on the most rolly dock we’ve ever been on — seriously, it was wild! 😂 After securing the boat, we head ashore to explore downtown Halifax, do some shopping, and pick up a brand new drone for epic aerial footage. We spend the next couple of days soaking up Halifax’s waterfront attractions, taking a self-guided historical building tour, and (of course) enjoying amazing local food. From drone practice over the harbor to wandering the charming waterfront, this episode is packed with classic boat life adventures in Atlantic Canada. Guest stars: Larry, Beth, Willie, and Pebbles. If you’re dreaming of living on board a Nordhavn or buying a Nordhavn for bluewater cruising, this video offers a firsthand look at the challenges and rewards of long-term boat life. We’ll take you behind the scenes to see how we manage real-life boating situations—from maintenance issues to steering failures—and offer tips for anyone planning to live aboard or buy a Nordhavn. These are our adventures on our Nordhavn. How we live and where we go. Thanks for following along with our adventures! In this video, we’re taking on a whole new boat project, as we start to build custom carbon fiber tables for our catamaran. Since our old rear cockpit table was another warranty fail, and the upstairs one is less than impressive, we decided to do some boat DIY and make new tables. Instead of teak or fiberglass, we've gone carbon fiber and foam, designed to be lightweight, strong, and perfectly suited for life at sea. You’ll see how we shape the foam cores, reinforce the hinge areas, and prep everything for a flawless carbon layup. One table folds neatly away to save space, while the other features a custom, non-standard shape designed specifically for coach-roof. 👉 SUPPORT THE STORY TELLING ⛵ Gain access to our member only area: https://www.travelsketchsailing.com/join-in 😎 Tip jar: https://buy.stripe.com/6oE8A1d9Yabj4OA9AB After backpacking Asia, road tripping Europe and doing a bit of van life, we’re now exploring the world aboard our Leopard 45 catamaran. In this episode of Sailing Astrid the Wombat, we’re breaking down the real haul out costs and sailboat maintenance expenses involved in getting our boat ready to sail around the world. Whether you’re a future liveaboard sailor, a current boat owner, or just curious about the true costs of sailing life, this video dives deep into the dollars and details behind our latest haul out. We’ve spent months preparing our 1990 Beneteau Oceanis 430 — Astrid the Wombat — for blue water adventures, and this haul out was a major milestone. From antifouling paint to through-hull replacements, prop maintenance, and bottom cleaning, we reveal exactly what it costs to haul out a 43-foot sailboat and make her ocean-ready. We’ll walk you through each step of the process: lifting the boat out of the water, inspecting the hull, replacing worn fittings, and tackling those essential upgrades every liveaboard cruiser eventually faces. If you’ve ever wondered, “How much does it cost to maintain a sailboat?” or “What does a boatyard haul out actually involve?” — this episode has the answers. This transparent cost breakdown includes both DIY sailboat projects and professional boatyard services, showing you where you can save money and where it’s worth paying for expert help. It’s a must-watch for anyone planning long-term cruising, full-time liveaboard life, or simply trying to budget for their next sailing adventure. ULTIMA 55: Sleek and Stable Speed stems from its streamlined architecture and a foil system that enables high cruising speeds with efficient fuel use. The flat carbon deck keeps the boat light. With various propulsion options available, the ULTIMA 55 can exceed speeds of 40 knots. Comfort is central, with a semi-open saloon linking indoor and outdoor spaces. The aft deck’s fold-down platforms extend the beam to 7,6m and provide room for relaxing and water sports, with easy access to toys, a fridge, and an ice maker. Below deck, the yacht provides a master suite, a VIP stateroom, and a crew cabin, all finished to Sunreef’s luxury standards. Advanced technology includes the Sunreef WETRA Intelligent Automation System. Developed in-house, it collects information from multiple systems, ensuring an easy overview and centralized management of the yacht’s operations. Future WETRA innovations will include AI-optimized preventive maintenance. The ULTIMA 55 exemplifies a powercat that balances sporty performance with lavish comfort and cutting-edge technology, crafted to deliver an elevated yachting experience.

In this episode, I repair the tilt function on my 2019 Torqeedo 1103C electric outboard. Multiple welds on the tilt lever failed making the outboard difficult to lock in the tilted (up) position. The lever would either fail to lock or get jammed when lowering the outboard. I ordered the replacement part direct from Torqeedo for $21 USD. Installation was easy and only took a few minutes. This is the first issue I've had with my Torqeedo outboard after 5 seasons of sailing.   Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #sailingdinghy #usedboat #boatrepair #Torqeedo

🐚 Ma liste d’envies Amazon est ici : https://www.amazon.fr/hz/wishlist/ls/27GJNNHN2SJG1?ref_=wl_share #JoyEnMer #Voilier #RénovationBateau #DIYNautique #TravauxBateau #PanneauxSolaires #Navigation #bricolage #SailingLife #Voile #Bateau #Plaisance

We've tested, learned, and challenged almost every idea we've had about life at sea. And somewhere between the engine rooms, stabilizers, and wind generators, we discovered what really matters for our next chapter. This isn’t just about finding a boat, it’s about choosing the right tool for the adventure ahead. One strong enough for icy fjords, self-sufficient enough for remote destinations, and (hopefully) small enough that we can still handle it just the two of us. ___________________________ WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity. We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us. Things We're Most Curious About... GETTING OFF-GRID Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. TALKING TO STRANGERS People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment. Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving. ALTERNATIVE LIVING These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community. This week aboard Moor R & R, Episode 12 we’re back in Airlie Beach to restock the boat, give her a good clean, and pick up a few essentials (including our usual stop at Bunnings, of course!). Next, we haul out at Shute Harbour for some maintenance — but it’s definitely not the kind of haul out we’re used to! Boat life throws us another little challenge when our tender battery goes flat, sending us back to Airlie Beach for a quick fix. Once everything’s sorted, it’s time to get back to the good stuff — exploring! We spend a few incredible days at South Molle Island, hiking and biking the 14 km of trails with absolutely stunning views. Then we find our own little piece of paradise — a quiet bay all to ourselves — before heading to Lindeman Island, where we stumble across something truly special: two turtles mating right beside the boat. 🐢💙 It’s been a week full of surprises, challenges, and magical moments — just another chapter in our sailing adventure aboard Moor R & R! Come along for the highs and lows of life at sea – the joy of community, the challenge of sailing, and all the fun we get up too !!! If you’d like to support our journey and get behind-the-scenes content, early access, and more, you can join our crew and love to welcome you aboard. Our island-hopping journey through the Canary Islands continues as we set sail from Tenerife to La Gomera. The crossing takes us through one of the well-known acceleration zones where the trade winds funnel between the islands — giving us a fun, fast sail before reaching the calm wind shelter of La Gomera. We drop anchor in Laguna de Santiago, our first glimpse of this unique island, before discovering a hidden bay that truly takes our breath away. Towering cliffs, lava-carved caves, and a canyon that leads to stunning views — this place feels untouched and full of magic. Along the way, we meet a couple living off-grid in an old fishing bay, a reminder of how many ways there are to live a meaningful life connected to nature. We are a sailing couple living full-time on our Hallberg Rassy Rasmus, documenting our life on the water from the Mediterranean to Morocco and now through the Canary Islands. Untie the Lines is about living simply, following curiosity, and finding beauty in the small, authentic moments of life at sea. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. This video shows the complete process of building our composite hatches, from the 3D printed custom molds to the final lamination. We demonstrate how we created two separate 3D printed molds—one for the hatch lid and one for the gutter/frame—and walk through the entire build sequence: mold preparation, gel coating, fiberglass lamination, and post-processing. Winter Sailing Tips for Diehards - https://www.practical-sailor.com/boat-maintenance/winter-sailing-tips-for-diehards The sailing world is buzzing — Catalina Yachts has halted production, Tartan Yachts has new owners, and one man now controls some of America’s most legendary sailboat brands. In this video, we take a deep dive into Michael Reardon, founder and CEO of Daedalus Yachts, the man behind the recent wave of acquisitions that brought Catalina Yachts, Tartan Yachts, Freedom Yachts, and True North under one roof. We’ll look at Reardon’s background in carbon-fiber yacht building, his bold claims of reviving U.S. manufacturing, and the growing concern across the sailing community about what’s really happening behind factory doors in Florida and Ohio. It’s been one month since we officially became liveaboard sailors! In this episode, we share what life is really like living full-time aboard our 1990 Beneteau Oceanis 430 — Astrid the Wombat. From daily boat life to fixing leaks and hosting our first guests, this video gives an honest look into the challenges and rewards of living aboard a sailboat. We start the week by tackling one of the many boat maintenance jobs — resealing the front hatch on our sailboat’s forward locker. A leaky hatch is no fun when you live on the water, so we roll up our sleeves and get to work, learning more about DIY sailboat maintenance as we go. But it’s not all work and no play! We also welcome our first visitors aboard Astrid, sharing laughs, stories, and a few drinks while taking in the beautiful Moreton Bay views. And to top it off, we celebrate a birthday on board, marking another milestone in our sailing adventure and reminding ourselves why we chose this lifestyle in the first place — freedom, simplicity, and a life connected to the sea. If you’ve ever dreamed of living on a sailboat, sailing around the world, or simply want to know what everyday boat life looks like, this episode is for you. We’re documenting our journey from total beginners to full-time cruisers, learning something new about our boat, sailing, and ourselves every day. In this episode: – Sailboat maintenance: resealing a hatch – Our first guests aboard – Birthday celebrations on a boat – What we’ve learned after one month of liveaboard life Join us every week as we share our adventures, challenges, and triumphs while sailing and exploring the world aboard Astrid the Wombat. Join us to see the challenges as we continue to learn to sail, prepare our boat and make changes so our boat feels like a home. We are moving onboard in just a few weeks so our sailing dream is getting closer and closer. Belki birbirimize yeni fikirler veririz 🌿⚓️ 👩🏻‍✈️👨🏻‍✈️ Sosyal Medya📱 İnstagram: eleven11sailing Facebook: eleven11sailing #TekneTemizliği #YelkenliHayatı #Denizcilik #BoatLife #YelkenliTürkiye #AmatörDenizci #KarcherOCFoldable #TekneBakımı #BasınçlıSuKovası #ZincirTemizliği #PratikÇözümler #DoğaDostuTemizlik #PortablePressureWasher #temizlik #basınçlısu #kova #taşınabilirtemizlik #temizlikkovası #karcher

This week aboard Arabella, we’re settling into our new home for the winter—the small but mighty harbor of Corner Brook, Newfoundland 🇨🇦. While many have asked, “Why would you want to live on a sailboat through a Newfoundland winter?” we’re here to show you exactly why! From hooking up to shore power and exploring the local community to chasing snow and ice climbing adventures, Corner Brook truly ticks every box for us. ❄️⛷️ This week, Steve takes you along a rugged hike to Cedar Cove, where a massive grounded cargo ship—the MSC Baltic III—has become an unexpected landmark — and shares the wild story behind its wreck. Then, join us for a 700-foot multi-pitch rock climb, Fortress of Solitude, on their anniversary, complete with drone footage, loose rock, and a perfect “money pitch” finish high above the Newfoundland coast. 🧗‍♀️🧗‍♂️ -------------------------- 📍 In This Episode: 00:00 – Why we’re overwintering in Corner Brook 03:15 – Exploring Cedar Cove & the grounded cargo ship 07:40 – Driftwood huts, salvage operations & wildlife finds 10:10 – Our anniversary multi-pitch climb on Bearhead Trail 15:20 – The “money pitch” & wrapping up an epic climb -------------------------- Episode #367 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A!
