Ep 48 – Provision Boxes Galore / Sailing Free Spirit We have some wasted space between the floor beams and the hull… since there is never enough storage space on a boat for food – Andy made 4 new provision boxes that will hold more supplies for our voyages. This will come in handy as we start our adventure however, in the meantime, its wonderful to just try it out and see just how much food and snacks we can actually fit on the boat. This is definitely a good thing and it’s actually a pretty good amount of space. Box 1 is filled with snacks, cookies, chips, candy etc, Box 2 is filled with juice and jarred food, including Peanut butter and jelly, Box 3 is pasta, rice and side dishes, Box 4 – currently has soda however, this will be replaced by something else later as we just needed to soda and drinks out of the way while we are still working on the boat. All financial contributions (or items purchased on Amazon) are tax deductible for your US income tax returns for full face and/or retail value. You contribution helps us to continue with project and support events to help us engage with our veterans thru events such as day sailings, working on the boat to help with projects and social gatherings. If Pete Burling and Nathan Outteridge thought they were going to have it easy sailing the LEQ12 AC40 against the one-design AC40, they were sorely mistaken. Josh Junior and Leonard Takahashi absolutely took the fight to the established AC75 helms in a thrilling afternoon of pre-start two-boat practice off Takapuna on the North Shore of Auckland that offers a real glimpse of what we can expect to see come the AC40 pre-regattas in Vilanova i La Geltrú and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia later on this year. Entering an imaginary starting ‘box’ from opposite ends of the line, various tactics were deployed by both crews – on occasion it was ‘run and hide’ with a timed run back to the line and on others it was full-on boat-on-boat action with the highly manoeuvrable AC40s being perfect match-race craft. The game in town was to get the other off the foils as the speed differential is simply massive and Josh Junior and Leo Takahashi were asking serious questions of Pete and Nathan all afternoon in a dying light and a north-easterly that barely broke double digits. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

This channel would not exist if it wasn't for Jeff Bezos and Amazon delivering all the essential equipment I need to film these boats for you. So when he overtook me in his fancy new yacht the other day with the Damen Support Yacht in tow it immediately set off my imagination! With a set up like his I would literally carry tenders for different occasions and this Franscher 1017GT would be the fancy date night boat. The boat to drop me off at the restaurant on the Grand Canal in Venice - that's the vibe I was getting. Modern Gentlemans Racer is the best way to describe this Frauscher 1017GT and cool - sexy - powerful was how this boat made me feel. You really just need to watch the video to appreciate the beauty of this design as words just won't do her justice. Future classic right here people - enjoy! When you have one of the world’s elite coaches in your team, it’s no surprise as a sailor to find yourself pushed way outside of your comfort zone. Yesterday out on the Bay of Cagliari, Philippe Presti who’s CV reads two Olympic Games, a couple of Finn Gold Cups, the 2007 America’s Cup with Luna Rossa and two further Cups with the Americans, had the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team on edge using the Chase Boat as competition with Shannon Falcone driving it hard. Talking about the session afterwards he commented: “The big difference is you don't have the wind shadow of the Chase Cat but you have the propeller wake and the foils are not very happy into this white water behind the boat, so that's a little bit the downside, but the rest of it you know we try to simulate races and encourage the communication on board and make decisions, have plans, you know, business as usual.” Section 41. Emirates Team New Zealand are busy packing up the AC75 before loading it on a ship and heading up to Barcelona but in a mammoth team effort, still found time to launch the team’s AC40 is strict one-design mode for young Leo Takahashi to get vital time behind the wheel alongside Josh Junior who is very much leading the Youth & Women’s America’s Cup development programme. It was a big day on the water with 14 knots initially before dropping to a more manageable 12 knots but still plenty to challenge the sailors over a two-hour session. The Kiwis brought out a new mainsail addition with a very useful window being inserted on both of the skins which will be vital when the two-boat testing that is scheduled for later this week takes place. Josh Junior came to the interview post sailing full of enthusiasm for the AC40 and revealed just how hard the team were pushing the auto-pilot limits and engaging the anti-rudder stall. Some dramatic pre-start moves were shown with the helms scalloping the AC40 and really throwing it around in the 2-minute sequences. Great interview with one of the top foiling sailors in the world today.

The relentless testing programme goes on for INEOS Britannia in Palma with a growing sense that the team are making significant progress all round and thoroughly enjoying the new performance profile of their prototype LEQ12 ‘T6.’ Certainly, on the water, the sailors look sublime and their boat handling as they rifle through testing modes dictated by this technology-first campaign that to the naked eye look uncomfortable, is to be applauded. So comfortable are the test team now with ‘T6’ that it's noticeable how hard they can push through the tests and when given the green-light to free-sail, look imperious. Big gains being made, and it shows. Today out on what looked like an unpromising Bay of Palma, it was anything but, as the skies cleared and a beautiful sea-breeze filtered in, delivering 14-17 knots later in the afternoon on this mammoth 5-hour data gathering day. ‘T6’ is arguably the most analysed boat in this America’s Cup cycle and everywhere you look there are cameras and sensors capturing every tiny piece of data they can. So, the opportunity to speak with Will Bakewell, the INEOS Britannia Data and Test Lead, was one not to be missed and talking about his role on the water, Will offered: “On a sailing day it's very much about trying to run the tests in a manner that’s as methodical and scientific as possible and then trying to trying to make sure that it's annotated and described well for everyone back here analysing (in Palma) and back at the factory (in Brackley, Northamptonshire) analysing to do their work… there are some things that are far more subjective that we have to rely on the sailors to give us the feedback on, and there's other things which the sailors absolutely can't give us feedback on and we can only measure so it totally depends what we are looking at.” Section 41. How do I launch and land my DJI Mavic 2 Zoom drone from my sailboat, WHILE solo sailing? In this video I'm going to show you exactly how I do it and give you any advice I can along the way. I've been flying this particular drone from my boat for the past two years without ever crashing it. *I ended up crashing my drone just a few hours after filming this video. Barcelona was at its most challenging on Tuesday with building conditions and a nasty swell delivered on a Llevant wind from the east and for Alinghi Red Bull Racing it was perhaps their most challenging day sailing the AC40. A number of near capsizes and one full capsize that saw crew-members in the water as they tried to attach the tow-line were the headliners but more importantly, the technique of sailing in big waves and 20 knots of breeze was tested to the max. The key is all in slowing the boat down off the wind to stop the bow digging into the waves and using boat boards to keep speed under check. Bryan Mettraux, trimming from the port side on the team’s now LEQ12 AC40, breaks down the day for us and talks through the various pitch and ride height that the team were trying to achieve as well as new sail trim downwind with a deeper mainsail setting. Bryan describes the day as “difficult at the end but we have to learn how to sail the boat in these conditions” so for sure, he saw value in what was a tricky day of testing on the new Tubercle foil. Alinghi Red Bull Racing are scheduled to sail for the rest of this week.

A very short day for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli as the team opted for safety first after hearing noises coming off the jib track soon after a tow out offshore having been released and then hitting a wave-crest at pace. It certainly wasn’t the most challenging conditions that the team have faced in recent weeks but safety first, and the call was made to tow back to shore to fully examine the issue after the on-water technicians called it early having been down below for inspection. The Italians were back on the dock just an hour and twenty minutes after leaving and speaking afterwards Horacio Carabelli, the Design Chief at Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli was unfazed by the incident saying: “It was pretty windy and it was going to keep coming up, the wind and the waves, so it was pretty on the limit for us and we sailed a little bit on it and then we had a little bit of a noise with one of our systems and just decided to call the day to understand a little bit better where the noise came from. It's a pretty routine thing when you hear something on these kinds of boats and tomorrow and the rest of the week seem to be very good so why not come back and then keep going for the rest of the week for improvement and go ahead in our development and what we're trying to achieve with this boat for the week?” Section 41. Making the most of a Monday morning weather window, Emirates Team New Zealand launched their LEQ12 AC40, with its new starboard foil, early and docked-out just before 7.30am with a schedule that was very much dictated by the design office. Pushing hard, Nathan Outteridge and Pete Burling, entered into some desperately tight pre-start circling and at times, particularly at the beginning opf the session got ragged with sky-rockets and broaches. Speaking afterwards Blair Tuke, who was on trim and manual flight control today admitted: “I think we still just trying to get to grips with it. Josh (Junior) and his team are going pretty good, they’ve been getting some good training in, so we're trying to get ourselves ready to have some pre-start action with them in the coming days so yeah and also it's just good to see that foil and the different foils side to side and study different characteristics so yeah it was a bit of fun but yeah we certainly weren't always in control today but i think we got better and better as the day went on and you know got (a new) top speed so it was good speed.” Section 41. They called off the planned Friday session due to some unseasonal conditions in Palma but a new week and the INEOS Britannia team were back out in the Bay to put in a solid sail and foil testing schedule in a building breeze. ‘T6’ – the team’s LEQ12 prototype platform looked bang on the money today with superb technique on display from Giles Scott and Dylan Fletcher-Scott sailing her like an International Moth with plenty of windward heel and desperately low-flight upwind ‘bustle-skimming’ to get the end-plating effect. Always worth listening to, Dylan Fletcher-Scott broke down the day and talked through the sail programme – we saw the underused J3 for a while today – and the shapes that the sailors are generating to hit the pre-ordained target speeds. Dylan looks forward to the week ahead as the British schedule continues before serious design and systems decisions are taken for the boat they are dubbing ‘RB3’ – the team’s one-build AC75 for the America’s Cup in Barcelona. The British look rock-solid at the moment and continue their momentum from a very productive May in Palma. More to come this week, weather conditions permitting. Section 41. Steep waves with a short period can be the most uncomfortable conditions to drive in a boat so in this video we test the Prestige M48 in 1 - 2m of steep waves with a very short period between them. As I was spending the weekend in a Prestige 680 it was very surprising to discover the master cabin on this 50ft boat competes with the master on a 680! If you have Med cruising in mind this boat could be a very interesting option for you to consider! Caribbean too! Join me for this opportunistic test which came about thanks to the great team from Ancasta Marine in the Balearic Islands. After spending 4 days with Matt and his crew and understanding how well set up they are in this part of the world I would not hesitate to recommend speaking with these guys if Med cruising is on your bucket list! What an amazing destinaiton to escape the Southern Hemisphere winter and with a boat like this you have space and privacy for all your guests. Please Enjoy. Race pace intensity noticeably ramped up for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli on Monday as the Italians took to the waters off Cagliari in near-perfect conditions of flat water and sea-breeze to really start pushing tight manoeuvres and time-on-distance. After an initial foil data gathering exercise on straight-lines, the Chase Boats threw in the customary marks and created a short course with tight boundaries and placed the fully instrumented Chase Boat 1 on the course as opposition. This is a technique honed from AC36 in the lead up to the 2021 regatta that Philippe Presti, the team’s coach, perfected shadowing the AC75 and made major gains in boat positioning and handling as the Chase Boat puts the sailors under serious pressure. Out in Cagliari, and with six people onboard at times, the Chase Boat was pushing hard and demanding more and more from the team. Shannon Falcone, the on-water Operations Manager for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli described the technique saying: “The racecourse is so small with the boundaries and everything and with Chase 1 you basically sail like you're sailing a boat, so you've got targets, true wind angles, you’ve got all the instrumentation onboard to sail as if you were sailing the race boat and in the manoeuvres you drop the speed so you're not gaining too much in the manoeuvres and so on and you just try to basically be on it. The good thing is I've got a great team - Max (Sirena) calling tactics you know Gilo (Nobili) navigating, Mickey calling relatives so just feels like you know we can really bring it to the boys and show them how it's done.” Section 41. With three seasons in one day, Cagliari was proving a tricky mistress from a weather perspective but it’s these kinds of days that wins you the America’s Cup. Training onboard the rapid-looking LEQ12 in light, fluky and patchy conditions, the Italians needed the assistance of the Chase Boat team to get flying in order to push through a light-weather test schedule where technique was rewarded. The premium on accurate flight control was high and Vittorio Bissaro, one of the ever-present members of the Luna Rossa Flight Control team on both the LEQ12 and AC40 spoke about a day where his concentration was firmly on “keeping the bow out of the water…and the rudder immersed.” Vittorio is perfectly placed to talk about the new wing and give a colourful and interesting assessment of the profile: “I wouldn’t say it’s easier” was how he concluded on that subject. When pushed about the various roles on the boat and what each person’s individual role is onboard, Vittorio was tight-lipped. These are crucial systems arrangements and the Itlainas are giving nothing away – quite rightly. Fascinating interview with one of the best Flight Controllers in this America’s Cup cycle. Section 41. Bow on with windward heel, there are few sights as good as seeing Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s beautiful LEQ12 barrelling upwind at breakneck speeds, but it was a tricky weather day today for the Italians in Cagliari with lighter winds either side of a sea breeze that called for different technique – one that they showed more than adept at handling. Hamish Wilcox the team sailing coach described the conditions saying: “Yeah it was tricky you know we had more than we expected for a while which was nice, the day didn't look too promising at all actually, there’s rain around so quite cold as you notice so the sea-breeze was really struggling to develop and in the end in fact I think we had something of a little push out of the clouds and some sort of shower and rain and then the breeze kind of eddied all the way into the Bay, so it was a lot of different things happening out there.” Section 41.

Getting a sailboat ready to support our family off-grid for months at a time is no easy feat. And for the past week the boat’s been on the hard and I’ve been doing some back breaking work. But we’ve only got 7 more days to finish all these projects before we’re scheduled to splash, and there is still a ton of work to be done. Sir Ben Ainslie came back to Palma today to join the sailing team and thoroughly test through the new foil configurations on ‘T6’ the INEOS Britannia LEQ12 prototype testing platform. In a wide-ranging interview with the Recon Team, Ben gives his views on what he describes as this ‘critical period’ in the America’s Cup cycle and highlights some of the interesting foil and technical developments as teams zero-in on their design thinking for the one-build AC75s that will shortly go into production worldwide in the coming few weeks. Ben also offers his unique perspective on the British challenge, very much reiterating the point that this period is one for test and analysis as was shown on the water today as he and Giles Scott pushed the new foil through a myriad of trim and pitch settings, pushing to the outer limits to extract the maximum data. Ben also offers his views on the upcoming preliminary regatta in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and the huge opportunity that presents for the America’s Cup as an event. A must-see video after another solid, ‘workmanlike’ day on the Bay of Palma with the British team looking increasingly comfortable with their programme and delivering results for the design team and engineers of Mercedes Applied Science. It was October-like conditions in Barcelona on Thursday with a southeast ‘Xaoloc’ wind and an easterly swell sitting offset to each other producing challenging conditions for a commissioning day of Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s novel Tubercle port foil. The Swiss more than manned-up to the conditions, sending the AC40 (now firmly in LEQ12 mode) over some 50 nautical miles through five hours of solid testing with the sailors looking masterful as they pushed through the design office’s check list. Speaking afterwards, the ever-present on-water design co-ordinator, Adolfo Carrau, summed up the day saying: “Today was a bit of a commissioning with it, was a bit of a fast commissioning, but we did first check that structurally and the mechanics of the foil were working as intended and then we had a long day just going through the settings - different boat speeds and cants and pitch – so, typical settings that you try on the foils just to see how it (the new port foil) behaves and comparing against the other foil (starboard one-design) which we know already much better. So, I think as a first day it was pretty successful.” Section 41.
