After what has been such a positive period for INEOS Britannia, the sailors rounded out the week with just T6 on the water today and their only opposition being Mother Nature at her angriest. Thunder cells forming inland with lightning strikes in the distance meant the British could only grab a two-hour weather window but managed to tick off a load of testing before Xabi Fernandez, the Head Coach, threw some marks in and let the sailors go racing, albeit shadow boxing racing. Speaking afterwards, Iain Jensen gave a great insight into the team speaking about the differences between this campaign and the last: “I guess the team feels much bigger this time and to me it feels like we're in a much better spot. Mercedes are reasonably new to the to America's Cup but that they're learning things quickly and I think moving forward we're going to be really well placed.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. A simply terrific day for INEOS Britannia on Wednesday as the British team, at full strength with Sir Ben Ainslie in town, lined up T6, their LEQ12 prototype, with the team’s AC40 in the first encounter we’ve seen of these similar but oh so very different boats. Speed differences are perhaps better judged by the Mercedes Applied Science team back in Brackley, Northamptonshire, but as a spectator it was hard to take your eye off the low-riding T6, bristling with power and electric downwind on its anhedral starboard foil. Very much looking the real deal, the British are more than on to something with the development of T6, the bustle-skimming, end-plating technique that at first looked odd, now is the firm direction of every team in this America’s Cup cycle and their control on the sails is looking masterful. The Flight Controllers are now so comfortable with the array of technology onboard that they are willing and able to throw the boat about with ease. In the pre-starts they looked very controlled against the presumably lighter and, you would expect, nimbler AC40 but in reality T6 looked more than a match. Considering the light conditions, it was a devastating performance – imagine anything above 10 knots. Ben Ainslie gives a superb interview to Justin Chisholm of the recon unit after sailing, running through the day where he made the point that there were ‘no surprises…which was good’ and also hinted at the development pathway that is about to kick off in the coming weeks and months with T6. That will prick the ears and senses of the other America’s Cup teams – the British are on a charge now to Barcelona and look better and better with every day on the water. Section 41. With the new M1 mainsail complemented by the equally loft-fresh J1, there was plenty of light-build carbon fibre strands up aloft to give the horsepower and Arnaud Psarofaghis and Maxime Bachelin put on a demonstration of windward heel foiling at height whilst Bryan Mettraux and Lucien Cujean, two cool heads in the cockpit, kept the LEQ12 in flight across a variety of pitch and mode settings to test out the Tubercle foil and extract that vital A/B data that the designer demand. Nils Frei came to the interview to sum up the day where he saw “valuable lessons” being taken and then spoke about the work the Swiss are putting into the simulator programme which he describes as “getting closer and closer to reality” and how they are using the programme in a 360 process to improve all over. Nils also alludes to the coming two-boat testing programme with the LEQ12 and the teams new AC40-7 which is commissioned and ready to hit the water. When a sailor of the stature of Ray ‘Razor’ Davies calls a day ‘Truly Awesome,’ it’s certainly time to sit up and pay attention. With two AC40s now delivered, commissioned and operational, the coming days could well see the first stint of two-boat race training for Alinghi Red Bull Racing in this America’s Cup cycle. Before then, however, AC40-4, the team’s first AC40 that has been converted to LEQ12 status and sports the Tubercle foil that Dan Bernasconi, Chief Designer of Emirates Team New Zealand, described as being “very interesting” was today out in Barcelona, for a first test run with the new M1-1 LE mainsail replete with the equally box-fresh J1-1 LE jib – the biggest in the range. Speaking afterwards, Lucien Cujean spoke to the recon team about the new sails and compared the one-design to the LEQ12 sail, saying: “The one design sail, it’s made for everyone so basically it's a bit heavier and in terms of structure is a bit more compact so our design team try some other stuff on the AC40 sail and it's for us a very good platform to try things, to try a bit different shape a bit different orientation with the fibre, and then reproduce it for the for the big boat.” Section 41. With much anticipation building for the continuation of the two-boat testing schedule down in Auckland, ultimately it was a disappointing Saturday morning for Emirates Team New Zealand with an unspecified control issue on the one-design starboard foil on the LEQ12 forcing the team to bring the boat back to dock just before 1pm. Blair Tuke, widely considered as one of the greatest flight controllers in the America’s Cup, broke the session down and saw plenty of positives from his perspective with continued data gathering on the long-span anhedral port foil before calling it a day. Speaking afterwards, Blair said: “Good learnings on that new foil today hands so that was you know for me the most important part so that was good and yeah obviously now it’s been a big push for the team, there’s a lot going on around here with the big boat heading away and two boats sailing, so go debrief now and then have a well-deserved rest tomorrow (Sunday).” Emirates Team New Zealand will continue the two-boat AC40 training next week – and we’ll be keeping the tally. Over twenty years ago, on Sunday 20th October 2002, the Amerigo Vespucci, regarded as one of the most beautiful sailing craft of all time, sailed into Auckland Harbour for the 2003 America’s Cup and was memorably greeted in the Hauraki Gulf by the Luna Rossa IACC boat with Francesco de Angelis steering. The images from that day became iconic Italian representations and record of the old and the new in the sailing world. Max Sirena, Team Principal of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli was onboard the Tall Ship and described the feeling saying: “It was different to see Luna Rossa, the LEQ12 prototype, from the deck of the Amerigo Vespucci and when it was going by the bow or the stern of the boat it was quite emotional to see the faces of the people or the young guys onboard the Amerigo Vespucci - so it was quite a unique moment which doesn't happen often in life. I mean at the moment I think the Amerigo Vespucci is worldwide known as one of the most beautiful sailing school (boats) of the Italian Navy. Luna Rossa is becoming more and more popular and thanks to you guys (the recon team) as well and so I think seeing let's say two famous Italian flagships in the same space of water in front of the City of Cagliari was beautiful.” Section 41. The days are long out in Palma for INEOS Britannia at the moment as the team pushes on with a relentless commitment to progression and improvement in all areas of the boat and sailing technique. Everything is captured, and on a day where it was very much dictated by specific design tests, ‘T6’ was pushed into uncomfortable pitches and ride heights early in the session as the team seeks the ‘corner cases’ to thoroughly test out the new starboard anhedral foil. Once the testing schedule was completed after several long foiling runs, the Chase Boat team dropped in marks and the sailors put on what can only be described as demonstration sailing. T6 was alive and being absolutely sent by Giles Scott and Ben Cornish, hitting warp speeds but very much under control. Leigh McMillan and Luke Parkinson were doing a stellar job on trim and flight control with T6 held desperately low to the water upwind to create the end-plating effect and flying high as they dared downwind. Tacks and gybes were some of the smoothest we’ve seen from INEOS Britannia and all round it was a day full of positives. Speaking afterwards, Ben Cornish described his almost unique dual role of helmsman and cyclor whilst also offering an insight into the continual progression that the team are seeking with the heavily upgraded T6 that has rapidly become a powerful tool for the British and certainly one of the stand-out LEQ12s in this America’s Cup cycle. The inclement and unseasonal conditions that have dogged Barcelona all week continued on Friday as Alinghi Red Bull Racing took the ‘big bull’ their AC75, out early for a morning of testing and photo shoots with a helicopter overhead in a ‘Gregal Llevant’ breeze from the northeast that barely touched 10 knots. With grey skies as a backdrop, the AC75 juxtaposed the gloom and Arnaud Psarofaghis and Maxime Bachelin put in a solid performance, particularly early on, in the more consistent breeze. Noticeable was the demand to fly lower upwind with BoatZero looking more than comfortable in the bow-down pitch that the team prefer with a little bit of windward heel. Onboard the AC75 on Friday was Yves Courvoisier, one of the Swiss team’s research and development engineers with a particular focus on development of the simulator tool that Alinghi Red Bull Racing have put a lot of work into over the past year. Correlating the simulations with on-water polars and targets is what all teams in this America’s Cup cycle are working towards and Yves offers an insight into the laser-like focus that the Swiss are deploying and concentrating on key components as well as integrating machine-learning and AI into the tool. It’s a rare glimpse inside an area that, by its very nature, is the team’s most valuable piece of intellectual property with many believing that the America’s Cup is already won in the super-computers that are running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Fascinating insight and a look to the future of where the world of design and technology in the America’s Cup is heading. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away.
