The final sailing session of what has been an invaluable training camp in Palma, concluded on Thursday for INEOS Britannia in picture-perfect early afternoon conditions that allowed the sailors to rifle through a whole load of starboard foil tests whilst giving the sailors some carte blanche to perfect their windward heel technique both upwind and downwind. T6, the INEOS Britannia LEQ12 looked absolutely alive with Dylan Fletcher-Scott and Ben Cornish driving her hard aided by Bleddyn Mon and Leigh McMillan performing wonders on trim and flight control. Big steps have been taken forward in mainsail control and the lovely tweak to windward just before they tack is fast and effective. The flow-vis paint was back again with the Boat Captain climbing out onto the raised orange starboard foil arm and applying liberal quantities of mid-blue paint before the team go into full bow-up mode to stall the foils and both measure and photograph the flow detachment results over the top of the foil. Interesting test. The full report is below from famed yachting journalist Justin Chisholm, who also interviewed Leigh McMillan who gave a terrific run down of the day and bade Palma a fond farewell whilst looking forward to Barcelona. The INEOS Britannia base is very near completion now in Barcelona and has been a hive of activity this week ready for the team’s arrival in short order with a first scheduled sailing day on 1st August. The British America’s Cup challenge is at full tilt now. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

This is a brand to pay attention to guys. The Quarken 28 Cabin looks like a boat that will appeal to the family boaters that want something fuel efficient, offshore capable, all-weather friendly and also an overnighter! I was so impressed with the quality on the 27 t-top we tested earlier this year and this cabin version did not disappoint either. I had many questions about the offset cabin arrangement and if it actually works from a functional point of view so join me and let me know your thoughts in the comments. Finnish designed and built this little rocket is a sensible choice for the conservative boater in my opinion. The inherent value of sailing an AC75, albeit one from the 36th America’s Cup and designed for very different conditions, was proven on Wednesday as Alinghi Red Bull Racing posted noticeable boat handling progress in conditions that peaked at around 15 knots in the afternoon but sat at a median of 10-12 knots and flat water. The Swiss brought onboard the AC75, yet again, Julien Pilate and Yves Courvoisier who both have significant input on the simulator programme for Alinghi Red Bull Racing and it’s very clear that the team have put a lot of store in getting the simulator as accurately correlated as possible. Time on the water for Pilate and Courvoisier takes them into the real-world to feel the boat as Arthur Cevey, one of the key cyclors for the Swiss confirmed afterwards: “The goal is to have a simulator that is as close as the reality as possible so having the guys working onboard is super-important to get the reality feeling of the boat and try to transfer it as best as possible onto the machine.” Section 41. A busy Tuesday for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in Cagliari as they continue to find the optimal set-up both upwind and downwind for their new foil port foil configuration whilst also assessing the new flow fence that the team have applied to the upper part of the outer wing at the midsection of the starboard foil. For sure, and highly noticeable, the asymmetric set-up of the foils is producing different flying styles side-to-side with the Flight Controllers seemingly able to bring the LEQ12 closer to the surface both upwind and downwind when flying on the new, slender port foil to provide the much-desired end-plating effect that is very much ‘a la mode’ in 2023. Similar to other teams running LEQ12 programmes either with adapted AC40s or via new-build LEQ12s, Luna Rossa are running wide cant angles in the flatter water to sink the hull down close to the surface when foiling and allowing the outboard wingtip to break the surface. On a day that combined straight-line cant sweeps and minor pitch adjustments with full-on racecourse training, the Italians came ashore surprised at the velocity of the mid-afternoon sea-breeze that hit 16 knots in the gusts but pleased with the data gained. Umberto Molineris, the ever-present Flight Controller & Trimmer for the team came to the interview full of his usual enthusiasm and gave a terrific interview covering the day and talking through just what is being demanded in his role as the programme moves forward: “I think, all the teams are looking for a nice sealing on the water - the goal is not to touch it but for sure to be much closer if possible.” That’s the Flight Controller’s mantra of the 37th America’s Cup. With the INEOS Britannia base in Barcelona looking almost complete amidst a hub of final activity, there’s an end of term feel to the team’s time in Palma de Mallorca that has proven to be a fabulous winter-training base. The programme with ‘T6’ their tricksy-looking LEQ12 continued today (Tuesday) with the team really digging into the foil data – painting on mid-blue flow-vis paint, riding bow-up to push the foil to stall, taking photos and then repeating. In the sail department they rifled through two J2 jibs and settled on sailing the J3 in down-range conditions – those cross-overs are being properly analysed – as Ben Cornish and Dylan Fletcher-Scott ticked off a long list of testing for the designers. Speaking afterwards, Dylan Fletcher-Scott gave a broad-ranging interview talking about the intense and long testing day today (they didn’t dock in until 6pm), how he’s settling into the team, his role, and the outlook for starting sailing in Barcelona soon. The excitement is building ahead of the team de-camping to the Cup venue and Dylan summed it up well saying at the end: “I think all the teams have got their strengths and ultimately we've only seen Alinghi (Red Bull Racing) in Barcelona so let's see when we all get there and see who's looking top dog.” Section 41. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli continued their promising training block out in Cagliari with a flat-water day that their LEQ12 absolutely revels in. It was a day for the Flight Controllers to really run through the modes as they slowly get to grips with the V3 foil hanging off the port foil arm whilst completing A/B testing against the V1 foil on starboard that has been on since the start of the campaign albeit on different sides. Marco Gradoni is fast becoming the darling of Italian sailing and the team’s faith in him is paying handsome dividends. Could he be a helm on the AC75? That’s the question in Cup circles and day after day he does his case no harm at all with highly consistent performances that are becoming hard to ignore. If not the AC75, then for sure in this cycle, he will be a force in the AC40s and with so much time in the boat, he could be unstoppable. In interview afterwards he is the model professional with a million watt smile and he summed up the day beautifully saying: “It was pretty light and flat with some Mistral, the last days we had the lot of waves so it was a big difference from the other days, it was nice because it was super flat, quite light, and there were good manoeuvres, good day, so it's nice.” Section 41. Emirates Team New Zealand may well be back to a one-boat programme for now but on a big breeze day in Auckland, the last of their sailing block, the Defenders of the America’s Cup showed real class and commitment as they pushed the new starboard foil to its very limit. Pete Burling and Nathan Outteridge were at their very best, sailing with astonishing accuracy in a shifting breeze whilst Blair Tuke and Andy Maloney were on another level with sail trim and Flight Control. Speaking afterwards, Blair Tuke, Emirates Team New Zealand’s Flight Controller gave a good summary of the day saying: “Quite a windy day here…when we got out it was only about 15 knots but pretty quickly the cell came through so we ended up on the front side of it running down past Maraetai and sort of the far end of Waiheke and then when we saw we had a runway back, we went back upwind when it got pretty windy over 25 knots there for a little bit but yeah we had a few more objectives to tick off on the foil but…just the one boat today so it brings to a close our block now and yeah so it's been good really, really, good learnings.” Section 41. Always one of the best value commentators, Nathan Outteridge stepped ashore at the Emirates Team New Zealand Wynyard Base after yet another upped-ante day in Auckland of pressured race practice in the team’s AC40 LEQ12 with the one-design AC40 and gave the recon team a wide-ranging interview covering the day, what they’re looking to achieve, how the foil testing is going and a glimpse of the team’s immediate future. To the naked eye, and from on/off-water recon shots, the new long-span starboard foil looks to be asymmetric with the outboard end curving gently upwards and the inboard end having slight anhedral bend. At the tips, and when viewed from on the water, the outboard end curves forward, whilst the inboard foil curves ever-so-slightly aft. The tips are both squared off and the join around the bulb area is incredibly well detailed and hydrodynamic. The recon team could certainly notice reduced leeway that ultimately produced great upwind height. Nathan gives his view, from his privileged perspective in the video. A must-watch – Nathan is one of the great communicators of the current America’s Cup. How far can you take a dinghy..... on ONE 5gal tank of gas? What sort of sea states and ocean conditions can it survive with it's occupant intact and comfortable? What does the ENTIRE island of Saint Martin look like? Well, I was determined to find out with my brand new Highfield 310! The Highfield 310 is a 10'2" hypalon RIB dinghy I hoist behind my 38' sailboat "Adventureborne" while sailing the high seas. It needs to be light enough to hoist, but strong enough to survive the open ocean on extreme adventures like this. So I decided to put it to the test! All forty two nautical miles worth of test! Because of this, I got to see and explore more than I ever thought this island had to offer. Showing me just how far a simple dinghy can go if you're able and willing to go on an epic adventure. The island of Saint Martin is 23,680 acres, or 34 sq mi large. I was honestly surprised with everything that took place..... you'll see for yourself! ;) . . . One of the questions that comes up time and again around the 37th America’s Cup is: where will the innovation come and what will it be? In Cup after Cup, we see new takes on long-standing theories that modern construction, materials and understanding allow the teams to investigate and it’s becoming a pretty safe bet that INEOS Britannia, the team with technology coursing through their DNA, is going to be at the forefront in this cycle. Today out in Palma, almost routinely, the team revealed a bunch of new technology dockside including what looks like digital measurement patches at the first set of spreaders, a Pitot tube on the rather beautiful new starboard foil, a new wired in plastic box low down at the gooseneck and a fairing at the mast base which is an area of high concentration for the overall flow-dampening that the team are aiming for. It’s a bunch of new tech as we would expect from a team backed by the engineering might of Mercedes Applied Science and it’s coming onstream at a canter now as the clock ticks down to the America’s Cup Challenger Selection Series in September 2024. Below is the full recon report from Justin Chisholm but really worth a look is the interview with ‘Supercoach’ Rob Wilson who explains the day and gives an insight into what the team are working on with the new tech that also included on-water applications of what looked like flow paint to the foils. This is a team high on measurement, testing and innovation – it’s a tantalising mix for the Challenger of Record. Section 41. On December 12th, 1978, the German cargo ship MS München disappeared while sailing through a storm on the North Atlantic. A series of radio messages and a small handful of clues suggest that the modern cargo ship probably sank after colliding with a massive rogue wave. They may have been off the recon radar for a week doing pure AC40 training for the Youth & Women’s teams, but it has been all action down in Cagliari with the LEQ12 undergoing some significant upgrades - most notably some changes to the starboard wing and uprated control panels in the cockpits. Coming back out onto the pure summer waters of Sardinia with the nailed-on sea breezes, the team barely looked like they had missed a beat and were keen to get into data gathering through their usual high-pressure bear-aways and rapid turn-up manoeuvres that they favour, before throwing in some marks and getting time-on-distance practice and short-course race coverage. Speaking after what was a relatively short, late afternoon session due to some technical issues in harbour delaying dock-out, Michele Cannoni, the Boat Captain, gave a wide-ranging interview summing up the day, speaking about the AC40 training last week and talking through the dockside issues before a fascinating interpolation of the new wing when pressed as to whether it was a ‘copy’ of other teams’ long-span anhedral foils: “maybe all the teams are getting to something similar let's say…” Solid afternoon for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the LEQ12. Section 41.
