Sir Ben Ainslie’s old coach in the British Youth Squad used to have several expressions, some rather colourful, for days like the INEOS Britannia team experienced today in Palma – from flat calm to full on, it was a tricky one on the water with a building sea-state and a puffy airflow that offered no consistency. ‘T6’ was again the weapon of choice, wearing some natty new sails in the form of the heavier-weather M2-2P with its narrow top and the first break out of the new J2-2 which the team will be desperate to find the cross-over points between the J1-1 and the trusty J3-2 that is very much the go-to in these smaller foilers. Ben Cornish who was onboard today as the fifth man or ‘joyrider’ as he monikered himself, summed it up beautifully saying: “From what we've seen in Barcelona, it's probably not a million miles away from what we can be expecting so in terms of that for what the design team get and the feedback that we're sending back from a day like that, it's worth every moment you can possibly get in…it's difficult sailing these boats in those conditions and we're kind of blessed here that we probably see more easier days than days like that, so we certainly were making the most of it.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

Another sensational sailing session for Alinghi Red Bull Racing in absolute perfect Barcelona conditions with a rising breeze and a challenging swell that kept the sailors honest and on it all afternoon on Tuesday. Race practice was tight with Maxime Bachelin joining Sailing Team Advisor Dean Barker on the LEQ12 whilst Arnaud Psarofaghis and Nicolas Charbonnier continued their commissioning work on the AC40 in one design mode to get maximum practice ahead of the first Preliminary Regatta in Vilanova i La Geltrú in September. A mix of pre-start practice, short course racing and long data gatherings runs were completed at a frenetic pace and whilst the racing was full-on, the big gain was in the testing procedures with both boats swapping sides effortlessly and lining-up for valuable learnings and plenty of data flowing off the telemetry. It was an impressive, high-octane sight out on the Barcelona racetrack and speaking afterwards Julien Pilate, one of Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s sail designers who gave a very interesting interview talking through the two-boat testing schedule and broke down the process and how it’s easy to come to wrong decisions: “It all comes back to the planning and how we define the metrics. We have to be quite clever at defining the goals of the day, and it's not an easy job, there are so many variables and it's easy to draw the wrong conclusion. So, it's an iterative process you test, then you analyse, you learn, you might want to redo it to make sure it is working well, or you just move on in the learning slope.” This is a team high on that ‘learning slope’ now and looking impressive day after day out on the water with a real dedication to getting vital time on the water. More to come this week for the team that is relentless in their training schedule. Section 41. It is some of the best footage we’ve seen so far in this America’s Cup cycle, with Emirates Team New Zealand implementing a high intensity pre-start practice routine that had watchers on the edge of their seat as the AC40 and AC40 LEQ12 went head to head on lead-ins to the start line. Over and over they practiced it, with the two boats judging time-on-distance and doing their upmost to shut the other out in coffin corner at the leeward end of the start line. Speaking afterwards, Tony Rae, a living legend of Emirates Team New Zealand as a member of the Black Magic crew in 1995 and a seven (or is it 8?) time campaigner, gave his racing assessment of the training schedule today saying: “The thing today was obviously taking turns at leading in or trailing in and just the manoeuvres before the start and dialling down and trying to lock each other out that sort thing. So the manoeuvrability of the boats in that much breeze and obviously the timing, because we know that going back to the line it can change very quickly from being early, to quite late, so yeah there's just a lot going on and you can never do too much of that sort of starting so I think today was good obviously for both boats to be able to just keep doing that over and over instead of worrying about the rest of the race.” Section 41. Sir Ben Ainslie and Giles Scott, a helming duo with a rightful weight of expectancy on their shoulders, came out swinging on a perfect day on the Bay of Palma and put the hammer down for a session that saw them at near race-pace and looking very much the real deal. After sailing, and having captured almost the perfect tack head on, the recon team quizzed Leigh McMillan as to what that perfect tack entailed. Long answer but very good: “You’ve got a lot of people involved in a tack and it's just everyone all working nicely together, the timing and everyone's in tune with that timing, and then swopping roles from one task to the other end and getting all of that timing right - getting the ride height, the heel and the pitch all nicely set up and all the trim adjustments you have to make, to exit the tack. So, it's a lot of choreography going on but I feel like we we’re getting pretty solid generally and trying to put the pressure on that in the pre-starts and put the pressure on a small racecourse and making sure that we're getting more finely tuned…you're looking at speed lost through the tacks that’s always a good one if you're not looking at the pure dynamics of the boat, just looking at your total speed loss from VMG to VMG through the manoeuvres.” Section 41. 22 Year old Gold Coaster Xavier Doerr’s 21 foot racing yacht has encountered a severe weather system off the West Australian coastline, with the lone yachtsman slammed by huge seas and winds gusting to 80 knots. The vessel has been knocked on its side on multiple occasions, suffering significant damage. In constant contact with his shore team, Xavier has taken a sharp left towards the coastline and will make his way to Fremantle Sailing Club where there will be an assessment of the boat to ascertain the repairs needed in order to safely continue.

It happened and it was spectacular. Alinghi Red Bull Racing were back on the water on Monday in Barcelona, this time with both AC40-7 and AC40-4 (in LEQ12 mode), lining up and then going head-to-head for some fascinating race practice. Ernesto Bertarelli and Dean Barker linked up on the LEQ12 that now sports its Tubercle delta wing on the starboard foil arm, switching it over from port with the Tubercles now featuring on the inside of the foil profile. It’s an interesting switch and with Jason Waterhouse onboard in one of the trimming positions, this interesting test team proved to be pretty handy with honours even over two races against Arnaud Psarofaghis and Nicolas Charbonnier sailing the one-design AC40. Yves Detrey, completing the team onboard the LEQ12 summed it up beautifully afterwards when asked how important this milestone day was for the Swiss team: “Yeah very important. It’s the first time that we are here racing with two boats, and I think it's a big milestone in any of the campaigns of any of the teams and we're the first today to do it (in Barcelona) and I think it was very interesting, you know it's active competition, so it's what we like as well.” Section 41. Catching, cleaning and cooking two lobsters after spearfishing in my UNDERWEAR! Ended up having an absolutely delicious dinner onboard my sailboat Adventureborne with my crew member Jazz. We were about to embark on a stormy overnight sail from Acklins Island to Myaguana. But first we needed dinner! I didn't want to go far, or get all my gear out. So I just went out with what I had on. Only my underwear! The spearfishing itself went super smoothly. Even with numerous sharks trying to steal my catch. It's what I didn't expect that happened later that night that really caught me by surprise. And made for a terrible night! *This video was filmed several months ago during lobster season.* . . .

It’s often said that the Great Lakes of North America resemble inland seas. They are the largest group of lakes in the world by area and they contain 21% of the earth’s surface fresh water. They provide a vital link between rich natural resources and centers of industry, making them a key driver of economic growth in both the United States and Canada. Their size, economic importance, and terrifying unpredictability have also made them some of the deadliest waterways in the world. From giant, state-of-the-art freighters, to modest cargo ships said to haunt the lakes to this day, here are the stories of 5 ships that vanished on the Great Lakes. After what has been such a positive period for INEOS Britannia, the sailors rounded out the week with just T6 on the water today and their only opposition being Mother Nature at her angriest. Thunder cells forming inland with lightning strikes in the distance meant the British could only grab a two-hour weather window but managed to tick off a load of testing before Xabi Fernandez, the Head Coach, threw some marks in and let the sailors go racing, albeit shadow boxing racing. Speaking afterwards, Iain Jensen gave a great insight into the team speaking about the differences between this campaign and the last: “I guess the team feels much bigger this time and to me it feels like we're in a much better spot. Mercedes are reasonably new to the to America's Cup but that they're learning things quickly and I think moving forward we're going to be really well placed.” Section 41.

Think owning a new powerboat is outside your budget? Think again! BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow hits up the 2023 Bay Bridge Boat Show in Stevensville, Maryland, to show you that finding a new powerboat that's around the average price of a new car is not only possible, but you have a lot of great choices! You can find a bunch of affordable new boats from bay boats to watersports boats. But just because it's "cheap" doesn't necessarily mean low quality. Lenny shows you an easy way to tell if that budget boat is built to the highest U.S. safety standards by looking for an NMMA sticker. WAIT! A simply terrific day for INEOS Britannia on Wednesday as the British team, at full strength with Sir Ben Ainslie in town, lined up T6, their LEQ12 prototype, with the team’s AC40 in the first encounter we’ve seen of these similar but oh so very different boats. Speed differences are perhaps better judged by the Mercedes Applied Science team back in Brackley, Northamptonshire, but as a spectator it was hard to take your eye off the low-riding T6, bristling with power and electric downwind on its anhedral starboard foil. Very much looking the real deal, the British are more than on to something with the development of T6, the bustle-skimming, end-plating technique that at first looked odd, now is the firm direction of every team in this America’s Cup cycle and their control on the sails is looking masterful. The Flight Controllers are now so comfortable with the array of technology onboard that they are willing and able to throw the boat about with ease. In the pre-starts they looked very controlled against the presumably lighter and, you would expect, nimbler AC40 but in reality T6 looked more than a match. Considering the light conditions, it was a devastating performance – imagine anything above 10 knots. Ben Ainslie gives a superb interview to Justin Chisholm of the recon unit after sailing, running through the day where he made the point that there were ‘no surprises…which was good’ and also hinted at the development pathway that is about to kick off in the coming weeks and months with T6. That will prick the ears and senses of the other America’s Cup teams – the British are on a charge now to Barcelona and look better and better with every day on the water. Section 41.

Mastering the tricky light stuff in Barcelona is very much the calling card of Alinghi Red Bull Racing and in a fading, dying breeze, they grabbed a weather window on Wednesday and took full advantage putting in a vital testing day on the AC40-4 LEQ12. With the new M1 mainsail complemented by the equally loft-fresh J1, there was plenty of light-build carbon fibre strands up aloft to give the horsepower and Arnaud Psarofaghis and Maxime Bachelin put on a demonstration of windward heel foiling at height whilst Bryan Mettraux and Lucien Cujean, two cool heads in the cockpit, kept the LEQ12 in flight across a variety of pitch and mode settings to test out the Tubercle foil and extract that vital A/B data that the designer demand. Nils Frei came to the interview to sum up the day where he saw “valuable lessons” being taken and then spoke about the work the Swiss are putting into the simulator programme which he describes as “getting closer and closer to reality” and how they are using the programme in a 360 process to improve all over. Nils also alludes to the coming two-boat testing programme with the LEQ12 and the teams new AC40-7 which is commissioned and ready to hit the water. Fascinating days for Alinghi Red Bull Racing who are about to be joined in Barcelona in July by the rest of the America’s Cup fleet – a prospect they are no doubt, relishing. Section 41. When a sailor of the stature of Ray ‘Razor’ Davies calls a day ‘Truly Awesome,’ it’s certainly time to sit up and pay attention. A sailor’s sailor, not driven to hyperbole, what Davies was describing was the simply epic sight of two AC40s, at pace, in breeze, going head-to-head. If there’s a better sight in sailing, it would perhaps be two AC75s doing the same, but whilst we wait for the latest masterpieces to trip off the design-board and into build, for now the AC40s will more than do.
