Ruggero Tita, the Italian Olympic Nacra 17 Gold medallist was back in Cagliari from his recent training camp in the Olympic venue of Marseille and was impressed with the crew co-ordination onboard the LEQ12 on what he described as a “spectacular” day. Flat water yielded to a slight chop in the afternoon and after some fast tow-testing in the early part of the session, the sailors settled into some highly impressive pre-start practice at pace. The double board down, tack and bear-away move is something to look out for in the America’s Cup and certainly the Preliminary Regattas and Jimmy Spithill and Ruggero were on it all afternoon. Vittorio Bissaro came into the Flight Control position today alongside Andrea Tesei and the Italians are truly blessed with world class athletes in this crucial position. Marco Gradoni and Margherita Porro had the honour of the observation seats and will, for sure, have picked up a heap of tips from a sailing team operating at the very highest level. Ruggero came to the recon interview with his usual enthusiasm and gave an in-depth interview covering everything from the days’ sailing to changes on the boat (minor), to crew co-ordination improvements (major) to work being conducted in the team’s simulator. Always worth listening to, in Ruggero, the future of Italian sailing at the apex of the sport is assured. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024
It may well have been a light weather session today for Alinghi Red Bull Racing with the breeze never really puffing up above 10 knots but it was arguably their most impressive training day in the AC75 as they showcased the awesome power of BoatZero in the light and showed the big improvements in terms of technique that the team continue to make. With respected naval architect Arthur Rozand onboard for his fourth time now, advising on light weather manoeuvres, the Swiss looked remarkably composed and their new highly noticeable stern-down technique as they approach the tack before going through the wind sees the bow stay up and the boat flying. Downwind through the gybes there’s still a tendency especially when the starboard foil is lowered for the bow to immediately dip but there was some impressive flight control going on onboard BoatZero today (Monday) that more often than not, kept the boat airborne and the bow clear. Indeed an 86% foil-to-foil record on the gybes was stratospheric. Upwind in flight, and particularly in a straight line, Alinghi Red Bull Racing were majestic, inducing a smidge of windward heel, low flight and perfect pitch to harness everything that the Barcelona Garbi breeze could muster. Matteo Plazzi, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Rules Adviser was in Cagliari today and came to the interview station after sailing to give a broad ranging interview covering the recon programme and who the teams are that the Italians fear most. Matteo pointed at the Kiwis saying: “Well for sure all the teams are equally important, but probably there is somebody that is more equal than somebody else and for sure the reference is always (Emirates) Team New Zealand they won the last Cup and they started sailing very early, they're doing a lot of things early, so is good to keep a good eye on them but for sure nobody, including the French and all the teams, need the equal respect.” Section 41. Europe can actually be fantastic for Digital Nomads - but is perhaps overlooked a little, in favour of even more affordable and exotic countries. Jimmy Spithill reflects on another perfect Mistral day in Cagliari, "The beauty of today is when you get those flat conditions, you get some pretty good testing numbers - it's pretty static performance. You can really lock the boat in, and just test the numbers. "I think that's a good day for us to go back and look at the numbers - but again, I doubt we'll be racing in those sort of conditions." Katja and Fabio are living the dream once again. After having built their own monohull 20 years ago and doing a large Atlantic circle with their kids. They have now chosen to get this amazing Schionning Arrow 1500 built for them. Even though it was built in a shipyard there were still hundreds of hours spend working on the boat to get it ready for cruising fulltime. This is an alternative to buying a bigger adventure boat. Made in Finland, outboard powered and sleeping for FOUR people in TWO cabins on a boat thats under 30ft and totally rips with a couple 225HP Mercs one a super sweet hull that will allow you to still run fast offshore in moderate conditions. The Flipper 900ST seems like it's been hiding out of sight to me but now that i've spent a day onboard i'm embarrased for not paying more attention to it. This is a high quality boat that deserves the attention because she packs a lot into a little boat and is built to withstand the Aussie climate and looks like a boat that will look after you for a long time. Flipper is under the umbrella of the Nimbus Group from Sweden but this boat is built in Finland. I understand this company has been around for decades and they have a race boat heritage which makes sense considering she'll hit close to 40kts with the smallest motors so should easily be a 50kt weapon with the twin 300hp! Have a watch and tell me if you agree with my thought process on this boat? The biggest enemy for all America’s Cup teams is time. It’s the one commodity that they just can’t buy and although there is no second in this great game, every second counts. So it was no surprise on Thursday to see Alinghi Red Bull Racing making the absolute most of their territorial advantage and laser-like focus with their AC40-7 and AC40-4 in LEQ12 mode putting in just over five hours of break-neck practice, flying around in decent breeze up to 20 knots and a swell left over from the remnants of a storm earlier in the week. Lucien Cujean came to the recon interview dockside and as always delivered a fantastic assessment of what was a hugely valuable day. He spoke about the Delta Foil and the influence of having sailors of the calibre of Phil Robertson and Jason Waterhouse working with the team in their advisory capacities. Well worth listening to Lucien who is one of the true coming stars of the America’s Cup in Barcelona and beyond. Section 41. Getting ourselves accustomed to life aboard with our young daughter has been quite the adventure We’ve already had to Escape a beautiful but technically difficult anchorage, we’ve discovered that Isa is a natural sailor, and went on an epic off-grid style grocery run. And now as we enjoy the tranquility of what is probably my favorite anchorage of all time our goal is to explore some nearby ancient ruins, as well as to get Isabella comfortable with swimming in the ocean. Assuming we don’t all get attacked by sea creatures. The summer is well and truly in down in the Mediterranean climes, and beneath sunny skies with the temperature at 26 degrees, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli had a testing Cagliari day where the Gulf just wouldn’t yield consistent breeze but delivered a Barcelona-type chop that really tested the Flight Controllers. Speaking afterwards, Andrea Tesei alluded to the fine lines that the team were dancing on this busy and testing day: “We tried to get the conditions we think we're getting in Barcelona, with sea state and very light breeze, so the focus was handling and learning the boat and seeing how she behaved in this hard condition. You obviously need to be very precise in the handling and keep a really nice equilibrium to glide for the waves and not stall the foils and drop into the water… the forecast in the beginning should've been actually not too light a day. We planned for an early dock-out to get the lighter part and set into the sea state that was left over from yesterday but in the end the stronger breeze never filled in…so we just sailed where we saw the best pressure on the Gulf.” Section 41.
Flying into Barcelona this afternoon, the unmistakable sight of no less than three AC40s training on the glistening Barcelona waters was quite simply breath-taking. Alinghi Red Bull Racing had two boats out training whilst for the New York Yacht Club American Magic Team it was a milestone day. Chrissy Lamond, wife of Tyson Lamond Chief Operating Officer of NYYC American Magic had the honour of breaking the customary champagne bottle as she successfully christened the eighth AC40 in the fleet and called her, quite simply, ‘Magic.’ Tom Burnham, the enigmatic Team Coach for NYYC American Magic, spoke for the whole team when he commented: “It's great to be here in Barcelona, and it was really nice to get out on the water with our AC40 Boat2 ‘Magic’…and it was really great good day today…There was a decent sea state, it was really big yesterday, and it was definitely still pretty big today and it was different, it's definitely a new challenge and something that we're all going to have to get used to, so it's definitely worth being here to check it out.” Section 41. My old old old mainsail finally tore during an upwind sail when I hit a squall. It was one heck of an experience, and not something you'd normally want to have happen. But, I have a new mainsail on the way soon, and was not worried. So what now?!? Who do I do with this entire old & used mainsail? Well, I've got a few ideas...... :) . . . The core Emirates Team New Zealand sailors stepped off a plane at Auckland International airport and almost straight onto the AC40 LEQ12 for what Nathan Outteridge described as: “the best way to get over jet lag is to stick the boys on a plane and get back into it.” It was a short session but highly valuable in perfect New Zealand early winter conditions with a 7-9 knot breeze and flat water ahead of a front moving into Auckland promising stronger for later in the week, that called for the dry-suits more for warmth than cover. What the design office were more than keen to test today was a switching of the new long span, gently arcing asymmetric starboard foil that the team were trialling up to the 12th June, over to the starboard side with the addition of a winglet on the outboard foil to stop ‘what the team calls tip loss’. Nathan Outteridge summed it up brilliantly afterwards saying: “The wing tips and everything on the outboard is just all about surface interaction and trying to make sure you’re not having air escape down the foil. We’re just trying various tips down the foils trying to see what we can put out there so when the foil does pierce the surface it has the least effect on the lift across the entire foil.” Section 41. Alinghi Red Bull Racing rounded out a very productive week in Barcelona with a superb sailing session in a median of 10 knots of breeze and flat water, concentrating on boat handling and flying styles in their AC75 ‘BoatZero.’ Speaking afterwards, Maxime Bachelin was animated about the manoeuvres today saying: “Yeah, we tried different ride heights to feel a bit better the boat. Sometimes we lowered the ride height to have more grip on the water to do a tight turn and sometimes a bit higher to get the speed because we’re always trying to do the best manoeuvre and sometimes as well, we put two boards in the water to have more grip and today was the perfect day to do that.” Section 41. This is a brand to pay attention to guys. The Quarken 28 Cabin looks like a boat that will appeal to the family boaters that want something fuel efficient, offshore capable, all-weather friendly and also an overnighter! I was so impressed with the quality on the 27 t-top we tested earlier this year and this cabin version did not disappoint either. I had many questions about the offset cabin arrangement and if it actually works from a functional point of view so join me and let me know your thoughts in the comments. Finnish designed and built this little rocket is a sensible choice for the conservative boater in my opinion. It was champagne sailing for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli on Thursday out in Cagliari with Francesco Bruni and the fast-charging superstar of Italian sailing, Marco Gradoni, pushing the LEQ12 hard in breeze that at times touched 20 knots across billiard-table flat water. As one of the world’s truly great foiling sailors, Francesco Bruni is always an interesting interviewee and when asked by the recon team whether he could feel a difference between the port V3 foil and the starboard version 1 foil that the team have benchmarked all iterations against to date, and in particular the leeway profile of the foils, he responded: “Well there will always be a difference between the foils on leeway it's one of the biggest questions when you test and if you have slightly different foils it's very likely that you will have a slightly differently leeway. Having said that there are many ways to change that (cant/pitch etc) but if you have different foils you can expect different leeways, but there's not a magic recipe, there's not a magic number that is better than another one.” Section 41.
