Our first cold front approaches us in the Bahamas, and we get hit with it HARD! Leaving No Name Cay, we want to get ourselves further south in the Abacos, but this means taking the Whale Cay Cut. To avoid shoals in front of Treasure Cay, we need to make our way into the Atlantic through a strip of reefs and round a small island before cutting back into the Sea of Abaco. With east winds that are constantly pushing swells and a rage into here though, timing your trip through is everything. Once we're safely through our number one priority is finding shelter from a strong cold front about to blow through, and we hunker down in Marsh Harbour to try and find cover. When the storm hits us on the second day we are greeted with winds gusting near 50 and boats dragging around us through the harbor. Never a dull moment for our trip through the Abacos. Thanks to Bruce Van Sant’s book, “The Gentleman’s Guide To Passages South,” we learned how to utilize the swell bridle for rolly anchorages. As we made our way from the Exumas to Turks and Caicos, we found that many of the anchorages we went to were open bay anchorages. This meant we were exposed to the Atlantic Ocean and the swell coming in was no joke. It was darn near impossible to do the simplest of tasks, even just brushing your teeth! Nick quickly referred to Bruce’s book and bam there was the answer, the swell bridle to the rescue! It took us a couple of tries to master it but now we have it down pat. Then raft up with two other vessels in the stunning anchorage of Tokoyo Bay. https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we head to Sesape boat yard in Tulagi, Florida Islands. We were warned about getting boat work done in the Solomons, but the skilful labour at the boat yard matched anywhere else in the world. Without hauling out Nandji, we removed the drive shaft in water and replaced the bearing behind the stuffing box. I was sceptical at first at how they planned to achieve this and not sink Nandji, but I learnt a new trick and were very happy with the work they completed. If you need any boat work done, we recommend Sesape boat yard! With a healthy Nandji once again, we quickly return to Honiara to get some food and then head back across Iron Bottom Sound to the Florida Islands to convoy with two other vessels we met along the way. Rafting up in the stunning Tokoyo Bay, we enjoy a dinner with friends on the vessel Sand Pebble. We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, then bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off, sailing around the Pacific!
