The long awaited grand tour is here! Last summer we realized that the best way for us to pay off student debt would be to become minimalists and build a tiny house. Soon after, we bought a 24 ft short school bus, ripped out the seats and built a tiny house inside. Our conversion took us six weeks of intensive labor but it was well worth the time and effort. We love our skoolie tiny house and we love living the van life. We knew about the tiny house movement before our build, but didn't realize at that point how huge the van life movement is or how quickly the skoolie movement is growing. We are so grateful to be part of such a fun, loving and involved community. Building our home was a period of immense growth. We grew new muscles, new skills, new love for each other and a new appreciation for our home and our few belongings. We anticipated the move from our 1100 sq ft apartment into our 115 sq ft tiny house to be somewhat difficult - to our surprise, it wasn't. We didn't miss our space or our material things. Instead we found ourselves happier and closer to nature and of course each other. The place in our lives where "things" use to be has been filled with experiences instead. We have lived in our short school bus full time for 6 months now and we love everything about it. Well.... almost everything, but we'll get into that another time. We hope you enjoy the tour. This Lerouge design displaces just over 7 tons for 47 feet of waterline. It sports a carbon rotating mast, hydranet sails and has tiller steering. It is an all epoxy resin, corecell construction. WE FINALLY BUY A SAILBOAT. It feels like we’ve been searching for a boat forever! In this episode we finally buy a boat, a beautiful Tartan 37. Before we find the Tartan, we look at two other options in the Milwaukee area: a Pearson 38 and a Southerly 35. The Pearson had been left on the hard for about five years, and the neglect shows. While the swing keel is a cool concept on the Southerly, this boat came with too much extra stuff (resulting in a higher price tag) that we didn’t need. We just know this Tartan is our boat. But how? They say you get a feeling, and even though we thought we had felt it before, this time is different. It helps that the buying experience unfolds without any drama (unlike our previous efforts to buy: i.e. a seller deciding he didn’t want to sell, another seller unable to finish work prior to closing). Lastly, the sellers of the Tartan have clearly doted on their boat — its condition is immaculate. The day of the survey starts with sunny skies and light winds. Just as the sellers are preparing the boat for the sea trial, a cold front moves in. The skies greys over and the winds start gusting. Both sails are raised, but only the 150% genoa is reefed slightly. During a tack, a jib sheet gets away, and the other jib sheet gets caught on a winch. Both Kirk and I are glad we can experience how the boat handles in stronger winds. And then, it’s closing day!
