After spending a big chunk of our budget on boat refit. We drive to the North-West Territories (NWT) on a mission to find the fine Morels mushrooms. After being in the bush for multiple weeks, we ended having to return close to empty-handed since it was one of the worst seasons in decades. We finalize a few last minute projects on SV Blackdragon, finally give up our slip (boat parking spot) and cast the lines. IN THE NEXT EPISODE: We get invited to a fishing lodge in Bamfield Canda and working our way down the West coast towards San Francisco. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Finally a new video. We are back and in action after a minor boat refit down here in New Zealand. In this epic video as we check out of Tonga and hit the high seas for our much anticipated passage to New Zealand. We had a hilarious run-around just trying to check out of Tonga. But we finally nailed it and were happily let out of the country! The weather window was short with ever increasing winds and waves. We needed to get going ASAP. With a short stay at Minerva and a bucket list item checked off, when we took a left turn out of the atoll and pointed our bow towards New Zealand. The weather allowed for a rum line passage with a northeaster pushing us the whole way. A short passage for us but what can be, and has been for many, an arduous multi week slog. And wow what a weather window it was… QUICK WET BOUNCY AND FAST. Ahem well yeah your mind could go to the gutter with that description, but we broke records on our speedy little Nahoa. 200 nautical miles in one day. An average over 8 knots and did I mention the crazy most uncomfortable motion and loud creaky banging passage ever? Although it was awful, cold, uncomfortable we finally made it into the Bay of islands on a dark blustery day. Tied up to the quarantine dock we popped the champagne and had a blissful night in the calm waters of the Marina. And believe it or not, they let us in the country! (with only minor confiscations of seeds and bear spray) Customs welcomed with warm arms! What a day. What a week. With the bikinis put away we bundle up in the nights. Thankfully we didn’t toss that down duvet we thought we’d never ever need again. Stay tuned as we freeze our bottoms around the northern tip of New Zealand! #17t Spares for a sailboat trip to Circumnavigate | Sailing Sisu catamaran in Cape Town South Africa
This week we share what we think we may need in general, but with an eye on the long cold trip around Europe. What spares does one need? How many? Where do you store it? This is always the clash...one may be able to buy two of each pump or valve or pipe or screw or lines....but where do you store it? So, one really needs to prioritize and only the most important spares can come on board. Whether you’re sailing solo or double-handed, it is perfect for your adventures at sea or on a lake! Boat of the Year Award | Best Innovation | by Sailing World U.S.A. "The thing was a blast. I couldn't believe how well it sailed. You could have some serious fun with this, especially in big breeze." -------------------------- ** The Tiwal story ** * The Birth of Tiwal * As a girl, the first time our founder Marion Excoffon was told, “No!” by her father when she asked to use the family boat, her life as an inventor began. It was then she started dreaming of building her own craft, an ambitious feat that would come true years later. On the road to creating an innovative high-speed vessel for everyone from kids and first timers to expert sailors who want to test limits, there were a number of prototypes, failures, challenges and headaches. But, if there’s one thing Marion’s known for, it’s her sailor’s grit! * Combining Fun & Technology * The award winning Tiwal concept is easy assembly and storage - maximum fun and performance for watersports and activities. A Tiwal isn’t your average dinghy! Our design is the result of tons of coordination, talent, and technological savvy. * A Growing Global Community * For our community of Tiwal skippers (more than 2000 worldwide!) all this innovative design means their focus is fixed on the pleasures of watersports and having tons of fun on a responsive sailing craft. With excellent upwind and downwind abilities combined with high-speeds, Tiwals are a part of both fun and professional performance. The Tiwal 3 received the Boat of the Year (Best innovation) Award 2014 from Sailing World in the USA and the Red Dot Award, with recognitions, accolades, and smiling faces continuing to join together on the waves worldwide. **NOW SOLD** Launched in October 2010 in Pittwater, ‘Watershed’ was commissioned for a private family syndicate who have enjoyed her exclusively since new. She is now presented for sail with the team at Yoti Sydney Harbour. ‘Watershed’ is a two-cabin layout and, for a boat of her size, provides a great interior layout with everything you could need for weekends afloat, inshore or offshore cruising. Her mahogany and cherry wood interior offers two enclosed cabins with a large double owners cabin aft, a comfortable enclosed head with hot and cold shower. She also offers internal access to a large cockpit storage locker. Sailing has been made very easy with the signature Hanse self-tacking jib, roller furler and with an additional overlapping #1 genoa and gennaker for longer distance cruising at your fingertips, Watershed is well equipped for all round sailing adventures. She’s quick, light and responsive on the helm with a great open cockpit and well equipped with a colour Raymarine C90 Chartplotter mounted on the steering binnacle, with wind speed and depth instruments to compliment. She’s easily handled solo or two up but offers plenty of room for the whole family or a group of friends. The fold down swim platform behind the wheel allows easy access to the water with the aid of a stainless-steel swim ladder, while her steering wheel folds allowing even more space to the open transom. To top off her inventory, she offers an inflatable dinghy and to add to the package there is a stainless-steel BBQ with s/s gas bottle mounted on the pushpit. Watershed is powered by a Yanmar 22hp diesel engine with very low hours and she is ready to sail away. For more information and to view please contact Sonia Robinson for further details.

Patrick Childress Sailing. SV Brick House. Who is Patrick and why a Youtube channel? Patrick and Rebecca Childress are sailing around the world on their 1976 Valiant 40, SV BRICK HOUSE, one of the sailing world’s most famous Bluewater Cruising sailboats. Patrick learned to sail when he was a young child, but Rebecca didn’t learn to sail until she was in her 20s when the sailing bug bit her hard! Patrick completed a solo-circumnavigation on Juggernaut, a Catalina 27 in his younger days. He has been published in most U.S. and many foreign sailing magazines, for both his writing and photography. He co-authored a book titled “The Cruising Guide to Narragansett Bay and the South Coast of Massachusetts”. He holds his 500 Ton Masters Captains License, and is an active delivery captain and instructor. His Ham license is a General. Captain Patrick Childress owned a home improvement business in Newport, RI but retired in June 2007 to cruise a second time around the world on Brick House. He is also, most importantly, Captain of SV Brick House, AND married to Rebecca Taft, now Rebecca Childress! (July 4, 2007) Rebecca Childress (formerly Rebecca Taft) is an accomplished sailor as well. She has owned many boats ranging from a 17′ MacGregor, a Catalina 27′ and a 36′ Catalina, and now the Valiant 40 that she purchased a few years before meeting Patrick. (Lucky Patrick hah?) Before meeting Patrick and heading out on this circumnavigation, she had completed numerous blue water passages between Rhode Island and the Caribbean and passages across the Gulf of Mexico. Cruising has included the Bahama Islands, New England, Nova Scotia, the Florida coast and the BVIs, all in preparation for the day she could circumnavigate. Rebecca holds her 50 Ton Masters Captains License with towing and sailing endorsements. She is also a General Licensed Ham Radio Operator. She met Patrick on her first NARC Rally from Newport to Bermuda. She had always dreamed of sailing around the world, and knew that a passage to Bermuda in November would teach her more about heavy weather sailing since it is usually rough that time of year. Several years later when Patrick and Rebecca got together, they set their sites on earning enough money to cruise around the world together! Three years later, they had saved just enough money and were ready to move aboard! First mate Rebecca became a successful Realtor in Newport, RI, and has an extensive list of Computer Certifications and experience as well. Now they are both retired! After almost 8 years of exploring the Globe, they decided to add another crew member to Brick House. This was while in the island nation of Palau. They got Lily, a 7 week old practically wild little tiger kitten from a local apartment building. She has grown up on Brick House, learning how to sail ( the first time a freighter passed and stirred up a wake, she vomited at the sight of it. She hasn’t been sick since, even in 50 knots of wind!) She has learned how to fish, lets us know when people approach the boat, and has learned how to swim too. With almost 15,000 miles and 18 countries under her belt, she is a well traveled cat. When she gets to a marina, she decides its time for her to to see the world! I guess she takes after us! Together, they make a great team taking our home around the world! There’s no sailing in this blog but we did get to explore the snow-capped mountains that we could see from our boat in Lefkas Marina. We hired a car and headed for the hills - an easy journey as there were hardly any cars on the road, so we wound our way through tunnels to Metsovo, a small, alpine-like village with cobbled streets and cute houses. We spoilt ourselves by getting a room in a homely hotel with great people and treated ourselves tp takeaways and baths every night! It was probably about four months since any of us had had a bath - that's one of the things you really miss on a boat - you have a shower but no bath. We headed for the famous monasteries at Meteora - a UNESCO World Heritage Site which consists of six monasteries built on top of massive stone pillars well away from civilization. If you're female you have to borrow one of their fashionable skirts to cover up the lower part of your body out of modesty and respect. The kids were spooked a bit by the collection of skulls and bones but thought the monastery was really impressive. We had to wind through little paths and cut through the rock tunnels to get to the monasteries - I wouldn't say the kids enjoyed all the walking but they certainly got their weekly exercise in that day! The next morning we had a traditional rustic breakfast with Kalamta olives and spinach pie then tried to find information on skiing - but there wasn’t much at all. We finally worked out that there were some small slopes further up the mountains - they didn't take cards so we scraped up just enough cash for ski hire and lift pass. It's quite a struggle for a young child to learn how to ski because it's really tiring on their muscles, so just before our youngest was ready to give up we switched to the toboggans - then situation completely changed - in fact it became quite competitive between parents and kids! The next day we discovered that there were bigger ski lifts higher up the mountains in Anilio ski resort - a 30 minutes drive from Metsovo - with freshly groomed snow. Some liveavord friends - Julie and Simon were also in the area and offered to help teach the kids as Simon was a qualified ski instructor! There weren't many people at the resort and we almost had the place to ourselves - a bit like booking a private ski slope. Our youngest had another go and was much better learning from someone other than his parents. So, it finally clicked with him and he also learned how to use the button lift by himself. By the end of the second day we were skiing as a family but had to say goodbye to Simon and Julie as they were heading off. We were so grateful for their help that day. The next day we couldn't resist and came back again – trying the smaller slopes and practicing what they’d learned before getting on the chair lift to the top of the mountain to try more challenging slopes! The view from the top was spectacular and we could see all the way to the Pindos mountain range. We saw the tracks of big brown bears in the freshly fallen snow and our youngest worried about getting eaten but then thought that Mon and Dad getting eaten would be awesome. We like taking risks and stepping outside our comfort zone so we went for it, and skied all the way down, then for a bit of excitement we created some jumps too. Once our youngest had his confidence, there was no stopping him and we hardly saw him after that. It felt like we were a part of Greek elite society in the resort but the price was very reasonable - 25 euros for all day ski hire and adult lift pass and for kids it was 15 euros.. and no queues at all. Greece isn't a place you'd normally think about skiing but we'd recommend it. It's fantastic for the kids, they don't have to queue and they can just go up and down on their own as often as they like. The Corinth canal is closed because some rocks fell into it and we don't know whether we can easily get to Athens via the southern route, so we're not really sure where we're gonna end up in the next blog but we'll definitely be sailing again! This passage north through the Malacca Strait was the most turgid and longest night sail of our lives. Ploughing directly into 4m waves and 20kts of wind on the nose is no fun. 👍 If you enjoyed this video, please LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE & SUBSCRIBE,. Your feedback gets us noticed by YouTube and helps people discover us. So thank you. At times we were barely making 1kt. With no bolt holes along the coast of Malaysia, and a hostile shore along Sumatra, it wasn't safe to drop the anchor to wait out the weather. It was enough to try the patience of any sailor. We have a fantastic community of individuals who support us on PATREON and through the RUM FUND. Not only has this fantastic generosity enabled us to upgrade and add to our camera equipment, but we have bought better laptops and sound gear, and now have access to some of the best editing software available. Without your encouragement we would not be producing such regular videos or be able to continue to push and stretch our imaginations, both in terms of creativity and sailing to new destinations. Please feel free to subscribe to our channel as well as our other social media, to give yourself the best chances of winning!! Anyway, back to this weeks episode. We wrap up warm as the weather is not behaving and through coincidence end up anchored outside Cape Canaveral as Space X schedules a launch. So midnight finds us huddled in the cockpit waiting. It was worth it!!! The sky lit up, as this magnificent rocket took to the sky, followed a few seconds later by such a roar. Finally we tie up in Palm Beach to await a weather window to cross to the Bahamas. Jason & Jennifer from Annapolis, Maryland talk about their TIWAL 3 inflatable sailing boat. They sail her with their kids, and the kids by themselves. Their boy even sailed once with dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico. This small inflatable sailboat is easily assembled in 20 minutes without any tools. Easy to handle, its sailing qualities will give you a thrilling experience. Very responsive, stable, and comfortable in light winds, the Tiwal 3 is dynamic in more challenging conditions.
