Episode 24 Atlantic Crossing. We depart Las Palmas on our first ocean crossing for St Lucia. Our final crew member, Laura, arrives and I do our final briefing before we slip the lines. Las Palmas does a fantastic send off for all the yachts in the ARC, the atmosphere and the tension in the air was just incredible. It’s almost impossible to not be at least a little emotional as you depart for the race start line along with 200 other yachts all anticipating spending approx 3 weeks at sea. We crossed the start line under very light conditions and a choice: 1. Head south for Cape Verde with no wind and the motors on for 5 days 2. Head west direct for St Lucia and a nasty looking low pressure system I chose option 2 as I hate motoring and we discussed that as soon as we felt we’d had enough of the upwind sailing, that we’d turn to the south and with unlimited weather forecasts from our Iridium Go we could keep an eye on the low pressure and turn south just when we needed to. Now all we had to do was get into the swing of living together, enjoy the sailing and keep watch! Leisure time for Karl and me, jipiiieeeeh!!! I moved Karl a little closer to the surf spot in Pavones and borrowed a surf board of my new neighbor Tassiano to try and catch some waves. Since it's been a good ten years since I last surfed, I did a lot of washing machine and paddling, but stood for some short seconds on a couple of waves. 1 YEAR FULL TIME LIVING ON LITHIUM (ON OUR CATAMARAN CALLED IMPI) - What are our thoughts, experiences and was it worth our investment? How do we charge and discharge lithiums onboard, what changes have we made, what have we learned and how do we best share this knowledge with others considering changing batteries on their boats. This video share is intended for those who have written to us on numerous occasions asking for our opinion on LiFePO4 batteries installed on Impi. To answer some of the questions we interview Jack Peters From OUTBACK MARINE in Southport Australia - we also share some footage of SAM BROWN from OVERKILL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS in Pittwater Australia since these folks have been extremely helpful in sorting out the systems we have on Impi. It is sometimes difficult to find professional people who will openly share their knowledge, and whilst Jack says he may not have had enough opportunity to share enough details around his comments, we decided to share it anyway since we believe it provides enough of a base to work from for ordinary people like ourselves who live and sail upon the oceans. For this reason I must say this video is NOT INTENDED FOR EXPERTS - it is really an act of love for those who follow our travels and wish to learn a bit more about setting up their boats, what to look for when purchasing a used boat and to be able to figure out at what cost changing these systems will come at. Now cost is something everyone asks me about. By watching the video you will understand why this varies from boat to boat and why I can’t give anyone a clear cut answer to this. On Impi we had a system that could easily be programmed for Lithium batteries and there were added items along the way such as isolators, fuses etc. that all cost additional money in labour. So one needs to evaluate this against the systems you have in your boat since purchasing a complete system such as the Outback Marine System may seem expensive on the outset, however the system includes many of the items needed as ‘add on equipment’ and also being contained the way it is, also saves on additional labour costs. So - with this in mind let me share the cost on Impi: 1. 400AH EV POWER LiFePO4 packs @ AU$ 3100.00 each x2 = 800AH @ AU$6200.00 2. BMS (BCU-PPAK-PLUS-4C @ AU$ 200 each x 2 (for redundancy between packs) = AU$ 400.00 So we could have purchased one pack of 400AH @ AU$3100 plus the BMS @ AU$200 = AU$ 3300.00 for a 400AH pack including the BMS Because we want redundancy we put in two packs and two separate BMS units at a total cost above of AU$ 6600.00 In addition we decided to bypass the internal relays of the BMS and run 2 LARGE commercial GIGAVAC RELAYS because of the loads we place on our system. Outback Marine already carry similar already included in their full system. On Impi these cost as follows: 1. REL-GXL 14B2A - Gigavac Latching Relays 500A each @ AU$ 284.00 ea = AU$ 568.00 All pricing excludes Transport. Regarding the alternators: We used Prestolite 170A alternators to replace our Balmar 150A (which were a disaster on Impi - we lost 4 of these before going to Prestolite). Cost at Baxters in Sydney: AU$280.00 each The thing with the Prestolites is they have internal regulators that need to be converted to external regs. To make them ‘ready for external regs’ cost an additional AU$ 220 so the total cost per modified alternator was AU$ 500.00 ea. This excludes brackets and other items required - e.g. Pulleys, belts, Temp sensors etc. All pricing is a year old at the time of this posting and may have changed. High Drama at Cape Horn for two more boats in the Volvo Race. Early in leg 7 leader MAPFRE experiences a mast track failure and the crew had a shore team of three flown in to Ushuaia Argentina waiting for them to round the Cape so that they could fix the mast. BUT rounding the Cape and hardening up the force on the broken track causes the Mainsail to erupt. So the shore team fixed both problems and the yacht went back to the spot where they retired from racing and 18 hours later resumed racing. Meanwhile Vestas 11th Hour Racing close to the Falklands was dismasted. Charlie Enright and the crew of Vestas who have had a incident filled race so far with an accident near Hong Kong and missing the Hong Kong-Auckland Leg now lose their mast in the next leg that they contest. The current situation in Leg 7 is Scallywag and Vestas out and Mapfre a day behind the fleet now led by Brunel and Dongfeng hot on their stern and looking good to take the points lead. The Sailing Festival part of the regatta wrapped up with a 'Round Tortola, an Absolut Full Moon Race, and a group of sailors from the regatta helped clean up a beach in Brewer's Bay on the lay day with the BVI Wombles. Friday's race day was big breeze for both the SOL and Norman Circles.

I have been wanting to try fly fishing for some time now. I really didn't want to put a lot of money into it, so off to Craigslist I went! Warning: So, after reviewing this footage and seeing how BAD I actually was, I must say, if you are an avid fly fishing person,... WATCH AT OWN RISK. I am seriously doing it ALL wrong! We renamed our boat from Brisa to Dodi when we bought her. It has taken sometime to get to the renaming ceremony, but better late than never. As we prepare for our trip and travelling to the blue water of the Bahamas and Season 2 of The Boat Life we were able to get our friends together to do a renaming and christening of our Sailboat Dodi.
