Highlights of our 1,200-mile sail from New Zealand to Fiji in May, 2017, aboard the sailing vessel Avalon. We left Marsden Point Marina (NZ) under sunny skies. Over the next 8-9 days, we faced some big wind, rain, and seas. But we were also becalmed for a couple days, floating in a completely flat and glassy South Pacific Ocean. This is day three in our voyage around Catalina Island in a Pacific Seacraft Dana 24 sailboat. Our first order of business was to dive in into the fifty-something degree F water and clear the fouled prop (see the last episode. We made our best attempt to sail all the way back to Dana Point but the winds did not cooperate. On a positive note, we enjoyed several great dolphin sightings and manage to see a couple of whales (at a distance!) before returning to the slip!

Behind the scenes using Onboard Helmet cameras for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. This is my vlog of the Journey and experience whilst I was there, the temperature was usually around minus 10 it was really cold. I was in South Korea to look after the live tv - helmet cameras on the down hill skiing. I developed the system back in London and so then I operate them during the events. I filmed this vlog with only a Samsung Galaxy S7. For the middle 12 days I had the worst cold ever so I didn't film anything on those days but this is the best of what happened in a month. We're back in Whangarei after spending three weeks on land! I (chris) had an amazing time on land and I'm itching to get back on the water. But before that happens we've got work to do..... We plan to sail to Tonga in May and there is a LOT to get done to prepare for the trip. This episode is the first in a series about what it takes to sail a boat and a family 1200 miles across the Pacific. The core of "Family Circus" is Chris (Dad / Captain), Sayo (Mom / Admiral), Aya (First Officer / Deckhand) and Miya (Baby / Stainless Polisher). After many years in business in Vancouver we were tired of life inside the box and wanted to make a change, we just weren't exactly sure what would be next. In July of 2016, when Sayo was six months pregnant, we decided (somewhat at the last minute) to fly to New Caledonia for one last holiday before the baby was born. It is leaking again by the bollard in starbord side, but this time the water is running into the boat by the two screws that keeps the deck together. The simplest trick is to mount some butyl sealant to the screws at the head to keep the water outside the boat. In a other video I have covered the tree screw holes by the bollard with Tec7 and tape, this seems to be watertight.

Treated myself to a visit of the Interboot in Friedrichshafen in late 2017. Met this nice family selling the New Zealand Takacats in Germany and Europe (www.takacat.de). They took me out on the lake for a spin in one of their boats I don't know the exact model, but the one in the video belongs to the "Sport" series. Takacats differ from other small inflatable craft in that they are "cats", catamarans. Being cats they don't have this shallow-V hull form, but instead two cylindrical tubes and a "deck" in the middle. This provides a lot of stability, speed potential and a smoother ride on the water. All in all, a lot of cool ideas are implemented in the boats. They can be open at the bow for easy access from the water (LX series) and/or at the back ("open transom") for safety reasons (a wave from behind wouldn't stay in the boat) (LX and Sport series). Having fought with tiny uncomfortable dinghies during several sailing trips, the Takacat was a welcome change of pace. I liked it a lot. I'm not affiliated with Takacat in any way.
