It took a while to get her in the water as you may have seen in season one. Our 1990 Island Packet IP27 has been a great home. we have mostly been in a marina getting familiar with the systems and honing our sailing skills. We wanted to share the details on our boat with our viewers. We are we proud of the cushions we made including sewing cutting, foam, and picking fabric. We find our boat to be quite spacious even at 27'. It has 6'2" head room and as we joke it is the perfect 2 bedroom / 1 bathroom with a lania, florida room, and rooftop porch ( the bow). Road Trip to the National parks! This is Melissa's first trip to the Gateway Arch and Nic's fourth, but both of our first times going to the top. From the top of the arch to the East you see the Mississippi River and Illinois. This was also where the United States ended up until The Louisiana Purchase in 1803. From the West the view is of St. Louis including the ballpark, the old court house, and various downtown buildings. Construction began on the Arch in 1963 and was completed in 1965. The workers took no days off and it was anticipated that 13 casualties would occur from the difficult nature of the construction and thankfully they all survived St Louis is a beautiful, clean city with sprawling parks and outdoor spaces. We set our sights on The Human Rights museum as we had heard about this back in the US. It is a stunning building and architecturally astounding. There is enough information packed in this museum to take days to get through. It boasts impressive interactive exhibits. This museum is a must see. A short walk from the museum is the infamous "dick" bridge. It is a lovely bridge if I do say so myself, but there is a very phallic beam as the centerpoint. Either way it is fun to look at and talk about all the shapes that it looks like. This bridge spans the Red River. It was a big hub for trading in the late 1800's. Today it has pontoon boat tours (fenders out of course) and will host a Dragon Boat race in early September. As we sat in the warmth of the late afternoon at The Forks overlooking the river, we got to watch the Dragon Boat practice. Very intimidating sport from what I saw. Needless to say, when you are downtown, put the max amount of time in the parking meter so it doesn't interrupt your sightseeing. Also, take some selfies in front of the Giant Winnipeg sign in the park near The Human Rights Museum, it is just plain fun! This is The Boat Life. Melissa's boat without live worms and Nic's with worms. Melissa was the first line in, with the first bite. Turns out she only caught a crayfish. It was cute and hung on but she couldn't bring it onto the boat and the cameras weren't rolling. Meanwhile Nic's boat loaded up their hooks with worms and got to fishing. It was a slow start but by the third location they were getting consistent bites. Unfortunately Nic's boat suffered a series of line tangles but it didn't hurt their game At the end of the day they got 3 walleye and 1 bass. Never seeing Walleye or Pickerel we eagerly returned to our rafted boat base and got our fish fry on. It was really delicious fish, so good we may not have captured it on camera. Yesterday we visited Mount Rushmore but left too late to complete the remainder of our 11 ½ hour road trip. After a later stop in Bismarck, ND we continue on without a hitch. That is until we arrive at the border of Canada. In true to our luck form the border crossing site #10 had unknowingly to us been closed, on the Canadian side, two days prior. Why you might ask? Because they found asbestos in the building. This caused us to retrace our steps South and take a gravel road approximately 20 miles away to the next crossing. At the border they search the car, standard protocol for crossing the border in a car owned by someone else. The border patrol agents were very thorough but polite. Once we get through we reach our final destination. Winnipeg, Manitoba to meet up with some boating friends from Florida. This is just the beginning of The Boat Life, Canadian Edition. The Road trip has been a success so far. We are not at our final destination, but we are close. It is getting chilly even in August. This is why we moved south! Seeing Mt. Rushmore was worth it.
