After many delays and dramas, we finally got to sit down and finish our final episode. The boat is safely home and on the market and we had the most phenomenal trip back. We are finally on our way home! 1200nm from Tonga to NZ has begun. We have two great crew member join us, as we head south into brilliant weather enabling us to stop for a few days at Minerva Reef. This place has everything we could want and more. An untouched paradise 250nm south of Tonga. Turquoise waters, beautiful coral, plentiful sea-life, an abundance of crays and some great people with the same idea! Definitely a must-stop for anyone heading up or down from NZ in this direction. We are still enjoying the beautiful Ha’apais, a small archipelago in the middle of Tonga. We find a desolate island which we relish for as long as possible before heading to the main town to do a local clear in.. Weird we know.. We chill out for our last couple of days in the southern islands where we meet some great friends and have a few days of quality time. Next stop, Tongatapu! We check out a bit more of Vava’u before heading to the next set of islands in Tonga. Our transit is a short one but is fairly full on! We see dolphins, whales, catch a tuna, have wind squalls, have wind holes, get a little seasick, and eventually arrive into full on blue skies. We do a little catch and cook with our beautiful Tuna, making a delicious ceviche (lime cooked fish), surrounded by all the colours from some stunning vegetables! We get a quick day or two in Tonga after clearing in with our guests Louis and Mercedes. It’s a action packed few days with windsurfing, snorkelling, cave exploring and exploring the natural beauty of Vava’u. We are then left on our own as they continue their travels around the world: Next stop, New Zealand. Over the next few days, with the weather forecast showing strong winds and miserable weather, we decide to hang around the main town of Neiafu for the Blue Water Sailing Festival. We are invited to sail on ‘Desiderata’, a 66' classic ketch, in the festival’s fun race. We had an absolute ball, apologies for abundance of footage!! Tonga Take 2: We depart Maupihaa for a now 1100nm crossing to Tonga after our impromptu stop to fix our water pipe and refill our tanks. The new crew are dosed up on seasick pills which is just as well cause it’s a rough ride! Awesome wind pushing us along but a terrible sea state that keeps us on our toes. We leave the island of Maupiti (the best place ever) and embark on our 1200nm crossing to Tonga. 20miles in we are struck with a bilge full of water! We go to turn around and are hailed by other cruisers in our vicinity who offer to fill us in the next atoll, Maupihaa (which has absolutely NO services), out of the goodness of their hearts. This little atoll of Maupiti makes us very, very happy. We had the best time ever here. The anchorage is perfect, the beaches are like golden pillows scattered amongst coconut palms. The skyline is dominated by a beautiful peak that gave us the most amazing views of the entire atoll. At only 8km, a circumferential walk of the island leads to a flood of fresh fruit, mesmerising flowers and gracious locals. And oh my god those manta-rays were something so unique and special. We would have loved to have spent longer here, but with guests on board, we had to make their flight in Tonga. And once a southerly kicks up in these parts, there is no exiting the pass until it disappears!! One day we will be back and we will stay in here for as long as we like. Prep prep prep!! That’s what happens before we have guests on board. And this time is no different. We are joined by Adam’s cousin Louis and his girlfriend Mercedes, who have left school to venture on a gap year around the world, and have decided to start their adventure with a 3 week trip on L’Attitude Adjustment! Lucky kids… We pick them up from Raiatea and flit across to Bora Bora on a small 30nm crossing. Turns out one of our guests isn’t as sea worthy as he thought he was… But we make it and the smiles are back on as we check out this famous resort-ridden island. It truly is one of the most beautiful of French Polynesia, but with its resorts and restrictions, we only spent a short time checking it out as I doubt we will ever go there by plane! We clear out of French Polynesia here as it is the last port of call, even though there are still some other islands further west of Bora Bora. Thankfully they allow you to continue on and visit the other islands, even after you have cleared. This saves us having to trek back to the larger island to clear out and obviously brings a small amount of tourism to these smaller islands. This episode we are based in another one of the Society Islands in French Polynesia, Raiatea/Tahaa. We find the anchorages tricky with the steep topography of the sea floor, and check out a wicked coral garden. Some of the best snorkelling we have done yet and a nice spot to hang out for a few days next to the resort. We leave the tranquil paradise of Kauehi for the bustling atoll of Fakarava. Sarah’s friend Lucy flies in and we take her on a flying visit through this large atoll. We only really explore the southern end where there is a famous pass known for its epic snorkelling and diving. We have snuck into Raroia to avoid the westerly blowing and end up having a rather rough night. We wake up about 1am to realise we have dragged anchor and according to our navigation system, are sitting on top of the reef! We know we are not actually beached as we are flung side-to-side by the mother natures fierce breath. We move to another spot and head back to a very light sleep… In the morning out dinghy is nowhere to be seen. The line had been cut by the propellor during the night when we had shifted and we had no idea. Luckily for us the beaches are directly downwind, so we take our trusty patchy paddleboard ashore and hunt along the coastline for Roger. We find him at a local pearl farm a kilometer down from the village and a lovely man had bought him off the reef and onto the beach for us. So we were soooo fortunate that everything was safe and sound - boat and dinghy! How different that outcome could have been… Once the wind and rain have petered off a bit, we head ashore to get some incredibly slow internet, and meet some fabulous characters on the way. A young local family takes us in, shows us their athletic prowess, and gift us with some beautiful pearls. We aim to leave as soon as the wind tuns back to the SE, but regrettably look back on this village and this family that we should of stayed for a lot longer than we did. Our next and original destination is Kauehi, and we are not disappointed by its preceeding reputation. A gorgeous anchorage that we have all to ourselves. We cruise the inner reef finding sheltered spots to relax, kitesurf and explore. It is also a great place to spend Adams birthday. Fatu Hiva: The golden anchorage of the Marquesas! The crowd of yachts arriving from their pacific crossing, is surrounded by steep, intimidating pillars covered in foliage and mountain goats! The valley cuts deep into the mountainside of the island and is covered with an abundance of pamplemousse, mangoes, limes, squeeling piglets and barking doggies. Absolute heaven! We share a fabulous dinner at a locals house with other yachts in the bay, before setting off first thing the next morning for the Tuatomotus. On the way, we have a immensely rare ancounter where we not only come across another yacht at sea (fairly uncommon…) but it happens to be our great friends Ross & Jo Blackman off Soujourn II. We manage to swap some delicious apple bran muffins for some Wahoo that we still have going from when we departed Tahuata last episode. We also take some mint shots of this ocean encounter as not often do you manage to get shots of both of you standing on the side of your yacht in the middle of the ocean while it is sailing.. Such a cool experience for both boats. The wind changes as a storm starts to pass through and we get westerlies blowing us the wrong way, so we opt to change course and follow Soujourn II into the atoll of Raroia. We drop anchor here and get ready to wade out the weather system until it changes back to the handy trades that can help us sail further east. We are in the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas. Our first adventure is a horse trek through the forsets, mountains and ridges with our amazing guide Paco. This was one of Adam’s first horse treks and apart from falling off twice and keeping everyone very entertained, he absolutely nailed it! It was hands down one of the most marvelous experiences we have had to date. A massive recommendation for anyone travelling to these parts of the world. We then scooted back down to Tahuata for a few days to see some cruising friends and wait for the wind to die a little so we could head further SE to Fatu Hiva. This 40nm distance was upwind, so we knew we had to plan our crossing to make the most of any ease in the trade winds. In Tahuata we were again blown away by the generosity of the people here and can’t thank them enough for their open-hearted nature that made us feel so welcome. Until next time amigos! The reason being is that there is a haulout facility in one of the southern islands that we needed to get to for Adam to fly out for a week of work, so we opted to do the Northern islands first as we had more time to explore them than the smaller southern islands. It was a great trip all things considered when you’re heading into the wind….But we were so happy to have arrived into a beautiful bay that we had all to ourselves – for at least one night anyway! The next morning the swell direction had changed for the worst and we had a horrid rolly northerly squeezing into the bay and sending L’Atty into a dance frenzy around her anchor. We headed East to find a sheltered bay and ended up skipping to the next island Tahuata where most of the boats in the area seemed to have gathered! It was great catching up with some cruising friends that we hadn’t seen since the Caribbean, but we soon had to depart for the Atuona Port of Hiva Oa where we got L’Atty lifted out (there are no marinas in these islands..) and got a well-earned break for 10 days. We have arrived in the Pacific Islands! Our first couple of weeks in the Marquesas is like an early homecoming. The friendliness and generosity of the people, the sweet, succulent fruit juices dripping down our chins and of course, natures landscaped marvel that is this enchanting island chain. We hang with fellow cruisers, try local delicacies, relish in the plethora of fish and colourful reefs, and gorge ourselves on the fresh produce. We begin our crusiing at Ua Huka and move westwards to Nuku Hiva where we find one of our favourite anchorages of the trip so far – Anaho Bay.
