Also known as pilot whales, this species is part of the oceanic dolphin family, and therefore is odontocete (a toothed cetacean). They are considered whales because of their size, as adult males can exceed 5 metres in length. Calderon dolphins can weigh between 1 and 2 tonnes and they are easily identi able. The characteristic dorsal fin has a wide base and is set forward on the whale’s back, curved towards the tail. The bulbous head is globe-shaped head and ends in a very slight beak. The colour is very dark, nearly black. This species, resident in Tenerife, is the most frequently sighted during whale watching trips; in fact, they are considered the least migrant of marine species in the world. Pilot whales are very sociable, with a strong sense of family or group. As they do not hide from humans, it has been possible to study them extensively. I test a back-up system for the autopilot (with mixed results). High winds at the end of my 180 NM leg from Ireland to the UK lead to a divert of 90 NM to France rather than entering a narrow port. I demonstrate my solo technique for gybing. Several dockings filmed, including a blooper.

In this episode the mast and equipment at the top needed a good clean after all the sand from the Sahara that was blown across over the winter. Dort Schleifen wir das Teakdeck fertig, Streichen das Unterwasserschiff und bereiten das Schiff für den Schwertransport ans Mittelmeer vor. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sailing on Lake Maggiore In this episode we leave Switzerland and bring the ORIZON to Italy in the shipyard Piccaluga to Lisanza. April 2018. Wir sind auf dem Weg von Lübeck nach Helgoland. Nach einem verschneiten Ostern ist es auf der Eider kühl aber sonnig. Zwischen Süderstapel und Friedrichstadt mach ich mit der Sonx FDR-X 3000 eine Zeitrafferaufnahme. 2 1/2 Stunden in etwas mehr als 4 Minuten. Wir verlassen bei der Schleuse Nordfeld die Binneneider und passieren Straßenbrücke und Schleuse Friedrichstadt auf der Tiedeneider. Wer noch nie die Eider befahren hat, der sollte das wirklich einmal machen. Wunderschön! Auch wenn es kalt ist ... Wenn es geht, in 4K anschauen!

In this episode (part 1) we head out from St. John's Island, SC at 1st light, thru Elliot Cut at slack tide, across Charleston Bay...and dock at the Isle of Palms.
