Freshwater surfing! Kirk’s beyond stoked to get a chance to surf Lake Michigan. After leaving Charlevoix, we snuck into Leland just before a cold front moved in. The front brought strong winds that ended up sticking around for three days, which prevented us from being able to leave, but on the flip side, the sustained winds created a good sized wind swell. It wasn’t the best surfing conditions but it was more than enough to ride! We don’t have a surfboard on the boat, but were lucky enough to time our arrival in Leland with our friend Phil’s Hobie Cat company annual retreat. Phil brought Kirk an inflatable stand up paddle board to borrow for the day, and Kirk took full advantage. While waiting for the winds to subside, we spent an evening hiking up through the Whaleback Preserve, a nature reserve overlooking Lake Michigan. After day three in Leland, we got our chance to depart. The wind was still a force to be reckoned with, however. Thankfully a bunch of fellow boaters helped us get off the dock, and we were off! Episode 30 - We add our access hatch to our basin cabinetry to prevent any flexing while we epoxy her in. -We drew up our window frames on Solid Worx and got them cnc routered. We fit them in to make sure they were the correct sizes, we did not epoxy them on. We have decided to wait till we do the windows to prevent any damage to the frames due to our windows leaking a bit. -We fit in and epoxy the rest of our cabinetry frames. -My Grandpa and Aunt come to visit and make sure we haven't fallen asleep on the job :P -We remove our through hulls and show you how damaged and kaput they were. Ricky also explains some reasons why its sometimes a good idea to replace your through hulls if you have just purchased an older boat like we have. - We also received our gas water heater (geyser) in the post and chat a bit about it. Just a little update while we are on a week long sailing adventure.

This week we show how to make your own bungs for plugging holes or covering screws. We made hundreds of these in a simpler way when we were replacing all the molding and trim on our GulfStar, but now on the Formosa we needed to make a larger bung for the boom. This was something that we couldn't buy at a local chandlery so it was time to roll up our sleeves and be resourceful. We also show what we are considering on the design of our new solid lifeline replacement with stainless steel handrails. We are going to have 2 lifelines below the solid handrail and are considering all the other factors in how they attach to the pulpit. We are also considering some changes to lifelines and rails around the cockpit to build and raise the seating there. Additionally, we prepare the lower salon for varnish. We remove cabinet doors, hinges and sand and prepare the surface. We show the right and wrong ways of doing so. The keel is treated with rust converter and is ready for the first diluted coat of epoxy primer. I had a left over bucket of Hempels Light primer so I start with a single coat of that. Then I apply a coat of gelcoat to the fiberglass at the bow thruster hole and then start to apply the first coat of primer all over the bottom. After the first coat of primer I apply some Sikaflex 291i between the keel and the hull to prevent water from coming in to the keel bolts. The first two primer coats is applyed with a long shaggy paint roller but I find out that the cheaper and more fine paint rollers is the way to go. And then I spot a leak.

Turkey is amazing for cruising! The kids are loving the change of culture and in this episode Josh braves up for a famous Turkish shave. They didn't disappoint with the end result but it was hilarious watching his nose hair waxed out! We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! Seventy48 was a race held June 11th-13th 2018 in Port Townsend, WA before the Race to Alaska started. Shane entered in it with a paddleboard.
