* Update July 2019. We have had reports of stolen antifoul and severe malpractice since our visit to Port de Peche. Ryadh [21:25] https://www.facebook.com/BoatYachtServices/ has since set up his own business and we would only recommend contacting him for work in Tunisia. _______ The last blog left us in our little apartment getting electrocuted.. but with WiFi! We had toilets issues with our youngest (and Woody!) deciding to try out the Arabic 'hose pipes' instead of toilet tissue - let’s just say it wasn't pleasant. There was a laser zone near the apartment which the kids made full use of with their French friends who'd sailed in from Malta. We also met Ahmed, a lovely young guy who found us a violin school! But our boat was priority. Our bank refused to transfer money to Tunisia and we couldn't pay by Visa/Mastercard either so we had to draw out the maximum amount every day from the cash point (ATM) and we were concerned about covering costs. Tunisia is one of the cheapest if not THE cheapest place in the Mediterranean to get boat repairs done. But Port De Peche is still a working port - dirty, polluted and grimy with little Health and Safety. Woody was bitten by a boat yard dog and it’s not a place you’d normally take a family. One of the boats even fell from the crane - a bit disconcerting when you're about to launch! The strops of the crane were filthy and gritty and even though we put plastic on the hull, as you'll see in later blogs it wasn't enough to protect the new antifoul. Costs and pricing weren't always clear - forget computers and spreadsheets - it was all done with scraps of paper, drawings, a nod and handshake. With a language barrier too there is a lot of room for.. misinterpretation. So, we paid slightly more than we expected in the end and marked it down to experience but it was still a good deal. We made some good friends there too - Rihad - one of the workmen visited our boat with his wife and baby on our final night and we had a good chat about Tunisian life and their dreams of emigrating to Canada. Wages are low and conditions are tough for poor families without connections in Tunisia. Having said that, it's one of the more progressive liberal Islamic countries where Hijabs seem to be optional and ultra-conservatives rub shoulders with long haired girls in jeans. After replacing the sails, we headed North and managed a visit to a lovely cafe in Hammamet old town medina which we'd visited about eight years ago on a previous visit and topped up on banana splits! We anchored for a few days in the Gulf and the ‘pirate’ boats were a hit with the kids who loved copying the crew, swinging in the rigging and hanging off the spreaders. We refuelled and provisioned but even on a fuel dock you have to check in and out - they kind of like their paperwork - but the offices were full of armed guards so it's a bit disconcerting. Kalibia / Calibia - another fishing port - was our final stop as we waited for a weather window for Sardinia. Not the nicest place for the kids' birthdays but we found a lovely beach and restaurant called Monaco Bay where we could briefly escape from fishy smells and flies! We faced customs/coastguard/police/port authorities for the last time - always a complicated procedure, but especially when they lose your paperwork - then finally left for Sardinia! Dieses mal kommt unser Unterwasserschiff an die Reihe. Zwar haben wir schon beim Kauf des Bootes eine grobe Messung durchführen lassen, jedoch konnten wir das noch nicht im Detail machen. Das holen wir nach! Unser großartiger Gutachter Gregor, hat uns sein sehr teures und auch sehr professionelles Messgerät dafür ausgeliehen (Cygnus 4+). Damit kann man Stahldicken messen. Man trägt etwas Ultraschall-Gel auf die Stahlplatten auf und hält danach den Messkopf an diese Stelle. Somit bekommt man ziemlich genaue Messwerte. Natürlich haben wir uns nicht nur darauf verlassen, sondern klopfen das Schiff auch einmal komplett ab, um auch wirklich nichts zu übersehen. In dieser Folge schauen wir uns auch unseren zweiten Wassertank an und überlegen uns, wie wir am besten einen neuen Herd + Ofen installieren können. Sailing ORIZON - Segeln im Mittelmeer... Wir besuchen unsere ORIZON in der Trockenmarina Navy-Service im Rhone-Delta in Südfrankreich um nach dem Rechten zu sehen. Wir sind froh das unsere Persenning den starken Wind bisher überstanden hat und auch sonst am Schiff alles in Ordnung ist. Das Boot wird von uns winterfest gemacht und ein paar Einbauten und Reperaturen erledigen wir auch gleich noch. Am zweiten Tag stellt sich der Mistral ein und es bläßt in Böen mit 45 Knoten durch die Marina - spannend! Das Rhone-Delta ist eine tolle Gegend, die auch Camargue genannt wird, hier sehen wir Flamingos und Camargue-Pferde. ++++++++++++++ SV ORIZON - Sailing the Mediterranean Sea In this video we visit our dry-docked ORIZON at Marina Navy Service in the Rhone-Delta in southern France. We are glad that our Cover has survived the strong wind so far and everything else on the ship is in order. The boat is winterized by us and we make some installations and repairs. Underwater adventure world of Komodo National Marine Park. These are some of the action packed encounters I had during the 2018 peak diving season. Some of the locals refer to the diving area as "Current City". As the name suggests, most of the dive sites have strong currents. The most famous one being Shotgun. To fully enjoy these sites, make sure you have a fair amount of experience before you decide to dive here. The currents here is a good thing though, because with that comes the big fish, and that is what Komodo diving is most famous for. There are many sites where you can encounter Manta Rays and sharks. Off course the list of things to see here is too long to mention here. Unfortunately the quality of the footage in this video is not great (mostly quite bad actually) but you'll get the idea ... The footage was shot with a Canon G16 camera and the editing was done in iMovie. #Komodo #Liveaboard #Diving

This episode I visit Chris Rees, a very experienced boatbuilder who was behind various impressive projects including the enormous 3-masted lugger Greyhound and the replica fishing lugger Spirit of Mystery (which was sailed from the UK to Australia by Pete Goss as a tribute to the fishermen who undertook the same trip in the 1850s). He shows me around the boat that he is currently working on - a 1905 Pilot Cutter named Letty - and also tells me a little about how he became a boatbuilder. Finally we look at another boat that Chris is hoping to bring back to life - a historic local ferry, which up until recently was apparently the longest continuously running ferry in the country. Originally a Steam powered vessel, it was later modified with a diesel engine, but Chris is hoping to equip it with an Electric motor for the next period of service. Sharing recent events, our son Terry and Yolande visit Impi. We have STRONG WIND and we need to get Terry to the airport, so we are going to put our Lagoon 440 catamaran (IMPI) through it's paces. If anyone tells you that production cats are not fun to sail ... think again! It was meant to be a leisurely cruise, however once a racer always a racer and AJ & Atka pushed the caravan around the course in decent time. But results aren't important right?
