While Maya is out of the water, we explore Olympic and North Cascades National Parks. We also find some other issues with the boat that we fix ourselves.... and FINALLY we go cruising.
Nacho Postigo, navigator for Pier Luigi Loro Piana's 130ft (40m) Superyacht My Song, explains the complex weather scenario for the start of the RORC Transatlantic Race. Nacho predicts a complex weather scenario. High pressure should combine with the wind shadows of the Canary Islands to produce a tactical conundrum for the start of the race. "It's very interesting because we should have an area of very light winds for the start of the race," commented Nacho Postigo. "To add complexity to finding the best wind, the other Canary Islands that we must pass are very different to Lanzarote. Tenerife is 4,000 metres high creating a big wind shadow; even the smaller island of La Palma is 2,000 metres high. When the effect of the wind shadows is combined with the high pressure ridge, which is a moving target, it will be very tricky for the early part of the race."
Popular sailing vlogs have inspired us to buy a sailboat. We learned how to sail and are motivated to do more by watching YouTube. I sail single handed on Lake Wylie in the Carolina's and reflect on those that have influenced us with video. Ashley shows one of her new shirt designs. Wes (Harper and Foote) gets on board, plays guitar and I call out a specific viewers comment. Movie clips: Stepbrothers, Anchorman Casey Neistat clips: Do What You Can't, $2 Million Dollars

My Bavaria boat is 14 years old and the exhaust elbow has never been removed or cleaned so thought it was time, and also due to many is clocked up with carbon buildup and water deposits. If you don't get enough water flow the engine will get to hot and cause the seawater to evaporate at the exhaust elbow. Carbon buildup will also prohibit the engine from taking maximum rpm. and you will also get an increased consumption. To clean the exhaust elbow from carbon buildup and water deposits the best stuff to use is hydrochloric acid over night
WHAT A YEAR! 2018 kicked off in Lake Garda, Italy, with the first ever GC32 World Championships which saw the largest ever foiling fleet thanks to the coming together of the GC32 Racing Tour and Extreme Sailing Series fleets. The Racing Tour then moved on to the beautiful new venue of Lagos, Portugal, and showcased the fleet in Palma, Spain, at the 37th Copa del Rey MAPFRE for a week of perfect foiling conditions. The penultimate event of the season was in the picturesque Sardinian resort of Villasimius, Italy, before the show-stopping grand finale in Toulon, France at the GC32 TPM Med Cup. If you missed any of the GC32 Racing Tour action in 2018 here is your complete wrap up of the season.
This custom catamaran was designed by John Shuttleworth, a leading high performance catamaran designer from England. He was contracted to design a fast, smooth, safe cat that would support the newest idea of self sailing rigging, the AeroRig®. The result is the Shuttleworth 52. She is constructed of Airex foam core, carbon fibers, Kevlar, E-glass, and Pro-set epoxy resin. Her length overall is 52'2" with a beam overall of 33'6". She has a draft of 2'10" with kickup rudders. One dagger board in the port hull raised and lowered from the cockpit. She is powered by twin 59 horsepower Volvo diesel engines with Sail Drives equiped with 3 blade full feathering and adjustabe pitch Stainless Steel props. Lots of room and easy access in the engine room, KE-4 electric engine controls and Jastram hydraulic steering. Her displacement is 16,500 and has a useful load of 10,000 lbs. Flush deck hatches, bow netting, and Ocean non-skid deck. The radar arch will handle radar and other things needed as the radar can not work very well on a rotating mast.

Salty Thanksgiving! Celebrating on our boat, a deconstructed turkey and other festive challenges #28
Happy Salty Thanksgiving! This year, we have so many things to be thankful for: the possibility that we have to live great adventures on our sailboat, the fact that Ryan and I are sailing the world together, as well as the support that we get from our friends, family and this community doing so. As we celebrate Thanksgiving in Almerimar, Spain, we face a few challenges… First off, where to find a Turkey?! We end up buying our Turkey in parts (very Ikea-ish for the two adoptive Swedes that we are), which ends up fitting well in our tiny galley oven. This episode is starring Ryan’s mom, who I wake up on Thanksgiving day at 5AM every year, to ask her to send me a copy of her dinner rolls recipe. We tried to find and invite other Americans at the marina to celebrate with us, but our call on Almerimar’s VHF net leaves us “alone”. Thankfully, we had met some friends already, Mia and Scott from SV Tengah, and were joined by our South African buddy Marky. We had great fun together, and this Thanksgiving ended up being quite special, for all the good reasons! Oh, and if you are interested in the dinner rolls recipe... I have posted the photos that Ryan's mom sent me on our blog: www.ryanandsophie.com ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** GEAR ** ⛵️Our boat: Polar Seal, 2007 Beneteau Oceanis 40, owners version (2 cabins layout). Now Im at sea crossing the Pacific filming a new 'Bigger adventure due for release early 2019. Make sure you have your notifications for this channel turned on so you don't miss the start! The Old Seadog will return! #sailing #stormatsea #sailingaroundtheworld Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adventuresof... Patreon https://www.patreon.com/adventuresofa... Instagram https://www.instagram.com/adventureso... Twitter https://twitter.com/barryperrins Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over 3 days. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Offshore sailing is a magical time and offers an opportunity to unwind, reflect and enjoy the incredible experience of bobbing on a relatively very tiny piece of fiberglass on the huge magnificent ocean. We are rarely disappointed by mother nature! If its not the sea surprising us, a glimpse up at the night sky usually does the trick. But often we hear from viewers that they love the idea of sailing but are not at all enamoured in passage making. Well we thought we would spell off some of the mystery. Most of the time passage making in these latitudes is awesome downwind sailing! In this episode we introduce you to some of the basics that go into making an offshore sailing. This particular passage we were rewarded by a crazy rare sighting from the monsters of the sea! But really we wanted to give you an introduction into some of the small details that go into everyday life when you are bobbing along on the ocean. In this first episode of many we cover some of the very basics. After our last incident where we lost our anchor we finally leave the Blue Hole and head back to Half Moon Caye for a spectacular drift snorkel over the undersea cliff of the atoll. On our way to the next piece of paradise we had a surprise visitor, a beautiful little bird. But she wans't alone, she was mourning her partner that died on deck. Very responsive, stable, and comfortable in light winds, the Tiwal 3 is dynamic in more challenging conditions. Whether you’re sailing solo or double-handed, it is perfect for your adventures at sea or on a lake! Boat of the Year Award | Best Innovation | by Sailing World U.S.A. "The thing was a blast. I couldn't believe how well it sailed. You could have some serious fun with this, especially in big breeze." -------------------------- ** The Tiwal story ** * The Birth of Tiwal * As a girl, the first time our founder Marion Excoffon was told, “No!” by her father when she asked to use the family boat, her life as an inventor began. It was then she started dreaming of building her own craft, an ambitious feat that would come true years later. On the road to creating an innovative high-speed vessel for everyone from kids and first timers to expert sailors who want to test limits, there were a number of prototypes, failures, challenges and headaches. But, if there’s one thing Marion’s known for, it’s her sailor’s grit! * Combining Fun & Technology * The award winning Tiwal concept is easy assembly and storage - maximum fun and performance for watersports and activities. A Tiwal isn’t your average dinghy! Our design is the result of tons of coordination, talent, and technological savvy. * A Growing Global Community * For our community of Tiwal skippers (more than 2,500 worldwide!) all this innovative design means their focus is fixed on the pleasures of watersports and having tons of fun on a responsive sailing craft. With excellent upwind and downwind abilities combined with high-speeds, Tiwals are a part of both fun and professional performance. The Tiwal 3 received the Boat of the Year (Best innovation) Award 2014 from Sailing World in the USA and the Red Dot Award, with recognitions, accolades, and smiling faces continuing to join together on the waves worldwide.
