Building a cruising sailboat It's finally time to start fitting the engine in the boat, and the first job involved in this is to securely fit the engine bed. I'm going for a belt and braces and more braces approach to this, so first I make up a plug that will be fixed to the inside bottom of the boat, over which the engine bed will locate. The next step is the very scary task of cutting a hole in the correct location in the bottom of the boat. This is achieved with the use of a self-made template. And that is as far as we get in this video. Next week the engine bed fitting will continue. Stay tuned! Faye orders the world's biggest food shop then spends hours and hours trying to stow it all! We leave Tenerife and sail Chelsea to La Palma, our last stop in the Canaries before heading to Madeira. We meet Olmo in Tazacorte Marina, La Palma, and he kindly takes us on an incredible hike through the volcano crater (Caldera) to find the only fresh water river in the Canaries. Having some very rudimentary knowledge and no practical experience with sailing, 3 years ago we decided we wanted to pack up our stuff and sail around the world. We worked our a$$es off to save up enough money, learn some basic things about boats and wind and stuff and get all the required licenses (after all Alex is German and I (Mandy) am Dutch and our governments love licenses, so as the good civilians that we are, we got them all!). Now the time has come to leave the city of Berlin, which has been our comfortable home for the past 11 (Alex) and 5 (Mandy) years, behind. We wave our friends and family, colleagues and the city goodbye, drag our many, heavy bags to the plane and arrive on our boat Blue in Lefkas, Greece. Today we went from living in Berlin to living on a sailboat in Greece! Today we start our sailing adventure in the Med! In Chapter 2, we will follow our journey in the Uttan landfill in Mumbai. Uttan is the second biggest dump of the city of Mumbai, Deonar being the first. Michel Biel, one of the emerging actors of the moment in France and protagonist of a well-known French television series, that has been directed by masters such as Christopher Nilan ,will discover the issue of plastic pollution in our oceans and will do so, by confronting a reality as brutal as that of the Uttan landfill. Every year, India produces 60 million tons of waste, of which 2.7 million are generated only in Mumbai. The facilities that are there to absorb the tons generated in the city every day​ are the Deonar and Uttan landfills which also receive tons of plastic waste from other countries. The amount of waste arriving in the Mumbai landfills exceeds twice the capacity of these. As a result of the overload, the mountains of garbage tower over 30 meters high. Local communities and environmentalists have long complained about the lax enforcement of hazardous waste regulations, and Uttan is just one example of a phenomenon happening in many sites around the world. When the heavy seasonal rains arrive, tons of plastic from the landfills wash up into the ocean, unsupervised by the management, and this in turns refreshes the capacity of the dump to receive more waste. That is why many sanctioned garbage dumps in the world are intentionally set up on the coast or close to rivers. There are several dumps that are well managed as well, but it is time to push for better waste management, as well as for more waste reduction and recycling strategies. We spend our last couple of days at the Palm Cay Marina in Nassau tackling a few boat chores and stocking up on provisions before heading to the beautiful Exuma Cays. The Exumas are often described as one of the most stunning, special places in The Bahamas. All of the cruisers we’ve met so far absolutely love the area, so we’ve been anxious to experience it for ourselves for the first time. From the east side of New Providence Island (Nassau), we travel 29 nautical miles in the incredibly clear blue, and at some points, shallow water to reach one of the first stops in the northern Exumas. We dropped anchor in Allan’s Cay, a very small island with nothing but rock and reef (there’s prehistoric iguanas on SW Allan’s, but we didn’t make it over there). While snorkeling the area, we spot 2 lionfish, which are incredibly invasive and dangerous to reefs. They have invaded The Bahamas and much of the Caribbean, have no predators, and each fish releases over 2 million eggs per year. (You can read more about lionfish here: https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/lionfish-facts.html) Keegan has been eager and excited to start spearfishing, we just haven’t seen many fish up until this point. So with his Hawaiian Sling, dives down for his first catch! We’ve known about lionfish and their threat to the reefs for years, we’ve just never had the opportunity to remove any - so this was an exciting moment. After a few days in Allan’s Cay, we head a bit south to our next destination - Norman’s Cay, another favored stop for cruisers. Colombia was amazeballs!! Creativity just oozes from this place and it's people - there's street art, music and performance pieces on every street corner plus plenty of homemade crafts and great food. We were also lucky enough to take a trip up into the Sierra Nevada mountains to the town of Minca and walk through the rainforest, visiting coffee plantations, learning from the locals about the very real and recent history of violence here and enjoying swimming in the rivers. We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! Sea Horse is back in the water so we all take her out for the first sail of the year. Whilst we do that we have a bit of a natter about tides! We get a lot of tide on the east coast of England, yes there are places that have more but with todays tidal range being 6m, we have plenty to keep us occupied. Of course with that much water flowing in and out of the Medway each day you dont get very far if you dont take it into account when going for a sail so here are some of the things we think about when picking a route down river. A trip to Poulsbo made us feel like home and we got to experience going through the Ballard locks on lake Union. Then it was time to fly to our home away from Ran, Sweden, and meet our families and friends after 1,5 years! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. This 6 day offshore passage from New Caledonia to Australia completed our 12000 mile journey across the south pacific, the worlds largest ocean. Despite ripping our mainsail and having to come up with an alternative sail plan, we finally reach Australia, the end of the south pacific journey for us. Joined along the way by some friendly wildlife, it was a mixed passage in terms of emotion and weather.
