In this episode of Sailing Chelsea, we finally get lifted back into the water, which goes smoothly - thank goodness! We are awaiting the repair of our sail and we are still no closer to having the electrical refit completed, which is becoming frustrating! Instead of waiting around for very little to actually happen, we decide we will go home and work to get a bit of money behind us. In this episode of Sailing Chelsea, we continue with our work on Chelsea whilst she is out of the water. We are in the shipyard and have finally cleaned all of Chelsea's hull - which was pretty badly fouled with barnacles and sea-worm. We get a coat of primer on her and change the oil in the sail drive. It's a long wait for the anti-foul but it eventually turns up and we are excited to get Chelsea's bum finished! Ryan also works had to polish Chelsea and get her beautiful and shiny and after 2 weeks of nonstop work, Chelsea is finished! Unfortunately, the maintenance that we complete is only a small part of the problems we currently face. With all our electronics needing replacing, we are still waiting for this work to be done, which is turning out to be a much longer wait than the 5 days originally quoted! In this episode of Sailing Chelsea, we are in the shipyard and we embark on the massive task of cleaning Chelsea's hull - which is pretty horrendous! We scrap and spray and scrap some more and it does start to look a lot better. We also get on with lots of other jobs on Chelsea's bottom like changing anodes. Faye explains the principle of having anodes on a boat, for more info get in touch and we will explain in better more precise detail! Ryan gives you a good tip for cleaning the anchor chain, we file and fill the crack and dent in the keel and we begin to service the sail drive. In this episode of our Sailing Chelsea Blog, we show you the stunning ruins of the ancient city of Nora, along the East coast of Sardinia and explain a little about its fascinating history. Then we set sail, heading to Cagliari, Sardinia's capital city. We stay there for 2 days doing nothing (!) then decide to head further north to Olbia, as this city is slightly easier to access from an anchorage. It is on this journey that everything goes wrong! We get hit by a tornado (more aptly known as a water spout) which causes some very scary times at sea. We can not sail as the wind is too strong for us, reaching 60 knots at times, but unfortunately our main sail raises itself up in the wind! This meant it was near on impossible to control the boat and keep it moving in the same direction as the waves. As we turned beam on to the waves and Chelsea leaned right over, we prepared for a capsize! This episode shows and tells you what happened! In this episode of our sailing vlog, it's full on with some strong winds that catch a lot of people out and cause several boats to drag and crash. This is a notorious wind system known as the Mistrel that comes off of the south of France and regularly blows 40+ knots. The Mistrel is definitely something to watch out for! After Ryan helps a fellow sailor who's anchor drags, we sit out the wind for a couple of sleepless days and nights until the Mistrel clears and we can finally leave to sail over to Sardinia. Fourth time lucky!! We have a pretty non-eventful sail, have some nice winds, make full use of all three of our sails and only have to run the motor for around 30 minutes - we HATE having the motor on. It's noisy, burns diesel and ruins the tranquility that is sailing. We get to our destination, Sardina, and the first thing we see if a flock of flamingos flying over the boat - wow! Faye gets extremely excited about this, as well as finally making it across, and we anchor in a stunning little bay with crystal clear waters. In this episode its all about ancient caves - we head around the north west coast of Menorca to Cala Morell where we kayak into some incredible caves with unusual looking stones in the rock. It turns out the caves used to be an ancient sea bed going back millions of years! Then we head into the small town and 5 minutes up the road we enter the Necròpolis de Son Morell. These date back to between 3000 and 4000 BC and were grave sites for the ancient people of Menorca. We are amazed and very pleased that there is no tourist office or payment required and you can freely explore these ruins alone and at your own pace. They are really quite thought provoking and it's amazing that such carving was done and can still be observed today! After this we decide we are going to head to Sardinia but some dodgy wind and extremely slow speed make us reconsider! In this jam packed episode, we sail from Formentera to Ibiza. Mick is still with us but unfortunately we the wind isn't in our favour for the sail and we have to motor most of it. We are proud of ourselves on leaving the mooring ball under sail though - something we haven't done before! We have problems with our generator not working which, with our intermittent battery problems, isn't ideal for our power situation! Ryan and Mick have a go at fixing it. Then, in true Sailing Chelsea style, our anchor gets stuck on a mysterious object which leads to a call to the emergency services (!) it's all very dramatic but makes interesting viewing to fellow sailors and says a lot about the Spanish concern for the environment! We have some scary times with our engine not turning on or off but Ryan manages to sort it, thank fully!! And Faye makes some progress with her back flip - not to be missed!!
